| Men vs. Women vs. the Short Story | | 2008-03-06 22:56:00 | | Remember the book "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus"? Well, here's a prime example offered by an English professor at Southern Methodist University: In-class Assignment for Wednesday: Today we will experiment with a new form called the tandem story. The process is simple. Each person will pair off with the person sitting to his other immediate right. One of you will then write the first paragraph of a short story. The partner will read the first paragraph and then add another paragraph to the story. The first person will then add a third paragraph, and so on back and forth. Remember to re-read what has been written each time in order to keep the story coherent. The story is over when both agree a conclusion has been reached. The following was actually turned in by two of my English students, Rebecca [last name deleted] and Gary [last name deleted.] " At first, Laurie couldn't decide which kind of tea she wanted. | ‘The Long And Short Of A Story’– Rhinoplasty: | | 2007-12-28 22:05:00 | | How would you go about deciding your surgeon? It is an important decision of your life; you definitely don’t want anything to go wrong. You will want to make sure that you choose the best in your budget. Rhinoplasty is a surgery performed to reshape the nose. It can help you reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the tip or the bridge, or even change the angle between your nose and the upper lip. Changes in the structure of the nose can make a big difference to your face. If I had to go through this surgery I think pictures of patients who have gone through the surgery would be my ideal stop. How a person looked before and the difference after the surgery would say the real story. Though it is not always about correcting the defect for perfection, there are other reasons like birth defects which could cause breathing problems for someone to opt for this reconstructive surgery.Moving away from the technicalities of rhinoplasty or any cosmetic surgery for that matter, I personally feel there is this certain charm to a person with a slight imperfection. Sometimes correcting that takes away that special feeling. Of course eventually it’s all about your confidence. On superstitious grounds people of old school of thought feel that if they change the imperfection they are letting go of all their good luck. Today it’s all about how you feel.Rhinoplasty has become a common reward for passing college entrance exams. Some even undergo surgery two or three times - at a fraction of the cost of Western procedures - to perfect their profiles framed by the ever-present hijabs, or scarfs, they must wear. I had to just mention this in this article which is by the Chicago Tribune. We really are not aware of the Iranian culture. This just goes to show how far our technology has come and at the pace its moving. There are some of us who would think and think and rethink before taking the plunge and opting for a plastic surgery if its just for a ‘look good’ or ‘feel | | By: Nose Surgery Beverly Hills | | |
| | Rejection -- Artemis (short story, SF) -- by Analog SF | | 2007-12-15 20:34:00 | | Well, I received a rejection from Analog SF today. There's some good news and some bad news. The bad news, obviously, is that it was rejected. The good news is that Mr. Schmidt actually left a comment on the rejection sheet (a form letter), which editors don't generally do, and especially not for a magazine that gets hundreds of submissions every month. The comment said:P.S.: Accurate punctuation is important, too. You should especially review format.Punctuation is something I'm really going to have to look at. I didn't realize I was using bad punctuation. Maybe I missed something, or maybe I made some error that didn't seem like an error, but to a seasoned editor like Mr. Schmidt, is a big no-no.As for format. I'm not 100% sure what he meant by that. I did follow the guidelines on the Analog website, which says:Manuscripts must be computer-printed or typed (check), double-spaced (check), on white paper (check), one side of the sheet only (check). | | Rumble: New Antarctic Short Story | | 2007-12-04 07:46:00 | | It has been three days now. For three days we are huddled with seven people in the last of two tents we still have up. Two of us sleep on the kitchen table, the rest of either in a chair or on pieces of luggage which we stacked in the corner of what once was our kitchen tent. The other tent is full with our personal gear. All the rest of our equipment is crated and lined up near the helicopter landing site. When the Akademik Fedorov, our Russian pick-up vessel (the largest in the Antarctic by the way!) arrived at the island three days ago, the sky was covered. After they landed their big Mil-8 helicopter near our expedition camp, we loaded it up as much as we could, but the mist came in from above the sea and in minutes. The visibility turned real bad. So bad that the pilot had to fly on radar trying to find the ship back. The evacuation was aborted then. Three days we are now waiting to get off the Antarctic. On the ship, a few miles off shore, hot showers and proper meals are waiting | | By: The Road to the Horizon | | |

| | [Original Fiction/Short Story] Waiting for Life to Begin | | 2007-05-26 08:12:12 | | Waiting for Life to Begin
I’m the first to know,
my dearest friends,
even if your hope has burned with time,
anything that’s dead shall be re-grown,
and your vicious pain, your warning sign,
you will be fine
–Angel and Airwaves–”The Adventure”
You have a crick in your neck from spending the night in your office chair. It’s no one’s fault but your own, although you’re disgruntled that a company that boasts of making chairs for three generations isn’t really all that impressive after all. Stifling the childish urge to make an official complaint, you try to iron out kinks from your shoulders; to release tension that’s been building up for weeks– or since whenever you last visited your massage therapist. You’ve been busy.
Even without seeing your reflection bounce off the glass windows, you know that you look like shit. There’s no mistaking your slightly wrinkled dress shirt and trousers, and you&rsquo | | By: the cloudy dreamer/stacy | | |
