| Fewer seats, higher airfares cast a shadow over Hawaii | | 2008-05-09 19:19:00 | | Rising airfares and fewer flight choices could spoil some travelers' plans to visit Hawaii this summer.From June to August, airlines have scheduled 14% fewer seats than last year between the mainland USA and Hawaii, according to a USA TODAY analysis of flight schedules. The biggest cuts came about six weeks ago, when two passenger airlines went out of business — and prices jumped."There are fewer seats in the market, therefore the airlines are able to raise their prices," says Rex Johnson, CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Board.
