| Ad Wars: Republican Senator Embraces Obama | | 2008-06-25 10:03:12 | | Check out our entire video library at Political Realm TV.Presidential Watch: John McCainMcCain's latest web video, "Words," hits Barack Obama for not following through on a commitment to publicly finance his general election campaign.Gubernatorial Watch: MissouriTreasurer Sarah Steelman continues her negative attacks in two new ads. Steelman is positive for half of "Missouri First," talking about her work to create jobs and limit spending. The ad then turns negative, attacking Republican rival Kenny Hulshof's spending record. I'm not sure how effective the ad really is--it's as if the campaign can't decide the message they want to send, so they crammed as many blanket phrases in as possible, creating a really disjointed commercial.Steelman continues to attack Hulshof's spending in "Ed and Orville." The ad hits Hulshof for voting for various earmarks while in Congress. This ad is far more effective. It has a clear message and an interesting delivery.Senate Watch: ColoradoDemocratic | | By: Political Realm | | |

| Arizona Voters to Recall Senator McCain? | | 2008-05-22 14:12:05 | | Most amusing concept ever? Here's a plea to the Arizona voters to Recall John McCain, which would be just down right funny, but... it might also give a phenomenal long shot chance for Dr. Ron Paul to be tapped for the Republican nomination for US President.
The Revolution is heating up and Senator John McCain now finds himself at war with his own party. In particular, the Ron Paul r3volution!
It is my idea to start a recall petition drive against McCain, within his home state of Arizona; as a RINO (republican in name only) McCain cannot, should not, and will not be the standard barer for the Republican Party.
Please Start the Recall Petition process to remove McCain as Arizona's US Senator...

| | Senator Cardin's Homebuyers Credit More of the Same Terrible Tax Policy | | 2008-04-03 23:00:00 | | It's pretty ironic that there appears to be such widespread support in the United States Senate for expanding tax preferences for housing (see most recent Cardin press release which will be voted on today), yet such widespread opposition in almost every policy research organization in Washington, whether conservative or liberal. The Heritage Foundation opposes expanding tax preferences for housing. Howard Gleckman of the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, yesterday wrote a terrific blog post explaining why they are bad tax policy. Dean Baker of the left-of-center Center for Economic and Policy Research opposes them. Of course, the Tax Foundation opposes all tax preferences for housing.Maybe those of us in our "ivory towers" just don't understand how tax policy affects housing, while these members of Congress are the true policy experts. | | South Carolina State Senator Seeks Tax on Pornography to Fight Sex Offenders | | 2008-04-02 23:00:00 | | Just when you thought policymakers (and some in the voting public) could not get any dumber when it comes to tax policy, you see this article and the quotes from citizens discussing a proposed tax on pornography in South Carolina. Here's what the bill's sponsor, Republican State Senator Mike Fair, had to say in support of his measure: "Just as we're trying to do with cigarettes, we have tried to do and continue to try to do with alcohol, is lets the users of those products pay for some of the consequences that come from that."The problem is that Fair's quote is totally wrong in several ways. First, with regard to cigarettes, the tax in almost every jurisdiction (when the federal tax is included) exceeds the negative external costs that the smokers are actually putting on the rest of society. Second, Fair asserts, with no proof, that pornography imposes a negative externality on society in the form of increased child molestation.&n | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |

