    Day at Rome
    2008-07-12 12:48:00
On 1st July, we went to Rome, Italy from London Stansted airport to Rome Ciampino by Ryanair. Our first impressions about Rome weren’t great. It was too hot and sunny. The airport looks very small. We were expecting a cooler weather than Malaysia but it wasn’t. The temperature was similar to Malaysia, around 31-34°C. Out of luck, the air conditioner of bus we took (Terravision) from the airport to the Rome city was broken. So, we suffered inside the bus throughout the journey to the city.

Knight Frank's global real estate market annual review reveals that prime office rents in Manchester are now £32 a sq ft, making it the 17th most expensive office address in the world - behind Moscow, London and Paris, but ahead of Rome, Sydney and Los Angeles.David Porter, head of north west commercial property at Knight Frank in Manchester, said: "These statistics underline the city's high profile and its draw to inward investors. Manchester's culture and lifestyle have proved to be extremely successful in attracting a young yet highly skilled population, putting it on a par with major capital cities across the world."

    St. Peters - Rome
    2008-07-03 11:49:23
St. Peters - Rome, originally uploaded by T.SC.The dome of St. Peters in Rome with the baldachin by Bernini beneath. Shot with Ilford Delta 3200The dome of St. Peters is a building which was originally built as a temple to the seven deities of the seven planets in the state religion of Ancient Rome. Agrippa's Pantheon was destroyed along with other buildings in a huge fire in 80 AD; the current building dates from about 125 AD, during the reign of the Emperor Hadrian, as date-stamps on the bricks reveal. It was totally reconstructed with the text of the original inscription added to the new facade, a common practice in Hadrian's rebuilding projects all over Rome. Hadrian was a cosmopolitan emperor who traveled widely in the east and was a great admirer of Greek culture. He seems to have intended the Pantheon, a temple to all the gods, to be a kind of ecumenical or syncretist gesture to the subjects of the Roman Empire who did not worship the old gods of Rome, or who (as was increasingl

Rome: The Crisis of the Republic
    2008-05-26 15:20:00
The Crisis of the RepublicRome had begun as a small city-state. It's constitution, its government, its social structure, and its moral values were those of a small, mainly agrarian state. All of these, the constitution, government, social structure, and values, adapted well to the governing of Italy. The Empire, however, which Rome had stumbled into by accident, provoked a profound crisis in Roman society, government, and morals. In particular, the Second Punic War created vast disparities in wealth. Up until the Second Punic War, the plebeians were farmers, craftsmen, or laborers. They would farm their own land that, even though it was small, was still their property. As laborers or craftsmen, they worked for decent wages (or the equivalent of wages). However, Hannibal had razed the countryside; while the wealth sat secure within the walls of Rome, thousands of people had their farmlands and houses destroyed. With no land they had no work and so began to flood the cities. The wealthy

    Rome: The Conquest of Greece
    2008-05-26 14:20:00
The Conquest of the Hellenistic EmpiresWhile Rome was engaged in internal politics and the conquest of Italy, the Macedonian Greeks first conquered the Greek mainland and peninsula, and then, literally, the whole of the world. By 324 BC, when Rome still didn't control much of Italy and the city was still struggling with friction between the patricians and the plebeians, the entire world east of Rome, everything, was under the control of a single man, Alexander the Great. While there were numerous Greek cities on the Italian peninsula and while Rome was heavily influenced by Greek culture and thought, the Romans didn't seem to pay this ground-shaking development with much concern. Although the Hellenistic world fractured in pieces, nonetheless the end of the fourth century saw three great empires controlling the world east of Rome. The Romans, however, didn't seem overly concerned, occupied with problems of their own; the Romans, you see, were not particularly interested in world domina

    Rome: The Punic Wars
    2008-05-26 13:14:00
CarthageThe greatest naval power of the Mediterranean in the third century BC was the North African city of Carthage near modern day Tunis. The Carthaginians were orginally Phoenicians and Carthage was a colony founded by the Phoenician capital city of Tyre in the ninth century BC; the word "Carthage" means, in Phoenician, "the New City." The Phoenicians, however, were conquered by the Assyrians in the sixth century BC, and the conquered by the Persians; an independent Phoenician state would never again appear in the Middle East. Carthage, however, remained; it was no longer a colony, but a fully functioning independent state. While the Romans were steadily increasing their control over the Italian peninsula, the Carthaginians were extending their empire over most of North Africa. By the time that Rome controlled all of the Italian peninsula, Carthage already controlled the North African coast from western Libya to the Strait of Gibraltar, and ruled over most of southern Spain, and the

It passed quickly in a diagonal trajectory and has been dismissed by the meteorologist at WISH-TV in Indianapolis, where the image was noticed and the frame grabbed, as a bird. The Piazza del Popolo is a square in Rome. Property Values rise on Rome's Outskirts
    2008-04-24 17:46:00
If, on the other hand, you are looking for a real bargain, one option is to look in Rome’s so-called ‘ethnic neighbourhoods’ where prices have been slack recently. A recent report in Italian daily Il Sole 24 Ore points out that Italy’s growing number of foreigners is also one of its fastest growing groups of new home-owners. Yet, despite the growth in demand prices are fairly steady because the areas in question tend to be more depressed neighbourhoods on major city outskirts, or even in the surrounding provinces.

