Questions About the Rescue in Colombia
    2008-07-03 16:57:09
The dramatic rescue of the FARC hostages raises a host of important questions, here are a few, with short answers following and lengthy answers below: Was the rescue the cover for an arrangement with the FARC? Probably not. What effect will this have on future hostage releases? It will probably lead to more units dissolving and possibly releasing their hostages. Colombian security used a ruse claiming to be an NGO, could such ploys undermine the legitimate role of NGOs? Possibly, it’s complicated....(read more)

The Importance of the Colombian Rescue Mission
    2008-07-03 10:30:25
As my colleagues Jonathan Winer and Aaron Mannes have written on the Counterterrorism Blog, the spectacular operation by the Colombian military to rescue 15 high-profile hostages was a tremendous blow to the FARC in Colombia. In the interest of full disclosure, Ingrid Bentancourt is a friend of mine, and I have written about her in the past because of her tremendous courage in acting as a beacon of light in a narco-corrupted congress, and in defiance of her own political party. On a personal level,...(read more)

FARC is FARC'd: Assessing the Hostage Rescue
    2008-07-02 18:20:36
The first reports about the Colombian military’s rescue of the 15 hostages held by FARC (in Spanish) indicate an impressive intelligence operation. The hostages were held in three separate locations. Colombian intelligence had infiltrated one of the FARC fronts holding the hostages as well as the FARC Secretariat. They told the front commander “Cesar” that the hostages were being transferred on the orders of FARC chief Alfonso Cano. After gathering the hostages in one location the...(read more)

During the firemen's strike of 1978, the British Army had taken over emergency fire fighting and on January 14th they were called out by an elderly lady in South London to retrieve her cat which had become trapped up a tree. They arrived with impressive haste and soon discharged their duty. So grateful was the lady that she invited them all in for tea. Driving off later, with fond farewells completed, they ran over the cat and killed it!..

Debt Consolidation Loans To The Rescue!
    2008-05-20 05:12:42
A lot of people are depending more and more on debt consolidation loans to soften their credit and financial troubles. There are many good and competent arrears consolidation and relief firms which employ skilled professionals to facilitate the liability consolidation.Debit consolidation loans make it easier to the consumers by bringing together the burden of multiple bills. Through the process a single loan is taken for a huge amount in order to pay off the multiple smaller loans. That is in essence the various smaller loans are consolidated into one bigger loan. The customer will be able to enjoy lower interest rate and also has the option of coming up with smaller monthly instalments. The consumer will also find it advantageous as he can have a better track of his financial situation.Mainly two types of loans are depended on to consolidate the debts. These include the home equity lending and the personal debt consolidation. If the consumer is a home owner he can borrow against it us

    Razamataz To The Rescue?!?
    2008-05-10 17:58:00
Bryan Hoch/MLB.com:Darrell Rasner pitched six-plus effective innings and Derek Jeter hit his first home run of the season as the Yankees defeated the Tigers, 5-2, on Saturday at Comerica Park. Making his second start since being called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Rasner turned in another sharp effort and helped continue to settle the Yankees' starting pitching woes. He was hit for a first-inning run when rookie Matthew Joyce popped his first big league home run, a solo shot to right, but he settled in to throw five scoreless innings in protecting the lead. Rasner was charged with two runs when reliever Kyle Farnsworth allowed an inherited runner to score in the seventh. Rasner scattered four hits while walking one and striking out one in the effort.

An Aging Face Rhytidectomy To The Rescue : The Plastic Surgery Institute Of California
    2008-04-24 01:23:00
With constant breakthroughs in medical research, the average life span of the average American has increased from forty-nine in 1900 to seventy-seven in 1998. With more and more people making use of alternative medicine therapies like yoga, herbalism, diet-based therapy, etc. a person need not be 50 to be termed as old.The ‘new’ old is 30 in this health conscious time and age. In this frenzied race against time, a younger body has to have a younger face to go with it. Where is the fun in feeling younger by years if you aren’t looking younger?Beauty creams can only get you this far.A more long term benefit is what is assured by most doctors after a cosmetic surgery. Rhytidectomy, or ‘face lifts’ as they are popularly known, rhinoplasty, chemical peels, injectables like Botox®, etc. are some of the procedures that are available not only to the rich socialite but also to the working mom and to the septuagenarian who wants to remarry.Rhytidectomy is the most popular procedure pa

