Hell on Earth – The Ship Breaking Yards of Alang and Chittagong
    2008-06-20 13:56:13
The ship breaking yards in Alang, India,  and in Chittagong, Bangladesh, are where more than half of the world’s old ships, oil tankers and ocean liners  go to be beached like huge whales, stripped, cut into pieces, and cannibalized for iron and steel to be used in building new ships. These hell holes are not just a killing ground for old vessels; thousands of hapless, but able-bodied young men have lost their lives doing back-breaking work in one of most hazardous working conditions in the world. Not only do they have to work without any basic safety equipment, they have to also endure prolonged exposure to toxic chemicals and waste matter during the course of work. Lung cancer and asbestosis is quite common among these poor souls. Visit this link to see some haunting photographs of decaying ships and desperate men, and also some information about them compiled from various sources. Lilly Tries to Right the Ship -- Cubs at Pirates : 12:35pm CDT / 1:35pm EDT
    2008-05-25 12:22:11
Ted Lilly, as has been well documented by his fan club, can dominate opposing batters in a way that makes you think he has special mind powers. In his last four starts, Mr. Lilly is 4-0 with a 3.55 ERA, striking out 31 and walking only six. Mind freakin' powers, baby. However, absent the win last night, the Pirates are a team that has proven to be very susceptible to such mind powers. Let's hope that Mr. Lilly decides to unleash his talent today. The Cubs need to forget that Jason Freakin' Bay's game-winning single was his first RBI single of the year. Lou should not forget that it was over a drawn-in outfield in the 14th inning. Good news is that Soriano's LCI (see my fine headlines below to see this new stat that Bruce Miles and I came up with) is rising, so maye he'll stop running like his lunch is making a return appearance. Another thing to remember: the Pirates haven't beaten the Cubs on back-to-back days since Sept. 4-5, 2006. Not that anyone should get

Mazda Destroys Thousands of Cars From Ship Mishap
    2008-05-20 15:43:00
Mazda Motor Corp., the Japanese carmaker controlled by Ford Motor Co., is destroying more than 4,000 new cars caught up in a shipping mishap in the Pacific two years ago, the Wall Street Journal reported. The carrier Cougar Ace, with 4,703 vehicles held securely in straps on board, developed a list in bad weather and drifted for several weeks, the newspaper said. The ship was eventually righted and Mazda, which said it didn't know whether the cars had been damaged, decided to build a ``disassembly' line in Portland, Oregon, where metals such as platinum are separated from catalytic converters, air bags are inflated and accessories such as CD players and alloy wheels are removed and destroyed, the Journal said. Finally the cars, worth an estimated $100 million dollars, are crushed and shredded, to be sent back to Japan for recycling into cars again, the newspaper said.

Travelers are looking to rejuvenate and invigorate their lives while experiencing relaxation and adventure. Purposeful pleasure is becoming increasingly popular. Cruise ships are catching on and riding the wave with their many enrichment programs. Some more than others. Special interest speakers provide a series of original presentations on destinations and topics of special interest to cruise guests. The Cruise Critic remarked of Grandeur of the Seas, launched in early 1996, one of Royal Caribbean's older vessels: "There's also no enrichment program (unless you count napkin folding and dollar origami), though that is fairly customary for Royal Caribbean in general." To Royal Caribbean's defense their International cruises do offer enrichment programs on the following - "Fun and unique" topics with a broad appeal, Culture and topics that relate to the cruise itinerary, Billiards, Anything "Behind the Scenes," History presented in a fun way, Journalism, Art, Mardi Gras, Sports, Theater/