Kerry proclaims Vectrix a vehicle of the future | | 2008-03-19 18:42:50 | | Senator Kerry usually likes to drive his Harley-Davidson Wide Glide when he feels the need for the wind in his bouffant and bugs in his teeth. (Ok, I made that last one up.) He reportedly did proclaim the bike a "vehicle of the future." Whether or not there was an electric scooter in his future went unstated. What I'm sure really got his audience excited was his discussion of potential future federal tax incentives for zero-emissions vehicles. | | US Senator 22-inch Chrome Rims Stolen | | 2008-03-18 12:32:00 | | If you did not hear about this a couple of months back, let this story be a cautionary tale on protecting your expensive custom wheels and tires. Anyone can get their wheels stolen at any time, so the best thing to do is make sure that you have wheel locks on each of your wheels. While this will not prevent someone from stealing your car, this will prevent them from stealing your wheels.
This is exactly what happened to Don Perata (D - Oakland). The Senator was driving his Senate-owned 2006 Dodge Charger set with 22-inch chrome wheels and a Candy Apple Red paint job when he was startled by a man knocking on his window... with a gun. The jacker instructed him to get out of the car. Perata was shaken up but otherwise fine.
Since the story broke a couple of months ago, the Senator's car was recovered. Surprisingly enough, it still had the wheels because each wheel had a wheel lock that the preps could not get off the wheels. As a woman I do not respect Senator Hillary Clinton and the reason I don't is that I feel she does not send the correct message to ANY women on this planet, since she has (and still is) enabling an abuser of women. How ironic (and phony) that this abuser of women, who we all know to be the former U.S. President Bill Clinton, of course, is out there doing his utmost to trumpet his wife's presidential ambitions, which I believe that she herself had set her sights on while she was speaking to us as First Lady. In MY personal opinion, part of the reason that she finds herself trailing behind Barack Obama in many states is due to the damage inflicted upon voters' ears by the sour notes that are sounding from that particular trumpet. | | | Clinton Calls Being First Lady “More Experience” Than Being a State Senator | | 2008-01-12 00:12:40 | | Hillary Clinton realized after Iowa that people were in fact looking for change, not necessarily experience. Senator Clinton is now, of course, calling herself a candidate that can bring change. While campaigning in Nevada, the next Democratic primary state, Hillary is trying to tell voters that she is both the candidate of change and experience. Senator Clinton told voters that she thinks being married to the president gives her more experience than being an elected state-senator. “He was a part-time state senator for a few years, and then he came to the Senate and immediately started running for president. And that's his prerogative. That's his right. But I think it is important to compare and contrast our records.” Senator Clinton did do some great things as first lady, do not get me wrong, but whoever said that qualified her to BE president herself? Senator Clinton also referred to Obama’s time in the legislator as “a few years”. Let’s get this straight, it was 8 years that Barack Obama served in the Illinois State Senate, not “a few years”. Clinton also referred to Obama’s Senate work as “part-time”. Illinois General Assembly is not defined as a full-time legislator by name but the amount of work they do places them in the category of full-time. According to the Citizen Research Council of Michigan, a full-time legislator is, “defined as those in which legislators spend 80 percent or more of the time required by a full-time job on attending legislative sessions, committee work, studying issues, assisting constituents, and campaigning for election.” The Citizen Research Council categorizes Illinois as a full-time legislator. Senator Clinton not only lied about Obama serving in a “part-time” legislator, but she also intentionally downplayed the number of years he served there for her personal gain. Clinton also said that Obama “immediately started running for president” once he was elected to the U. | | By: The Mersman Political Blog
| | Pennsylvania State Senator Seeks Porn Tax | | 2008-01-07 00:00:00 | | In what appears to be a growing trend, one state senator in Pennsylvania is seeking to impose a tax on adult entertainment services, arguing that such a tax would "remediate the harm they are doing in communities." More from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:On the heels of a new Allegheny County levy on poured drinks, a McCandless state senator is pitching another sin tax -- this one on strip clubs, escort services and pornography sellers. Republican Sen. Jane Orie said Friday that she will ask the Senate to approve a resolution asking the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee to study the possibility of a 10 percent excise tax on adult-oriented businesses. She said a tax would "remediate the harm they are doing in communities." This year Texas has enacted a $5 admission fee -- which some are calling a "pole tax" -- on strip clubs. Hutchison, now in her third full term in the Senate, told Texas Monthly magazine that stepping down in two years "has to be considered." Her comments were confirmed by spokesman Matt Mackowiak. "Is it better for Texas for me to leave early and give someone else a chance to start building seniority before the class of 2013? I think it probably is," Hutchison said. Excerpts of the interview were posted Monday on the magazine's "State of Mine" feature written by editor Evan Smith.First let me come clean: I have no love for Kay Bailey Hutchison. She was a rubber stamp Republican for W (save for on immigration issues in which she was a hard liner), she voted for the war and then repeatedly voted against expanding VA facilities in Texas, and her office sent out some really snarky responses whenever I contacted them about various issues of import to me. In fact I supported Barbara Ann Radnowksy during the last election just on the off chance she'd oust Hutchison. In my opinion Texas (and America) need fewer Hutchinsons and more leaders that will look at all sides of an issue and vote for their constituents best interests rather than their party's. I'm glad to see her go. But I'm not gloating... nope....not gloating at all.

