    Pain Scales
    2008-06-29 23:49:00
Understanding another person's pain is not easy. Pain scales have been developed to aid in our understanding, but they must be used correctly and they should be part of a complete pain assessment. One-dimensional scales, such as the numeric 0 to 10 scale, are appropriate for the acute care setting. A more comprehensive approach should be used for patients with chronic or persistent pain. Bob Barr: Tipping The Scales?
    2008-05-14 16:23:18
Former Georgia Congressman Bob Barr officially announced his Libertarian Party presidential bid earlier this week, setting off speculation that he could play a spoiler's role in November. Barr represented Georgia's 7th District as a Republican for four terms and was one of the House managers of Bill Clinton's impeachment before redistricting forced him out in 2002. Near the end of his tenure Barr became increasingly critical of President Bush's policies, specifically the Patriot Act, that infringed on civil liberties and has called for an end to the Iraq War since leaving office. Barr had acknowledged interest in a potential Libertarian run earlier this year and formed an exploratory committee on April 5 that led to Monday's announcement. While most of the focus of late has been on the division within the Democratic Party, Republican nominee John McCain has base problems of his own and Barr could present an intriguing alternative to disenchanted conservative, libertarian, and Republi

2 Guitar Scales To Learn If You Want To Rock!
    2008-05-13 21:08:34
The two guitar scales to learn if you want to rock out on your guitar are without a doubt the pentatonic scale and diatonic scale. Especially if you want to play with guitar speed! Why learn them? Because these are the scales primarily used to create melodies and solos in rock songs. If you can get a grasp on these scales along all 22+ frets of your guitar, then you should have the freedom to play lead guitar. If you learn these scales, then you can play some rock guitar. You must learn the minor and major pentatonic scales along with the 5 modes. You must also learn the major and minor diatonic scales along with the 7 modes. The pentatonic scale is a 5-note scale and that's why it has 5 modes. The diatonic scale has 7 notes and that's why there are 7 modes. Modes simply mean starting the scale from a different note. For instance, if you start the A Minor Pentatonic Scale from the second note then you're playing the C Ionian Pentatonic Mode. Even though the notes are the same as if you

    How to Learn Guitar Scales
    2008-05-13 21:07:45
So you want to know how to learn guitar scales so you can solo all over the neck of your guitar. With scales you can play great melodies or just plain raw guitar speed. By the end of this short article, you'll know what you need to do to learn the guitar scales you need for lead guitar. Read on to find out the secrets of the pros. Tip #1: Practice guitar scales both with alternate picking and hammer-ons and pull-offs. This way you'll be armed when it comes to both shredding and playing in legato style. Don't just practice picking and don't just practice with legato (smooth and connected). Do both. Tip #2: One of the best ways to learn your guitar scales is by practicing them very, very slowly. You see, your mind records your finger movements. When you play fast and you don't know how to do it yet, you make a lot of mistakes. Your mind records these and you learn very slowly. So the key is to practice them with rhythm but very slowly so your mind records the movements properly. Later yo

Blues Guitar Scales - How Blues Scales For Guitar Work In Lead Guitar Playing
    2008-01-04 23:00:15
The blues guitar scales are really based off of the pentatonic scales with one extra note added. We call that extra note the "blue note" because it gives the pentatonic scale its obvious "bluesyness." The only real difference between the scales on the guitar and the same scales on any other instrument is the fact that there is more than one way to play them on a guitar. This is due mostly to the fact that the guitar is a stringed instrument and there are at least 3-5 ways to play any unique note. The minor pentatonic scale is created using the root (or 1), flatted 3rd, 4th, 5th, and flatted 7th of a major scale. Notice that there is no 2nd or 6th scale tone used. There's an interesting reason for that but it requires a substantial amount of music theory to explain it and this isn't really the place for that.To create the minor blues scale we take the minor pentatonic scale and add a flatted 5th (or sharp 4) to it. In the key of A, this creates a scale with the notes A, C, D, Eb, E, and G in it. Some people don't differentiate between the minor and the major blues scales. If someone calls a scale a blues scale, assume they mean the minor version.A major pentatonic scale is created with the 1st (root,) 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th tone of a major scale. In C that would be C, D, E, G, and A. To make it a major blues scale you add a flatted 3rd which gives you C, D, Eb, E, G, and A in the key of C.Notice that the rule governing relative major and minor keys/scales is also in effect here. If you look at the keys of A minor and C major, which are relative, meaning they contain the same notes, you'll see the same group of notes. The A minor blues scale is A, C, D, Eb, E, and G. The C major blues scale is C, D, Eb, E, G, and A. Same notes, different starting point. This sort of thing happens all the time in music. This is of particular interest if you're playing blues lead guitar because you can see that your blues guitar scales really do double duty. Once you learn one patter

