    Wimbledon 2008: Local residents parking
    2008-06-24 00:36:17
So residents living near the All England Club have been caught trying to sell parking permits to Wimbledon fans. Is that a surprise? Wandsworth Council issued homes near the tennis venue with special passes to allow friends and relatives to park in restricted areas during the tournament. The council was then forced to issue new permits after it emerged some residents tried to sell the passes online and even forge the passes in some cases. Ebay comes in handy for most things, but some people just can't help themselves. Just ask the Eavis family when Glastonbury comes round. They offer locals day passes as noise and disruption compensation, but then you get the odd few who put them up on the internet without realising the tickets have been logged.

    Tips for Nutley residents
    2008-06-11 19:10:00
I just got off the phone with Lt. Steven Rogers, of the Nutley Police Department. In addition to his wanting to remind residents of schools being closed tomorrow and Friday, he also asked me to remind everyone to keep a safe distance from hanging branches or loose trees. He also wants everyone to be sure to stay clear of down wires, as they could be live (and therefore extremely dangerous). As more information develops during this crisis, we'll be sure to let you know. And one final thing: We should really give a ton of thanks to the police, fire and DPW in Nutley for their tireless work of the last 24 hours or so. Some have been working around the clock — and they've done a fantastic job given the circumstances.

    2008-05-29 08:17:00

"She's doing very well," said Calgary police Insp. Frank Reuser, who was badly shaken by what he'd seen at the house. "She's doing a lot better than me." An officer

The incidents have prompted police in both cities to increase patrols in neighborhoods with heavy Orthodox populations.Southfield Police Chief Joseph Thomas said there's no indication that the assaults last week were hate crimes, but added that the violent behavior has the department concerned.

Canada to Annex North Dakota, Residents "Quite Pleased"
    2008-02-07 09:00:00
CWT - Bismark, ND. Cats With Thumbs midwest affilate reports year long secret negotiations between the U.S. & Canada are in the " final stages, " and the U.S. State of North Dakota is expected to become the 11th Canadian Province before the end of 2008. If the annexation proceeds as planned, it will be the first peaceful reduction of United States continental territory and the first and only U.S. State to be sold to another country. The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade refused official comment when asked for verification by CWT reporters on location in Ottawa. A Canadian Foreign Affairs official told Cats With Thumbs off the record: " We couldn't be happier - as you are no doubt aware, Canada is seldom at the forefront of global media interest and the country as a whole has been in a rather grumpy malaise for quite some time. Attention Chicago Residents: Buy Your Bottled Water Before Midnight (Though A Legal Challenge is Pending)
    2007-12-31 00:00:00
In a few hours, Chicago residents will be paying $10.5 million more for bottled water, due to the implementation of the 5-cent-per-bottle tax we blogged about here. We wrote: So why did the council enact a five-cent tax on bottled water? Is it defensible under any principle of sound tax policy? ... [The mayor] just wanted to raise revenue via an arbitrary tax source that has no justification to be used as a general revenue source. And if you can believe this, another reason that was actually cited in a previous article when this issue was first being debated was that the city was upset that people were buying bottled water and not purchasing the water via the city's monopoly on tap water. Maybe we spoke too soon: the tax will soon be challenged in court: [The plaintiffs will be the] American Beverage Association, the International Bottled Water Association, the Illinois Retail Merchants Association and the Illinois Food Retailers Association....Illinois Beverage Associatio

Heroin Rehab Program in Florida Attracts New Jersey Residents
    2007-11-17 15:15:25
A heroin rehab program in Florida seems to have attracted a number of heroin addicts in New York and New Jersey to access drug addiction treatment there. When the residents from New York and New Jersey were asked why they chose to come to a Florida rehab program instead of a New York rehab program they stated the rehab programs seemed more comprehensive down here. They had everything from heroin detox to their own halfway houses. When the Jacksonville, Florida drug rehab was interviewed it was true. This particular drug addiction treatment program had a heroin detox program, inpatient rehab, day treatment, outpatient rehab and its own recovery apartments. In addition, it had a four day family program and a seperate LGBT treatment center. It is no wonder people from all over the country travel to Jacksonville, Florida for treatment. If you are looking for a Heroin drug rehab or heroin detox program, you can call 1-800-99-DETOX and someone will be available day or night to assist you. B

