13% of Seniors Report Being Mistreated
    2008-08-29 05:45:00
(HealthDay News) -- A new study says that 13 percent of American seniors suffer mistreatment from various forms of abuse. The University of Chicago researchers said the chief forms were verbal abuse (9 percent), being taken advantage of financially (3.5 percent), and physical abuse (0.2 percent). The team also found that seniors with physical impairments were most likely to suffer verbal abuse."Older people with any physical vulnerability are about 13 percent more likely than those without one to report verbal mistreatment, but are not more likely to report financial mistreatment," study co-author Linda Waite, a professor of sociology, said in a university news release. The analysis of national survey data from 3,005 community-dwelling adults, ages 57 to 85, also found that adults in their late 50s and 60s are more likely to report verbal or financial mistreatment than those who are older."Perhaps the respondents are including fairly routine arguments, perhaps about money, with their spo

Experts Agree: Obama's Exempting Seniors from Income Tax is a Gimmick
    2008-08-11 23:00:00
An AP story posted yesterday analyzes one component of Sen. Obama's tax plan, which is to exempt all seniors who make less than $50,000 from having to pay federal income tax. The theme of the article is that tax policy experts agree it is bad tax policy. It's a gimmick, just like Sen. Obama (correctly) labeled John McCain's gas tax holiday. The article also explains how there would likely have to be an exemption of $50,000 with a phase-out of it, as opposed to a cliff at $50,000. This would undoubtedly lead to the provision having to cost more than has been estimated by Tax Policy Center because TPC's estimates assumed the cliff.Given Obama's support for this provision, the new DNC platform has reportedly adopted this as one of its planks (early drafts report). Speaking of which, much of the statements in the DNC platform regarding tax policy use rhetoric that sounds nice (like this one), but if you think about any of them for more

Seniors Advocates Explore Ways To Guard Against Elder Abuse
    2007-06-06 14:00:00
By Keith Vass The Chronicle British ColumbiaHow do you respond when an adult you know is being abused, taken advantage of or neglected?A legal workshop held Thursday aimed to help people who work with seniors or those who cannot tend to their own needs find the answer to that question.“It’s something the public is not aware of, it’s not something we talk about,” says Pat Edge, seniors coordinator at the Ladysmith Resources Centre Association.Abuse can take a variety of forms, from neglect, to physical, emotional and financial.Edge says even she had to go through a rude awakening about the reality of elder abuse.“I did not believe there was any abuse of seniors until I got involved in the community and talking to them.” more information on handling elder abuse, visit the Community Respone Network online at www.bccrns.ca, or call the Ladysmith Resources Centre 245-3079.

    Seniors and Sex

Back when I had a real job (which is a funny thing to say, because we often talked about quitting radio and getting a “real job”), the other women (who were all much younger) and I would discuss various men. Occasionally, the reaction would be “Eww, he’s so OLD!” and I’d have to admit that, ahem, he’s my age. Some young people might get grossed out by the thoughts of grandma gettin’ some, but I find the idea strangely comforting. If the elderly are having any sex, then they’re doing better than I am! So, OK, maybe I have something to look forward to. Or not. What’s scary is that there are so many elderly women compared to the number of elderly men, so guys, please, for my sake, take care of your health! Meet your local phone sex worker. (Thanks, Jan!) By RIANNA ROBINSONMembers of the law enforcement community, abuse experts and a state representative warned yesterday that mistreatment of senior citizens is a growing problem.Speaking at the Senior Citizens Center, the group discussed signs of abuse, prosecution of cases and ways state lawmakers are working to solve the problem.Marilyn Grove, director of the senior center, said the problem of elder abuse is something that is often overlooked."We're trying to raise awareness in the community," Grove said. "(Elder abuse) is one of those things where people want to deny that it happens, but it does.""Adult protective services continues to be a national disgrace," Baker said. " It's at the point where child protective services were about 40 years ago.""Our two biggest fears are change and death," Baker said. "Anytime you threaten to change a person's way of life, it scares them.""I value our senior community. I think they're an asset that should be celebrated," Bell said. "Taking adva

Florida Property Tax Cut: Only for Seniors for Now
    2007-04-10 07:00:00
The issue of property taxes is continuing to heat up in Florida. But before any major reform is done, Florida Governor Charlie Crist has cut property taxes for one select group: senior citizens. From the Orlando Sentinel:Gov. Charlie Crist on Monday signed into law a bill that will give low-income seniors a property-tax break. The measure (HB 333), which implements a constitutional amendment approved by voters last fall, increases the homestead exemption from $25,000 to $50,000 for residents 65 and older whose income does not exceed $23,414 in 2007."We have an obligation to provide our state's seniors the utmost respect and dignity," Crist said. "Unfortunately, high property taxes are forcing many seniors to choose which bills they can afford to pay. This legislation provides additional help to those who need it most and can help make living in Florida more affordable."Special property tax laws in favor of senior citizens are popular, but they are not a free lunc