Learning the Jazz Guitar Scales - Basic How-To's
    2007-12-15 00:26:24
When learning to play jazz guitar, you'll have to master learning the scales. Most players are led to believe that all they need to do is learn how to finger the scale and that's where their learning ends. When it comes time to play solos and improvs, they get frustrated because they find it hard to just play. The real problem is not that playing an improvisation is hard or beyond their skill. The real problem is that they haven't learned to master the scales as they thought they had.Basically, there are five skills that need to be mastered because they set the foundation for your improvisation and solo play. If you don't master all five skills in your lessons, then you will have a difficult time doing the improvisation because you don't truly know the scale and as a result won't have a feel for the scale. The five skills are: ears, eyes, intellect, fingers and application. Let's see how they can work for us.How-to #1: Learn to hear the sound of the scale so that when you hear a

    Should I Learn Guitar Scales?
    2007-11-20 22:52:59
Do you really need to spend any of your valuable time learning guitar scales and theory? The argument that a guitarists will use to not learn any type of theory is that they will be in danger of losing there originality. They won't be able to be or sound like themselves, they will be caught up and constrained within the confines of rules and regulations. The only problem with that kind of thinking is that you are in danger of not growing and progressing as a musician. All basic lead guitar instruction courses at the root level will tell you to learn chords, scales and arpeggios because they know that you will gain a greater understanding of how the music process inter-grates and works together, you will expand your playing with new possibilities and concepts, rather than the reverse. And here is the most important factor. A lot of self taught musicians tend to suffer from episodes of self doubt because of not knowing what to play, which in turn can breed insecurities and lack of self con

Why do I need to learn guitar scales?
    2007-10-27 21:50:58
ATOMIC Insider Jordan dropped me an e-mail today: "I notice all your speed exercises are based on the major scale, minor scale, and what I've never heard of until your e-mails modes. Memorizing all of these patterns are a lot of work. What's the point in learning all these guitar scales?" Jordan, first off. It's unnecessary to try and memorize every mode of the major scale and pentatonic scales all at once. Not only memorize them, learn them to the point where you can apply them. You'll also want to listen to what each interval sounds like with each scale. If I were to list them in order of importance for rock music, I would say: #1 Pentatonic Scales #2 Major Scale #3 Minor Scale #4 the 5 Modes that go with the Major and Minor Scale After that, if you want to venture elsewhere, I'd say work with the Blues Scale, Harmonic Minor Scale, Melodic Minor Scale, and others. This is why you need to learn guitar scales. (I may have already said some of this before on ATOMIC, but this is for Jordan and others like him.) Scales are the backbone of music. Chords are formed from scales Chords relate to each other in order to form harmonious progressions based on scales Melodies and solos are often created with scales alone Now to answer a more rare question about scales. Do I have to base my solos, chord progressions, and melodies solely on scales? Yes and no. Understanding scales and music theory is more like a roadmap to creating completely harmonious tunes, so use them as a guide. However, I once asked Atlanta jazz guitarist Sal Gentile the same question. I also said that I notice musicians don't always play within key or scale and that I was confused. His response was something like this: "It's necessary to play outside of scales, but use scales as a roadmap to your notes you know will be on. Playing outside of your scales, by adding chromatics for instance, you're adding tension to your music. Music is all about tension and release." He also yelled at me and told me to practice with my Berklee Modern Methods. He's the kind of guy who would give his students Mel Bay's breakdowns. Anyway, that's why you need to learn your guitar scales.