Cook County Residents Granted Temporary Reprieve
    2007-10-05 07:00:00
In what could be a short term stay-of-execution, the Cook County Commissioners were deadlocked this week, eight votes for and eight against a two percentage point increase in the county-wide sales tax rate.Read previous blogs on the Cook County sales tax rate here and here. The county rate is currently 0.75 percent and the increase would bring the rate to 2.75 percent, more than triple the current rate.Chicagoans currently pay 9.0 percent on all their purchases when the state rate of 6.25 percent, the city rate of 2.0 percent and the 0.75 percent county rate are combined. 9.0 percent is already one of the highest rates in the country, and the proposed 2.0 percent increase would push the total rate in Chicago to 11.0 percent. The reprieve from the tax increase is only temporary because the commissioners will take up the tax hike again October 16 and the president of the commission, Todd Stroger, may vote to break the tie. From the Chicago Tribune:Stroger went so far as to say he'd cast a rare tie-breaking vote for the tax hike if need be to fill a projected $307 million budget shortfall for 2008.Stroger supported the tax hike, saying it would give the county enough revenue-$750 million annually-to avoid coming back to the taxpayers every year seeking more money. The $750 million increase is a massive tax hike that will largely be paid by lower-income individuals and will hurt businesses in the county that will see their customers travel to adjacent counties or use the internet to make their purchases.Cook County would be well advised to cut spending to close its budget gap, rather than go through with this enormous tax hike that will damage its economy by driving consumers, residents and businesses away.

Local Seattle Residents Hit by Rental Car Tax That Was Sold as a Tax on Non-Residents
    2007-09-07 07:00:00
There's one type of tax competition that every state and local lawmaker seems to relish: Who can enact taxes that collect the most from non-residents? After all, non-residents don't vote.Rental car taxes are among the favorites in this category, especially locations near the airport. Locals are told not to worry: people from out of state will pay the lion's share of these rental car taxes, and we'll get the government services. But once the tax is enacted, all that talk about the in-state advantage vanishes. Washington state and King County have just dealt a body blow to the eco-friendly Seattle FlexCar company whose members are local residents sharing cars by the hour. From the Seattle Times:For the average FlexCar member, [the rental car tax] will add about a dollar to an hourly $10 charge when FlexCar must begin to collect the 9.7 percent state and King County car-rental tax in October. FlexCar operates only in King County in Washington state. It already pays the state and local s

Castle Rock Colorado Residents Over 50 Taking Up Martial Arts
    2007-08-08 15:27:00
There's something strange going on in Castle Rock. Residents over fifty years old are beginning to practice a Japanese martial art called Aikido (pronounced 'eye-key-doh').Aikido isn't exclusively for men and women over fifty, but Aikido does seem to have an affinity for that age group. "I think it is because Aikido is a great form of exercise and a powerful form of self-defense, but still allows you to go to work on each morning without being covered in bruises and broken bones," says instructor Jeff Albright.Husband and wife instructors Jeff and Miho Albright don't seem surprised that their Aikido program is attracting people over fifty. "We have a tendency to attract more a intellectual, mature and introspective student, which may come with age, I suppose" he continued. "Our students really are here to become better people. It makes it a pleasure to teach them and we learn so much from them, as well." According to the instructors, there are no young, "hot-heads" with a chip on their shoulder in the program. "When those kind of people do show up, they tend not to stay," said Miho Albright. "Our program attracts people that are interested in having fun and growing personally, not people who are interested in learning how to hurt others."Jeff and Miho say that working adults tend to get forget that it is important for them to play, too. It's important for their health, their fitness, their mental state and even their social life. Aikido is a great opportunity to cover all of these needs. "Kids already have so many different activities to choose from. Our program is specifically targeted to adults," says Miho. "We allow teenagers 15-17 to participate, if they demonstrate the necessary maturity, but so far, we're an all adult program. Our focus is on providing adults with a fun, friendly, and physical environment to de-stress and grow as people."Castle Rock Aikido also tailors to adults by holding weekday classes in the evenings. Classes don't start until 8 p.m. This allows adults to come home from work, eat something, spend time with children, and then go practice Aikido for an hour or so. "This approach has been very successful for us. We seem to be fulfilling a real need in many Castle Rock households," Sensei Jeff continued. When most adults think of a martial arts school, they often think of children's classes, colorful belts, and pre-arranged fighting forms performed against imaginary opponents. Walk into many martial art schools and you'll hear loud shouts, screams, and grunts and if you look at the faces of many students you'll see a lot of brooding and grimacing. This Aikido program in Castle Rock is different. The predominant sound in class isn't shouting, but laughter. And, if you look around the room you see nothing but wide, bright smiles. Sensei Jeff Albright appeared to be quite serious when he said, "Aikido has a tendency to produce extreme happiness in people."While many martial arts have an age-related shelf life (like many professional sports do), Aikido is a life long practice. Aikido doesn't adversely discriminate with age. While much more dynamic than yoga, Aikido is similar to yoga in that you tend to get better, not worse, as you get older. "One of our teachers back in Japan is over 80 years old and still practices Aikido daily," says Sensei Miho. Furthermore, like yoga, Aikido contributes to health and longevity by helping to keep the body limber.Aikido strongly promotes and emphasizes body awareness. It is a way of physically reconnecting with yourself. By practicing Aikido, you learn to recognize just how much people have lost touch with their bodies, their senses, and for some people, their spirit. Aikido truly reawakens a spark of life long forgotten by many working adults. And, it does this without causing pain or injury.Student Gary S., 56, shared that "As I get older, I think about how I might maintain my balance, agility and coordination. As a health care professional I see many older people who have fallen and broken bones, in particular their hips. This happens, in part, because of a diminished sense of balance, a loss of agility. Aikido, through its repeated practice of centered movements, can help prevent such injuries by helping to maintain agility and a strong sense of balance."Paul P., 51, another health care professional at Parker Adventist Hospital, is attracted to Aikido because of it's non-competitive nature and relaxed atmosphere while still providing a good workout and good means of self-defense. "We accomplish an awful lot in a hour long class" says Paul. The low risk of injury played a significant role in his decision to practice Aikido, too. "Because of my profession, I need to be able to go to work the next day without injury. Aikido let's me do just that. Plus, I feel refreshed and revitalized after each class."Doug S., 55, has studied other martial arts in the past, however he prefers Aikido because of its more natural, flowing blend of form and function. "It's powerful, but graceful at the same time," says Doug. "And, it's really great for stress relief. When I'm grumpy after a long day at work, Aikido is a great way to focus on something non-work related for a while."Castle Rock Aikido is currently located inside Omega Gymnastics at 1609 Park Street in Castle Rock. You are welcome to come watch or try a class for free anytime. You can also an Aikido video clip of Sensei Jeff Albright demonstrating Aikido techniques by visiting their website http://www.craikido.com/. You can also reach them by calling 720-221-3665.

