A Vintage Beckett At Exactly The Right Time...Boston Red Sox 8 KC Royals 2
    2008-08-06 04:36:00
Josh Beckett returned to his 2007 form as he beat the KC Royals 8-2 He was lifted by Tito Francona with two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning after throwing 90 pitches. He allowed those 2 runs on just 4 base hits and 2 walks while striking out a healthy 7 Royals batters. Royals DH Jose Guillen this to say about him..."He looked great," Jose Guillen said of Beckett. "His ball moved all over the place. Inside and out. He looked like the playoff Beckett."Peter here, and his pitches WERE darting and dancing in and out and up and down all night, which was a great thing to see. If he can hold onto this type of stuff for the remainder of this season and into and through the postseason, Boston's chances of making it to that postseason would be greatly enhanced. With Becks and Lester leading the staff, the Red Sox should do quite well, especially scoring 8 runs as they did last night. But last night, three runs would have been enough. Hey, 8 is just fine with me, thank you very much. Timlin ...

    2008-08-05 04:40:00
Monday night in Kansas City, the Boston Red Sox were beaten by the Kansas City Royals, continuing a seemingly unending string of road calamities. Clay Buchholz was undone by the end of the third inning. After giving up a first inning home run to Alex Gordon, he then gave up three more runs in the third on three singles, two walks and a hit batter. That was all the scoring for the Royals, but it was enough to down the visiters. Sox manager Tito Francona had this to say after the game concluded..."He was pitching with such confidence, his body language, he was working quicker, he was coming off the mound with some aggression," manager Terry Francona said of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. "But we got into that bind in that one inning. There were a lot of baserunners, and he was trying to be perfect. Just need to limit the damage. He's growing. We talked about when he came back that it's still a work in progress, and we acknowledged that. But I do like the way he went back out and h...

    Seventh Heaven...Red Sox 11 Royals 8
    2008-05-23 04:33:00
Well, it wasn't pretty - not by a long shot, but the Boston Red Sox won their seventh straight game Thursday at Fenway Park by defeating the Kansas City Royals 11-8. It was their last Fenway game for the rest of the month of May. The team winged west to Oakland, California yesterday evening. What wasn't pretty about the contest? I'll start with Daisuke Matsuzaka, who improved his spotless record to 8-0. But he was clearly off his game, just as he was in his last start. He pitched five and two thirds innings, allowing three runs on six hits. But his problem yet again was with his control. He walked six KC hitters and threw 118 pitches in his too short outing. Oh, how nice it would be to get seven great innings from him, with one or two walks. But it wasn't to be Thursday. Too many times he nibbled, trying to nudge the outside black of the plate with a sweeping breaking ball. He continually could not hit that target, and at times he seemed literally off balance as he released the ball to...

    ***JON LESTER NO-HITS ROYALS 7-0***
    2008-05-20 05:01:00
130 pitches, 9 strikouts, 2 walks, 11 groundouts, 7 flyouts and only 29 batters faced. Oh, and ZERO HITS allowed! Jon Lester made history Monday night at Fenway Park by pitching his first complete game and first no-hitter. The Red Sox beat the visiting KC Royals 7-0. The fans were loud, and by loud I mean LOUD, and after the ninth inning ended with a strikeout, Lester raised his arms in triumph as first Varitek and then the rest of his team mobbed him. It's only been two years since Lester's grim cancer diagnosis, and boy, has he come a long way. Terry Francona had tears in his eyes as he spoke about his releationship with the young pitcher and his performance on the mound. Here's what he had to say..."I looked up in the ninth and you're trying to keep your emotions in check," manager Terry Francona said, "and I went to say something to John Farrell and he was being a big baby next to me. It made me feel a little bit better. This probably isn't fair to say, but I feel like my son gradu...

Marlins Top Royals, Snap Losing Skid
    2008-05-17 22:05:00
The Marlins finally picked up another win after an embarrassing sweep at the hands of the lowly Cincinnati Reds and a loss to the Royals yesterday. The 7-3 victory was much needed, because the once solid bullpen has been leaky of late and was not able to make up for the starter's lack of production. The victory gives the Marlins sole possession of the division lead again, less than a week after they owned the best record in baseball. Tomorrow's rubber match is one we have to win, because the Royals are about as bad a team as the Marlins will get to play this season. They should have looked at this Cinci/KC 6 game stretch and thought about coming out of this 4-2 or 5-1. Instead at best the Marlins will take 2 from a pair of last-place caliber teams. It'll be a tough matchup though, as the Marlins will face KC's best pitcher so far this season in Zach Greinke. Zach is 4-1 with an impressive 1.93 ERA and has been great for the Royals. Burke Badenhop will need to have his best stuff out ther...

