| Scientists believe Mars lander exposed ice crumbs | | 2008-06-20 08:13:16 | | By JOHN ANTCZAK, Associated Press Writer
Scientists believe NASA’s Phoenix Mars lander exposed bits of ice while recently digging a trench in the soil of the Martian arctic, the mission’s principal investigator said Thursday.
Crumbs of bright material initially photographed in the trench later vanished, meaning they must have been frozen water that vaporized after being exposed, [...] | | By: ArticlesModern | | |

| Scientists create bacteria that eat junk, produce oil | | 2008-06-19 09:11:00 | | A company called LS9 is creating nearly pump-ready oil using single-celled bacteria. They start with industrial yeast organisms or "non-pathogenic strains of E. coli," and redesign their DNA so that they produce a different kind of waste. Crude oil is not far removed, molecularly, from the fatty acids expelled by yeast or E. coli during fermentation, so a little bit of DNA alteration bypasses the fatty acids and produces "Oil 2.0."The "bugs" can be fed a variety of feedstock, from politically sensitive corn to Brazilian sugar cane to California wheat straw to Southern wood chips. The result is the same: crude oil that is almost ready to pour into your car. What's more: the enterprise is carbon negative, putting out less CO2 than the operation requires. At the moment it takes a 1,000-liter fermentation machine one week to make a 40-gallon drum of crude. It will be a moment before they have a seamless industrial-sized operation. And there is that little concern of hundreds of billions of | | By: Car News | | |

| Is Evolution In Trouble? A Scientific Dissent From Darwinism: Over 700 Scientists Reject Evolution And Counting! | | 2008-06-17 11:26:00 | | Most Americans seem to think that "all" scientists believe in the theory of evolution.Nothing could be further from the truth. There are a huge number of highly qualified scientists who reject Darwinism and that number is growing every day. Here is one example of this movement away from Darwinism:----http://www.dissentfromdarwin.org/A Scientific Dissent From DarwinismDuring recent decades, new scientific evidence from many scientific disciplines such as cosmology, physics, biology, "artificial intelligence" research, and others have caused scientists to begin questioning Darwinism's central tenet of natural selection and studying the evidence supporting it in greater detail.Yet public TV programs, educational policy statements, and science textbooks have asserted that Darwin's theory of evolution fully explains the complexity of living things. The public has been assured that all known evidence supports Darwinism and that virtually every scientist in the world believes the theory to be t | | By: Shattered Paradigm | | |

| 1 in 4 Indian Scientists Believes in God | | 2008-06-15 20:46:35 | | By Syed AkbarIn The Asian Age Eminent scientist Richard Dawkins can talk about the "God Delusion" but he won’t get much applause from his colleagues in India, for a new study says that one in four scientists of India believe firmly that there is a supernatural power up there guiding their destiny. The scientists also strictly follow religious practices and rituals for academic, professional, material and spiritual satisfaction. In all, 50 per cent of the scientists surveyed believe in the efficacy of prayers, as against just 10 per cent of scientists in the United States.A considerable number of them also believe in the theory of Karma, predestination, life after death while some others also believe in ghosts and evil spirits.A joint survey by the city-based Centre for Inquiry and the US-based Institute for the Study of Secularism, Society and Culture of Trinity College, revealed interesting facts on the beliefs and religious practices of Indian scientists. As many as 1,100 scientists | | By: Spiritual Village | | |

| Scientists | | 2008-02-26 23:29:11 | | Princess wanted help with her science. She said she had to make a sentence out of each term, without repeating the definition. OK. “Transpiration, the process by which plants give off water through their stoma.” Hmm. The Department of Transpiration announced new water saving incentives today. “Respiration, the process of releasing energy from food.” Hmm. My stupid mother thought respiration meant breathing. “Water cycle, the process by which water moves through the environment.” Hmm. I always wear my helmet when I ride my water cycle. | Scientists Baffled, Just Baffled That The Snow Keeps Falling ... Buuurrr | | 2008-02-14 17:58:41 | | To quote Al 'Goracle' Gore:Scientists “don’t have any models that give them a high level of confidence” ... scientists “don’t know. … They just don’t know.”I know Al ... I know.Denver Post:Dry-winter forecasts were flat wrong this year for much of Colorado and the Southwest, and weather experts say they're struggling to understand why the snow just keeps falling. Some forecasters blame climate change, and others point to the simple vicissitudes of weather. Regardless, almost everyone called for a dry-to-normal winter in Colorado and the Southwest — but today, the state's mountains are piled so thick with snow that state reservoirs could fill and floods could be widespread this spring."The polar jet stream has been on steroids. We don't understand this. It's pushing our limits, and it's humbling," said Klaus Wolter, a meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the University of Colorado at Boulder.Baffling ... just baffling.

| Scientists Reprogram Human Skin Cells Into Embryonic Stem Cells | | 2008-02-12 02:59:00 | | (HealthDay News) -- U.S. scientists say they've reprogrammed human skin cells into ones with the same blank-slate properties as embryonic stem cells, a breakthrough that could aid in treating many diseases while sidestepping controversy.Human embryonic stem cells have the ability to become every cell type found in the human body. Being able to create these cells en masse and without using human eggs or embryos could generate a potentially limitless source of immune-compatible cells for tissue engineering and transplantation medicine, said the scientists, from the University of California, Los Angeles. The researchers genetically altered human skin cells using four regulator genes, according to findings published online in the Feb. 11 edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of the Sciences. The result produced cells called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells, that are almost identical to human embryonic stem cells in function and biological structure. | Scientists in Japan claim to have developed techology to melt asbestos and prevent release of fibers into the air | | 2008-02-08 22:08:00 | | Researchers with Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology claim that they can melt asbestos. Their new technology has been reported to melt the flame-resistant material into a liquid. The liquid then cools and turns into a sealed solid that can be handled and removed without releasing dangerous asbestos fibers. The process uses strong infrared rays from a newly developed gasket. The researchers also claim that, while their technology will melt asbestos from a concrete wall in seconds, it will not harm the concrete wall underneath. Asbestos was widely used in industrial settings for many decades, and removing it safely has been expensive and difficult. Inhaling asbestos fibers, which are easily released into the air when asbestos-containing materials are disturbed, can cause a variety of serious respiratory diseases, including malignant mesothelioma. For the full story, go to http://money.cnn.comAnd here is the rest of it. | | By: Mesothelioma Treatment Info | | |
