| A Brief History of “Roman Catholic” Anti-Semitism | | 2008-07-08 14:13:00 | | A Brief History of “Roman Catholic” Anti-SemitismYear 306: The Roman Catholic Church’s “Synod of Elvira” banned marriages and all contact between Christians and Jews.Year 315: Constantine made Christianity the “state” religion. His Edict of Milan extended religious tolerance to Christians, but Jews lost many of their rights. The edict also declared that Jews were no longer allowed to live in Jerusalem.Year 325: The Council of Nicea separated the celebration of Easter from the Jewish Passover. Its subsequent edict stated, “For it is unbecoming beyond measure that on this holiest of festivals we should follow the customs of the Jews. Henceforth let us have nothing in common with this odious people... We ought not, therefore, to have anything in common with Jews... our worship follows a ... more convenient course ... we desire, dearest brethren, to separate ourselves from the detestable company of the Jews ...

| | Fletch's Film Review: Roman de Gare | | 2008-06-11 16:21:00 | | It's Sunday night. Outside of The Fall, for which I have yet to write a review, Mrs. Fletch and I hadn't been to the theater much lately at all, both of us unimpressed by the output at the theaters in recent weeks. But we love going (and we love that Harkins popcorn), so I browse through the paper, scouring the ads to see what's playing and when. Unfortunately, we had no interest in seeing the latest releases (Zohan, Panda, SATC, etc.), and many of the indies out we had either already seen or weren't interested in. Three choices remained - movies that we had either not heard of or were painfully unaware of: Jellyfish, The Year My Parents Went on Vacation, and Roman de Gare. We read the synopses, checked out the ratings the paper gave them (all about the same, if I recall correctly) and made our decision. Whether I'm becoming a sucker for French films or the quality as of late has been especially high (Paris, je t'aime, 2 Days in Paris, Persepolis, etc.), I'm not sure, but Roman de Gare | | By: Blog Cabins | | |

| | The Roman Legion | | 2008-06-04 13:27:00 | | At the beginning, during the monarchy period, the Romans used the Greek phalanx as the pattern for their battle formations. When the Etruscans were expelled from power, ushering in the Roman Republic, the Latins made the first changes to the Roman Army, as the phalanx was abandoned and the early legion was developed. Three lines of soldiers were drawn up; the hastati in the front, the principes in the second row, and the triarii. The hastati were the youngest fighters. They carried body armour, a rectangular shield called scutum, which should remain the distinctive, protective equipment of the foot soldier throughout Roman history. As offensive weapons they carried a short, straight, double-edged sword called gladius, made not for slashing but for stabbing. They also used a rather short spear, the pilum, which had a point of soft metal, making it a weapon to be thrown at the enemy, rather than to jab with. When the pilum penetrated an enemy shield, its barbed point bent down, making it | | By: Stories & Straight Thoughts | | |