Hey, Larry, we exchanged glances in the men's bathroom in Union Station last year. Initially, I thought I was imagining that you were cruising me, but after recent "revelations" in the news of your bathroom cruising prowess, I *knew* it was you!
Too bad I didn't understand what you were doing when I was taking a crap in a bathroom stall while you nervously were pacing outside my stall door and periodically peeking inside.
I should've known you were cruising me when you then sat in the stall next to mine and kept moving your foot into my stall and tapping it. I just figured you were trying to squeeze a big poop out and were having trouble with it and you were squirming about ha ha.
And then when you reached under our stall divider and flailed your hand about a few times, I figured you were just having a momentary epileptic seizure.
I'm sorry I was so dense and unaware of the ways and signals of bathroom cruising. If I had realized you were cruising me, we could've had some HOT sex. You could've spanked me while you told me that I was a "naughty, naughty bad boy" (just like you said Bill Clinton was in 1999 on "Meet the Press").
SIDEBAR --> On January 24, 1999, during the Clinton impeachment, Senator Craig told Tim Russert on Meet the Press: "The American people already know that Bill Clinton is a bad boy, a naughty boy. I'm going to speak out for the citizens of my state, who in the majority think that Bill Clinton is probably even a nasty, bad, naughty boy."
But since we had a missed connection, I guess I can only leave such thoughts as fantasy, only to hopefully be realized as reality someday :)

Senator Kohl made a stop in La Crosse today, renewing his call for a nationwide system of background checks aimed at preventing elder abuse. Wisconsin is currently part of a seven-state pilot program responsible for doing background checks on applicants to senior care facilities. Kohl hopes taking the program to national level will prevent elder abuse nationwide, and strengthen the current efforts in Wisconsin.Last year in Wisconsin alone almost ten thousand applicants were screened before they were hired by long-term care facilities, two hundred sixty-five of those applicants were denied because of a history of neglect or abuse. "During the pilot program over the last three years, in 7 states, 5000 people were identified as people we didn't want to employ, and would have otherwise been employed. | | Can outcome of Emery’s arbitration hearing determine his (or Heatley’s) fate as a Senator? | | 2007-07-23 05:59:51 | | Erin Nicks of the Ottawa Sun wonders if the Ottawa Senators would cut ties with restricted free agent goalie Ray Emery if the club does not feel comfortable with the contract he will receive at an arbitration hearing on Tuesday.

Should Emery receive a two-year deal at $4 million per or more, it’s possible that the Senators may be forced to let their number one goalie go.
Why? It’s simple.
Next off-season, the Senators will have five RFAs (including forward Jason Spezza) and three unrestricted free agents (including All-Star forward Dany Heatley) to re-sign. Speculation is already mounting that Heatley could garner as much as $10 million per season. And Spezza, well, he won’t come cheap either.

Herb Kohl has renewed his call for a nationwide system of background checks to identify applicants with criminal histories before they are hired by long-term care facilities."I want to stop the scourge of elder abuse and put in place a system that can be used across the country to prevent" mistreatment, Kohl said at a packed listening session Wednesday. Kohl and New Mexico Republican Sen. Pete Domenici introduced the Patient Safety and Abuse Prevention Act last month and are seeking more supporters. The Elder Justice Act, the first comprehensive federal legislation designed to reduce elder abuse, neglect and exploitation, is also under consideration now in the Senate.Legislative attempts to address abuse of the elderly as a pervasive national problem have been ongoing for years, said Robert Blancato of the Elder Justice Coalition in Washington and | | By: Elder Abuse

