| Update: Steven White removed from 40-man Roster | | 2008-06-20 12:38:00 | | FROM JOEL SHERMAN :Righty Steven White has passed through waivers and was removed from the Yankee 40-man roster, but will remain with the organization. The New York Yankees had hoped that White's power arm could be harnessed and that he would be in position this season to either be promoted to the majors as a starter or reliever. But while he has pitched poorly others have moved passed him on the organizational depth chart. So the Yanks decided to remove him from the 40-man roster at a time when they thought they could sneak him through waivers and retain him.White, who turned 27 last week, is 4-6 with a 6.61 ERA in Triple-A, where he has appeared in 17 games, 10 of those starts. The Yanks did not have an immediate corresponding move. But the removal of White from the 40-man likely frees the spot for Sidney Ponson to be put on the 40-man roster next week. Ponson, recently signed by the Yanks, is the most probable candidate to be elevated to pitch in Friday's doubleheader against the New | | By: The Evil Empire | | |

POP QUIZ!
The last time we got together, I tried to show how difficult making the final cuts can be. Coaches look at talent, behavior, attitude, injuries, finances and potential to make the difficult cuts. We used a defensive depth chart as a model, and looked at some of the decisions to be made.
Now let's take up. By looking at a potential depth for the Broncos in '08, we see just how hard the process gets. Remember that we took 25 guys on defense (my arbitrary number), 3 for STs (a K, P, and LS), and are now left with 25 spots for the offense.
I included all of our rookies, one UFA that I think stands a fair chance of making the team, and a host of players from last year and FA. I tried to include names that I felt had a reasonable chance to make the team (and I know there are sharp minds out there that might see a UFA or two that I missed that might differ with me).
Take a look at the chart below (which has 31 names on it) and tell us wh | | By: Mile High Report

| Jacksonville Jaguars Release 5: The Roster get's a little more clear! (UPDATED) | | 2008-06-16 12:31:42 | |
[Note by River City Rage, 06/16/08 3:20 PM EDT ] I was shortsighted in this piece and forgot the most obvious effect of the releases. The Jaguars now have 75 players under contract and 5 unsigned draft picks. The team released these five players to make room for the draft picks that should begin signing over the next few weeks. You can only have 80 players under contract, so rather than sign and cut as each contract is finalized, the Jaguars are cutting ties now and (hopefully) giving them a shot to end up somewhere else.
The Jacksonville Jaguars had to reduce their roster by five to get to the league mandated 80 players under contract. None of the cuts are terribly surprising, but they do clear up the overall roster picture a bit.
The cuts were:

Few things are harder for a coach than coming up with the final roster. On an emotional level, it's hard to cut a player who has worked his butt off. On a strategic level, it's not always cut and dried who the better player is.
Player one may be a better player than player two, but player one (depending on if he's pro, college, or HS) may have an injury potential, or may have academic issues, or may have a contract issue (costs too much), or may have potential behavioral problems, or may be a drag in the locker room or during practice. Maybe player two isn't as skilled, but he's more versatile because he can play two positions, or is a special teams ace, or maybe he brings leadership or team building qualities that raise the play of those around him. Maybe a player has value as an "every down" player, but another player is an amazingly elite player - but only on limited downs.

For nearly three weeks now, we have spent much of our time breaking down the Buffalo Bills' current personnel in our "State of the Roster" series. We, the Buffalo Rumblings community, have had some very intricate discussions about nearly every current Bill on the roster; I hope you've found the discussions as helpful in analyzing the roster changes post off-season as I have. Rest assured that we'll have content daily right up to training camp, but for now, here's a recap of each article involved in our State of the Roster II series:
Quarterback: No more Edwards vs. Losman... right?Running Back: Written well before Lynch's run-in with the law.Tight End/Fullback: No more H-Back, but still not a well-defined split.Wide Receiver: Hardy must produce if aerial attack is to blossom.Offensive Tackle: Depth may be a concern, especially if Peters holds out.Offensive Guard/Center: Is Fowler the weak link of the starting O-Line?

Prior to the 2008 NFL Draft - in fact, prior to the free agent signing period of this past March - we took a look at the Buffalo Bills' roster position by position, breaking down then-current personnel, finding holes, and building our community needs list.
Now that free agency and the Draft have been completed, and the Bills have infused their roster with new talent, it's time to repeat our process. Where has Buffalo gotten better? Where have they gotten worse? How will additions impact which Bills veterans remain on the roster? These are questions that we've been attempting to answer for the past week or so, and will continue to do so.

