Port Seton and North Berwick videos - the east coast of Scotland
    2008-07-06 09:52:07
I finally got around to uploading a couple of videos I took last month in one of my favourite areas in Scotland, East Lothian, which lies to the east of Edinburgh. The first video is taken from the promenade in Port Seton, a small coastal village, which has great views across the Forth estuary [...]

Andy Murray, the top male British tennis player, a fellow Scot, is one of the celebrities telling us of his favourite places in his home country in the Visit Scotland “Be Inspired” Campaign. It’s unfortunate that Murray crashed out of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships yesterday with a distinctly uninspiring performance. I suppose there’s [...]

Blain wants Scotland to focus on T20

Scotland bowler John Blain has claimed Scottish cricket has to embrace the Twenty20 game - or keep playing in front of tiny crowds. Attendances for Friends Provident Trophy matches, as well as new domestic 20-over competition, have been below the audiences south of the border. And Blain believes there are lessons to be learnt from elsewhere. He said: [...]

    Scotland's Gun Ban Doesn't Work
    2008-05-18 21:00:00
Scotland has had a gun ban in place for a decade now. Guess what? According to a Scottish newspaper , "Cases of attempted murder involving firearms [are] almost three times that of a decade ago." That's right. Ten years after a gun ban was put in place, crimes involving firearms have increased, not decreased. Add Scotland to the list of places that have implemented gun bans, only to see things get worse. It's the same story in England, where news reports last month say gun-related crime...(read more)

    My favourite castles in Scotland
    2008-04-27 05:44:09
It’s pretty hard to come up with my favourite castles in Scotland as there are so many from which to choose. Sometimes it’s the location of the castle that’s the attraction as opposed to the interior of the castle. However as I like getting off the beaten track my choice of castles reflects this. I dun have the video but this is what happened:Bono, lead singer of the rock band ‘U2’, is famous throughout the entertainment industry for being more than just a little self-righteous.At a recent ‘U2’ concert in Glasgow, Scotland, he asked the audience for total silence. Then, in the silence, he started to slowly clap his hands, once every few seconds. Holding the audience in total silence, he said into the microphone:“Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies.”From the front of the crowd a voice with a broad Scottish accent shouted and pierced the silence:“Well f**king stop doin’ it then, ya evil bastard!!!”Only in Scotland…

    Travelogue: EDINBURGH, Scotland
    2008-02-21 04:07:41
While daydreaming of better days, I thought I'd share some of my travel stories. One special place lives happily ever after in my memory. Edinburgh is a city that delights the mind as well as the eye. It is a city where the past lives comfortably with the present. If staying in one of the city's central hotels, nothing brings more pleasure than exploring Edinburgh's beautiful historic streets on foot.Like Rome, Edinburgh was built on seven hills. Rising above Princess street (the main shopping promenade), is the castle rock, a volcanic plug where the first defensive settlement was founded over 2,000 years ago, and a landmark to anyone who is lost. To the south, The Royal Mile, probably Edinburgh's oldest street, runs through the old town, beyond the Flodden Wall and towards the parkland of Hollyrood.

Hoy me pregunto: ¿por qué Scotland Yard?
    2008-01-04 03:42:51

    I Love Scotland
    2007-12-18 08:01:14
Note: I must say that this story is written because I feel guilty that I have written many things about Scotland which seem more like complains, especially about the weather. Weather is not that bad, if we know how to handle it (which puts me in the category of 'virgin' since I have no clue. But I'm learning, and I'm still alive, which is the most important thing). Scotland has got so many other good things and I just realized I haven't written any of those, so I'll take my chance now. When my family found out I was going to move to Scotland, most of them were freaked out. My auntie, despite of being married to a German and calls Germany as her second home, thinks that Scotland is far, far away. She told me, "You only need to walk to North Pole! Aduh, Anita, can't you choose some other country which is closer to Indonesia?". This is the same auntie who was disappointed when I canceled my plan to get my post-grad degree in Germany and chose Australia instead. Only after telling people that we only need to hop on a plane from Amsterdam for 1 hour to get to Aberdeen, they (hopefully) realize that Scotland isn't that far, far away. Or the same amount of time spent if you fly from London. So to think about it, London-Aberdeen or Amsterdam-Aberdeen is like Jakarta-Surabaya. Not too bad, isn't it?Second thing to notice in Scotland is that the country is so beautiful. It's somewhat like New Zealand: very green with clear blue sky, mountains, hills, and waterfalls everywhere. Its tranquility and fresh air always makes me want to trap some of it into the jar and bring it back to Jakarta. The vegetation gives an eerie feeling, it's easy to imagine hobbits and elves popping out of the bushes to say hello to you. Think about The Lord of The Rings combine with Harry Potter movies. There's no better way to enjoy Scotland by driving around the country. Last year we drove to Portree, Skye, and the landscape is so breathtaking I was behaving like a crazy tourist, frantic