She is 458.45 m (1,504 ft) in length and 68.9 m (226 ft) in width, making her the largest ship ever constructed (However, by gross tonnage measure, she is fifth, 236,710, behind the four Batillus class supertankers- 274,838-275,276 tons gross). She was built between 1979 and 1981, damaged during the Iran-Iraq War, and refloated in 1991, but is now used as an immobile offshore platform for the oil industry.SpecificationsKnock Nevis has 564,763 metric tons of deadweight (DWT) and a summer displacement of 647,955 t when laden with nearly 650,000 m³ (4.1 million barrels) of petroleum. Cruise Ship Vacations One Husband's Opinion
    2008-04-17 11:05:18
My wife and I go on a lot of cruises. It all started about 10 years ago when we got married. We honeymooned on the American Queen River Boat, a week long cruise up the Mississippi river. I must admit that was a fun trip. The boat could just pull up to the bank and drop a long gangway onto the levee and walk on or off...back then there was no security to go through... Our second cruise a year later was aboard the Crown Odyssey, a smaller older ship, on a cruise through the Greek islands. What a trip! I discovered that I love old Greek and Roman ruins, and Mediterranean food is fantastic! Kathy says Greece has the best tomatoes of anywhere in the world. We had a blast, visiting places like Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, and Istanbul. During that second cruise we built a website about the cruise and we would upload pictures and text to the site during our stops in port. We would find an internet café and do the uploading while sipping a cold drink. We have a photo on our site with Kathy sea

Humor jokes-Why is a ship called "She"
    2008-04-06 23:55:14
A ship is called "she" because there is always a great deal of bustle about her; there is usually a gang of men about', she has a waist and stays; it takes a lot of paint to keep her looking good; it is not the initial expense that breaks you, it is the upkeep; she can be all decked out; it takes an experienced man to handle her correctly, and without a man at the helm, she is absolutely uncontrollable. She shows her topsides, hides her bottom and, when coming into port, always heads for the buoys.

Carnival Pride Review Of a Wonderful Ship
    2008-04-04 13:07:25
There it was, the Carnival Pride, sitting majestically in port awaiting the arrival of the next group of guests to sail to the Mexican Riviera. I was pumped! I had been on cruises before but this was the first seven night cruise I had been on. I couldn't wait to board the ship and see our stateroom, and get started on our next adventure. We were setting sail out of Long Beach California for the Mexican Riviera. Our trip would take us to Puerta Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Cabo San Lucas. It was October and according to the Carnival website the weather down in Mexico would be beautiful. They were right. We had a Balcony Stateroom with an extended balcony and we were cruising with family who were in the staterooms next to ours. After some trying and signing agreements we were able to get the doors opened between balconies so we could all sit out together and relax and watch the ports come and go. I highly recommend getting a port side room when cruising, especially when you have a balcony room

After the air-powered car, here comes a wave-powered boat! The three-ton catamaran Suntory Mermaid-II is all set for its first voyage from Hawaii to Japan in May 2008. The primary... The Ship is Sinking in Milwaukee
    2008-02-08 21:22:00
While it may seem strange to panic when a team has a 16-5 record, but the Marquette Golden Eagles have some serious issues that need to be addressed if they are going to compete in March. Most of all, that major problem is consistency.Back in early December, the Eagles appeared to be a confident bunch, ready to take on anyone with their matured three-guard lineup. In the Maui Tournament they looked strong as, advancing to the finals against Duke. They were also finally able to defeat Wisconsin, this time at the Kohl Center. However, January has been a completely different story for the Eagles. Since January 6th, they are 5-4 with an average losing margin of just over 16 points. They lost by fifteen at West Virginia, by twenty at Louisville, and by sixteen at Connecticut. The other loss was by four against Duke in Maui, but that was in the early part of the season when the possibilities seemed wide open for one of the few teams that could go into the Kohl Center and beat Wisconsin. It is

    Course kit pulls ship
    2008-01-22 16:00:32
For world-wide first time, a modern cargo ship used also wind force as drive. In the North Sea on the ship MS Beluga SkySails, a system was taken in enterprise, with which an enormous course kite pulls the ship. The course kite unfolds over the nose of the freighter. It rises at its plastic cord on a height of 250 meters. Its traction power reaches three tons. The ship speed reaches thereby nearly four knots. Thus now predominantly the kite pulls the steamer. Whether the technology even with larger wind forces functioned must be however still tested.

Cruise Ship Experiences-Tired Of The Same Old Ports? Go Small.
    2007-09-11 23:14:41
While reading the local cruise and travel news this week, it dawned on me that there are an abundance of sales out there, and most are for ships that always go the “standard” ports, like San Juan, St. Thomas, Cozumel, or Jamaica. Even in the European markets, you basically have London, Copenhagen, Rome and Venice. Have you ever thought about one day visiting a small, quaint village instead of a large city with ruins or a bazaar resplendant with tee-shirts and marguaritas? Instead of a 120,000 ton super liner that takes an hour to dock, how about a river cruise along the Danube or paddle-wheeler down a North American river visiting towns you’ve only read about in history books? If this appeals to you, here are some ideas you may want to look into.