Remember a couple of days ago when we all pondered who would be cut to make room for the 4 remaining unsigned draft picks? Well the Dolphins have cleared one of the needed roster spots, at least according to the Palm Beach Post. They are reporting that undrafted free agent Kory Robertson will be placed on injured reserve, ending his rookie season before it even starts.
The injury is unknown at this point, but Robertson was thought to be in a position to earn a spot on the 53 man roster because of his size (6'4, 345). Now, though, this might actually benefit Paul Soliai, as he has one less body to compete with as a backup nose tackle. This move might also mean that one of the unsigned rookies could be signed in the near future.
We shall find out soon enough.

| | 2008 Jacksonville Jaguars Roster Breakdown: The Wide Receivers | | 2008-05-20 05:00:02 | |
In recent years the Jacksonville Jaguars have faced a "yeah, but" problem with their offense. The solid running game, the productive line play, even with the quarterback problems, the sore thumb of the Jaguars offense is the Wide Receiving Corps. Despite having two first round draft picks in Reggie Williams and Matt Jones, the Jaguars have not yet found the heir apparant to Jimmy Smith, and even throughout the outstanding 2007 season lacked the receiver that guaranteed a double team and that would strike fear into defensive game planning.
While the Jaguars went through an offensive explosion last season, there are still question marks surrounding the receivers. Will Reggie Williams repeat his 10 touchdown and 600 yards or was those merely outliers? Will Matt Jones wake up or stay in Jack Del Rio's doghouse?

| | 2008 Jacksonville Jaguars: Historical Roster Breakdown | | 2008-05-12 11:00:55 | |
The Jacksonville Jaguars offseason training activities start this week and with that begins the battle for positioning toward the final roster. The NFL only allows 53 players on the final roster and an eight man practice squad. I thought it might be interesting as be begin our position by position breakdown to look back at how many players we carry on our roster for each role.
Teams are required to have their roster at specific levels through training camp. Because NFL Europa ceases to exist, teams have a hard cap of eighty players under contract. On August 26th, the roster must be cut down to 75 players. The final cut date is August 30th where the roster may only have 53 players.
Tracking roster sizes for each position is actually fairly complicated. Players that are multi-functional, particularly on the offensive line, can throw off a count. | | A (Very Early) Look at Buffalo's 2008 Roster | | 2008-05-12 08:58:57
What's more fun on a Monday morning in May - from a football perspective, at least - than attempting to predict which 53 players from your favorite team will be lining up in front of your eyes this coming fall? That's exactly what we'll do this morning. With position-by-position breakdowns of the Buffalo Bills' 2008 roster just around the corner, I thought it would be prudent to take a look at the overall picture first, then break it down in the coming days.
So this is how I see the 2008 roster shaking out. Keep in mind that in the grand scheme of things, this exercise means very little; it is a topic that should, at the very least, bring about some interesting philosophical discussions, however.
Here's the positional breakdown. We'll avoid doing this depth chart style for now since, ultimately, I was playing a numbers game here. (It's not hard to figure out the depth chart, however.) Feel free to offer your own alternatives, pick apart my ideas, | | By: Buffalo Rumblings
| | Roster Turnover: Who's next to go? | | 2008-05-08 23:15:05 | |
As it stands right now, the Dolphins currently have 83 players on their roster. The limit to enter training camp in July is 80. I would expect the next round of cuts to come following the next mini-camp, which is a voluntary mini-camp scheduled for May 23 and lasting through the 25.
But who might be next to go? And I'm not talking about the undrafted free agents here. To my count, there are 15 undrafted free agents currently under contract by the Dolphins. Those 15 I'm excluding from this talk because they are, after all, undrafted players. So their expectations are far lower.
And here's another interesting stat to just ponder. Of the 83 players currently under contract by the Dolphins, 45 of them were signed, drafted, or traded by this new regime during this off-season. That means that 54% of the roster right now was brought in by Bill Parcells and company. If you take away the 15 undrafted free agents, you're then talking about | | By: The Phinsider

