    Update on New Yeah Shanghai
    2008-05-06 08:38:00
We just went to New Yeah Shanghai New Yeah Shanghai last night for my dad's birthday. It was my favorite place for soup dumplings for a long time but the reign has ended. Sadly, the dough is now thicker, the meat a bit stiffer. The dough on the pork and chive dumplings has gotten too thick as well. The other dishes we got were mostly too salty but still meets the average Chinatown standard, which is pretty good. But in the end, without the super soup dumplings, Lon and I agreed, they were no longer special. You could eat anywhere in Chinatown for a similar meal.We asked the host on our way out if the chef or owner had changed. He told us that the chef was the owner and nothing had changed. Perhaps it was a fluke but none of use were convinced that it was really the same place. All five of us noticed a difference and each of us had eaten here so many times.Let's take a moment of silence for the fallen soup dumplings.

Shanghai housing market to stay weak
    2008-03-19 14:57:00
BEIJING, March 19 -- A seemingly unyielding "wait-and-see" approach among potential home buyers might depress the local housing market for a bit longer, industry insiders said yesterday."The market is still rather weak, and it might not be able to regain its strength as quickly as we had seen in previous years," Xue Jianxiong, head of research at Shanghai Youwin Real Estate Information Services, told Shanghai Daily. "Usually March is the month when transaction volume would begin to pick up quite significantly after the traditional slack January and February when Spring Festival usually falls."

    New Yeah Shanghai
    2008-01-08 06:58:00
We've blogged about New Yeah Shanghai New Yeah Shanghai Deluxe before, so I'll try to keep this one short and sweet, just wanted to share some pics this time.Their strong suit is really dumplings skins. The fresh handmade dough is perfectly chewy, not too thin and not too thick. We had Soup Dumplings (above, to the left), Pork and Chive Dumplings, and Vegetable Dumplings (right). I loved all three.Another dish we always order is the Crab, Sauteed with Minced Pork, Soy Beans, and Rice Cakes (shown left). This time the rice cakes were incredible.Fish Head Soup (shown right) is one of my favorite Shanghainese dishes. The flavor of the soup was rich, as it should be, and the tofu and mung bean noodle sheets are standard necessary ingredients. The size of the fish head was a bit smaller than what we've had at other restaurants though. My mother noticed a new dish posted on their board. Pork (with bone) wrapped in some sticky rice, then wrapped in bamboo leaves and steamed. I thought it was a wonderful twist on a traditional food called Dzong Dtz (which is kind of like a Chinese Tamale made with sticky rice).Ok, so the post wasn't that short but one more thing: we took a video of the Sizzling Beef and Scallop dish so you could see the sizzling.

    Shanghai - Quick Guide
    2007-11-28 13:36:00
Shanghai, a vigorous and energetic international metro-polis, welcomes people from all over the world to enjoy its special atmosphere. This modern metropolis with its rich heritage of ancient Chinese culture has much to see and do.The Oriental Pearl TV Tover is the modern symbol of Shanghai City. Standing beside the Huangpu River with a height of 468 meters (1536 feet), it is the tallest TV tower in Asia and the third highest in the world. This unusual structure that dominates the skyline is a great attraction to tourists. Nanjing Road is considered to be the "No. 1 commercial street in China". Here along its 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles), you will find over 600 shops that on average are visited by some 1.7 million people each day. If you like shopping, do not miss it!Yuyuan Garden is the largest of Shanghai's ancient gardens with architectural styles of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The garden has six areas, each with its own style. The Grand Rockery, in the center of the Garden, is the most renowned sight here. Shanghai Museum is a veritable treasure house of ancient Chinese art and houses 120,000 precious relics. Bronzes, pottery, paintings and calligraphies are distinctive features of the Museum's collection. Seen from above, the Museum resembles a large bronze mirror of the Han Dynasty (206BC -220). From the distance, it looks like a bronze Ding, an ancient cooking vessel that contains so many mementos of the 5,000-year-old history of Chinese civilization.Another sight not be missed is the Bund. Situated on the east bank of the Huangpu River, here, one can enjoy the bracing air and fine sunshine as well as seeing something of the many ac

Going To Shanghai To Chinese Grand Prix
    2007-09-20 09:31:00
As became the tradition, F1wolf and the gang will be shooting off to Shanghai in 2 weeks time for another weekend of racing and heavy partying. Some of you may be planning to go to Shanghai, here are our experiences from the past.First and most important – you have to realize that Shanghai is China and China is, well, China. Expect unexpected.Shanghai Track, picture: Shanghai CircuitUnless you live nearby and travel by train or bus, your port of entry will be Pudong airport (or Hongqiao if you fly in domestically from some destinations). Pudong Airport is state of the art airport, with not so state of the art facilities. As in most Chinese airports you can expect extremely overpriced restaurants and coffee shops with average or way below average quality of food. Do not be surprised by $10 for cup of coffee. So my suggestion is, get out of the airport quick. The airport is quite far away even from the Pudong area of Shanghai. Walking to your hotel is out of question. Unless somebody is

    Shanghai Property Back in Vogue
    2007-07-28 01:19:00
A government clampdown on construction of luxury apartments is combining with loose enforcement of limits on property investment by foreigners to send Shanghai property prices sharply higher after two years of stagnancy. The Shanghai government increased the tax on property sales in early 2005, following nearly three years in which hot money, looking to benefit from China's booming economic growth and a then-anticipated increase in the value of the yuan, poured into the luxury real-estate market. The stream of funds caused the price of some luxury apartments to soar. Since the tax increase was implemented, such prices have barely kept pace with inflation.

Terminal hell in Shanghai, with terrible regrets

SHANGHAI: You can't imagine how many flights there are in China until you've had the experience of waiting for a delayed plane at Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport, and the impression of abundance doesn't come from watching planes take off. China, a state run by engineers, is a builder's paradise, where almost no expense is spared for infrastructure. Lots of Chinese cities, including many the average reader may have never heard of, have smart airports of recent vintage and clean, well thought out design that compare favorably to their American and European counterparts.

    2007-07-14 19:51:00
Last night we hunted for our dinner. Unfortunately, the hunt didn't take place with spears in hand, through the forest; but rather with Vindigo (a foodie must-have) in hand, through the murky streets of Chinatown. Along for the hunt were our new friends Kate & Jesse. Jessica and I remember a wonderful place where we had eaten with her family and longed to return. We couldn't remember the name or the address, but knew they had great soup dumplings, a crappy-looking entrance way, and a bridge inside (which is not visible from the street). None of these are remotely helpful data. After not too long our "Toucan Sam" noses led the way and we found it, New Yeah Shanghai Deluxe New Yeah Shanghai Deluxe. We waited for five minutes and then were seated in the front section. We ordered quickly: Soup Dumplings, Sautéed Japanese Eggplant, Salt & Pepper Pork Chops, Steamed Whole Fish, and Sautéed Crab with Rice Cakes & Edamamé.The eggplant arrived first, it was perfectly cooked

    2007-06-23 00:45:00
BEIJING, June 22 -- Tomson Riviera, the most expensive apartment complex in Shanghai, is up against a crusade. But it is a crusade that is unlikely to help slow rising property prices, as authorities expect. It may, in fact, violate the principles of a market economy. The Shanghai Housing, Land and Resource Administration Bureau recently announced a probe into several luxury property projects, including Tomson Riviera, on the east bank of the Huangpu River.

But, at the end, it was a wet weekend, we do not have that many of those and who knows when I happen to be at a wet race again. And it was the last race win for Michael Schumacher. So here are some of the Shanghai GP 2006 pictures.Stay tuned, the next photos will come from Monaco.
