    Can Sibling Rivalry Be Prevented?
    2008-07-19 02:41:35
Can sibling rivalry be prevented? We have different beliefs and different attitudes. We also have different styles on how to take care of our kids, but what are the right and wrong styles of caring to our children?Sibling rivalry can be frustrating to parents, but I think they only need good communication and equal distribution of needs. All parents love their children and will never give them trouble. Their only wish is to let their children become successful in every path they want to pursue.S

The Rivalry Has Hit An All-Time Low
    2008-05-05 15:23:00
Well a few months ago several Red Sox fans beat up a Yankees fan in Boston, sending the man to the hospital. If you thought that was as bad as it could get with this rivalry, this news from ESPN proves you were wrong.NASHUA, N.H. -- A woman accused of running down a man in her car after a Red Sox-Yankees argument in a bar never hit her brakes as she accelerated toward the small group he was in, a prosecutor said Monday."She never braked, and she accelerated at a high speed for about 200 feet. A Rivalry Begins: Jake Long vs Vernon Gholston
    2008-04-30 11:00:19
It seems that there's a new rivalry brewing in the NFL.  And this rivalry comes straight out of college. Jake Long and Vernon Gholston battled once a year in college when their respective teams, Michigan and Ohio State, faced off in their yearly big game.  Now, with Long a Dolphin and Gholston a Jet, these two will play each other two times per year, beginning on opening day in Miami. Well it seems Jim Tressel is spouting off at the mouth , and Jake Long certainly won't be too happy to hear this: "You know, in all the highlights on Saturday, I never saw any of those plays where he carried Jake Long into the quarterback's lap," Tressel said in a telephone interview yesterday from Columbus. The one highlight played consistently was of Gholston beating Long for a sack - the only one Long gave up all season - but Tressel said that wasn't the only play in which Gholston bettered Long. There just wasn't a sack to show for the other ones. Carried Jake Long into the QB's lap?&nb

Better Know A Rivalry: The Red Wings
    2008-04-23 09:13:13
So the Wings it is.  After the Flame-Outs lived up to their clever nickname once again by losing to the Jeremy Roenick-led San Jose Sharks last night (at least Mike Keenan got to yank a goalie, his favorite hobby), the matchups for the Western Conference Semifinals have been set. San Jose will face Dallas. Colorado will face Detroit.  Hoo boy. Now, before I get going, let me state one more time for the record: the "Blood Feud" between the Red Wings and the Avalanche is over.  It ended before the Lockout.  The lineups of both teams are almost completely different than the last time the two teams met in the playoffs (2002!).  With the exceptions of names like Hasek, McCarty, Forsberg, Foote and Sakic, nobody is left who has first-hand experience of the brutal, vicious regular season and playoff games between the two teams in the 90s and early Aughts. But that doesn't mean we, as Avalanche fans, wouldn't love to see the Dead Wings crash and burn hard in the

    Phils/Mets Turning Into REAL Rivalry
    2008-04-08 20:23:06
In this day in age, where the media is all around us 24/7, people are always over-hyping players, games, teams and rivalries in an effort to out-scoop the competition and make their stories sound more important and interesting than they really are. As fans, it has become tough to differentiate between the stories where the hype is justified and stories where the hype is more or less imaginary. There is always an "up and coming rivalry" that sportswriters are trying to push on us, most of which have no chance for longevity. See examples here and here. 99% of the time these rivalries never make their way to the upper echelon of Sox/Yanks, Duke/UNC, Michigan/OSU, Dodgers/Giants and so on. These are games where the rivalry is so strong and the teams so consistently good, that it becomes a national event, not just something talked about within certain cities. The Phillies and Mets are nowhere near that point, but they have a chance, and I think it would be great for baseball. Here's what

    Sibling rivalry can be dangerous
    2008-04-03 18:57:07
Sibling rivalry can be dangerous if children are left unsupervised. I can still remember how my siblings and I used to fight, hit each other, etc. The bad thing is, the stronger and bigger one wins-yep, especially the boys as they can punch! Having my children, I am seeing the same situation. They play together then the next thing I know they are fighting over a toy and hurt each other. I would

The Best Rivalry: Colorado vs. Detroit
    2008-03-10 00:00:00
Back in March of '96, what a long time ago A hit by Lemieux was made on Draper and many became filled with woe. The rivalry between Colorado and Detroit then had just begun Although many of the original players are no longer there, the feeling is not gone. Darren McCarty, the Wings' enforcing man, Went after Lemieux to the excitement of Detroit's fans. The Avalanche did not react to this well, On the fight's replays were where everyone's opinions dwelled. On these events, Detroit took Kris Draper's side. Their emotions and thoughts, the players did not hide. Colorado was upset about McCarty and their feelings did not go unheard, The media made sure they captured and recorded every single word. Three times the goalies came out to center ice to fight Each time they fought, further the rivalry did ignite. Nicknames were given to the worst battle of all, Such as 'Bloody Wednesday, Fight Night at the Joe' and worse describing the brawl. Every time they face other, the game becomes a dea