Stroud will be counted on as leader in '08 (Photo Source)
Leadership may be a bit of a cliche when it comes to discussing NFL rosters, but the fact of the matter is that good NFL teams have good leaders. Whether that leadership comes in the form of coaching, star quarterbacks or even punters, NFL rosters these days are so full of young players that it takes a certain type of leadership structure to get the most out of that inexperienced talent. Just look at how the leadership of the 2007 New York Giants milked outstanding play out of several rookies en route to their Super Bowl championship.
With one of the youngest rosters in the league, where does Buffalo's leadership come from? That's the question we'll attempt to answer this morning. Due to the youth of the roster, especially at key positions, Buffalo's roster leadership structure is slightly different than those of teams like the Patriots and Colts, who have natural leaders at the quarterback position.& | | By: Buffalo Rumblings

| | | Roster Breakdown - a final look before the draft | | 2008-04-22 14:50:20 | |
Here's one last look at the state of the roster before the draft. Denver has 9 draft picks and will probably add 3 or 4 free agents during or right after the draft. So I am guessing three or four guys will get cut before the draft to make room on the roster, although I guess they could wait and see if they make any trades during the draft that open up a roster spot(s). Denver will have to cut another set of players in July when they sign the rookie draftees.
Based solely on roster numbers, Denver needs to add a kicker and a
punter/kicker. They need to add at least 2 DT, 1 OT and one other OL. Based on talent and contract situations, I will guess that Denver
adds a DB and at least one more DL, possibly two. They will also add
some type of offensive skill position player (RB/WR), possibly 2 as well as
possibly another offensive lineman. That makes for 6 "definite" and 3 "likely" additions and 3 "possiblities" for a total of 12. This matches up prett | | By: Mile High Report

But this time of the year is more than about building a winning team - it's about putting together a roster with proper numbers that will allow a team to best put together a 53-man roster come September. How influential is the "training camp roster" (size: 80) on the draft-day process? Clearly it's not close to being the biggest factor considered when a selection is made, but where the Bills are lacking severely in numbers - and they have positions in that precise situation - could dictate how many players the Bills choose at each position. So where are the Bills lacking in numbers? There are four positions that need at least three more players just to | | By: Buffalo Rumblings

According to a report in the Chicago Tribune, Carmen Pignatiello will be the lone southpaw in the Cubs bullpen when the season starts on Monday. Scott Eyre is expected to return by the second week in April, but for now Pignatiello will get his shot.
The Cubs optioned Sean Marshall to Triple-A, along with Matt Murton. The report in the Tribune indicated Jim Hendry tried to find a suitable deal for the fan favorite. The Opening Day roster for the 2008 Chicago Cubs is....

Ronny Cedeno, as we already knew, made the team while Alex Cintron was cut. The other position player to come north was between Fontenot and Murton. The Cubs rightfully decided they didn’t need 6 outfielders so Murton will either be optioned to AAA or traded, probably traded.
Only one spot left open—LOOGY, which will go to Sean Marshall barring a collapse on his part in his next 2 relief outings.

| | Roster taking shape | | 2008-03-15 23:28:00 | | A few spots this spring have been up for grabs. I’ve tried to cover most of them on a daily basis. It’s the middle of spring training now and Lou has already said a few things that we didn’t know when camp began.
Felix Pie will be the starting centerfielder assuming he’s healthy after having surgery on his nuts. Pie was supposedly in a battle for CF with Sam Fuld. I’ve believed all along it was nothing more than an attempt to keep Pie motivated, but the mere fact that it was possible Fuld could start in CF was somewhat frightening.
Dempster, Marquis, Lieber and Marshall have been battling for 2 rotation spots. Lou revealed yesterday, following Dempster’s ugly start, that the final spot was the 5th spot and was between Lieber and Marquis. This means Dempster has been given the 3rd spot in the rotation despite pitching worse than any of the four candidates for the job and I thought we had some kind of competition going on | | By: Another Cubs Blog

The biggest surprise from Day 5 of Camp Lou was the Cubs signing Alex Cintron to a minor league deal. Rumors began to circulate the signing of Cintron was a precursor to a bigger deal involving a certain middle infielder but Jim Hendry shot down all of the speculation. According to a report in the Tribune, with Ronny Cedeno splitting time between the infield and outfield this spring, Hendry felt they needed more depth in the infield.
In other news, Kosuke Fukudome continues to make headlines in the mainstream media. Phil Rogers continues to doubt the decision the Cubs made to let Mark Prior walk but likes what he has seen from Fukudome. And just a few days after Kerry Wood was mentioned as the favorite to land the closer's job, Lou Piniella said Bobby Howry currently is the front-runner to be his closer.

