Rice and cement production for domestic use will be sufficient for the rest of the year, but the supply of locally produced salt will not meet demand, requiring continued imports, according to the Government’s Domestic Market Watch Team.
Why VN must still ask to pass the salt
    2008-06-30 10:50:00
Deputy general director of the Viet Nam National Salt Corporation (Visalco) Le Nguyen Chuong spoke with the Viet Nam Economic Times. Viet Nam has a very long coastline, but still has to import salt. Why is there such a paradox? Previously, Viet Nam produced 800,000 to 850,000 tonnes of salt a year, quite enough to satisfy demand. But now, it has to import 250,000 tonnes of clean salt a year for

Seven things to do with salt beef.
    2008-05-29 14:30:00
May 30 ...This day in 1808 was the birthday of Caroline Chisholm, an English gentlewoman who arrived in Sydney, Australia with her husband and children in 1838. She was horrified at the conditions of many of the migrants – particularly the women – and immediately set about addressing the problems. She set up many projects and became famous as ‘the emigrants friend’, meeting every migrant ship and making sure that the single women were safely accommodated and assisted to find work (or husbands, which is the same thing, really). Caroline wrote several tracts to advise potential migrants, and in one of them she discussed the trials and tribulations of ‘bush cookery’. Early settlers were lured to Australia with the phrase “Meat three times a day” – and the meat was usually salt beef (‘corned beef’). Caroline described how to meet the challenge of preparing the same meat every night of the week – and keeping the husband happy. "The great art of bush-cookery con

    Could Salt Water Fuel Cars?
    2008-05-18 15:10:00
You may have heard about an invention created by a 63-year-old named John Kanzius that claims to create an alternative fuel out of salt water. Through sheer serendipity, Kanzius, a former broadcast engineer, found out something incredible -- under the right conditions, salt water can burn at high temperatures. Image courtesy WPBF-TVYes, you're seeing water burn. Kanzius' journey toward surprise inspiration began with a leukemia diagnosis in 2003. Faced with the prospect of debilitating chemotherapy, he decided he would try to invent a better alternative for destroying cancerous cells. What he came up with is his radio frequency generator (RFG), a machine that generates radio waves and focuses them into a concentrated area. Kanzius used the RFG to heat small metallic particles inserted into tumors, destroying the tumors without harming normal cells. But what does cancer treatment have to do with burning salt water? During a demonstration of the RF

Thirty Reasons to Eat pHlavor Liquid Salt
    2008-04-12 00:08:25
Salt is a vital substance for the survival of all living creatures, particularly humans. Water and salt regulate the water content of the body. Water itself regulates the water content of the interior of the cell by working its way into all of the cells it reaches. It has to get there to cleanse and extract the toxic wastes of cell metabolisms. Salt forces some water to stay outside the cells. It balances the amount of water that stays outside the cells. There are two oceans of water in the body; one ocean is held inside the cells of the body, and the other ocean is held outside the cells.Good health depends on a most delicate balance between the volume of these oceans, and this balance is achieved by salt - unrefined salt. When water is available to get inside the cells freely, it is filtered from the outside salty ocean and injected into the cells that are being overworked despite their water shortage. This is the reason why in severe dehydration we develop an edema and retain water.

Korver Making a Big Difference in Salt Lake
    2008-02-25 21:58:00
After an NBA trading deadline that included a flurry of moves (Pau Gasol to the Los Angeles Lakers, Jason Kidd to Dallas Mavericks, and Ben Wallace to Cleveland Cavaliers), the Utah Jazz's acquisition of Kyle Korver has gone unnoticed by the typical NBA fan.Since acquiring the former Sixer in late December, the Jazz have been nothing short of magnificent, as they have gone 19-3. since Korver is only averaging 23.3 minutes per game, but his career-high 46.9 shooting percentage has given the Jazz new life. By providing the three-point range that they've long needed, the Jazz big men, Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur have more room in the paint to score. Korver has enabled his teammates to attack the lane as a result of spreading the floor. This trade may not have had the flash of some of the others but it is still proving to be quite valuable for the Jazz.

Children who consume less salt, drink less soft drinks. This lowers their risk for getting high blood pressure and obesity. When children between the ages of 4 and 18 would half their salt intake, they would drink two glasses of soda less per week. This equals 250 calories that they would consume less, say British researchers. [...]

    Salt by Mark Kurlansky
    2008-02-04 11:31:00
Salt was a New York Times Bestseller and Anthony Bourdain (who I respect) says "...a must-have for any serious cook or foodie." I bought this book thinking that I was going to love it. Well, I hated it. Honestly, I've only read about a quarter of the book but I couldn't get through it. It's really a history book and as much as I love salt as an ingredient or seasoning, this book is just so boring if you're not into history. I'm giving it to my dad. BTW, for foodie reading, I loved Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser.