    Luncheon with the Royals.
    2008-05-01 15:21:00
May 2 ... Russian salad is the puzzle of the day today. It did not start out as a puzzle, it started out as one of the dishes served to the King and Queen, and the Duke and Duckess of York on this day in 1924 – and I thought it was about time I gave you another historic menu. The royals were making an ‘informal inspection’ of the palaces at the British Empire Exhibition being held at Wembley – the Palaces of Industry, Engineering etc that is. After four hours of touring the exhibits ‘almost as precisely as ordinary visitors do’, they were allowed a luncheon break before continuing their inspection. This was the luncheon menu: Les Canapes souveraine.--Les petites soles Colbert.--Les côtes d’agneau double grillées.Les petits pois frais à l’Anglais.Les pommes nouvelles vapeur.--Les canetons à la gelée d’orange.Jambon en cornet.La salade à la Russe.--Les asperges froide vinaigrette--Les fraises Romanoff. Royals @ Cubs
    2008-03-18 18:39:00
Game is on CSN Chicago.  Also on MLB.tv.  Gameday Dempster and Marquis will pitch today.  Does Dempster have an automatic lock on a spot in the rotation even if he has another shitty outing?  Probably.  You don’t go 100 years without a championship by making sound baseball decisions.  Lineups to come later...

JAY MARIOTTI CAN (AND DOES) SUCK IT: Royals at Cubs 3:05 CT
    2008-03-18 12:54:00
Go get 'em, Kerry I love Kerry Wood. At first, I loved him because he could strike out 20 Astros in one game. Then I loved him because, no matter how much pain he was in, or much much he stunk it up out there, he kept trying to come back. He might have been sobbing on the inside, but, on the outside, he always had that same cool, collected, Texas swagger thad seemed to say "If I want to, I can still deliver a 100 mph fastball to your head." Then I loved him because he felt he owed us all something. He wanted to be the Kerry we all wanted him to be. And we wanted it for him. And now I love him because he's on the verge of being THAT Kerry. The one that widens the eyes of the guy in the on-deck circle when Kerry and his 99 mph fastball strides onto the mound in the bottom of the 8th. He's so close. All we need now is the official declaration of "closer" from Lou and a good entry song (too bad "Enter Sandman" is already taken). But, of couse, some flea always has to come along and ruin ...

Gabbard Falters, But Rangers Shine In 10-8 Victory Over Royals
    2008-03-15 01:42:39
Kason Gabbard’s candidacy for the fourth spot in the Texas Rangers’ Opening Day starting rotation may have taken yet another step backwards on Friday afternoon in Surprise, Arizona. Sidney Ponson’s, comparatively, may have taken yet another step forward. Texas managed to overcome yet another miserable performance from the 25-year-old Gabbard, who surrendered seven earned runs on seven [...]...

Cubs @ Royals in the middle of nowhere
    2008-03-09 17:43:00
Today’s game is on WGN.  Today’s pitcher below… Ryan Dempster Kerry Wood Neal Cotts Carmen Pignatiello Kevin Hart Carlos Marmol I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’d like to see Marmol face some actual MLB hitters instead of this 9th inning stuff.  Not sure what to make of that.  Howry and Wood are pitching the middle innings as most closers would, but Marmol is left hanging around until the 9th.  I’m guessing it means the closer’s spot is Kerry’s Wood to lose, but what do I know? Gameday.  Lineups to come. Oh yeah, apparently it was said on the radio this morning that the Cubs are close to acquiring Coco Crisp for Sam Fuld and Jason Marquis.  Take with a grain of salt....

Talkin' Cubs Live - Cubs vs. Royals - 03/09/08
    2008-03-09 14:00:00
Spring Training Game Twelve: Cubs (4-7) vs. Royals (5-5) Game Time - 3:05pm C.T. TV: WGN - Radio: 720 WGN, Gameday Audio on MLB.com Location - Surprise Stadium, Surprise Ryan Dempster (1-0, 3.60) vs. Brett Tomko (1-0, 6.75) Time to spring forward.... The Cubs will make the roughly one hour journey today from Mesa to Surprise to face a very talented, young Kansas City Royals team. Ryan Dempster is scheduled to make his third start of the spring. Dempster appears to be a lock to make the starting rotation, the only question remains is.... will he be slotted as the Cubs number three or number five starter? Dempster has allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in 5 innings in his first two starts with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. Kosuke Fukudome is not expected to play today and do not be surprised to see Piniella's lineup missing such names as Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez as well. ...