    OCD off the Scales
    2007-09-16 02:51:25
The new car is purchased and I"ll probably post a picture here. We got an incredibly great deal and for that we are very grateful.Had fun having supper with Kari and MIke using a gift certificate I got for my birthday. But I came home to yet another 20 minute sobbing fest by Dominyk whose obsession with Vault Zero has gone way beyond help. He can't think about any thing else. He has had one a day this week for being good at school, but now it has to be two or three a day or he just sobs and sobs. We have tried distracting him, spending time with him, talking to him, comforting him, but it just goes on and on. It's getting so bad it almost scares me. His OCD has never been this bad before.ANd I had his psychiatrist appointment written down wrong, so we missed it this week and he really needs to go in so we can see what we can do about this. And Tony's rib is not cracked. And I am wishing it were bedtime...

    Shipping Scales
    2007-07-10 20:52:45
In my efforts to make more money online, I have been selling lots of items on Ebay and half.com. I have to ship almost daily. Unfortunately, my local post office is always busy. The lines are out of the door most times of the day. The self-service kiosk is always broken, so I can’t weigh my packages and buy my own stamps. It is so disappointing. But, I may just have to invest in my own Shipping Scales, so that I can weigh and ship items quickly without the hassle of the post office. Shopping online is always a lot easier than shopping in stores - you can find what you want, pay and go on to do something else. All from the comfort of your home or office. quicksupply.net is a professional website with bench scales for a company’s shipping department, floor scales for larger freight and postal scales, which are office-sized. A good variety of postal-scales are available, priced sensibly from $19. One of my clients is looking to replace her own shipping scales for her small b

    The Unbalanced Scales of Love
    2007-05-20 21:28:00
Why is it that in a relationship, one person always loves or cares about the other person more? I've been on the side of the relationship where I care more, many, many times. It sucks and I know it. Now I'm on the side where the other person cares more, should I be happy? Maybe I should, but I'm not. Every time I am told something that should theoretically go weak in the knees or blush or be flattered or just something, I just don't feel anything. I feel so guilty every time this happens and I don't feel anything, instead of standing there in awkward silence, I just say something back or I kiss him or something like that just so I feel less guilty. I'm beginning to wonder whether I'm incapable of loving anyone but myself or maybe I'm just a cold and hard-hearted girl.

Just like we had a formula of steps that we could use to make a scale (click here to see the lesson on building scales), we can also use a formula to make chords. A basic chord is built on 3 notes. These 3 note chords are called “triads”. Other notes can be added to a tried to make “extensions”. This lesson will focus just on triads. Extensions will

    A tip of the scales
    2007-01-25 11:30:00
Hell hath no fury like a supermodel scorned. Remember those unflattering paparazzi photos of her royal fivehead in Australia that hit the internet a couple of weeks ago and it seemed the self-fulfilling prophecy of following in Grandma Winfrey's swollen feet had come to pass? Well, Thigh-ra was surely making her shit list and checking it twice. Which explains the latest publicity stunt in her greatest hits of attention whore syndrome, never missing out on an opportunity to fire back at those meanie buckets (read: bloggers) who made fun of her for making repeat trips to the Sizzler lunch buffet."It was such a strange meanness and rejoicing that people had," she says in People's next issue, on stands Friday. The magazine says she believes the photos were snapped at an unflattering angle. (She will wear the same swimsuit on the Feb. 1 episode of The Tyra Banks Show.) Banks, 33, worries about what effect such reports might have on her fans. "I get so much mail from young girls who say, 'I look up to you … I think you're beautiful,' " she tells People. "So when they say that my body is 'ugly' and 'disgusting,' what does that make those girls feel like?"Oh, I dunno... maybe the way Robin Manning did in the augural pilot? Or 3rd season contestant Toccara Jones or cycle 5 castoff Diane Hernandez felt for not fitting the mold of what a top model should look like? Doesn't feel so nice when the shoe's on the other bloated ankle, eh Ty Ty? Excuse the hell outta me if my heart isn't broken over a drama queen who devoted an episode featuring herself in a fat suit, surrounded by overweight chicks for support — sobbing because she'd been mistreated and ridiculed for being "chunky," knowing that at the end of the day, she can ditch her Shallow Hal experiment with the pull of a zipper but these real-life fat women can't. Well guess who's at the mercy of Photoshop now? Cry me a river, bitch.Speaking from the soapbox of endless doubt when it comes to my own warped se
