    2008-08-14 21:04:49
We got approval today to spend $800 on a new washer. Bart and I went tonight and we spent a bit more than that. It is only 4 days short of 2 full months since the guy came the first time to fix the washer. We have probably spent $400 at least on laundromat. But Saturday we will have a brand new washer and finally be able to start catching up on laundry. We have been saving bedding etc. and not taking it to the laundromat.I am super tired tonight again. Not sure waht is up. Going to go back to the Y in the morning and see if htat makes a difference...

Right now, you can earn a free $10 Sears gift card from AdPerk. If you are new to AdPerk, we've gotten several free magazines from them by watching short advertisements. It can take anywhere from 15-30 minutes to earn a typical freebie from AdPerk, so it is up to you to decide if this is worth the effort. However, the program is legit and will send you the freebie once you earn it. This $10 Sears Gift Card is the first non-magazine we've seen AdPerk offer, hopefully it will not be the last. UPDATE: It appears that some folks are being told this offer is available 'by invitation only'. Sorry if that is the case. Anyone that has already signed up for AdPerk before today should check their email to see if they got an invitation, we'll update you if we learn more. UPDATE 2: Thanks to Lindsay in the comments for letting us know this one is available even to new users, so if you are a Sears shopper, take advantage of this free Sears gift card! Anybody want to join me in ragging on Sears?
    2008-07-17 10:58:51
The washer still isn't fixed. The parts which they told us would be shipped on July 6th are backordered. WOn't ship until tomorrow or so they say ... and not arrive until the 25th. What is this 4 weeks? 5? I'm losing track.Getting the service agreement/warranty with sears is actually costing us money instead of saving it. We now have spent probably enough at the laundromat to have purchased a whole new washer.Every time I think about this, it makes my blood boil. Kind of like the ferret. But now the ferret is gone. The washer, however, is not. It is still here. And it still doesn't work. And tomorrow I'm going to have to go back to the laundromat.

    Sears Philippines Call Center Complaint
    2008-05-08 13:40:00
I found this article written by a frustrated customer via my Google mail which I had alert for the keywords "Philippines Call Center." This I did so that I can keep up with what's going on with the call center industry in the Philippines. Click on the image, if you have trouble reading the text. The customer, a lady who had a problem with her Kenmore refrigerator happened to reach a call center in the Philippines servicing Kenmore appliances and was extremely disappointed on how she was dealt with.Notable in this woman's complain was how the agents argued with her about her warranty. The agents claim she only had 1 year when in fact she had 5. On her third try to speak with an agent, the customer service rep verified with the marketing department that indeed had a longer warranty.Common mistake? Yes. Avoidable? Definitely. It took three people just to clarify the situation which was just half the battle for the customer.Lesson to be taken: Study the situation first and reasonably argue

    Bruce Berkowitz Discusses Sears Holdings
    2008-03-02 12:43:00
Bruce Berkowitz of the Fairholme fund discusses his rational for owning Sears Holdings in a recent U.S. News and World Report article title 'A Portfolio Warren Buffett Would Love'. Although I'm focusing on the Sears part of the article, I recommend clicking the link to read the full article. One of your largest holdings, Sears, has seen its stock price fall by about half over the past year. Do you think Chairman Edward Lampert can turn things around? I think that he's going to do it. And it's very reminiscent of what happened with Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway in the early days. If you play back the tape, Warren Buffett bought into Berkshire Hathaway, a textile mill, and he took many years to try and turn it around. He had deep respect for the employees; he really gave it his best shot. And then when he realized it wouldn't work, he then started to redeploy the assets and the free cash that was coming out of this industry that was destined to die. And that's how Berkshire Hathaw

    Fairholme Discusses Sears Holdings
    2008-02-01 21:50:00
The Fairholme Fund discusses Sears Holdings and Lampert in the current annual report."Sears Holdings is a relatively new, core position that continues to cost the Fund. Store traffic has been weak given stressed consumers and the company’s greaterexposure to depressed housing markets than most. Many despair that Sears seems unable to regain past retail glory, despite a conservative balance sheet and many valuable assets. In searching for instant gratification, most are missing key points. As with Warren Buffett in the late 1990s, many believe Eddie Lampert’s investment skills have faded — but it is just as unlikely that this leopard has lost his spots."The whole report is worth reading if you want a sense of Bruce Berkowitz's investing style.

Sears Set To Change Business Structure
    2008-01-19 22:41:00
Sears Holdings reported late Friday that it will create a new business structure which will will provide operating businesses with "greater control, authority and autonomy."According to The Wall Street Journal: "The contemplated restructuring would create separate units to manage Sears's real-estate holdings and brands such as Kenmore, Diehard, and Craftsman." The separate units would be overseen by a group of executive advisers. Based on this announcement, Lampert next step appears to be tapping into the value of the brands which sooner or later will include the real estate.Lampert has described Sears Holdings as a "start-up, and like all start-ups we should expect to experience rapid changes as well as our share of both challenges and successes." Yes, Sears shareholders have experienced a ton of pain as of late but like all start-ups, a big key is patience. The good news is that unlike most "start-ups", Sears has a lot of untapped value which will eventually efficiently generate cash