Cubs Fans, This Is Your Life: Cubs At Royals 3:05 CT
    2008-03-09 12:39:52
As spring blooms anew, the time has come for us as Cubs fans to take stock of our lives: to mourn the passing of those we loved and to appreciate the things that have been bestowed upon us by the universe. We begin by mourning those who have been taken from us. In his spring debut for San Diego, 41-year-old Greg Maddux needed only 18 pitches to work two innings. It helped, of course, that 16 of those pitches were strikes, not that Maddux was satisfied. "I was a little wild, obviously," he said. Oh Greg, may you find happiness and joy all the days of your life. And if that happiness comes in the form of you accepting a mid-season trade to your former team, that would be great. Because this is what they've replaced you with: Now I got a chance to go out there and give up a run and it's not going to be the game," Dempster said. "That's the truth. You can be a starter and give up three runs in the first and go six more innings and everybody talks about what a great job you did. If you...

Rangers Win in Critical Spring Opener 6-1 over Royals
    2008-02-27 17:04:33
The spring schedule is finally upon us. Today’s game might be the most important one so far, but that’s only because it’s the first. Despite the complete irrelevance of the game, I can’t help but feel like the winter is finally over. We’re still over a month away from numbers going up in the real [...]...

Texas Holds On For 9-8 Win Over Royals

Let me present to you the following game matchup: the Rangers and Royals playing in early September, two teams with a combined record this season of 126-150. Now, throw in a big heaping dose of on-and-off showers passing over the friendly confines of Rangers Ballpark in Arlington throughout the night. Oh yeah, and let the game [...]...

Royals Sweep Rangers In 10-0 Rout
    2007-07-30 06:37:31
As the bottom of the 7th inning came to a close on Sunday afternoon, with the Royals having just scored four more times to take a 10-0 lead, KRLD radio announcer Eric Nadel quipped that “this is shades of April and May all over again.” How right you are, Eric. Kameron Loe surrendered six runs in just 5.1 innings on Sunday, and Texas was blanked for the first time since July 7th, when Erik Bedard dominated the Rangers in Arlington with a complete game shutout. However, the pitcher starting for Kansas City on Sunday was not exactly Erik Bedard. 23-year-old right-hander Leo Nunez, who came into the game with just one career major league start under his belt, crushed the Rangers offense with six strong shutout innings. Texas managed only five hits on the day, with two of those coming from the bat of Gerald Laird. Reliever Joel Peralta picked up where Nunez left off and pitched three innings, earning him his second career save. On the other side of the coin was the Rangers pitch...

Royals Pound Texas 6-1; Teixeira, Otsuka Updates
    2007-07-28 08:29:03
Jamey Wright’s pitching line on Friday night against the Royals: 6.2 IP, 10 H, 5 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 1 HR If Wright had any trade value coming into his start on Friday night (a dicey proposition at best), it’s probably all but gone now. Yes, Jamey still has a respectable 4.57 ERA. He’s also the not-so-proud owner of a 1.72 WHIP, and opposing hitters have lit Wright up to the tune of a .293/.413/.469 batting line. Yes, that’s right, a .413 OBP. Ugh. In other news, Kansas City starter Brian Bannister made the Lofton-less Rangers look foolish, with Sammy Sosa’s garbage time home run in the top of the 8th inning providing the Rangers their only offense on the night. Texas lost, 6-1. Ron Washington said on Friday that Marlon Byrd would be the everyday center fielder for the rest of the season, with Nelson Cruz winning the right field job - for now. If Cruz hits like he did during his first stint with Texas this season (.551 OPS in 144 AB), the odds are pretty high t...

Series Preview: Marlins @ Royals (3 Games)
    2007-06-15 22:28:09
ROYALE WITH CHEESE SERIES The Marlins and Royals play the first of a three-game series in Kansas City. It marks just the second time the teams have ever met, as the Fish went 2-1 in KC from June 10-12, 2002. The Royals are one of five teams the Marlins have only faced in 3g: Mariners, Athletics, Twins, Royals, White Sox. THE MI-TRAIN Sergio Mitre enters today with a 1.59 ERA, second-best in the Majors among pitchers who have made 10+ starts. Dan Haren 1.58 ERA (17 ER/ 97.0 IP) Sergio Mitre 1.59 ERA (10 ER/ 56.2 IP) Jake Peavy 1.82 ERA (19 ER/ 94.0 IP) Pitching Matchups Friday: Sergio Mitre, RHP (2-2, 1.59) @ Gil Meche, RHP (3-6, 3.16) Saturday: Rick Vanden Hurk, RHP (1-2, 8.61) @ Jorge De La Rosa, LHP (4-6, 4.73) Sunday: Scott Olsen, LHP (5-5, 4.81) @ Brian Bannister, RHP (3-3, 2.91) As funny as this sounds the Fish are looking for some good road cookin. We have been unable to get on a real roll and string together 4-6 wins in a row to break that .500 mark. Let’s start...

Athletics Unleash Offensive Fury Against the Royals
    2007-05-11 21:09:17
Athletics win 17 to 3 against the royals. They homered 6 times which is the most home runs they had in one game since July 2003. Poor royals, I wish the royals would start doing better for the sake of the fans who have been waiting since the 80’s with Bo Jackson for [...]...