Denver claimed linebacker Brandon Archer off waivers from Indianapolis and signed free-agent linebacker William Kershaw. The club also waived wide receiver Carlton Brewster and placed tackle Matt Lepsis on its reserve/retired list. Archer (6-foot-0, 239 pounds) is a second-year linebacker who enters his first season with the Broncos after totaling 10 defensive tackles (8 solo) and four special-teams stops in six regular-season games as a rookie with the Colts in 2007. He entered the NFL with Indianapolis on May 7 as a college free agent from Kansas State University and had stints on the Vikings and Colts' practice squads before he was signed to Indianapolis' active roster late in the year. At Kansas State, Archer was a first-team All-Big 12 Conference selection (Associated Press) as a senior and finished his career with 268 tackles in 50 games (34 starts). | | State of the Roster: Defensive End | | 2008-02-12 16:45:14 | | Can Reggie return to form? With the Defensive Tackles out of the way logically the next area to examine are the Defensive Ends. Clearly this is a far bigger task than addressing our tackles, simply because there were just so many problems with our play on the ends. The role of the pass rushing defensive end, while always important, will reach astronomical levels as the league seeks to emulate what Tom Coughlin and Tony Spagnulolo accomplished with the Giants. I can just see Jared Allen watching the Super Bowl and salivating at the thought of what that game did for his market value. Julius Peppers, a year away from Free Agency, will probably re-double his efforts to have a crazy contract year so that he can cash in. My point is that the price of premium pass rushers, while already high, just rose exponentially. | | The roster purging begins | | 2008-02-11 23:02:19 | | In case you missed it, the Dolphins cut nine players on Monday. So what might this early offseason roster purging mean? My first thought was actually how these cuts really highlight the failures of past regimes in Miami, and it's pretty damn frustrating. We got some wasted draft picks in Anthony Alabi and Joe Toledo. We got another lost draft pick, and wasted money, on Trent Green (though we'll get into his potential return in a second). And speaking of wasted money, there's LJ Shelton, who was a rather big disappointment (though he wasn't terrible). And then we got a terrible trade in the Adewale Ogunleye/Marty Booker deal. Yeah, pretty damn frustrating for us Dolphin fans, isn't it? The good news is this regime doesn't seem like they plan on suffering from the mistakes of past regimes, which could very well mean almost everyone on the roster should be on notice. Moving on, we need to quickly talk quarterback; and more specifically, Trent Green. &nb | | By: The Phinsider
| | State of the Roster: Jaguars Defensive Tackles | | 2008-02-10 22:12:53 | | Defensive Tackles: Can they return to form? What is the biggest lesson from the recent Super Bowl? Defenses win championships, and old football cliches will never go out of style. With that, it's time we (finally) start to break down the Jaguars roster and see what changes must be made in order to take the next step and be a Super Bowl contender in 2008. The Jaguars defense suffered in 2007, starting with the slow recovery of Defensive Tackle Marcus Stroud and Defensive End Reggie Hayward and ending with a slew of players on Injured Reserve or simply out of commission (Mike Peterson). According to the fine folks at Football Outsiders, the 2006 Jaguars defense was 3rd overall by their DVOA system, somehow the 2007 Jaguars only fell to 12th despite the injuries and some terrible performances by normally solid players. The normally solid run stopping Jaguars were 12th in yards allowed, 15th in passing yards allowed, 11th in rushing y | | By: Big Cat Country - An Unoffical Jacksonville Jaguar | | |
| | State of the Roster: Bills Middle Linebackers | | 2008-01-18 07:38:41 | | Poz returns full throttle in '08 (BuffaloBills.com) Offense has been the main focus of the past couple of days regarding the Bills; we'll be talking much more about the offense next week, but today, we're going to shift our attention back to the defense. In continuing with our positional reviews, we're ultimately working toward building a needs list on both sides of the ball, with community consensus the (unlikely?) goal. That will help us as we break down all of the available players this off-season; it will also help yours truly as I prepare for the second annual SB Nation NFL Mock Draft this off-season. I digress. Here's a breakdown of Buffalo's inside linebacker situation (and in case you missed it, here's our discussions on the ends and tackles): Paul Posluszny None of Buffalo's 17 injuries was more detrimental than the season-ending loss of rookie Paul Posluszny after just the first 10 quarters of his NFL career. Posluszny is now forced