| Thirty Three U.S. Senators Voted Against Making English the Official Language of the United States-Truth! But Misleading! | | 2008-08-18 04:33:00 | | eRumor:The forwarded email is in the form of a letter from "Colonel Harry Riley USA ret" criticizing 33 Senators for voting against making English the official language of the U.S.eTruth: The vote was in May, 2006 in the United States Senate and was for The Comprehensive Immigration and Reform Act of 2007.An amendment to the bill was added just days before the vote that would have declared English as the official language of the United States and, among other things, would mean that the government would not have to provide services in any language other than English. One of the purposes of the amendment was to "promote the patriotic integration of prospective U.S. citizens."The bill was defeated by a vote of 61 to 34 with 4 not voting. So it isn't accurate to say that the "no" votes of the Senators was about making English the official language of the United States. | | | Senators could face tumultuous times next summer | | 2007-08-02 16:46:59 | | Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun reports that the Ottawa Senators could be facing some drastic changes next summer.

The Senators will have five players set to become unrestricted free agents, including forwards Dany Heatley, Mike Fisher, Chris Kelly, and Shean Donovan as well as defenseman Wade Redden. With forward Jason Spezza a pending restricted free agent, the Senators will have a large core of their team to re-sign in a year’s time.
The fear in Ottawa is that they will not have the funds to retain their key UFAs, especially their back-to-back 50-goal scorer, Heatley. More than that, with the Edmonton Oilers going on an offer-sheet binge this off-season, teams may follow suit and do the same with Spezza.
“There’s only one team that has made offer sheets, but yes, a guy like Jason is certainly a candidate for that,” said Senators GM Bryan Murray.

| | Re-signing free agents tops priority list for Senators | | 2007-07-18 03:52:35 | | After clearing about $1.175 million in salary cap space by trading Peter Schaefer to the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, the Ottawa Senators are said to be working on locking up their key free agents to long-term contracts, reports TSN.
Senators GM Bryan Murray will first focus on re-signing staring goalie Ray Emery, forward Chris Kelly, and defenseman Christoph Schubert for the upcoming season. All three players are restricted free agents and all are scheduled for salary arbitration.
Emery’s hearing is set for for next Tuesday in Toronto, where it’s expected that “no matter what happens he’ll get a big raise over the US$925,000 he earned last season.”
As for Kelly, negotiations with his camp are also progressing slowly.
“I actually talked to Kelly’s agent last night,” said Murray. “We’re going to talk again tomorrow. We hope that we can resolve it, but again, the numbers as comparables at this point seem to make them think they | | By: Rumor Me This
| | Senators initiate contract talks with Emery | | 2007-07-13 05:21:47 | | Toronto Sun’s Bruce Garrioch reports that the Ottawa Senators have stared negotiations on a new contract with restricted free agent goalie Ray Emery.
Senators GM Bryan Murray met with both Emery and his agent, J.P. Barry, on Wednesday. the two sides are working towards avoiding an arbitration hearing scheduled for July 24 in Toronto.
“We had good discussions and we’ve both agreed we’re going to try to do everything we can to avoid going the arbitration process if it all possible,” said Barry, co-managing director of CAA Sports.
“We’re just going to keep working at it,” said Barry.
It’s expected that Barry will use Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers and Rick DiPietro of the New York Islanders as comparable in the hopes of getting similar compensation for his client. Lundqvist just signed a one-year deal worth $4.25 million, while DiPietro was signed by the Islanders to a 15-year deal averaging $4.5 million, last season.

| | Senators GM fired? | | 2007-06-17 18:43:50 | | Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports that the Ottawa Senators will decide by “the end of the weekend” what will happen with the team’s General Manager, John Muckler.
In fact, speculation is that Muckler may have already been let go. According to Garrioch, owner Eugene Melnyk’s spokesman Ken Villazor did not deny that Muckler has been fired.
In a statement to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Melnyk says that he is “reviewing all management with the club.”
“We are continuing to have ongoing discussions with management on the future direction and therefore the roles of everyone at the senior level. We had a great year and I am very proud of what my team has achieved. Saying that, I am always evaluating what we can do, both short term and long term, to continue the momentum and lead us to a Stanley Cup victory next year and for years to come.”
However, Senators President Roy Mlakar tells the Sun that a decision on Muckler not been made yet.

| | Open Letter to Our Senators | | 2007-06-15 14:10:00 | | Honorable Senators;Today on June 15, people worldwide will join together to recognize the second annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was first declared last year by the World Health Organization and the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse. | | Senators to Revive Immigration Bill | | 2007-06-15 00:49:55 | |
WASHINGTON (AP) - Key senators tentatively agreed on a plan to revive a stalled immigration bill on Thursday, aided by President Bush’s support for a quick $4.4 billion aimed at “securing our borders and enforcing our laws at the work site.”
Officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said Republican and Democratic supporters of the bill were presenting their proposal to the Senate’s top two leaders, who in turn arranged an early evening meeting to discuss it.
Precise details to be presented to Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., were not disclosed.
In general, according to officials familiar with the discussions, Republicans and Democrats would each be accorded roughly a dozen chances to amend the measure, with the hope that they would then combine to provide the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster by die-hard opponents. The officials who described the emerging plan did so on condition of anonymity, saying the | | By: TexasFred's

Ophelia Ford Hospitalized After Bizarre Tirade
By Lucas L. Johnson II
Associated Press Writer
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WHBQ FOX13 myfoxmemphis.com) —
State Sen. Ophelia Ford was taken to a hospital by ambulance one day after delivering an angry, rambling tirade in a committee meeting, say Democratic lawmakers who were familiar with the incident.
Two Democratic lawmakers, who asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitive nature of the news, said Ford was taken to the hospital Tuesday, spent the night and was released Wednesday.
One lawmaker said Ford, D-Memphis, was weak “because she hasn’t been eating properly.” The legislator did not have any information on what was wrong with Ford specifically or what treatment she received.