Sears Holdings Offers $6.75/share for Restoration Hardware
    2007-11-26 20:47:00
Sears Holdings (SHLD) has offered $6.75/share for Restoration Hardware (RSTO) which has topped an earlier bid of $6.70/share made by a Catterton Partners affiliate. Restoration Hardware's Chairman, President and CEO, Gary Friedman is tied to the transaction through Catterton which may be the reason Restoration is reluctant to hand over confidential information regarding the company. Sears sent the following letter to Restoration Hardware on November 23:Dear Mr. Hemmig:We are disappointed that our numerous requests to receive confidential information have not yet been granted by the Special Committee of the Board of Directors (the “Special Committee”) of Restoration Hardware, Inc. (the “Company”). As you know, we have sought such information to enable us to determine whether to submit a binding proposal to acquire the Company on terms superior to the insider buyout contemplated by the Agreement and Plan of Merger (the “Current Merger Agreement”), dated as of November 8, 2007, among the Company, Home Holdings, LLC, and Home Merger Sub, Inc.As you know we have been discussing the terms of a confidentiality agreement with you and your advisors and in this regard you have asked us to provide you with a proposal to acquire the Company. While we do not understand your requirement that we submit such a proposal prior to providing us with due diligence information during the “go shop” period, we are prepared to inform you that, based on the public information currently available to us, we would be prepared to enter into an agreement to offer your stockholders $6.75 per share in cash via tender offer. We would contemplate entering into a merger agreement on terms substantially similar to the Current Merger Agreement, modified as necessary to accommodate the tender offer structure and with a lower, more reasonable break-up fee than contained in the Current Merger Agreement. We believe that this proposal, if agreed, would provide a compelling opportunity for yo

    Sears tests 'vignettes' in Cincinnati
    2007-11-25 21:40:00
This article from 'The Cincinnati Enquirer' shows another example of Lampert's commitment to revamping stores and trying new concepts to create a turnaround rather than the anticipated diversification of assets. This isn't to say to that diversification away from retail will never happen but recent events such as the Restoration Hardware stake and the transformation of Kmart to Sears indicates the focus is on store operations. From the article:Three Sears stores here - Eastgate, Florence and Tri-County - have a new look and mission and just in time for the holidays. Elements of the approach, called Solutions Centers, may one day be rolled out to the retailer's hundreds of other full-line stores in North America. Officials plan to track sales trends through all of 2008 before making any judgment."We are offering a value proposition for the kitchen, laundry, garage, kid's room - vignettes or settings for every price range," Buchanan said. "This is a test-and-learn environment." The company hopes the new approach will resonate with home renovation do-it-yourselfers, who may want a sneak peak at what the rooms will look like before they invest hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

    Sears Speculation Continues
    2007-10-06 18:58:00
As Sears climbed from about $125 to $149.24 last week, speculation surrounding a Sears acquisition has heated back up. From Barron's: "Circuit City (CC) shares are higher on rumors that Searrs (SHLD) rescuer Eddie Lampert may be interested in the company.""This is not the first time this idea of Lampert buying the electronics retailer has popped up; Chad Brand of the Peridot Capitlist blogged about this idea back in June."Also, the SunTimes.com has released an article speculating on a Macy's (M). Thanks to ConcentratedValue.com for discovering the article. From the SunTimes: "Lampert could respond by teaming up with Steven Roth of Vornado Realty Trust to take over Macy's department-store chain -- a recurring rumor that most recently pushed up Macy's share price on Sept. 14, said Davidowitz, chairman of Davidowitz & Associates, a New York-based retail consulting and investment banking firm. Vornado has reportedly been interested in making a bid for Sears Holdings since 2005

    The Harder Side of Sears
    2007-09-29 17:10:00
In picking a new CFO from the banking industry, hedge-fund manager Eddie Lampert places an emphasis on a finance department driven by hard data and quantititive analysis.Sears Holdings has named J. Miles Reidy as CFO. Reidy, who comes to the retailer from a long finance career in the banking industry, will begin his new job in October. It is not immediately clear why Sears turned to someone with an extensive banking background to run a retail operation, but, in announcing his hire, the company emphasized Reidy's strong reliance on quantitative analysis."Miles has built and led highly quantitative, analytical finance organizations," said acting CFO William C. Crowley, who is also chief administrative officer and a member of Sears' board of directors. "We have asked Miles to bring to Sears Holdings this rigorous approach to testing and creating value through data-driven decisions."Read Full Article: CFO.com by Stephen Taub

Sears Takeover of Macy's SpeculationThe Sears (SHLD) takeover rumors are heating up again with Macy's being the target of speculation this time around."Now investors are speculating that Lampert, a billionaire hedge-fund operator who acquired Kmart in 2003 and Sears, Roebuck and Co. in 2005, might be involved, according to the Associated Press. ""The takeover rumor was doing the rounds a couple of weeks ago," Andrew Wilkinson, senior market analyst at Interactive Brokers Group, told the AP. 2007-06-05 03:43:00
Sears On The Bargain RackMorningstar.com labeled Sears (SHLD) a bargain."What the Market Is Missing: While Sears is focused on improving profits and sales at its Kmart and Sears stores, Picciola continues to believe this is more than just a retail turnaround story. Given the presence of Lampert, who has an exceptional record of making money, Picciola believes it is prudent for our valuation to look beyond the cash flows generated from the retail business and consider other factors, like the company's real estate assets and the cash available for investing. The market, it seems, is either overly fixated on the state of the retail business, or is discounting the value that could ultimately be attributable to the company's real estate or Lampert's investments of the firm's cash."