| | The Roman Empire | | 2008-05-27 16:23:00 | | The Roman Empire The Roman Empire is the period of the ancient Roman civilization characterized by an autocratic form of government and large territorial gains in Europe and the Mediterranean. Usually, "Roman Empire" is the term used to describe the Roman state after the demise of the Republic and the advent of Octavian, first as a Triumvir, then as Augustus, imperator, "commander-in-chief", until the fall of the empire in 5th century AD.The Latin term Imperium Romanum (Roman Empire), probably the best-known Latin expression where the word imperium denotes a territory, indicates the part of the world under Roman rule. Roman expansion began in the days of the Republic, but reached its zenith under Emperor Trajan. Tiberius (14–37)Augustus had three grandsons by his daughter Julia. None of the three lived long enough to succeed him. He therefore was succeeded by his stepson Tiberius Caesar Augustus (or Tiberius I), born Tiberius Claudius Nero , the son of his wife Livia from her first | | By: Stories & Straight Thoughts | | |
| | Roman Republic | | 2008-05-27 09:27:00 | | The Roman Republic (From res publica: "public matter") The Roman Republic was the phase of the ancient Roman civilization characterized by a republican form of government. The republican period began with the overthrow of the Monarchy and the establishment of a new government headed by Lucius Junius Brutus and Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus, who became the first consuls in c. 509 BC. The Republic lasted over 450 years until its subversion, through a series of civil wars, into the Principate form of government and the Imperial period. The precise event which signaled the transition of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire is a matter of interpretation. Historians have variously proposed the appointment of Julius Caesar as perpetual dictator (44 BC), the Battle of Actium (2 September 31 BC), and the Roman Senate's grant of Octavian's extraordinary powers under the first settlement (January 16, 27 BC), as candidates for the defining pivotal event. | | Roman Catholics in US more in tune with Pope than Rome! | | 2008-04-15 11:21:09 | | The Washington Post and ABC News have commissioned a poll of Roman Catholic thinking in the USA. The poll is perceived as showing that nearly half those respondents consider the Pope and the Church out of touch with their views. It then goes on to give percentages and information about views given. The 45% who think the Church should bend with the wind are in favour, or don't mind, women as priests. They also want other things, which are not identified as such. But the poll says that Pope Benedict is a forceful advocate for traditionalism, including returning prayers, vestments and music from earlier eras to church services. This would suggest that some priests are conducting services in garb somewhat different from vestments, are making up extemporary prose, and plucking their guitars. Not being a Roman Catholic in America, I can only guess!I fear the tragedy of clerical abuse has clouded some of the responses. Roman Apparel has partnered with this group to help raise money for the education of young orphans recently rescued from a life of sexual slavery in South East Asia. For this cause they've created this SOLD Project T-Shirt. The t-shirt costs $31 and half of the proceeds are going directly to the SOLD Project education fund. According to Will Roman (owner of the Roman Apparel) the design features "a beautiful watercolor design which evokes a feeling of childhood innocence". I'd say this is a very beautiful t-shirt no mater what, but if you can help these children by purchasing it, that's even better!

| | The Law: Roman-Dutch mismatch in Sinhala Buddhist society | | 2007-10-01 10:59:35 | | Law is one of the corner stone of the society and we have been keeping the foreign Roman-Dutch law, even after sixty years since independence. It is a shame for a country, having more than 75% of its population consist of Theravadha Buddhist, still relying on Roman-Dutch law which is based on Christianity.Mechanism based on right to lieUnlike the traditional eastern stream of law that is based on truthfulness and justice, Roman-Dutch law is completely based on mere debating based on right to defend and truthfulness play very little value there. This western law system has introduced a third party named lawyer who can lie in all means to defend his client and he has no liability for that. Therefore, this system is based on sheer logic and it has very little concern for human values. In a nut shell, it is just a tussle between two licensed liars while the actual parties involved in the dispute are playing very passive role.Buddhist culture based on moral valuesThe minimum moral basis of a Buddhist is the Five Precepts (Pañcasila). The standards set by the precepts are simple — no intentional killing, stealing, having illicit sex, lying, or taking intoxicants. It's entirely possible to live in line with these standards. Not always easy or convenient, but always possible.Clear-cutThe precepts are formulated with no ifs, ands, or buts. This means that they give very clear guidance, with no room for waffling or less-than-honest rationalizations. An action either fits in with the precepts or it doesn't.Right speech, a key element in middle path"And what is right speech? Abstaining from lying, from divisive speech, from abusive speech, & from idle chatter: This is called right speech."— Buddha (Magga-vibhanga Sutta)Lawyer (Professional Liar)There are only few professions that directly conflict with the Five Precepts (Pañcasila) .A butcher who kill animals, a robber who steal others property, a prostitute who involved in commercial sex, and lastly it is a practicing lawyer who has to lie (there is about 50% of chance that a practicing lawyer has to lie in the court each day!) in the (Roman-Dutch) courts. It is strange that while all the other stated professions are considered as shameful; still profession of law has still being regarded high in our society. The lawyers are governed by code of conducts and ethics and one of the codes is that ‘they have to accept client regardless of him being the accuser or accusedâ€, and of course, only one party will be innocent and lawyer whom is hired by other party has to defend his client by lying in all manner. Usually high earned lawyers are those representing for accused in murdering and other criminal acts.In current Roman-Dutch law system every lawyer has no option but to obligate in this mechanism willingly or not !The danger in lyingThe person who lies, who transgress in this one thing, transcending concern for the world beyond:there's no evil, he might not do.- The Buddha, Itivuttaka (Kuddaka Nikaya)It's not good, the doing of the deedthat, once it's done, you regret, whose result you reap crying, your face in tears.- The Buddha, Dammapada (Balavagga)I might argue that lawyer is profession and he is not lying for his behalf.“chethanaham bikkawe kamman vadami†– The BuddhaThe lawyer’s intention for lying is earn money and he is lying for money and he is clearly committing demerit act.If doing sin as part of profession is allowed, the Buddha may have exempt butchers (who kill wage) and prostitutes (who sexually misconduct for money) as well.Politics and LawThe bulk of the members of the parliament are lawyers, or in plain word, professional liars. It is no wonder lying is a principal in politics! It is the court that has taken away the fear of lying of these MPs. Because of the political power for lawyers, unlike butchers and prostitutes, this profession of liars has kept high status in the society. However, one thing that all the lawyers must remember is regardless of their social status, they have to face the natural law of the nature, the karma, in next lives. What can we do?It is lawyers themselves that lie, so the greatest responsibility is within the lawyers (if they really do not want to go to hell) to push to change this Catholic law system. All the Buddhists should unite and demand for law system which is based on core Buddhist values or at least for more reforms for the existing system so that it is based on truthfulness rather than power of lying. | | By: Lanka Rising | | |

