Given the above picture, you guys probably think I'm going to write some snarky diary about the Sox. But you would be wrong.
Instead, I'm going to tell you a story of community, humanity, and unconditional love.
I arrived in my section yesterday, to find that the 50/50 split of Cubs and Sox fans were already fighting. At least two different sets of guys were separated by security before the game even started. After that, we took to booing every time someone in a Sox shirt entered our section, and the Sox fans returned in kind. Then he appeared at the top of the stairs to our section. Let's call him "Kenny." The round of booes for the slip of an Afican American man, roughly 45, in a White Sox t-shirt died out quickly as people realized that something was different about Kenny. | | Bread is not Satan | | 2008-01-19 04:51:00 | | One of the most important things that I had to do when I made the leap into vegetarianism (Is that even a word?) was to find a way to supplement my protein. You know, find it without all the animal products. It sounds like a daunting task but in reality, it was simple. 2 words - whole grains. I added in whole grains in every way possible to my diet. Yes, ladies still eating bread. Just eating the good for your bod kind. Here is what the lovely people that put together our beautiful food pyramid have to say about grains:
What foods are in the grain group?
Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is a grain product. Bread, pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereals, tortillas, and grits are examples of grain products. Grains are divided into 2 subgroups, whole grains and refined grains. (Repeat after me: Whole grains - good, refined grains - bad. )
Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel—the bran, germ, and endosperm. Examples include:
whole-wheat flour
bulgur (cracked wheat)
oatmeal
whole cornmeal
brown rice
Refined grains have been milled, a process that removes the bran and germ. This is done to give grains a finer texture and improve their shelf life, but it also removes dietary fiber, iron, and many B vitamins. Did everyone catch that? Continuing: Things on the list of refined grain products are:
white flour
degermed cornmeal
white bread
white rice
Most refined grains are enriched. This means certain B vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid) and iron are added back after processing. Don’t be fooled ladies. Fiber is not added back to refined grains. Check the ingredient list before you make the decision to consume it. Make sure that what you put in your bod is actually going to do you some good. Grains do not always mean that your tushy is going to expand at the site of it. Whole grains are our friend. Protein in the good form. Yep. You can feel free to not loathe the loaf any longer.