The Revolving Door at Salt Lake County Jail
    2007-08-13 13:48:53
SALT LAKE,UTAH-You may be surprised to learn of the type of offenders who will be automatically released upon their arrest due to jail overcrowding. According to the current Salt Lake County jail overcrowding policy, all misdemeanor offenders not charged with domestic violence are booked and then released from jail. Class A misdemeanor offenses include: intentional child abuse, lewdness involving a child, sexual battery, assault causing substantial bodily injury, stalking, negligent homicide, DUI involving bodily injury, voyeurism with a recording device, reckless endangerment, elder abuse and vehicle burglary. This policy is carried out without any regard to the amount of bail the judge attached to the case, nor does it consider the likelihood that the defendant will voluntarily appear or whether he poses a risk of harm to the community. This solution leaves our community with many violent offenders who are released from jail soon after being arrested by law enforcement. They are rele

    LEGO Salt n' Pepper Shaker!
    2007-07-30 14:04:56
What can we do with LEGO blocks? For example we can build a salt n' pepper shaker... Just like designer Joel Hesselgren. He put together this shaker using only LEGOs. The salt is in the white coloumn, the pepper is in the black. With the red block you can control what you want to use salt, pepper or both. Via [Klocki] and Joel Hesselgren.

Salt Lake City - It's Hot, Hot, Hot!
    2007-07-26 22:32:00
I just returned from a quick trip to Salt Lake City, Utah the other day. It was my first visit to Utah and I was surprised by the heat. It was over 100 degrees while I was in town and it felt like an oven. Despite the heat, Salt Lake City is a pretty place with beautiful mountains and cute little restaurants lining the streets. One of the best parts was how clean and safe the streets were, even in the city areas. I visited the Gateway Mall which was built for the Olympics several years ago. The outdoor mall has many of the same stores you'd find anywhere else along with a few more local shops. Kids will enjoy the interactive fountain in which water shoots up from multiple holes to the tune of music. I look forward to exploring Utah again one day and seeing more of the state. Have you been to Utah? Let us know what your favorite area was and why.

Miller Gives Lime-and-Salt Beer A Shot at Boosting Sales
    2007-06-13 17:13:56
The Milwaukee brewer is launching Miller Chill, a 110-calorie beer flavored with lime and salt, throughout the U.S. this summer after a successful test run in Texas and several other states. Chill is Miller’s answer to the michelada, a drink popular at Mexican beach resorts usually consisting of beer, lime juice and ice in a salt-rimmed glass. I am willing to give anything a try at least once but I have a feeling I will be sticking to my trusty boggs. Who knows though a six pack of this stuff might be pretty tasty on a hot afternoon when the pool is luked and the BBQ is hot. Apparently they have been testing this stuff in the southwest over the last few months. If anyone has tried it leave a comment and let us know what you thought. WSJ: Original Article

Pan-Roasted Bison with Sea Salt and Parmesan Sweet Potato Oven Fries
    2007-06-09 22:50:00
While shopping at the St Lawrence Market I visited White House Meats and picked up a couple of Bison Rib-Eye steaks at my wife, L’s, request. She heard that Bison was lower in fat and calories as well as having more nutrients than a lot of other meats. White House was clearly the place to go, it’s been around since 1953 and is quickly becoming one of my favourite and more challenging places to shop at the Market. I can easily walk away with a product that I have no idea how to cook; ostrich, rabbit, venison...etc.So, along with my usual free-range capon for my Sunday chicken roast (from Mano’s), a pack of free-range chicken legs and a couple of skinless chicken breasts from Clement Poultry, I had the two 10 oz Bison Rib-Eyes weighing me down along with eggs, kefir, morels, salt (Île de Ré salt from Andrea Brockie, owner of Selsi Sea Rocks) and a plentiful horn of vegetables hanging from canvas bags (all this with only a peameal bacon sandwich for sustenance). Imagine my surprise when I found out that the street outside the market is alive and wiggly with dogs. Woofstock A Festival For Dogs is an wonderful event...that is unless you are draped in meat. I had every dog in a ten foot radius nuzzling my bags as I shimmied and shuffled trying to get clear without causing a fuss. I stopped only for a second when I came face to face with two gargantuan heads peering at me from over the Great Dane pen. Muzzles all spit-webbed, they just stared blankly at me with a wild sort of, what I knew to be, hunger. With much haste I quickly made my way north to Queen Street, meat swinging heavily. After getting home I took inventory to make sure all my meat was still there then got online to learn about my Bison. Century Game Park is located in the Northumberland Hills County in Warkworth, Ontario. Rod J. Potter’s great-great-grandfather settled the land Century Game Park is on now. Study: Should we watch our salt intake?
    2007-03-24 16:17:00
A lot of respected people - doctors and nutritionist, for example, say we should watch our salt intake. And many of us listen because we trust these people to know what they are talking about. As most of you probably know by now, I don't believe something just because somebody with some letters after their name said it. I prefer to do my own research, including finding the more recent studies.

Our Big Trip Part 5- More Wyoming, Salt Lake (The Lake and The City) And Zion National Park
    2007-02-08 18:25:11
The background info about Our Big Trip is here. Day 29- Sunday, July 13: We chilled out this morning, then around 4, Laura, Beth and I rode up to Grand Teton National Park. We drove through it for a while until we got to a spot called Jenny Lake, which featured, of all things, a lake. We took a boat across the lake and hiked up to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. Since it was by now after 6pm, the weather was cool and the trail was empty, so the hiking was quite nice. After we were duly inspired by the point, we headed back around the lake and were treated to some breathtaking views of The Tetons.         I was going to climb up to the top of The Grand Teton and fly down on my portable hang glider, but we would have been late for dinner. And since dinner was pizza, no one would have wanted that. We went to an Italian restaurant in Jackson called the Old Yellowstone Garage. It was all-you-can-eat pizza night, which meant that you paid per person and the wait staff just kept ci