to take the John McCargo route to year two of his career: he needs to become a bigger force in Buffalo's defense, all the while doing so without having much playing experience. In his two and a half games, Posluszny racked up 25 tackles; had he continued that pace for a healthy 16 games, he would have finished the season with 160 (34 more than team leader Angelo Crowell). He's got the skills for this defense and the backing of the fan base; he's also got a lot of pressure on his shoulders heading into '08. Will Improve in '08 if - he can prove he learned a lot while on the sidelines recuperating :: he can remain healthy for the full year :: he improves his aggressiveness, especially in pass coverage John DiGiorgio DiGiorgio (or "Digi", as he's fondly referred to) was one of the Bills' pleasant defensive surprises this season. | | Potential Roster Cuts | | 2008-01-14 23:09:09 | | What I wanted to do today was look at the current Dolphins roster and examine which players could potentially be cut this offseason in a roster purge by Bill Parcells, Jeff Ireland, and company. But first, one administrative note. I got my hands on the beta version of the new site that is expeted to roll out sometime in March (hopefully) and let me say this: wow! I think you'll all really like the new design and the new features. But now down to business. The idea with this post is to look see which players could potentially be purged by the Dolphins and what the cap cost would be of cutting these players. Below I've listed the players who, basically, aren't absolute locks to make the roster. And this includes potential trades where the Dolphins would still have to eat these players' cap costs. The format below is the players name, followed by their 2008 cap cost. In parenthesis is how much cutting or trading that player would cost the Dolphins in cap space due to various things like prorated bonuses and the like. Also, all figures are in terms of millions of dollars. And be advised that these numbers are very close to the actual figure but may indeed be slightly off. Regardless, it paints a fairly accurate picture. Offense Trent Green: $3.733 ($0.666) L.J. Shelton: $4.125 ($1.75) Anthony Alabi: $0.559 ($0.039) Joe Toledo: $0.445 ($0.218) Marty Booker: $5.3 (0) Derek Hagan: $0.622 ($0.354) David Martin: $1.23 ($0.8) Justin Peelle: $1.7 ($0.4) Defense Jason Taylor: $10.02 ($4.04) Vonnie Holliday: $4.35 ($4.65) Keith Traylor: $1.33 ($0.2) Zach Thomas: $7.987 ($2.337) Joey Porter: $7.4 ($9.6) Andre Goodman: $2.033 ($0.333) Travis Daniels: $0.635 ($0.115) Jason Allen: $1.905 ($3.68) Renaldo Hill: $2.567 ($0.667) Cameron Worrell: $1.255 ($0.143) So there's a simplified view of some of the decisions that lay ahead for this new regime. | | State of the Roster: Bills Running Backs | | 2008-01-11 18:57:47 | | Jackson leaped onto the scene in 2nd year (BuffaloBills.com) Remember las off-season? Willis McGahee had been traded, Anthony Thomas sat atop the depth chart, Bills fans were drooling over a potential trade for Chargers RB Michael Turner, and we knew without a fraction of a doubt that if we didn't address the position our season would be sunk? What a difference a year makes. Once a position of potentially crippling weakness, running back is now arguably the strongest position on the team. So let's talk about this bright spot. Here's the breakdown of Buffalo's running backs, and what the group should look like in 2008: Marshawn Lynch Only two NFL rookies had bigger statistical impacts in 2007 than did Lynch: Vikings RB Adrian Peterson and 49ers LB Patrick Willis. | | State of the Roster: Bills Guards/Centers | | 2008-01-11 07:36:52 | | Is Fowler the weak link on a solid line? (BuffaloBills.com) Yesterday, we discussed the stability of Buffalo's offensive tackle position, a unit headlined by Jason Peters and one of the Bills' deepest positions on the roster. The rest of the offensive line, however, is much more highly debated - so let's debate the Bills' interior linemen. We'll start with centers, and work to guards. Melvin Fowler Perhaps the most hotly debated player on Buffalo's line. Coaches like Fowler's technical approach to the game, and he's certainly been an upgrade over his predecessor, Trey Teague. However, his strengths do not match with the strengths of his linemates; namely, he's not a powerful run blocker (at 310 pounds, he is the Bills' lightest starter). Even so, Fowler is a good pass protector, and very mobile when pulling. Very good at getting to the second level. Many feel that a bigger center would bring more balance up the middle; however, it's unlikely t | | By: Buffalo Rumblings | | |