    Ship Shape TV
    2007-09-10 04:56:57
I mentioned a source of back episodes one time before, but realized that I never really referred to the show. John Greviskis is the host of this cable series. Each episode is 30 minutes and covers various boat building, repair and upkeep issues. They usually have a "project" to detail which is based around a certain manufacturer's products. They will have product experts showcase the materials used. Factory tours and various "behind the scenes" clips are often interesting. Sometimes things are geared a bit "simple" or are a bit sales oriented for my taste, but I've learned of several products I didn't know were available, and often the advertising is as informative as the show :-) Check their web page for show times and channels in your area.

$20K "Quick Ship" Bonus--How Much is Your Life Worth?
    2007-08-16 17:02:54
In a move that's sure to suck in more desperate, poverty-stricken recruits, the Army is offering a big new incentive package. If you join up and ship out to basic training within 30 days, they'll pay you $20,000. I'm disgusted. The message to kids my age from poor regions is, "Hey, you can either live your life in squalid, abject poverty, or you can risk life." In a lot of ways, this is worse

How the Ship of State Became the Ship of Fools
    2007-08-12 01:18:18
Via The Existentialist CowboyThe US has caught a nasty virus the symptom of which is running punditry. It's like cruise ship diarrhea without the satisfaction at the end of ordeal or even panic. Some quick notes: Barack Obama is the most shallow, non-descript, boring politician to ever come down the pike --an intellectual lightweight whose soul has been coached out of him by media consultants. In Barack Obama, I find the vacuous echoes of Ronald Reagan, a previous lightweight who had mastered the art of reading buzzwords off a cue card. My skin crawls.I have stopped listening to what passes for debate these days. It's become a matter of stringing meaningless platitudes together such that they sound like real human speech. Or is it a Japanese robot?More quick notes: I wish John Edwards were uglier. Hillary Clinton is damaged goods. Ron Paul, still a Republican, has many more scales to shed before he can change his repitil..uh...Republican skin.God help us --the only intelligent politi

    Ship Flowers World Wide
    2007-07-30 21:42:21
When I was a teenager I had pen pals.  This was back before anything like the internet ever crossed my mind at all.  Computers were something rich kids had and they played games on them or something people if office buildings had.  Not kids like me.  So I had pen pals.  I had a friend in Philadelphia.  She was 2 years younger than me and unfortunately she got very very sick.  She developed cancer of the Laranyx and was put into the hospital.  She couldn’t speak after the tumor was removed.   She was 14 years old.  I can remember that i really wanted to send her flowers but had no idea as to where to begin to find a flower shop in Pa. About 5 years ago I had a friend on the internet.  She lived in the UK.  Her dad developed a brain tumor and after he died she became very depressed.  I wanted to send her flowers also but couldn’t.  How was I supposed to find a flower shop in the UK to send flowers from. 2flowers.com allows you to send flowers to anyone anywhere

"Go grab Noriega, pull him out of his cell, ship him over there and give him Saddam Hussein's old uniform."
    2007-06-27 04:57:00
If that's not a campaign slogan, I don't know what is!Brad Thor, New York Times bestselling author of the upcoming novel The First Commandment and soon-to-be Radio Happy Hour guest on Tuesday July 10th, has drawn the ire of many after he suggested the installation of jailed former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega as dictator of Iraq on an appearance last week on Glenn Beck's TV show.See the video of Brad Thor's appearance on Glenn Beck's program.Thor went on to say, "We need a dictator back in that country. That's all those people respond to. The Arab world is so messed up, they can't -- you can't give people democracy. They have to earn it. So let's put our own strongman in there like we did with the shah, and let's -- let's make it work."While it was clear to me that it was said tongue-in-cheek, I say, let's not close off that idea yet. Back on February 23, 2006 I suggested putting Saddam back in charge for the same reasons. While that's impossible now, perhaps one o