Roman Catholics in US more in tune with Pope than Rome!
    2008-04-15 11:21:09
The Washington Post and ABC News have commissioned a poll of Roman Catholic thinking in the USA. The poll is perceived as showing that nearly half those respondents consider the Pope and the Church out of touch with their views. It then goes on to give percentages and information about views given. The 45% who think the Church should bend with the wind are in favour, or don't mind, women as priests. They also want other things, which are not identified as such. But the poll says that Pope Benedict is a forceful advocate for traditionalism, including returning prayers, vestments and music from earlier eras to church services. This would suggest that some priests are conducting services in garb somewhat different from vestments, are making up extemporary prose, and plucking their guitars. Not being a Roman Catholic in America, I can only guess!I fear the tragedy of clerical abuse has clouded some of the responses. However, it is hard to see that this is representative on such a small samp

When in Rome – a Primer for Barack Obama
    2008-04-12 22:31:20
NOT READY FOR PRIME TIMEOne of the things that bothers me about Barack Obama is his obvious lack of experience and his abject inexperience and immaturity even though he was born in 1961.  Perhaps it is just our culture that coddles men now.  Maybe it is his relative inexperience and the fact that he has lived a fairly sheltered existence, with little actual life experience – very little seasoning.  I don’t know all the ups and downs of his life, all the little disappointments and heartaches.  From his basic biography it is obvious he lived the life many kids ...

    Closseum, Rome Italy
    2008-03-01 05:22:00
Husband took photo from the top floor Husband and I had a vocation last year in Italy and, of course, we did not forget to visit the most famous monument in Ancient Rome, one 7 wonders of the world in Roman the Colosseum (70 - 82 A.D.) Rome, Italy. This is the the largest ever built in the Roman Empire. It is one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering. The Colosseum is so huged and with the accomodations for 60,000 seated and 10,000 standing, all of whom could enter and leave in a matter of minutes, courtesy of 80 entrances. The Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. The area in which performances took place was a wooden floor covered with sand. The Latin word for sand is harena, and this gave us the word "arena". It measures 83 m by 48 m. Below the arena is a maze of underground passageways called hypogeum (Latin for "underground"). It has two levels of subterranean tunnels and cages for the performers and beasts to wait before entering

The city is among the best tourist destinations of the world and houses some world class hotels in both, luxury hotels and budget hotel category.Rome is one of the most visited cities in the world tourism map. Rome is a big city of Europe. Most of the main attractions of the city are situated at Central Rome. These attractions are too close to each other, so a fit person can travel to these attractions by himself without indulging on any kind of expenses on traveling. In Rome, the new developed area is very well connected by the public transport, while on the other hand the older part of the city is not frequently attached with transport means. So you have to decide that whether you want your hotel to be near transport for day trips outside the city? Or do you want to wander back to your palazzo along tiny medieval streets? Rome Tourist Information: Weather in Rome, Italy
    2008-02-01 09:01:00
Author: Daniel Jowsseyvia articlesbase.comAutumn Weather in RomeWithout fail, Romans recommend that the best time to travel to Rome is from mid-September to October. Yes, it might rain, but the temperatures turn out to be quite nice, even if it is getting a tiny bit chilly at night. Almost no one recommends November, but I've had very good luck the last few years with weather in the first half of November.Spring Weather in RomeMay has almost the same temperatures as October, and April, while you're likely to feel chilly at night, is almost as good. The effects upon tourism and the tourist industry could be numerous, though I will only mention a couple. Many people complain about hotel and apartment rates increasing, not only during the summer months, but throughout the whole year. And quite right I say, when there are 300 rooms with air-conditioning systems set to -5 degrees Celsius all day, (whilst the guests themselves are stripping off beside the pool trying to soak up every last hea