| | State of the Roster: Bills Offensive Tackles | | 2008-01-10 07:49:28 | | Peters becoming a dominant LT (BuffaloBills.com) Yes, folks, the Bills are still moving at a snail's pace as they work to fill vacancies in their front office and on their coaching staff. So slowly, in fact, that the team had not yet scheduled any interviews as of yesterday (according to Leo Roth's report linked above). So while we continue to wait for news on that front, let's spend the day talking about Buffalo's offensive line. To date, we've gone over Buffalo's passing game by analyzing in-depth the Bills' QB, WR and TE positions. Continuing this offensive approach, we'll begin linking the passing game to the rushing attack, obviously via the men that make it all happen. Once we get through the line (and the running backs), we'll take a look at the offense as a whole, identify needs, and prioritize an offensive wish list that we'll then combine with a defensive one at a later date. | | State of the Roster: Bills Tight Ends | | 2008-01-09 07:40:40 | | Gaines was a pleasant surprise in '07 (BuffaloBills.com) Yawn. Buffalo's searches for a new front office man, a new offensive coordinator and a new line coach are progressing at a snail's pace. Rather than bore y'all with speculation and conjecture, I figured we'd continue the series we started this week that has sparked some hot debate: our roster breakdowns. QB WR This is the third breakdown we'll undertake; as I've mentioned in the previous breakdowns, we'll have 13 such postings over the coming weeks as we methodically break down the current Bills roster for strengths and weaknesses, and build up a needs list heading into free agency and the draft. Simple, right? Probably not - but we'll give it the college try. | | | Bills Continue Roster Shuffling; Predictions and Rankings | | 2007-10-20 22:19:10 | | This has been a strange week for the Bills personnel-wise. From the looks of what the coaching staff has done with the roster over the past few days, it appears that the Bills are in serious "youth movement" mode. First, rookie Trent Edwards was named the team's starting quarterbacks (yeah, yeah, "this week", I know - we'll see how long that lasts). Now the team has rid itself of two more veterans, lost another player to injury and replaced them all with three players whose NFL experience is only a game or two more than mine. Craig Nall was released again, temporarily leaving the Bills with just two quarterbacks. His roster spot was filled, however, by Gibran Hamdan, a QB who had been stashed on the Bills practice squad for the last few weeks. It may seem like the team shed a veteran for a young guy, but it's not very true - Nall doesn't have much game experience at this level, and he was never going to see the field. Hamdan is a developmental guy, but he comes at a cheaper price with a bit less baggage. WR Peerless Price was (finally) placed on IR; he was replaced on the active roster by WR Justin Jenkins, a practice squad wideout who had a couple of strong pre-season showings earlier this fall. With just three healthy wideouts (Sam Aiken is still a bit hobbled), Jenkins has a good chance of suiting up for the Ravens game. Another practice squad player, TE Derek Schouman, was activated to the roster earlier today. His elevation leaves the Bills with a whopping five tight ends for the Ravens game; DT Tim Anderson was released to make room for Schouman on the roster. Anderson, who hasn't seen much playing time this year except for on special teams, appeared to have fallen to the #5 DT spot behind Jason Jefferson and was expendable. It is a bit surprising, however, that the team cut him for another tight end. This move has "Copeland Bryan" written all over it (Bryan was brought into Buffalo after Week 1 and hasn't dressed for a game since). Last week we started a little contest here, where each week Rumblings community members are encouraged to pick the week's NFL winners. We'll keep track of who's beating who, and whoever has the most correct picks at the end of the season will get... well, nothing but bragging rights. Maybe the title of "Guru"; we'll see. Picks are made without taking spread into consideration. Here's my Week 7 picks: TEN over HOU; DET over TB; NO over ATL; BUF over BAL; NYG over SF; WAS over ARI; NE over MIA; OAK over KC; CIN over NYJ; DAL over MIN; PHI over CHI; SEA over STL; PIT over DEN; IND over JAX. Feel free to leave your picks as well! With Week 7 NFL action set to begin tomorrow, let's take one last look at how the league stacks up currently by examining the SB Nation power rankings. After falling in at #27 last week, the Bills held steady at that position through their bye week. A win over Baltimore this weekend would do wonders in boosting that ranking, as the Ravens clock in at #8 overall. The full table can be reached by clicking "Read More". | | | Browns roster ramblings and some predictions | | 2007-09-04 11:40:00 | | Looking over the final roster, here are some random thoughts:Best units:1. Linebackers--Their youth could hurt at first, but they are fast with huge potential. Could develop into the one of the best LB corps in