| al-Maliki and al-Sadr both rattle their sabres | | 2008-03-27 12:16:56 | | BAGHDAD - Shiite militiamen are everywhere. Police and Iraqi army checkpoints are nowhere in sight. U.S. soldiers are keeping their distance.
Sadr City — the Baghdad nerve center for the powerful Mahdi Army — is suddenly back on edge as the militia leader, Muqtada al-Sadr, and Iraq’s government lock in a dangerous confrontation over clout and [...]... | | By: TexasFred's
| | Sabres intent on re-signing pending UFAs | | 2007-07-27 23:10:02 | | Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Regier tells Tim Graham of The Buffalo News that he is interested in getting some of the team’s pending unrestricted free agents under contract before they hit the market.

That list of players includes defensemen Brian Campbell and Dmitri Kalinin and forward Jochen Hecht.
“I have spoken in varying terms with different agents,” Regier said of next summer’s UFA group. “We’ll work down that road. We’ve set wheels in motion on the possibility of extending contracts.”
After losing their co-captains in Daniel Briere and Chris Drury this summer, it appears that the Sabres have learned their lesson and will try to negotiate new contracts for their UFAs before it’s too late.

| | Re-signing Roy, Paetsch tops on Sabres agenda | | 2007-07-27 15:59:23 | | Tim Graham of The Buffalo News reports that the Buffalo Sabres are working feverishly towards re-signing restricted free agents Derek Roy and Nathan Paetsch before their scheduled arbitration hearing.

Roy’s hearing is set for Friday, while Paetsch will appear next Thursday. If the Sabres cannot reach a deal with either player, “whatever salary the arbiter decides is binding.” Sabres GM Darcy Regier can then accept the decision and select the term of the contract (one or two years), or “walk away from the ruling and let the player become an unrestricted free agent.”
“A lot of time you end up doing the contract just before the hearing,” Regier said. “The dynamics are such management is there, the player is there, the agent is there. Even when things appear lost the day before, there’s always a possibility to get things done heading into the proceedings.”
Roy is expected to “receive a significant ra... | | By: Rumor Me This

| Sabres not keen on Peca | | 2007-07-26 02:31:56 | | The Buffalo News’ Bob DiCesare reports that the Buffalo Sabres do not appear have any interest in re-signing unrestricted free agent forward Michael Peca.

Sabres GM Darcy Regier has remained “noncommittal” on Peca’s return to his former club, and considering the bad blood between the two, it’s unlikely a deal will be made. Peca sat out the entire 2000-01 season due to a contract dispute, while it was Regier who “bore the brunt of assaults, the intensity of the complaints” from the media and fans.
There are other, more practical issues, as to why the Sabres may not want to re-acquire Peca. Last season’s highest-scoring team possess great depth at the forward position. Peca would end up playing on the fourth line, at best.
And then there is the question of where exactly the Toronto native wants to play.
While Peca, who played last season with the Maple Leafs, has said he would like to return to Buffalo he has also ... | | By: Rumor Me This
| | Sabres To Oilers: "Bring It" | | 2007-07-07 17:54:00 | | The Sabres are getting low on talent. They lost Chris Drury and Daniel Briere to the free agent market, and up-and-coming talent Thomas Vanek is a restricted free agent with a big-spending suitor. Edmonton made a ridiculous 7-year, $50 million offer for Vanek, which included four first round draft picks to Buffalo because of Vanek's status as restricted. As already discussed, the Sabres stupidly matched the offer, and will likely retain Vanek's services. But Sabres' management is not happy about the ordeal, not one bit. Says managing partner Larry Quinn, while stomping his feet and pouting:"As it comes to the Edmonton Oilers, if there is an opportunity for us to put an offer sheet on a player at any time--as long as we're alive -- we'll be very comfortable in doing that. And they can expect it, if it's in our best interest."Take that, you meanie heads.Quinn and the Sabres have apparently taken great offense to Edmonton's completely legal and permitted offer to Vanek, and are ... | | By: Dear Lord Stanley | | |
| | Sabres Show Up | | 2007-05-17 20:07:00 | | After being missing for several days, the Buffalo Sabres were finally found, alive, in Ottawa. They even managed to beat the Senators and delay their inevitable elimination from the Eastern Conference finals. I feel sorry for Ryan Miller. Despite his best efforts to carry his team, he's going to end up just like Roberto Luongo---home early and all alone in the photo. Poor guy.... | | By: Dear Lord Stanley | | |

| An Important Message for the Buffalo Sabres | | 2007-05-16 04:16:00 | | This video was produced before Monday's game, but it still resonates for Wednesday night. Our friend/sportscaster/Red Sox Fan, Kevin Carroll, predicted well before the play-offs began that the Sabres would be down 3 games in the series before the Stanley Cup. "It's gonna play just like the Red Sox-Yankee series. Buffalo is going to be down three games but they're gonna come back and win four in a row, and then sweep the Stanley Cup series." We laughed at that statement then, but half of that statement represents our only hope. And, yes, I know I just broke practically all the rules of superstition by mentioning several unmentionable words.(HT Buffalo Pundit)... | | By: In Java, Literally... | | |
| | Sabres Superstition Handbook | | 2007-04-17 02:48:00 | | I solemnly read the WEDG Superstition Handbook tonight. As it is play-off time, extreme measures are to be taken as to not jinx our Team. The Sabres seem to play their best when I'm at home, with the game on, and I'm doing housework. I also have not worn a certain hockey jersey all season because we haven't been able to get to a Sabres game. All signs, I tell ya'.My favorite rule from the book? This one:"If Andrew Peters scores a goal rules do not apply for the duration of the game. Anarchy ensues."... | | By: In Java, Literally... | | |
