| | SINGAPORE - BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES HUB | | 2007-09-05 11:37:00 | | Singapore government has the vision of being a hub for biomedical sciences. Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam, Deputy Prime Minister And Minister for Defence, in his speech at the launch of the Life Science Joint Ventures Initiatives, said that “comprising pharmaceuticals, medical devices, biotechnology and healthcare services, Singapore aims to be internationally recognised as a biomedical sciences hub, carrying out innovative research in the basic, applied and clinical areas”.The government tries to achieve this by setting up research infrastructure and attracting foreign scientists to do their research in Singapore, as well as laying out a set of permissive regulations on controversial research.Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) was set up to foster world-class scientific research and human capital for a vibrant knowledge based Singapore , under the aegis of Ministry of Trade and Industry of Singapore. Its Biomedical Research Council oversees the development of biomedical industry in Singapore.Visit A*STAR In 2003, a new research complex, Biopolis, was opened. It is a $500 million investment funded by A*STAR and Singapore government. Conceived as the cornerstone of a much broader vision to build up the biomedical sciences industry in Singapore, the Biopolis is a purpose-built biomedical research hub where researchers and scientists from the public and private sectors are co-located.Visit BIOPOLIS Visit BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES in A*STARVisit Biomedical Sciences (BMS) in singapore BIOPOLISBiopolis is an international research and development centre located in Singapore for biomedical sciences. | | Karl Popper And the Social Sciences | | 2007-08-02 15:46:00 | | Author: William A. Gorton Paperback: 145Publisher: State University of New York Press (February 10, 2006) Language: EnglishISBN: 0791466620 This is the first book-length exploration of Karl Popper’s often-neglected contributions to the philosophy of social science. William A. Gorton situates Popper’s ideas on social inquiry within the broader framework of his thought, including his philosophy of natural science, his ontological theories, and his political thought. Gorton places special attention on Popper’s theory of situational analysis and how it aims to heighten our understanding of the social world by untangling the complex web of human interaction that produces unintended—and often unwanted—social phenomena. Situational analysis, Gorton contends, involves a significant departure from the method of the natural sciences, despite Popper’s plea for the unity of scientific method. Gorton also addresses some common misconceptions concerning Popper’s stance toward eco... | | By: GanEden For Books | | |

| | | The Changing Concept of Epigenetics (New York Academy of Sciences) | | 2006-07-23 04:42:40 | | The Changing Concept of EpigeneticsAnnals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 981: 82-96. (2002)Eva Jablonka and Marion J. LambCohn Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Ideas, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv 69978, IsraelABSTRACT: We discuss the changing use of epigenetics, a term coined by Conrad Waddington in the 1940s, and how the epigenetic approach to development differs from the genetic approach. Originally, epigenetics referred to the study of the way genes and their products bring the phenotype into being. Today, it is primarily concerned with the mechanisms through which cells become committed to a particular form or function and through which that functional or structural state is then transmitted in cell lineages. We argue that modern epigenetics is important not only because it has practical significance for medicine, agriculture, and species conservation, but also because it has implications for the way in which we should view heredity and evolution. In particular, recognizing that there are epigenetic inheritance systems through which non-DNA variations can be transmitted in cell and organismal lineages broadens the concept of heredity and challenges the widely accepted gene-centered neo-Darwinian version of Darwinism.technorati tags: epigenetics, new+york, academy, jablonka, lamb, cohn, institute, genetic, genes, phenotype, cells, medicine, agriculture, heredity, evolution, inheritance, dna, darwinian, darwinism, tel+aviv