Rumble: A Lazy Saturday in Rome
    2007-11-05 00:50:00
Tine and the girls were here last week. The first days, the weather sucked. Rain, dark, depressive. On Friday everything opened up, and Saturday was as glorious a day as it could be.Here is a menu to spend a Saturday in Rome:1/ Late morning, you drive to Fiumicino, at the sea:2/ You pick your usual Cafe, with a terrace, and have a breakfast consisting of a Cafe Latte and one or two cornetti (croissants). During breakfast, you admire your two girls and how much they have grown in the past month.3/ Take a walk alongside the port of Fiumicino. Stand still by the small things. People sitting in the sunshine, chatting. Fishermen mending the nets or preparing the boats for next week's trip.4/ Then, in all laziness, drive off to town and scout the Campo di Fiori market. Suck up all the odours of flowers, spices, fish, meat on the roast, vegetables and fruits. Indulge into the crowds around the market stands. Enjoy the laughter and to-and-fro shouting of the vendors.5/ End up at a restaurant,

    Historic Hotels in Rome
    2007-10-26 18:12:00
Author: MisheleVia articlesbase.comAs a tourist, sometimes the best thing about a vacation is the comfortable hotel. So while you are visiting Rome, Italy, why not try one of the many historic hotels? Between visiting beautiful historic fountains, the Coliseum, the Vatican Museum and enjoying the night life in Trastevere, you’ll need a cozy place to relax in the evening, but don’t let the vacation stop the moment you arrive at your hotel. There are plenty of exquisite hotels that only add to the experience of a true Roman holiday.Suggested Historic Rome Hotels Amidst the city streets of Rome are lovely historic hotels like D’Inghilterra. Founded in 1845, the hotel’s guest list has included Hans Christian Anderson and Mark Twain. You understand why this is one of the most popular hotels when you first see the location, which sits close to the Spanish Steps. It’s unique interior style makes heads turn. With a delectable restaurant, Café Romano, this makes for a stunning all inclusive five star hotel. Not far from the Vatican Museum is an historic district called “Prati”. Within the floors of an ancient palace, is the Les Chambres D’Or. The quiet atmosphere and sophisticated style and grace are revealed at every turn. You get some of the best views of the Eternal City when you stay at the Les Chambres D’Or.How to Pick the Right Historic Hotel in RomeRome has many culturally intoned historic hotels, and choosing the right one for your stay may be important.First, figure out the tourist destinations you are interested in. Is there a certain museum you would like to see? Do you only have a short weekend to stay in Rome? Factors like these may be of some assistance if you want to get the most out of your vacation. For example, if you are going to visit for a short while, you could pick out the museums and all the places you would like to see, and then pick a hotel that is center to everything you want to do. You would not want to pick a hotel that is on th

    St. Angelo Castle - Rome
    2007-10-05 09:20:00
The castle was originally built as a mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian in 139 AD. Since then it has played many roles: a military fortification, a prison and a place of safety for the Pope during times of political unrest. A corridor links the castle with the Vatican Palace. The massive fortress of St. Angelo Castle takes its name from the vision of the Archangel Michael by Pope Gregory the Great in the 6th century, as he led a procession across the bridge, praying for the end of the plague of Black Death. The many rooms in the castle are extremely interesting: the bathroom of Clement VII decorated by Giulio Romano, the Sala Paolina with illusionistic frescoes by Tibaldi and Perin del Vaga, the historical prisons section, called the Mouth of Hell, where Cellini, Giordano Bruno, Cagliostro were imprisoned. This splendid bridge, built in the 2nd century links St. Angelo Castle to Campo Marzio. The bridge is adorned with statues of St. Paul and St. Peter. Rumble: More Rome
    2007-09-19 07:49:00
Once upon a time the Romans decided to build a highway from Rome to Brindisi, one of their main naval bases. That highway - the Appia Antica - still exists today, 2000 years later. Just four kilometers from the center of Rome, this old cobblestone road, littered with ruins, dotted with Mediterranean pine trees and cypresses, runs through wheat and grass fields as if it was laying in the middle of nowhere. That is yet another thing I like about Rome: there are a lot of green strips, and the city seems very condensed. Drive for five minutes from the center and you are in the midst of fields and vineyards. Very different from home, where once you leave Brussels center, you never come to a point where you think 'Ah, now I am in the country side'.

