    Weekend Roundup: Same Old Problems
    2008-08-03 23:15:06
Believe it or not, football is back.  Sunday night saw the first preseason game of 2008 take place, with the Redskins defeating Indianapolis 30-16.  And in less than a week, our Dolphins will host the Buccaneers at Dolphin Stadium. MEET THE NEW FINS; SAME AS THE OLD FINSOn Saturday, the Dolphins took part in a scrimmage inside the "Nick Saban Memorial" bubble down in Davie.  And all reports indicate something that Dolphin fans are all too familiar with. First of all, this team still has issues at quarterback.  We are a week into camp, and no quarterback has set himself up as the leader to start in week one.  If anything, the situation has actually gotten even murkier as Chad Henne could very well play himself into the starter's role.  Is it the best thing for him or for the team to have a rookie start from day one?  That's debatable and is something we'll touch on if it happens.  But what we do know right now is that none of the QBs are playing p

    Weekend Roundup (a day late)

Well I'm back from my day and a half (or so) off due to a wedding I attended on Sunday night.  A huge "thank you" goes out to all of you who kept this place rocking in my absence.  I'm sure all the readers and community members appreciate it.  I know I do! Below are just a few things from this past weekend that I wanted to quickly highlight.  Then, beginning tomorrow, I'll be back to my usual posting tendencies (as time allows, of course): RONNIE SAYS COMEBACK MORE MENTAL THAN PHYSICALRonnie Brown, who is participating fully in practice to open up camp (even taking part in two-a-days), says that the hardest part of his comeback is mental - not physical: "I think part of it is mental. I feel myself gathering when I make a certain cut or make a certain movement. I'm trying to get over the mental part of it, get everything flowing and react out of instinct instead of trying to think [about the injury]." This was to be expected.  The physical recovery is only hal

    The Literary Roundup
    2008-06-17 21:54:59
This summer has been a summer of reading for me. While I haven;t had that much free time lately I've still managed to pack my days with pages and pages of reading. I'd say a good 80-90% of my waking thoughts are turned towards literature. So, I thought it'd be interesting to bring just a few of the little, entertaining, and weird bits of writing or literature related things that I've been playing around with online.Thou caluminous rampallian flap-dragon! Thou puking guts-griping blind-worm! This is a really simple but fun page to play with. I found it completely on purpose (unlike most everything els) because I there are some situations where only the harsh and scornful words of the bard will do. I'm sure you've all been there. Its always seemed very important to me that when insulting someone to be smart about it. It isn't all that fun or impressive to just hurt someone's feelings because belittling someone else doesn't do anything to raise yourself up. Insulting a person is r

    Weekend Roundup: Mini-Camp Thoughts
    2008-06-08 23:15:02
Well the final mini-camp has come and gone.  The Dolphins now have a couple of OTA practices left this week and then they hit the road for some vacation before training camp opens in July.  So for today's "Weekend Roundup," I figured I could just talk a little bit about what the media reported from these 5 mini-camp practices. QB TALKHere's all I'll say about the quarterbacks: It's impossible to really know who had a good day and who had a bad one.  These camp reports are very subjective - meaning there's no real way to compare the performances of the 3 quarterbacks.  Opinions and bias can easily influence writers to report that "quarterback X" had a good day while "quarterback Y" struggled.  For example, it might be reported that John Beck threw a great pass to Davone Bess.  Considering Bess's place on the depth chart, the reporter might say that John was working with the 3rd team.  But that doesn't necessarily mean John was working against the 3r

Incentive Roundup: Chrysler adds more cash to free gas, Ford mum on Employee Pricing
    2008-06-06 16:54:00
Times are tough in Detroit these days as each of the Big 3 saw drastic drops in sales for the month of May. It's not surprising, then, to see that Chrysler, Dodge and Ford have increased incentives in an effort to get those cars off its dealer's lots. For instance, prospective buyers for the Hemi-powered Chrysler 300C can now choose either $4,000 cash back or $2,000 plus Chrysler's $2.99 gas promotion, known as Let's Refuel America. Choosing Chrysler's full-size SUV, the Aspen, will net you $4,500 cash back or $1,000 in cash, plus the Let's Refuel deal. Dodge too is heavy into the incentives game, especially on fuel-gulping SUV's and trucks. The largest savings come with the 2008 Ram truck, which gets you $5,000 in cash or $3,000 plus the cheap gas card.Realizing the sorry state that sales of the F-Series are in, Ford has chosen to offer employee pricing for its full-sizers, although they aren't telling you what how much you'll save without a trip to the dealer. Cars.com has been able

Yves Saint Laurent's ashes to be buried in MarrakechYves Saint Laurent, one of the legendary names of the world of fashion, died Sunday evening in Paris at the age of 71. His connections with Morocco were so strong that his ashes will be kept in a tomb in the Majorelle botanical gardens, a property he acquired in Marrakech in the 1980’s.Yves Saint Laurent first visited Marrakech in 1967 and several years later he and his businessman friend, Pierre Bergé, bought the house of gardens which once belonged to the painter Jacques Majorelle . In March 2000, they decided to restore the garden and four years later started an association to save protect and beautify the Majorelle gardens “"l’Association pour la sauvegarde et le rayonnement du jardin Majorelle". Yves Saint Laurent’s last visit to Marrakech was in November 2006 when he spent his summer vacations in Tanger situated in the north of Morocco, where he owned another property. 500k-year-old human fossil disco