Donald Trump's Scotland Golf Plan Rejected
    2007-12-18 07:52:47
It's not everyday Donal Trump faces a rejection. But his plan to build a £1 billions (that's Rp 20 trillions or about one-third of Indonesia State Budget of Revenues and Expenditures!) golf complex and housing development at the Menie Estate in Aberdeenshire was rejected last weekend by Aberdeenshire Council's infrastructure committee. It doesn't matter that the development could bring £150m to the local economy over the next decade and creating 400 jobs. It doesn't matter that the reason why Donald Trump chose Scotland in the first place is because he's half Sottish, while he could choose some other place which would easily say yes to whatever his proposal is.I'm sure if this happens in Indonesia the local council will have voted yes even before seeing and reviewing the proposal, just because he is Donald Trump. So, should we suggest Indonesia to Mr.Trump?

Scotland Win their first Golf World Cup
    2007-11-25 19:37:01
Scotland's Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren will take the World Cup back to the home of golf for the first time after beating the United States on the third hole of a sudden death playoff on Sunday. A fourth par of the day at the 18th proved enough for the Scots to defeat overnight leaders Boo Weekley and Heath Slocum, pick up a cheque for $800,000 each and make amends for their own playoff defeat by Germany last year. "To come back after a playoff loss last year and win is superb, particularly as my playoff record is rubbish," Montgomerie told reporters after finally getting his hands on the John Hopkins trophy at the ninth attempt. The Americans had looked set for victory when the Scots twice found the sand on the first extra hole but Warren nailed a 12-foot putt for par and Slocum just missed a seven-foot birdie effort. Slocum had successfully drained a birdie putt just two feet shorter at the same green to force the playoff, giving the Americans a five-under 67 to match the S

Longniddry Bents is a two mile long beach, east of Edinburgh, in the county of East Lothian. The beach currently holds a rural Seaside Award. There are 3 car parks along the beach. My photos are taken from the Gosford car park, the furthest east. Many wild flowers grow right up to the shoreline. The views across the Firth of Forth to Edinburgh are rather dominated by the Cockenzie Power Station. The distinctive twin chimney stacks belch out enough pollution from the coal fired power station for it to one of the worst polluters in the UK! Pollution aside, I find the building iconic. You can see Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh on the horizon. There are still a lot of concrete block anti-tank defences strewn along the shoreline. You can describe the beach as conventional picture postcard material. However I really like Longniddry Bents and go there often for walks or a coffee break. Ghosts ahoy in Dundee, Scotland
    2007-07-15 09:57:40
The Frigate Unicorn in Dundee is offering ghost hunters the opportunity to spend a night aboard the haunted ship. A devoted former custodian of the ship who died before the 2nd World War has been spotted several times. The Unicorn is a 46 gun wooden warship, built in 1824 and the oldest British built warship still afloat. Proceeds from the paranormal investigations are desperately needed to preserve the ship’s wooden hull.  The ship receives no public funding.  I find this rather strange when read that a project such as the Alnwick Garden  in Northumberland has received massive public subsidies to fulfil the rather uninspired horticultural ambitions of a duchess. I think it’ll be a great pity if the ship starts to disintegrate due to lack of money to carry out preservation work. Edinburgh Castle, Scotland
    2007-07-14 06:07:44
The history of Edinburgh Castle Edinburgh Castle Each day a cannon is fired at one o’clock. Edinburgh Castle is one of the oldest and most famous castles in the world. The castle dominates the city centre skyline and overlooks Princes Street. The Edinburgh Military Tattoo takes place on the castle Esplanade each year. Here Mary Queen of Scots gave birth to a son James who became King James VI of Scotland and James first of England. Two hundred year old graffiti in Edinburgh Castle’s prison vaults is one of the inspirations behind the development of a major new exhibition within the castle which will explore the castle’s connections with the American War of Independence as well as 18th century European conflicts including the French Revolution, through the stories of the men who found themselv