The hearing will be centered on the need for, and the benefits of, S. 1577, the Patient Safety and Abuse Prevention Act of 2007. This bipartisan bill, introduced by Chairman Kohl and Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM) last month, would establish a nationwide system of background checks to prevent those with criminal histories from working within long-term care settings. | | Schaefer a Bruin, Donovan a Senator | | 2007-07-18 02:14:51 | | As reported earlier on Tuesday by TSN, the Ottawa Senators have send forward Peter Schaefer to the Boston Bruins in exchange for veteran forward Shean Donovan.
The move is essentially a salary dump by the Senators, clearing about $1.175 million in salary cap space. Schaefer has a $2.1 million, while Donovan counts for $925,000 against the cap.
However, the trade also gives the Senators cap relief long-term. Schaefer’s contract expires after the 2009-10 season, while Donovan becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the upcoming season.

| | Surgeon replaces deceased Senator | | 2007-06-22 15:48:00 | | Tragically, Senator Craig Thomas, a Republican from Wyoming, died nearly 3 weeks ago after being diagnosed with leukemia. Today, Governor Freudenthal temporarily appointed orthopedic surgeon John Barrasso to fill the vacant Senate seat and has today done so. Since both the late Senator and the newly appointed Senator belong to the Republican party, the fragile, delicate balance of power in the Senate has been preserved.A CLASSIC CONSERVATIVEBarrasso has said that he believes "in limited government, lower taxes, less spending, traditional family values, local control and a strong national defense." That's good news for me and other conservatives, although he could very well be alienated from the American people, like many in Washington already are. He also seems poised to respect the wishes of the residents of Wyoming, with a long list of contributions to the state under his name.AN UNEXPECTED ELECTION A special election has been scheduled and set for November 2008 to determine who will finish Thomas' term, which finishes in 2013. Incumbent Sen. Barrasso actually intends to win the seat in his own right in that election. Whoever the voters choose to fill the seat will assume office simultaneously with the 111th congress. | | By: Washington in the Spotlight | | |

| | Senator Palpatine: SCEE Boss On 20 & 80GB Models For Europe | | 2007-06-11 16:24:32 | |
With one million PS3s out in the wild, and over two million games sold, SCEE boss David Reeves is in a buoyant mood. And when he’s buoyant, he’s talkative, especially when it comes to the subject of the 20 and 80GB models of the PS3. And how neither are likely to be seen in Europe.
I can confirm that it’s highly unlikely that the 20Gb version will be launch in PAL territories. The majority of retailers are happy that we launched with just the one unit. It has made things simple for them.As for the 80Gb console, there are markets like Korea where there’s very high broadband penetration and the people there are used to downloading content, so they require a certain size hard drive. But at the moment we don’t see a requirement for launching this version in Europe. Certainly not in the foreseeable future.
The 20GB, it was expected. Thanks for coming. But those comments on the 80GB model…less so. 80’s not much bigger than 60, David, s | | By: Information Popular Technologies Review

The bill would prevent those with criminal histories from working within long-term care settings by establishing a nationwide system of background checks. This new system would coordinate abuse and neglect registries with state law enforcement registries, and also add a federal component to the background check by cross-referencing potential employees with the FBI’s national database of criminal history records. | | Senator Kohl Decries Deceptive And Confusing Sales Practices Of Medicare Advantage Plans, Vows Continued Oversight By Committe | | 2007-05-17 14:40:00 | | PRESS RELEASE May 16, 2007Spurred by Hearing, Industry Promises to Improve Training of Insurance AgentsWASHINGTON – At a hearing held today by the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging, Chairman Herb Kohl (D-WI) challenged the sales and marketing practices employed by insurance agents selling Medicare Advantage plans. Medicare Advantage plans, which are private plan options offered to Medicare beneficiaries as an alternative to traditional Medicare, now account for nearly 20 percent of total Medicare plans and are an increasingly profitable enterprise for many corporate providers. The Committee’s investigation has uncovered such questionable sales practices as removing seniors from traditional Medicare without their knowledge, signing seniors up for plans they cannot afford, and misleading seniors regarding which physicians and hospitals accept the plan.