Weekend Roundup: All Jason, All the Time
    2008-06-01 23:15:01
I hope you all had a great weekend. Unfortunately, the weekend headlines were yet again dominated by non other than Jason Taylor.  As you all know, Taylor held a press conference in South Florida on Sunday.  And what was reportedly supposed to be Taylor's time to come clean and openly demand a trade turned into just another twist in the saga that is Jason Taylor's future plans. So let's start with some quotes from the Jason, which include the revelation that 2008 is likely Taylor's last season before he retires from the game of football: “I’m disappointed when you’re away and people are having a chance to take shots at you for certain things and you don’t have a chance to really set the record straight." “Do I want to be traded? I want to win in ‘08, and that’s what I want to do. I told the Dolphins from Day One that was my intentions. My intentions right now are to play one more year. Weekend Roundup: Mini-camp highlights

Incase you've been living under a rock for the past 48 hours, you know that the main story of this weekend for the Dolphins was their rookie mini-camp, the first one of 2008.  And with it's conclusion on Sunday, there's really only one thing that Dolphin fans (and football fans in general) are thinking:  Football season can't get here soon enough.  All this weekend's mini-camp really did was wet my appetite for, of course, more football.  But we'll have to wait a little bit for that. Here are some of the storylines that came out of this weekend's mini-camp: A NEW ERA HAS BEGUNFor Tony Sparano, this weekend really marked the beginning of what will hopefully be a successful head coaching career.  And he was just as excited as anyone to get on the practice field for the first time.  On Friday, Sparano shared with the media: "It was great. I was excited; didn’t sleep much last night. All of the administrative stuff for me, from that standpoint, was p

    Jason Taylor Roundup
    2008-04-24 06:30:06
This will likely be the story that you'll be hearing about most between now and Saturday's draft.  Despite Bill Parcells coming out and saying earlier this offseason that the only way Jason Taylor isn't a Dolphin in 2008 is if he retires, rumors continue to swirl regarding Jason's future in Miami.  And now with the Jared Allen deal between the Vikings and Chiefs completed, many believe that Taylor is the next big name pass rusher who will be wearing a new uniform in 2008. A lot of these rumors stem from a report in the Sun-Sentinel that says the Dolphins are indeed shopping Taylor, according to two NFL executives: A day after signing Michigan's Jake Long, the Dolphins have turned their attention to acquiring another first-round pick, according to two NFL executives. And it appears they are shopping star defensive end Jason Taylor to do it. The goal is to corral another player at the top of their draft board, one the organization fears might not be around when they select

Weekend Roundup: The Jason Taylor saga & #1 pick talk
    2008-04-21 00:16:50
Well here were are at the beginning of what it sure to be an exciting and entertaining final week before Saturday's NFL Draft.  So here's what you may have missed this weekend while you were trying to tie up all the loose ends so you can spend next weekend watching the draft: JASON TAYLOR SAGA CONTINUES As W NY Fins Fan pointed out in this diary Yahoo's Jason Cole posted this article on Friday about Jason Taylor and his desire to leave Miami.  Cole writes: Taylor remains a Dolphin, but that's not what he wants. Publicly, Taylor is putting a big smile on everything and saying all the right things. However, he has told the team that he'd like to take Huizenga up on the owner's offer, according to multiple sources close to the player. The Dolphins declined comment on the situation Friday, but if they refuse to accommodate Taylor's request prior to the beginning of the NFL draft on April 26, Miami could be looking at a repeat of NFL history come July. Weekend Roundup: Shockey, draft talk
    2008-04-14 00:06:48
Hope everyone had a good weekend.  Here's what you may have missed while you were busy doing whatever it was you were doing: SHOCKEY TO MIAMI? Some people actually threw this idea around as far back as February.  But now, it seems the idea of Jeremy Shockey coming to the Dolphins isn't as far-fetched as once thought.  Below is an excerpt from FOX Sports: Like a persistent cough, or a recurring dream, the reports of tight end Jeremy Shockey being traded from the Giants just refuse to cease and desist. The latest report has him shuffling off to Miami to come face to face with Bill Parcells, the guy he called a "homo" three years ago. In exchange for this multi-talented headache with two (bad) legs, the Dolphins are said to be contemplating parting with their second-round draft pick. ...Plausible? Perhaps, but not yet all that believable. The report says the trade can be made as late as draft day. The short little blurb also does go on to explain they are referring to the

    Weekend Roundup
    2008-02-10 23:01:51
Hope everyone had a great weekend.  Here's some of what you might have missed hile you were out and about: CULTURE CHANGE COMING Besides the many changes we are likely to see on the field for the Dolphins, Tim Graham wrote a brief article about the culture change that players should expect off the field as well.  It's very well known how relaxed the locker room was last year despite all the losses (with domino games and card games and such).  Don't look for that same "laid-back" feel from this new regime: I recently finished Mike Shropshire's entertaining book When the Tuna Went Down to Texas, about Bill Parcells' first season as coach of the Cowboys. In it, Shropshire makes mention of the "slap-happy coaching regime of Barry Switzer," when the locker room featured a ping-pong table and heated domino competitions. "Those domino games often seemed more bitterly contested than the football games on Sunday," Shropshire wrote. With Parcells running the show? "For all the pla