Reiki to the Rescue: Reviving Depleted Batteries
    2008-04-03 19:31:57
REIKI STORY...When I was taking my Level I Reiki class, I can remember my teacher mentioning as an aside, "Oh, yes and by the way, you can Reiki batteries also." I also remember thinking, "Ok, I was with you-- until now. Don't try to sell me some hocus pocus magic tricks."All along, what I was being taught seemed reasonable, even though the name Reiki was kind of weird sounding, the ideas made sense on some level to me. And besides, I was only there taking this class so I could continue to do Polarity work without being energetically drained myself. Wrong! Just when I think I have it all figured out, the universe throws me a curve ball. My teacher continued very matter-of-factly explaining, if you have a battery that has died but has not been sitting in a drawer dead for some time, you can Reiki it and it will revive itself, enough that you will not need to immediately replace the battery. "Yep! Sure! No problem! Watch out Energizer Bunny, I'm looking to take over your job" I'm think

Our friend Justin through a great surprise brunch birthday party for his girlfriend Shayna. There was a great arrangement of bagels and spreads from Murray's Bagels, lox and belly salmon, a cheese platter(loved the Ubriaco), fruit, and crackers. The other table was filled with chips and dips and I made a big basket of assorted mini muffins, maple walnut, chocolate, and banana. (Yes, I just wanted to show off my basket of muffins)Everything was perfect but Something Sweet Something Sweet called Justin around 11am to tell him they couldn't deliver the cake he had ordered to be delivered at 12. That is so unreliable that it doesn't even matter their cakes are good or not. We didn't think we could get another cake on such short notice but Amish Market Amish Market came to the rescue and delivered two beautiful cakes in about 15-10 minutes. Now, that is service!

    Chargers: Volek to the rescue?
    2008-01-16 16:51:00
If Philip Rivers can’t play at some point Sunday, the Chargers will turn to a man who holds the NFL record since 1970 for most passing yards (2,789) in his first 10 career starts.Billy Volek? He once completed 39 passes, second most in Tennessee Titans’ history, during a game against the Chargers on Oct. 3, 2004.Naturally, the Chargers hope Rivers (strained right medial collateral ligament) can play the entire game Sunday at New England as they attempt to reach the Super Bowl for the first time in 13 years. But should Volek need to be the answer, well, at least he’s been the answer at times before.Just last Sunday, Volek scored the winning TD on a 1-yard sneak to cap an eight-play, 78-yard drive during an improbable 28-24 win at Indianapolis. Was this really the same Volek who couldn’t hit an open receiver five yards away during his brief stints in the regular season?Perhaps the difference was playing in a situation where the Chargers needed him to produce to win, rather than not make mistakes while they were ahead on the scoreboard.“I haven't had a chance to go out there to play to win,” Volek said after the Indianapolis game. “When I've played it's been, 'OK, don't lose the game.' To go out there and be with those guys, it's a confidence booster and it reminds me how fun this game is.” During a two-game stint of the 2004 season, Volek passed for 426 yards against Kansas City and 492 yards vs. Oakland, becoming the fourth QB in NFL history to record back-to-back 400-yard passing games and only the second man to record 900 or more passing yards in back-to-back contests.Volek hasn’t played much since that 2004 season, when he replaced Steve McNair (bruised sternum) at QB for the Titans.Even so, the eight-year veteran out of Fresno State proved he had something left in the gas tank when the Chargers needed him most against the (then) defending Super Bowl champions from Indianapolis.Come Sunday, the Chargers may need another miracle from their sec