    Modern Rome
    2007-09-18 11:43:00
Author: Christian DerlagenVia Articlesbase.comCaput mundi, or the head of the world, is the Latin term many inhabitants of Rome use to indicate the importance of their city in world history. But the head could use a little rejuvenation. Although the countless historical monuments and artistic jewels still hold a great attraction for the millions of tourists that visit the Eternal City every year, the city seemed to have missed the connection with a new generation of visitors that are also looking for the 21st century vibe of the Italian capital. On matters of music, modern art or trendy nightclubs, Rome could not compete anymore with other European cities such as London, Berlin or Barcelona. But today that seems to change. Design-hotels, minimalistic restaurants and number of new centres for modern art and architecture are rapidly conquering their position in the “dolce vita” of young Romans. If you are planning to visit Rome, do not only spend your time between the wonderful monuments of antiquity and baroque, but save some to enjoy the fresh wind blowing through the city. If you want to discover modern Rome, here are some suggestions:The new 'Parco della Musica' has put the city back on the list for classical music. This architectural wonder north of the center, not very far from the Vatican City, was designed by Italy’s most famous architect Renzo Piano who describes the complex as a “cultural factory”. It houses a number of halls for classical music, dance, cinema and festivals and is a true wonder for eye and ear.Just next to the Tiber river, on the Piazza Augusto Imperatore, is the new, revolutionary museum that houses the ancient peace altar of emperor August. The entirely white-and-glass building is a design of the American architect Richard Maier and it is the first modern building in the historic centre of Rome for decades. The structure has been highly controversial, but is a great example of how beautiful the combination of an antique monument

    Rumble: Amazing Rome
    2007-09-18 08:22:00
Rome is an amazing city. While I had always been apprehensive to live in a big European city again (that was one of the things I ran away from, when leaving Belgium twelve years ago), Rome is not what I had expected.Ok, traffic is hectic, but hey, I live 30 km away, 200 meters from the sea. There is a pollution haze I see over town every morning I drive in from the coast. And there are loads of tourists. Still, each time I wander around in town, my mind blanks and all the impression of smells, colours, history just come rushing in.Last weekend, Tine came over, and we walked into town. Her first visit to Rome, and she liked it! A view of the inner city, taken from the hill near the Spanish Embassy. Trastevere, a rustic neighbourhood in the center. Of course, a sight not to miss: the Forum Romanum: over 2,000 years of history. Tine enjoying lunch in Campo Fiori.

The Benefits to Reserve an Accommodation in Central Rome
    2007-09-04 11:49:00
Author: Paola Lo RussoRome has a vast number of pensioni and hotels, but it is always best to book in advance. This article has the purpose to explain where I suggest to reserve hotels in Rome and the benefits to reserve an accommodation (hotel or apartment) in this area. The area from Piazza del Popolo to Piazza Venezia and from the Spanish Steps to the Tiber is the medieval centre of Rome, the Centro Storico. It also comprises the Reinassance Quarter, a dense, wedge-shaped area past Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, but that area – somewhat different in character – is described below. Here, however, is mixture of tourists and Romans in an areaLively and exuberant, crowded day and night, yet retaining its historic charm; the financial and political centre of the modern capital; and large modernised apartments in centuries-old palazzo that make it a convenient and exciting area in which to live.Centro Storico refers to an area that included the Campus Martius in ancient Rome. Priced Out of Rome
    2007-08-30 01:44:00
According to real estate agents at Tecnocasa, a real estate agency, sale prices in Zagarolo vary from 2,100 euros ($2,870) per square meter, or $267 per square foot in the historic center to 1,700 euros ($2,325) per square meter, or $216 per square foot outside of town. But even relatively wealthy people have thought twice about buying in the city in recent years as prices for luxury properties in the historic center now average 9,000 euros ($12,300) per square meter, or $1,143 per square foot, while a luxury home near the Spanish Steps can cost as much as 18,000 euros ($24,625) per square meter, or $2,289 per square foot.

When in Rome--do What the Romans Do!
    2007-08-28 05:13:00
author : Roy E. K.If you have taken the time and expense to visit Rome, why would you be concerned about home? So, you have planned this trip to Rome for months-you need to get away, to forget about things for awhile and enjoy all that Rome has to offer. Everyone needs a vacation, a change of pace, an opportunity to experience something different. So why is it that two days after you have arrived in Rome, you are thinking about things at home? Your focus is not where you are. Your mind constantly is returning to what may be going on at home. Your job is occupying much of your minds attention. You left home to experience Rome, not to dwell on things thousands of miles away. Your home will be there when you get back. Your job will be there and so will your family and friends. How much sense does it make to be dwelling on these things? You have 14 days, and for two of them you have not been in the moment. If fact your time has been spend looking for familiar things- food, surroundings and en

Rome: "I'm searching for your face, Lord"
    2007-08-26 16:55:00
An airline with a difference is due to take to the skies on Monday. Its slogan: "I'm searching for your face, Lord". Flights will be chartered from Rome by the Vatican. The first will be to Lourdes, followed by other places of pilgrimage, including Santiago de Compostela in Spain, Guadeloupe in Mexico and Fatima in Portugal. The Italian cargo airline Mistral Air, which will operate the flights, is not promising miracle cures, but it does say it will show mercy, if not charity, when it comes to setting fares.