The best and worst service station toilets in central Scotland
    2007-07-11 12:09:29
A study by the AA reveals that driver satisfaction with service stations on UK roads has improved over the last 3 years.  I do agree when the AA says it’s a bit of lottery to know what you will find when you stop at an unfamiliar service station. photo by carloslines  I have to admit that I generally only use the toilets in service stations,  I take my own food and drink with me.  So here are my best and worst of service station toilets in central Scotland. In Scotland, I would rate the Kinross services on the M90  between Edinburgh and Perth most highly. The toilets are always very clean and fresh. There’s also an area of grass with a few picnic benches.  The toilets at Harthill on the M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh are also pleasant to use. The worst toilets are at Musselburgh as you approach Edinburgh on the A1.  They are smelly, often without toilet paper or soap and sport wobbly broken toilets seats.  Not far behind in the smelly stakes are the toilets at Dr

    Guide to East Lothian, Scotland
    2007-07-08 21:24:37
My latest UK destination guide to East Lothian is now online. East Lothian lies to the east of Edinburgh. East Lothian has miles of coastline along the North Sea with several lovely beaches, such as North Berwick pictured below. There’s a Seabird Centre in North Berwick and trips around the Bass Rock in Summer. North Berwick with the Bass Rock in the background I really like East Lothian because of the variety of the coastal and inland landscapes and towns and villages. East Lothian is an ideal day out if you are staying in Edinburgh. although the area does merit a stay of a few days. Gullane Beach

Murano Glass at the National Museum of Scotland
    2007-06-21 11:59:58
My other theme for my visit to the museum earlier this week was the glass display. My favourite displays were of the Murano pieces. Murano is an island close to Venice, where glass has been made since the 9th century. The photo below shows pieces from the mid to late 19th century, when Salvati led the revival of the Venetian glass industry. Salvati was born in Vicenza and worked as barrister in Venice. The other photo is a collection of Murano glassware from the 1980s. You can also see my reflection in the display case as I took the photo. Technorati Tags: National Museum Scotland, Murano glass

Is this the most colourful toilet in Scotland?
    2007-06-19 12:28:32
I just had to get out my camera and photograph the ladies toilets at the Dean Gallery in Edinburgh. It’s a riot of colour and a great change from many dismal public facilities. Regular readers of my blog will know I have a bee in my bonnet about lack of and the awful state of public toilets in the UK. So it’s a refreshing change to be able to make postive comments.Technorati Tags: public toilets

    Is this Scotland?
    2007-06-10 21:08:10
You may think of Scotland as a wet, cloudy and gloomy place but this was Oban, on the west coast of Scotland, basking in the evening sun on Friday last week. I think it looks more like the Italian Riveria! McCaig’s Tower, the classical folly in the background only adds to the illusion. Oban is one of the main ports to Scottish Islands where you can catch a ferry to destinations such as Mull, Coll, Tiree and the Uists. Technorati Tags: Oban, McCaig’s Folly, Scotland

Beecraigs Country Park, West Lothian, Scotland.
    2007-05-24 12:10:33
I visited Beecraigs Country Park between Linlithgow and Bathgate, this week. It’s quite a narrow windy road to drive there but it’s well signposted. The park has a deer farm with a large herd of red deer. The best place to watch the deer is the raised observation platform which also has great views down to the Forth Estuary and across the Fife. There is a loch where various activities such as fishing and canoeing are on offer. There are many walks in the park with picnic benches, a restaurant, a shop, toilets and plenty of car parking.