This kind of thinking has inevitably brought about a reexamination of the rise of Christianity, which took place under Roman colonial rule. How did Rome look from the viewpoint of an ordinary Galilean in the first century of the Christian era? What should this mean for our own understanding of and relationship to Jesus of Nazareth? In the past, Jesus was often "depoliticized," treated as a religious teacher imparting timeless truths for all people. Now, however, many scholars see Jesus as a political leader whose goal was independence from Roman rule so that the people could renew their traditional way of life under the rule of God. It is reportedly an ancient industrial complex for fish salting. Drilling work carried out by a French archaeologist fifty years ago showed that the site was a Roman industrial counter. The remains of the salting and treatment unit include several installations whose size shows a huge production capacity probably destined for export to other regions of the Mediterranean. There is a space of fish preparation which includes sixteen salting basins, a huge underground tank, a boiler house equipped with three levels of heating for drying the fish and wareh | | By: THE VIEW FROM FEZ | | |
| | CSS Typography - Taking back Times new Roman | | 2007-05-09 20:09:41 | | Taking Back: Times New Roman
Yes all designers HATE times new roman, but let’s face it — on the web we are very limited on what fonts we can safely use. I don’t know about anyone else, but I am getting a little board of seeing Georgia as the only serif font on the web.
However there is hope. Yes times new roman is ugly, it is overused, and often by amateurs. However we can in fact use it to our advantage with the power of CSS and typography.
Using font sizing, weight, spacing, and leading we have a huge variety of options to tweak times new roman into something attractive. I am of the personal opinion that times new roman at small sizing is just plain hard to read. However if we blow it up we can see some of the more of the subtle styling of the font.

| | Using Roman Blinds In Decorating | | 2006-12-12 11:30:00 | | Roman shades are oblong shaped pieces of material that are designed to be lowered and raised in folds of equal size. The construction is a combination of rings, drawstrings and poles that span the width of the blind. When totally extended, the blind is usually flat, although some designs have small folds around the area of the poles. The blind is suspended from a panel which is fixed to the top of the window frame, or the wall above the window. It is possible to add a lining to roman blinds, both for increased insulation in cold weather, and to add privacy. Being a single piece of fabric these style blinds can be quite transparent when the interior lights are on, unless they are well lined. The lining also makes them heavier and can therefore make them hang better. These are a particularly versatile type of window covering and can be used in virtually any room of the house to add a stylish touch. When decorating you should consider roman blinds as a simple but very effective form of window covering. They can be made from a range of materials to suit your particular tastes, or existing décor. They can give a homely touch to bedrooms or kitchens, and can be used as sheers together with drapes to really enhance that formal dining area.Making your own roman blinds is a very simple task for anyone with a sewing machine and a little patience. You can pick up a variety of patterns and designs from interior design magazines, sewing stores or the internet. If you do not feel up to the job, however, there are a fantastic range of reasonably priced roman blinds available in home stores nationwide. You should have no trouble finding something to complement whichever room you are redecorating.Roman shades are an eye-catching and very fashionable alternative to curtains and they can really add to the feel of whichever room you are decorating, whether that is rich, soft and old fashioned, or cutting edge minimalist.