the league down the road.2. Tight ends--KWII appears healthy, Heiden is always dependable, Dinkins provides depth.Shakiest units:1. Defensive line--The starting nose tackle is a year older and the guy being groomed as his replacement is unproven and starting at left end due to injury. Free agency and the draft changed a lot of faces, but can any of them play? Run defense has to be a huge concern.2. Defensive backs--The talent is there if it is healthy, but that has been a big "if" the past two seasons. The Browns kept 10 DBs, 7 of them CBs for just this reason.3. Running backs--Jamal Lewis has looked good, but can he carry the load all season, and if he gets hurt, can either of the remaining guys be a starter week in and week out?4. Wide receivers--Braylon Edwards is talented, but inconsistent. Joe Jurecvicious is dependable, but not a star. Beyond those two, no one has stepped up. Someone needs to.Most improved unit:1. Offensive line--A couple years ago the Browns restocked the line with a bunch of past-their prime free agents. This season they rebuilt it with young free agents and draft choices. Steinbach, Thomas, and McKinney are a huge boost, and if Bentley comes back this line could be great.Players that worry me the most:1. Ted Washington--he struggled at times last season, with one front office exec saying "He's already retired, he just doesn't know it." His experience and tremendous size earn him the starting spot, but the skills just aren't there any more.2. Phil Dawson--he struggled the last half of last season, missing 5 of his last 9, and also missed a couple of field goals during the preseason. | | | Time to do the shuffle -- roster changes begin | | 2007-08-16 13:48:41 | | This week's Cheerleader Photo of the Week is of several members of the Baltimore Ravens cheerleading squad. The squad reportedly also has male participants, and does stunts. But, ummm, does anybody really care about that? The Giants began shuffling their roster Wednesday, and I'd say some of the moves might be bad news for struggling backups on the offensive and defensive lines. One move was made by necessity, and that was putting backup tight end Darcy Johnson on injured reserve. The most interesting new player in camp is defensive tackle Manuel Wright. A 6-foot-6, 329-pounder, Wright did not play last season while battling depression. At that size, the Giants are likely hoping he can be a run-stuffer. If he shows he can do that, it might be bad news for Marcus Bell, Jonas Seawright or -- please, please, please -- William Joseph. On offense, the Giants waived lineman Chris Patrick, who they signed as a free agent after he went undrafted in t | | By: Big Blue View | | |
| | Roster Moves a Plenty - Roster Remains In Flux | | 2007-07-29 17:37:34 | | The Denver Broncos on Sunday signed LB Wesly Mallard and DE Kenny Peterson, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. As per club policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed. The club also placed DE Carlos Hall on its reserve/did not report list and waived LB Eddie Moore after he failed his physical. Moore will revert to the Broncos' injured reserve list should he clear waivers. Mallard (6-foot-1, 230 pounds) is in his sixth NFL season and joins the Broncos after playing for Tampa Bay (2005-06), New England (2005) and the New York Giants (2002-04). He was selected by the Giants in the sixth round (188th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft from the University of Oregon. The 28-year-old has played 59 career regular-season games (0 starts), totaling four tackles (3 solo) and one fumble recovery. He also has recorded 46 career stops on special teams. In 2006, Mallard played all 16 games for Tampa Bay and registered 12 special-teams tackles and one fumble recovery. He joined the Buccaneers as a | | By: Mile High Report | | |
| | Roster Heating Up As Training Camp Nears | | 2007-07-24 17:34:45 | | Training Camp is less than a week away. How good does it sound to write/read that? That means the questions surrounding the roster are beginning to heat up and the Broncos are sure to address several of these issues over the next few days. The Denver Post discusses some of these questions as well. Here are some of my thoughts, which means I am inviting yours -- Draft Picks -- The Broncos have signed only one of their four draft picks, 4th rounder Marcus Thomas, and considering the baggage Thomas came into the League with it could only benefit Thomas to sign as quickly as possible. If past history is any indication, the Broncos should have no problem getting deals done with Jarvis Moss, Tim Crowder and Ryan Harris. Tatum Bell was the last Broncos draft pick to hold out and the team has a solid history of getting the deals done in the nick of time. The Broncos should have a bit of a framework when it comes to Moss since the Steelers agreed to te | | By: Mile High Report | | |