    2007-06-03 03:37:10
Today more than 800,000 of our family members, friends and neighbors are uninsured or under insured.  We cannot maintain our current system where access to health care continues to decrease at the same time that health care costs continue to rise. We must be able to provide affordable health care coverage for all residents.   Collectively, employers, the public sector and individuals all have an obligation to contribute to the funding of health care coverage. We can do something today to fix our ailing health insurance system—we can insure everyone with affordable health insurance coverage and preserve our choice of providers and health insurance plans. Please take the time to visit RXHealthQoutes.com and become informed. But more importantly, get involved in helping move us towards a solution. Just as no one issue created the current crisis; no single solution can cure our current health care system.  It’s going to take a coalition

Audi tees off Toronto residents with botched TT ads
    2007-05-19 22:05:05
Filed under: Marketing/Advertising, Audi Audi apparently thought it could pull one over on the residents of Toronto, but it got caught. The automaker from Ingolstadt applied for a permit from the Film and Television Office of Toronto to shoot a commercial that would allow it to place double “T” statues that measure six feet high and fifteen feet long all over the city for a period of three days. A press release issued by Audi, however, confirms that no commercial would be shot, but rather that the statues are meant to act as billboards advertising the new Audi TT. The placement of the statues as advertisements, though, violates the city’s signage laws. About 50 of the statues were placed around Toronto, some appearing in park settings where residents go to enjoy natural beauty and a peaceful environment in the city. Clearly, the statues are regarded as a major eyesore, and people are ticked off that Audi and its advertising agency, Maverick PR, bent the rules to pla

More information here: http://www.myspace.com/harpercollinscanada.The Line PainterBy Claire CameronIt’s 1:08 a.m. when Carrie’s car breaks down on the highway somewhere north of Lake Superior. It’s dark, the road is quiet, her cell phone is down, and she is alone. She took off from Toronto that morning, running from grief over the death of her boyfriend, and unable to cope with the truth about the events that led to it. The relief Carrie feels as a truck pulls up soon turns to fear after its driver offers her a lift. Frank, her would-be rescuer, is a line painter, putting lines on the road “to stop people from being killed.” But after Carrie gets in the truck, she starts to realize that this will be the road trip of her life—a trip of terror, transformation and forgiveness.