    Mommy To the Rescue!!!
    2008-01-07 22:02:00
My mother found the story and emailed it to me. Once again she comes to save the day. Yay mommy! So now, without further hesitation, the rant.Pope Benedict XVI has been a weird pope in my humble and non-Catholic opinion. I am stressing the non-Catholic place that this opinion originates from because it really is none of my concern what this Pope or any Pope for that matter says, but considering how outreaching his predecessor was I must admit to finding his behavior puzzling and I did admire Pope John Paul quite a bit.We all remember that little problem the Church had a few years ago with frisky priests and little boys in robes, right? Well. the Pope, to his credit, has finally acknowledged the depth of this problem and has, in his infallible wisdom, come up with the best way to solve the problem-prayer: twenty-four hours of continuous prayer. If your church cannot handle the task alone, the burden can be shared among various churches within a parish. He is asking "that every parish or institution should designate a person or group each day to conduct continuous prayers for the Church to rid itself of the scandal of sexual abuse by clergy." The part that made me laugh uncontrollably? Here:However, Cardinal Bernard Law, who was Archbishop of Boston when the scandal broke, was transferred to a post in Rome and remains a respected figure – despite accusations that he did not take strong enough action in dealing with abuse in his diocese. Notice they do not wish to rid themselves of the clergy that is doing the abuse, just the scandal. Some things are just best left unspoken between a boy and his priest I assume. If Pope Benedict were really serious about clearing the Church of the Predator Priests then perhaps removing Cardinal Bernard Law, the man who allowed so much abuse to go on and on and on, from office instead of insulating him in Rome, would show the world he means to end the abuse and not just the scandal. Perhaps that he even means to protect the

Captured by enemy forces and held in a Laotian torture camp near the Ho Chi Minh Trail, Dengler defied death by organizing one of the most daring escapes in the Vietnam conflict. My Two Cents:During the early stages of the Vietnam War, U.S. Navy pilot Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale) was sent on a top-secret mission over Laos, but was shot down and taken hostage, tortured and then transported to a POW camp with other American pilots. Some of these prisoners had been held there for over two years. Dieter has no plans to stay that long and intends to escape, but Duane Martin (Steve Z

The NEFA Foundation has obtained and translated a copy of a new communique from the Al-Fajr Media Center--Al-Qaida's official online logistical network--titled, "We'll Do It Again: Annapolis Shall Not Rescue Their Metropolis, Written by a Soldier in the Army Aiming to Destroy Their Metropolis." The statement condemned the upcoming Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in Annapolis, Maryland, as a bid to "declare war against the Muslims and to cleanse the desire for jihad from each and every believer."...(read more)

    Deflation to the Rescue
    2007-11-24 11:21:00
by Clif DrokeTime is the least common denominator of all things, including in the stock market. We'd all be lost if we couldn't look at the clock throughout the day since time is our frame of reference for the day's activities. So are the days of the calendar and so are the dominant equity market cycles. With that in mind, let's step back for a minute and consider where we are in the grand scheme of the 60-year cycle. The 60-year cycle is one of the most profound market cycles of our lifetime since it usually bottoms at least once during the average lifespan. The 60-year cycle also closely correlates with the 50-70 year Kondratieff economic long wave (which as the name implies is a wave, not a cycle). The K-wave averages 60 years and is expected to bottom at about the same time as the current 60-year cycle, in or around 2014.The 60-year cycle is the dominant half-cycle component of the Kress 120-year Master Cycle series, which governs the major bias of the financial markets over a 1

Rescue A Life By Taking A Stray Dog In
    2007-11-18 21:21:00
Giving home to a homeless is among the most noble things, a man is capable of doing. A stray dog who scavenges to eat and lives at the crumbs thrown by others is not a pretty sight for most of us, and that's the reason why most of us have entertained the thought of bringing a stray dog home at some point of time in our lives. However, most of the time we did not act upon the thought because we thought it would be too difficult to train a grown up stray dog for these two reasons-- his being grown up and his being a stray dog. We were wrong on both counts. Old dogs are not less capable of learning than puppies and can learn even faster having seen a lot of life already.Stray dogs are hard working as they have spent a large part of their lives struggling for food and life. They are grateful for the security and nourishment you provide and are ready to show that it was all worth it.There are, however, a few things that you must do before taking a stray dog as a pet. Take the dog to the vet and have him examine it, for contagious diseases are a big risk in the strays though there is nothing much to worry about, as they can be easily treated.Once you are through with the medical examination of the pet, it is time to train him a little because having spent most of his life scavenging, he would still try to find food in the dustbin. Gently tell him “No” if that doesn't work, say a firm “No!”That should work. After telling him not to look for food in the dustbin take him to his meal bowl, put some food in it and let him eat so that he gets the message as to where he would find food in the house.Make them associate right. For instance, if he is being punished, he should be able to associate it with the fault. You come back home and find your pillow chewed upon, the dog gets punished. He'll chew it again and would hide when you come back. He fears punishment but has not been able to associate it with the mistake. He associates it with your coming back home and not wi

