| Checking Localised Search Engine Rankings from Elsewhere | | 2008-08-21 05:24:01 | | Google's search engine results pages (SERPS) are increasingly becoming more localised. If you wanted to see the results that people in Australia get on google.com.au when searching for terms like "SEO" then you simply accessed the regional site. But now, the results you get from any regional site are adjusted slightly to reflect your current location.
There is a way to tell Google that you want the same results that others see in a given location. I blogged about this approach a bit back in January (see How to see Google.com USA results from a different country), but I wanted to follow up and highlight some additional parameters that you can use to be even more specific.
Perform a search in Google and then look at the URL of the Google results. You will notice that there are some parameters in the URL that tell Google what you are searching for. For example, a search for "pizza" will have a URL like this:

| How many number one search engine rankings? | | 2008-03-27 04:20:09 | | I was looking at a competitor's site for SEO services
the other day and they made a few boasts in their landing page about
their track record. One of the bullet points said that they had 200
clients which was not too bad. As a comparison, we currently have over
100 campaigns under active management.
But another claim stated that they had achieved "500 number one
rankings" for these clients (an average of 2.5 per client). Well this
didn't seem to many to me - and so I thought I'd review our current
portfolio of campaigns to see what our numbers are.
If we look at all the major and regional search engines that we track
for our current campaigns only, we currently have achieved 3,214 number one rankings (an average of 32+ per client). If we looked at Google alone - we currently have 417 number one rankings (an average of 4+ per client). No too shabby.
If we expand that to top 10 rankings - the number goes to 2,193 in Google and reaches 17,429 if... | | By: Sonicatu | | |

| How to Troubleshoot Dropped Search Engine Rankings | | 2008-01-11 15:19:00 | | Are you baffled about a recent drop in your search engine rankings? Do you know where to start and get a handle on what the problem might be and how to remedy it? One option to consider is using search engine forums as a resource. They are full of questions from people who have experienced similar situations and are great resources for an answer or two. But let’s say you really want to get to the bottom of the problem and you want to do it yourself. The following are some of the beginning steps StepForth takes when evaluating dropped rankings.Retrace Your StepsWrite a list of everything that anyone has done to your site within the past 3 weeks. Now look for anything that could have negatively impacted your content, site structure, or the reliability of your URLs. Once you write down the course of events the answer might pop right out at you. Here are some common situational culprits:You just moved your website to a different hosting provider: did your site experience much, if any, downtime during the switch over? Quality hosting companies will allow you to setup your site on their servers before the switch takes place so that downtime is minimized if not removed entirely. If a search engine happened to visit your site while it was down there is a small chance your rankings would be negatively affected but it will only happen for a short period. Once the search engine re-indexes your website everything should be back in order. The structure of your site has permanently changed: did you redirect the traffic from the old URLs to the new URLs using a 301 redirect? If not then you should. A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect which tells any visiting search engine to permanently change its index to reflect the new site structure.Contact your hosting company to check if your server has had any downtime recently. In most cases search engines will not drop your rankings if ... | | By: The SEO Blog | | |

| Protecting Your Search Engine Rankings | | 2007-12-01 09:33:12 | | Your website's ranking on search engines is a vital elementof your overall marketing campaign, and there are ways to improve your link popularity through legitimate methods.Unfortunately, the Internet is populated by bands of dishonest webmasters seeking to improve their link popularity by faking out search engines. The good news is that search engines have figured this out, and are now on guard for "spam" pages and sites that have increased their rankings by artificial methods. When a search engines tracks down such a site, that site is demoted in ranking or completely removed from the search engine's index. The bad news is that some high quality, completely above-board sites are being mistaken for these web page criminals. Your page may be in danger of being caught up in the "spam" net and tossed from a search engine's index, even though you have done nothing to deserve such harshtreatment. But there are things you can do - and things youshould be sure NOT to do - which will prevent this kind of misperception.Link popularity is mostly based on the quality of sites you are linked to. Google pioneered this criteria for assigning website ranking, and virtually all search engines on the Internet now use it. There are legitimate ways to go about increasing your link popularity, but at the same time, you must be scrupulously careful about which sites you choose to link to. Google frequently imposes penalties on sites that have linked to other sites solely for the purpose of artificially boosting their link popularity. They have actually labeled these links "bad neighborhoods."You can raise a toast to the fact that you cannot be penalized when a bad neighborhood links to your site;penalty happens only when you are the one sending out the link to a bad neighborhood. But you must check, and double-check, all the links that are active on your links page to make sure you haven't linked to a bad neighborhood. The first thing to check out is whether or not the pages you have ... | | By: Make Money Online : Tips from I Digg Anything | | |
