Hijo de Domenico Gaetano y Maria (Gaetano Donizetti como lo conocemos hoy en día)Aunque su repertorio de compositor abarca un gran número de géneros, incluida la música religiosa, cuartetos de cuerda y obras orquestales, es sobre todo conocido por su obra lírica, componiendo hasta 75 óperas.A los ocho años es admitido en las Lezzioni caritatevoli di musica que dirigía Johannes Simon Mayr , Mayr influyó altamente en el joven Donizzeti, aproximándolo hacia los modelos del Clasicismo Vienes, lo que dio lugar a sinfonías, cantatas, cuartetos y quintetos que Donizzeti compuso siguiendo los modelos de Haydn y Mozart, cultivando a su vez la música sacra. Sin embargo el verdadero éxito le llegará en 1824 con dos de sus operas que recibieron un clamoroso recibimiento con pocos meses de diferencia: Zoraira di Granata (Roma) y sobre todo L´aio nell´imbarazzo, que lo lanzó en el exterior. A partir de este momento se ve obligado a una producción frenética (hasta ocho óperas en un año), por una demanda de un mercado operístico que lo había convertido en uno de sus favoritos.Su rival en el firmamento lírico italiano fue Vicenzo Bellini, a pesar de ello los dos grandes genios de la opera italiana se reconocieron mutuamente sus méritos musicales. Durante décadas Gaetano Donizetti había estado sufriendo de fiebre continua, dolores de cabeza y nauseas, acompañadas de una arritmia cerebral. Pasquale está encantado, porque ahora podrá desheredar a su desobediente sobrino, que no ha querido casarse al gusto del viejo.En cuanto se va el doctor a buscar a la novia, don Pasquale aborda a Ernesto (que es un chico a la moda: lee libros de poesía y no está muy atento a las manías del viejo) y después de ofrecerle por última vez una esposa rica y hermosa, declara que lo echa de casa por insistir en casarse con esa viuda pobretona que atiende por Norina. Ernesto no sabe si reír o preocuparse de veras y recomienda al viejo que, al menos, consulte primero al médico Malatesta, que Ernesto tiene por un fiel amigo. Sin embargo, con gran sorpresa por su parte, don Pasquale le comunica que se casa precisamente con la hermana del doctor.ACTO I, Cuadro II.-Norina (otra intelectual) está leyendo una novela de amor; la narración le hace pensar que ella conoce mucho mejor los recursos para dominar a los hombres que la protagonista de la novela. Llega un mensajero con una carta, en la que Ernesto le da la triste nueva de que ha sido desheredado, por lo que se va de Europa. Justo entonces llega Malatesta, quien se toma a broma la trágica misiva del enamorado Ernesto y prepara a Norina para la trama que han dispuesto. Norina, después de negarse primero a ello, muestra pronto una gran habilidad para la comedia. El viejo don Pasquale puede prepararse...ACTO II.-En un lamento de corte casi clásico, Ernesto se despide de su cómoda vida y se prepara a emigrar.Don Pasquale, entre tanto, se ha acicalado y se admira de su propio porte, a pesar de los setenta años que lleva encima. Da ordenes al mayordomo de que no entre nadie después de Malatesta y su acompañante. Éstos llegan enseguida: Norina vestida de un modo monjil y recatado y Malatesta finge tener dificultades en que esté en la habitación ¡con un hombre! Don Pasquale, encantado, le pregunta cosas a las que ella responde parcamente: nunca sale de casa, no sabe qué es el teatro ni quiere saberlo: coser, hacer calceta y cocinar, éstas son sus ocupaciones. Don Pasquale quiere ahora ver su rostro, cubierto por un espeso velo; ella se niega a descubrirse, pero obedece al punto a su hermano. Don Pasquale queda prendado de su belleza y quiere casarse en el acto. Malatesta ha traído ya al notario (un primo suyo, que se presta al juego), y en un momento se extiende el contrato de bodas. No hay ya más que firmar, pero el falso notario-se toma demasiado en serio su papel y exige dos testigos. Justo en ese momento Ernesto está abriéndose paso contra el mayordomo; don Pasquale lo hace entrar: vendrá bien como testigo. Reconociendo a Norina como novia del viejo, Ernesto está a punto de dar una escena, pero Malatesta lo calma: Ernesto comprende el juego, lo secunda y firma el acta matrimonial.Don Pasquale, contento con la boda, quiere besar a la novia, pero ella no se lo permite. A partir de aquí, todo lo que dice don Pasquale es contradicho por la temible esposa, que empieza a dar órdenes, dobla el sueldo a los criados, derriba muebles («antiguallas», dice) y exige más criados, caballos, coches, muebles, joyas y vestidos. Don Pasquale asiste horrorizado al vendaval femenino que se le ha impuesto y mientras Ernesto y Malatesta se ríen abiertamente cae aturdido en un sillón.ACTO III, Cuadro I.-Don Pasquale está repasando el montón de facturas que se ha acumulado en un sólo día. Una multitud de criados jóvenes va entrando con paquetes y depositan más facturas en el montón. La mente avara de don Pasquale sufre pensando en el gasto y medita cómo imponerse a la fiera de su esposa. Ésta, que había dicho desconocer el teatro, ahora se ha vestido de gran gala y se va a una función, sola. Don Pasquale quiere imponerse y ella le suelta un bofetón. El viejo rompe a llorar y poco le falta a Norina hacer lo mismo, pues cree que se ha pasado un poco con el pobre anciano. Pero la comedia debe continuar, y antes de marcharse y de aconsejarle que se meta en cama pronto, Norina deja caer un papelito. Don Pasquale lo recoge y se da cuenta atónito de que es un billete amoroso que cita a Norina en el jardín por la noche.Esto es demasiado. Hay que llamar a Malatesta. Don Pasquale se retira, medio inconsciente, momento que los criados aprovechan para comentar lo bien que se vive en aquella casa.Llega Malatesta: comprende muy bien que la llamada nocturna obedece a la esperada crisis. Don Pasquale aparece como un muerto que camina, ha perdido todo interés en la vida. Pero quiere vengarse de la afrenta y propone llamar a la autoridad. Malatesta tiene que convencerle de que adopte medidas menos extremas: bajarán juntos al jardín y si hallan a Norina en brazos de un amante, la echarán de la casa.ACTO III, Cuadro II.-En el jardín, Ernesto canta una bella romanza; llega luego Norina y entonan un sentido dúo de amor. En cuanto se ve llegar a don Pasquale con Malatesta, Ernesto se mete en la casa. don Pasquale no logra encontrar pruebas: Norina está en el jardín, pero ella alega que está "tomando el fresco".Malatesta interviene: le dice a don Pasquale que lo mejor es darle a Ernesto su viuda pobre, Norina; seguro que Sofronia no soportará a otra mujer en casa. En efecto, la supuesta Sofronia se niega en redondo a quedarse bajo el mismo techo. Ernesto llega a tiempo de que don Pasquale, siguiendo las indicaciones de Malatesta, le conceda cuatro mil escudos anuales de renta.Ante la disyuntiva el viejo acepta.