Okay, Thanksgiving is coming. And I am cooking it. But I hate stuffing. I think it is the spices that go in the stuffing that I don't like the most. None of my kids nor my husband like stuffing either so I never make it. So rescue me this year. Do any of you have a stuffing recipe that is a different recipe? I have heard of cornbread, raisins, and other odd ingredients being added. I am

Red Sox Nation to the Rescue
    2007-09-14 17:10:00
Here's a really nice clip that shows just how great Red Sox fans are. Back on June 30th, the Red Sox had "Disability Awareness Day" at Fenway Park, to highlight people with all kinds of disabilities. The national anthem was sung by a young boy named Peter, who is affected by autism. Peter gets a little nervous as he was singing before over 36,000 fans. But the Sox fans help out the young man, and he gets through it just fine. Thanks to my sister Theresa, who sent me this nice YouTube video, that runs just under two minutes.

    Buchholz to the Rescue
    2007-09-07 17:48:00
It was a back-and-forth game at Camden Yards last night, but the Red Sox ultimately prevailed over Baltimore, 7-6, when Jason Varitek singled in Coco Crisp in the top of the ninth. But the biggest story last night was again the pitching of Clay Buchholz against the Orioles. He came out of the bullpen and pitched three solid innings. At first, he looked shaky, as he walked two and gave up a single to begin the sixth inning. But he got a 5-2-3 double play, and Kevin Cash made a great throw to nail Miguel Tejada at first. Buch then struck out Kevin Millar to end the Baltimore threat. He showed me some great poise under the pressure of a bases loaded mess, and it seems to be one of his great strengths.Buchholz then breezed through the last two innings, and the Red Sox score in the ninth gave him his third win. Jonathan Papelbon got a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his 34th save.It was Clamapalooza Night at Professor Thom's last night, and I watched the game and doled out some chowder to the patrons.

    Lowell to the Rescue
    2007-08-15 18:02:00
Before last night, the Red Sox had won just one game they had been trailing after 8 innings, and that was the "Mother's Day Miracle" game when they came back from a 5-0 deficit in the bottom of the ninth to win, 6-5 over Baltimore. So they were overdue for a dramatic win.The Sox were down, 1-0, going into the ninth. With one out, Mike Lowell blasted a 2-0 pitch from Al Reyes (Remember him? He's the guy who hit Nomar Garciaparra in the wrist with a pitch in late 1999, and it cost him most of the 2001 season) way over the Green Monster seats to tie the game at 1. Jason Varitek later doubled, and scored the game winner when Coco Crisp singled him in (pictured). It was a huge win for the Sox, as the Yankees were slaughtered in the Bronx by the Orioles, 12-0, so the Sox are now 5 games up once again.I missed most of the game, as I was having dinner with a dear friend in Brooklyn. So my cell phone was my source for information. (I can't tell you how happy I was to see a "2" in the Red So

    Fletch's Film Review: Rescue Dawn
    2007-08-15 17:27:00
Dieter Dangler is one strange dude. Growing up in Germany in the 40s, he and his town were subjected to bombing from the Allied forces. Dieter looked through a hole in his roof one day and caught a glimpse of a bomber pilot flying by. Despite this (or, as Rescue Dawn, because of it), Dieter comes to America in his teens with the lone goal of becoming a pilot. As the title of director Werner Herzog's earlier documentary of Dangler states, Little Dieter Needs to Fly.However, not long after Dieter (Christian Bale) gets to fly, he's shot down. Near Vietnam. All alone, he does his best to gets rescued, but in no time flat, he's captured and transferred to a POW camp in nearby Laos. Yet, despite being in a helpless situation, tortured all along, Dieter keeps his spirits high, almost smiling the whole way. He's taking it all in, for better or worse. At the POW camp, he meets a group of prisoners, some of which have been there upwards of two years or more. While not tortured much at the camp, t