    The Rivalry Doesn't Need This
    2008-03-07 15:45:00
I'm surprised that an incident that occurred last Saturday night didn't get more attention on the news, especially here in New York.A Yankee fan and his girlfriend were in a bar in Cambridge, MA when they were accosted by three guys who were apparently Red Sox fans and started busting on him about being a fan of the Yankees (he was wearing a Yankee hat). The couple then walked out of the bar when the group of three white males attacked the Yankee fan, and he suffered head and facial injuries. Fortunately they were not serious injuries.More on the incident: http://www.wickedlocal.com/cambridge/homepage/x1637136069I was disturbed to hear that something like this happened. There was a similar incident last October, but the team loyalties were reversed. A Red Sox fan in a bar in Yonkers, NY got into an argument with two Yankee fans, and after he left the bar they attacked him and he was seriously hurt and spent time in the hospital. Some fans take their team loyalties way past the edge of d

    Duke - North Carolina Rivalry
    2008-02-04 20:30:23
The college basketball season officially started back in November. It got a little more exciting when conference play started, but now we can really look ahead towards March Madness because North Carolina and Duke finally meet. It is not new for these teams to be ranked in the top 5 (Duke - 2, UNC - 3). The winner of this game will have first place in the ACC and will be one step closer to a number 1 seed. It is certainly the greatest rivalry in college basketball and some say it is the best rivalry in all of sports largely due to the fact the schools are less than 10 miles apart. Last season, North Carolina swept the Blue Devils though both teams regular season finale wasn't without conflict. With the game in hand, Duke's Gerald Henderson fouled North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough giving Hansbrough a blood nose; Henderson was subsequently suspended by the conference. Nearly a year later, Henderson is anticipating the rematch. One x-factor will be if North Carolina's Ty Lawson

College Hoops: Rivalry and Revenge Spots
    2008-02-04 18:15:00
College basketball handicapping encompasses more than match-up angles and coaching. Home court, revenge, look-ahead spots and injuries all can be important factors when trying to determine who has the edge against the number. With conference play in full swing, revenge, rivalry and payback spots are all factors to be weighed. Last week I had a play on Syracuse when they were at Villanova. In my analysis on the game I wrote, "Nova was a winner at the Carrier Dome in the season's first meeting

    Rivalry Weekend Thoughts
    2007-11-25 11:50:00
Rivalry Week Record: 8-2 SU, 7-3 ATS, 2-8 O/USeason: 36-26 SU, 34-24-1 ATS, 28-32-1Mark Richt has done the best coaching job in the country since October 14th. This is very, very early, but Georgia is setting up very nicely for next year and a national title run. It is not totally inconceivable that Georgia can be in the BCS Championship. They need for Pitt to win, Oklahoma to win, and Tennessee to win. However, in my opinion you should have to win your conference to play for the MNC. See Nebraska 2001.With the Tennessee win, the Georgia Tech game became a $10+ million game for the Bulldogs because with a win they are likely headed to a BCS bowl game in the clubhouse at 10-2.Georgia Tech had 3 golden opportunities in their loss to Georgia to score 3 touchdowns. Georgia recovered two fumbles and knocked another out to get 3 touch backs. The biggest swing was on a fumble recovery by Tech which they fumbled out of the end zone to give Georgia the ball on their own 20 early in the 3rd quar

    Rivalry Week Continued
    2007-11-23 23:09:00
Rivalry Week is the best week of the college football season. Some will say the bowl games are the best week, but you don't have to listen to other team 365 days a year if you lose that game.North Carolina vs Duke 3:30 ESPNULine: NC –14, 47North Carolina leads 53-35-4A rivalry usually reserved for basketball season, but these two go at it hard on the football field as well. UNC has won 16 of the past 17 meetings. Despite a disappointing record, all of the Tar Heels losses this year have come by 7 points or less.Offense will be hard to come by as Duke ranks 117th in offense while Carolina checks in at 100. But Duke is also equally bad on defense allowing 440 ypg of offense. This could game could have a lot of turnovers as both teams are negative in turnover margin on the year. This is pretty big spread for a rivalry as big as this one. Duke has lost the last two by a combined four points despite being 7 and 21.5 point underdogs. North Carolina has much better talent, but you can

    Rivalry Week Iron Bowl
    2007-11-23 22:50:00
Auburn vs Alabama 8:00 ESPNLine: Aub –4.5, 44.5Alabama leads 38-32-1 I think Auburn-Alabama is the fiercest rivalry in all of college football. There are no pro sports teams in Alabama and the game has featured college football legends like Bear Bryant, Bo Jackson, Kenny Stabler, and Pat Sullivan. Auburn has won 5 in a row and going for a record 6th straight victory over the Tide. This players in this game will be overshadowed by the coaches: Tommy Tuberville and Nick Saban. Tuberville’s name has been linked to the Texas AM job. I think Tommy is just jockeying for a better contract from Auburn. Saban will be in his first Iron Bowl, but is familiar with the Tigers from his days at LSU. Auburn is coming off a bye week after a blowout loss to Georgia a week prior. Alabama had an embarrassing loss to Louisiana-Monroe last week causing Saban to conjure up comparisons to 9/11 when describing the loss’ effect on the team. Rumors have come out of Tuscaloosa that things are not well under

