I love Kerry Wood. At first, I loved him because he could strike out 20 Astros in one game. Then I loved him because, no matter how much pain he was in, or much much he stunk it up out there, he kept trying to come back. He might have been sobbing on the inside, but, on the outside, he always had that same cool, collected, Texas swagger thad seemed to say "If I want to, I can still deliver a 100 mph fastball to your head." Then I loved him because he felt he owed us all something. He wanted to be the Kerry we all wanted him to be. And we wanted it for him. And now I love him because he's on the verge of being THAT Kerry. The one that widens the eyes of the guy in the on-deck circle when Kerry and his 99 mph fastball strides onto the mound in the bottom of the 8th. He's so close. All we need now is the official declaration of "closer" from Lou and a good entry song (too bad "Enter Sandman" is already taken).

Howry and Wood are pitching the middle innings as most closers would, but Marmol is left hanging around until the 9th. I’m guessing it means the closer’s spot is Kerry’s Wood to lose, but what do I know?

Ryan Dempster is scheduled to make his third start of the spring. Dempster appears to be a lock to make the starting rotation, the only question remains is.... will he be slotted as the Cubs number three or number five starter? Dempster has allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in 5 innings in his first two starts with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. Kosuke Fukudome is not expected to play today and do not be surprised to see Piniella's lineup missing such names as Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez as well.

Kameron Loe surrendered six runs in just 5.1 innings on Sunday, and Texas was blanked for the first time since July 7th, when Erik Bedard dominated the Rangers in Arlington with a complete game shutout.
However, the pitcher starting for Kansas City on Sunday was not exactly Erik Bedard. 23-year-old right-hander Leo Nunez, who came into the game with just one career major league start under his belt, crushed the Rangers offense with six strong shutout innings. Texas managed only five hits on the day, with two of those coming from the bat of Gerald Laird. Reliever Joel Peralta picked up where Nunez left off and pitched three innings, earning him his second career save.

If Wright had any trade value coming into his start on Friday night (a dicey proposition at best), it’s probably all but gone now. Yes, Jamey still has a respectable 4.57 ERA. He’s also the not-so-proud owner of a 1.72 WHIP, and opposing hitters have lit Wright up to the tune of a .293/.413/.469 batting line. Yes, that’s right, a .413 OBP. Ugh.
In other news, Kansas City starter Brian Bannister made the Lofton-less Rangers look foolish, with Sammy Sosa’s garbage time home run in the top of the 8th inning providing the Rangers their only offense on the night. Texas lost, 6-1.