It appears Ye Ole Lemming Abode is becoming an information hub for this “d5d1.com mystery.” I am flattered and wish I had more information to give out about this, but it is as baffling to me as anyone else. All I can do is tell how I came to conclude it was that site causing the problem.I blog from work quite often. I know I shouldn't, but I do. Today I found most of the sites I visited were not opening so I just assumed I got busted and they blocked those sites. They blocked MySpace a long time ago so it is not without precedent. Instead I figured I would just bop home during my lunch hour and see what was what out in bloggerspace. Yes, I am that addicted to blogging, but that is not the point of this post. At home I found my favorite sites would still not open so obviously it was not the IT guy who blocked me, but something else. While waiting and waiting and waiting for something, anything to open I noticed a weird message in my window. At work I use Internet Explore

Rescue is finally at hand for our Lost castaways! Or is it?
    2007-06-04 03:01:06
The season 3 finale of Lost depicted the events that took place as our favorite castaways carried out Jack’s plan to simultaneously turn off Danielle Rousseau’s transmission, blow-up the others who were infiltrating their camp, and stop the jamming equipment in the underwater hatch. By the end, the passengers of flight 815 were successful. It seemed that rescue may have finally been at hand, or was it? As the plot unfolded, clues were revealed letting everyone know that once again everything was not what it seemed to be. One part of the plan required Charlie to swim down to an underwater hatch; and once down there turn off the jamming equipment blocking there signal. As soon as this was accomplished, there was a message sent through from none other than Desmond’s Penny. Excited to see her, Charlie described the situation, including that they are trying to get a signal to the boat that she sent to rescue them. The confused Penny then stated that she had never sent a boat of any

    Checking Line To The Rescue
    2007-05-31 18:41:00
One of the most well-known assumptions in playoff hockey is that defense wins games, not offense. The Anaheim Ducks are certainly proving that in this year's Stanley Cup Finals against Ottawa. Not only has their checking line scored the game-winner in the first two games of the series, but they have also totally neutralized the Senators' biggest scoring threats.Arguably the best offensive line in all of the NHL, the Senators' Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley and captain Daniel Alfredsson, have been completely shut down so far in this series. Even worse, instead of scoring goals, they're now turning over the puck under pressure, creating the few scoring chances that the Ducks need to eek out close wins.In Game 2, it was Heatley's mistake that led to Samuel Pahlsson's game-winner, a quick wrister past turned-around defensman Joe Corvo and into the net behind goalie Ray Emery. Emery had a solid night, making 30 saves. With no goal support from the boys in front of him, though, the lo

Tilly And The Wall + The Little Ones @ The Rescue Rooms, Notts
    2007-03-05 20:41:00
Mother Nature must have known that two of America's most sunny bands had arrived in Nottingham last Monday as for the first time in months that bright yellow star was visible in the Midlands sky and everyone seemed that little bit more upbeat. This atmosphere must have been epicentred on The Rescue Rooms as warmth and smiles seemed illuminate even its gloomiest corners. After having to watch a piss poor set by The Displacements (the lead singer didn't even take off his coat), who thought they were The View/The Libertines/any good, I managed to push my way to near the front to catch The Little Ones. The Californian 5-piece arrived on stage, all smiles and joy, which pretty much describes their sound, its all cute and cheery, but its nothing inspriarional. There's enough hand-clapping and little catchy singalong bits to keep me entertained for a half hour set but beyond that i could see myself getting bored quite quickly. One of their songs started like She Wants To Move by NERD but it

    Emotional Rescue
    2006-08-25 18:27:00
Did you know that 90% of all Forex traders lose money? Now I bet you are questioning my zeal for trading the spot Forex market! If you are just starting out trading this market this not a very good omen. How do you ensure that you become the 10% that succeed, especially if given the fact that so many traders are willing to part with their hard earned cash? There are many reasons for these abysmal stats: lack of discipline, lack of money management skills, and the. I think the reason for the poor success rate is that 90% of the traders can’t manage their emotions while trading. This is the demon I fight daily. Money management and discipline are the symptoms, but emotions are the root cause! From day one of trading the currency markets I have heard every guru shouting at the top of their lungs to cut you r loses and let your profits run. Or that anyone can put on a trade, but it is the professional trader that knows when to exit a trade. It seems like a simple concept to let your prof