Auburn Georgia The South's Oldest Rivalry
    2007-11-09 16:45:00
The SEC East and ACC Atlantic Division title pictures could be a lot clearer after this weeks games.Season: 23-19, 24-15-1, 21-20-1Georgia vs Auburn 3:30 CBS Line: UGA -2, 44.5Open: UGA -1, 44A renewal of the South's Oldest Rivalry with a lot at stake in the SEC race as usual. The two hot topics coming into this game- the road team's success as of late and Auburn's run defense against a suddenly dangerous Georgia rush offense. The first topic is very true with another edition last year when Auburn was ranked 5th and Georgia was 6-4. The Bulldogs came in a took the Tigers behind the woodshed from the get go. There has also been a lot of talk regarding Auburn's run defense and how they stopped Arkansas cold on the ground. I agree that the Tigers are very stout, but the game vs the Razorbacks is a little misleading because Arkansas could not pass the ball downfield at all without Marcus Monk allowing Auburn to stack the line. Georgia's Matt Stafford is a much better QB than

    Shorter-Rodgers Rivalry Renewed in Middletown
    2007-06-11 12:23:00
I love stories like this one. Running legends Frank Shorter and Bill Rodgers are both 59 years old now, yet neither one can stand to lose to the other after all these years! I remember reading about their rivalry at the Middletown, NY Orange Classic 10K in SI when I was a kid in the early 1980s. (Man, those Kenny Moore articles were great, weren't they?) I remember Shorter being hampered by injuries all the time back then while Rodgers was in his prime. Yet Shorter always seemed to muster the courage to run through those injuries and win that race in his hometown. I was stunned to read that they're both still at each other a quarter of a century later! Shorter took it yet again, winning in 47:38 to Rodgers' 49:31.Perhaps the better story is Ed Whitlock, age 76, who was way ahead of both Shorter and Rodgers in the Classic with a 70th place (out of 783 finishers) in a time of 41:14. Whitlock runs three hours a day when training for marathons. Truly Phenomenal.

The Triple Crown Goes Back on the Shelf and A Rivalry
    2007-05-26 09:57:26
My toes were ‘curlin’ with excitement while I was watching the stretch run of the Preakness last Saturday and wondering if and when my chosen steed would ever change his leads. He finally did, and I suppose I can offer myself a pat on the back for picking Curlin to win, and even more for narrowing the competition down to him [...]

It’s Pretty Safe to Say It’s Now a Rivalry
    2007-05-25 17:58:40
PostGame Notes The Florida Marlins defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in walkoff fashion last night 5-4 behind a game winning double from Miguel Cabrera. The real fireworks of the night involved both teams benches and Dontrelle Willis needing to be restrained after exchanging words with the Phillies bench. The problem began when Phillies starter Jon Lieber hit Aaron Boone with a pitch in the second inning. Later in the inning, Lieber threw a pitch behind Willis, who stared back at Lieber. Things simmered down until the fourth, when Willis faced Lieber and started the at-bat with a pitch that sailed well behind Lieber. Plate umpire Rick Reed went out to talk to Willis, but Willis said Reed did not give him a warning. After Willis retired the next batter, Jimmy Rollins, to end the inning, Willis came off the mound shouting and pointing at the Phillies’ dugout. Quotes from the Game Dontrelle on Lieber’s wildness… ”The guy hasn’t hit anybody the whole y

    Flyers-Rangers rivalry may be back
    2007-03-22 13:55:00
Besides the KO heard around the hockey fighting world, which I posted about last night after it happened, there were two others fights on Wednesday night. In the same Flyers-Rangers game as the Orr KO on Fedoruk, Orr took on Ben Eager in the first period as well. Orr didn't KO Eager, but it was Orr early and Eager late in the fight. I give that one a draw. You can view that fight below. So is the Flyers-Rangers rivalry heating back up in this new NHL? I believe they play again later before the season ends. Maybe the Flyers will bring up Riley Cote to take Fedoruk's spot if Fedoruk is unable to play again this season. Their next meeting should be interesting.Ben Eager vs Colton OrrIn the Capitals-Sabres game, the two heavyweights had a rematch from their earlier fight this year where Peters nailed Brashear with some nice shots. But in this one it was all Brashear as he looked to overpower Peters, pulling him off balance and throwing punches as Peters tried to get loose. Decision to Bras

    Kobe-Shaq Rivalry Over?

In the clearest signal yet that this feud is old news, for the first time in four years the Lakers and Miami will not be playing each other [...]