Pole Vault & 100m Showdowns Take Center Stage in Rome
    2007-07-13 14:27:23
Click here to read an interview with meet director Luigi D'Onofrio, who complains about the depletion of his long-distance events, "some of the best distance races of the year." The entire Ethiopian contingent has withdrawn from the Golden Gala meet. They were "diverted by their national federation because of the African Championships." Here's a lengthy preview of the meet. It is an IAAF Golden League event with a million bucks at stake. Perhaps the premier event of the meet will be the Pole Vault showdown between Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia, who is still vying for the jackpot along with three other athletes, and Jenn Stuczynski of the USA. Click here to read an article specific to that Pole Vault showdown. Also featured will be a Caribbean 100m duel between 2nd cousins – Jamaican Asafa Powell and Bahamian Derrick Atkins. Powell, fresh off an injury, anchored a 4x100m victory for Team Jamaica in Lausanne Tuesday night then declared himself fit for the season. An interesting – but ultimately meaningless – race will be the rematch between Sanya Richards and Team USA for the women's 400m Dash: DeeDee Trotter, Natasha Hastings, and Mary Wineberg. You might recall (see video below) that Trotter won the U.S. National race that determined the Team USA representatives for Osaka, while Hastings and Wineberg overtook a fading Richards for the final two spots. The 22 year-old sprinter will have to console herself by going for the $1,000,000.00 Golden League jackpot, for which she is still eligible, and by trouncing Team USA. If she wins tomorrow, should we again debate the seemingly imperfect selection process of the USATF, or should we simply resign ourselves to that reality (that there is no perfect selection process) and move on?

Rome Is Too Big To Have Been Built In One Day
    2007-06-16 07:00:23
The following journal entry was written Friday, July 31, 1998: I met a whole bunch of friendly people last night from all over the world: Australia, Canada,England, Scotland, and Norway. The 18 year old Scottish guy was traveling with his skateboard, so I asked him about what that was like. One of the Norwegian girls was a nurse. One of the Canadians was an airplane technician/engineer. There was a beautiful girl from Canada reading Kafka’s “The Basic,” and I couldn’t take my eyes off her. I ended up getting a little too drunk by midnight. Instead of staying up and talking some more, I had to lie down and pass out. But you definitely meet more people traveling alone, and so far the freedom has been enjoyable. I still have to work out some things like finding and sitting with people who speak English on the trains. This means I should be waiting a little before I get on the trains. I talked with a girl from New Hampshire who was traveling alone. She seemed to en

    Search For Hotels in Rome
    2007-02-15 16:58:00
There are so many hotel search websites around, all offering 80% discounts, that it's hard to know where to go when searching for hotels in Rome.A search on Google brings up 16,600,000 returns. That's just ridiculous!I know Rome is sometimes refered to as la Città Eterna, or Eternal City, but there aren't even that many 'hotel rooms' in Rome; if you wanted to sleep in a different one every night, for the rest of your life.If there were, you'd be on this planet for over 45,479 years. Now that's pretty eternal. When I took a look at the Rome Hotels section, on Search Hotels, I found myself looking at a moving panoromic image of Amsterdam. Now why would I want to be looking at a mini webcast of a city at the other end of Europe, if I wanted to find a nice hotel room in Rome?A little search box next to it had two destination options: Amsterdam and Barcelona. How strange. So what's the deal on Rome? There were four pictures of 'Rome Hotel specials' and if I scrolled down, offers for Amsterdam Hotels, Paris Hotels, London Hotels, Prague Hotels, Dublin Hotels and even New York Hotels. Why try and confuse someone who's looking for a hotel in Rome?I think I'll do what I always do when I visit Rome by train. Walk out of the station and check into the first hotel with a clean room. Unless they have a picture of Amsterdam on the wall in reception.Or maybe I'll treat myself to a few nights at a hotel with a pool, like the Crowne Plaza; a little outside of the city.Technorati: hotels in rome

    Proverb Dictionary -Go and Rome-
    2007-01-22 03:54:00
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do” I think most people have heard this old saying. Of course, the meaning is that it is the way people follow a land customs and culture there. This proverb is said in Japanese as well. “Go ni ittewa Go ni shitagae(郷に入っては郷に従え)” Go(郷) means hometown. If I translate this directly, I would say “when in hometown, follow the town”When you in a different country like Japan which has unique culture and customs, you may have trouble to adjust it. However, it is the best way to follow the way of the land to melt into the place.
