Evolutionary significance of Human Chromosome 2
    2008-06-16 22:32:00
All apes apart from man have 24 pairs of chromosomes. There is therefore a hypothesis that the common ancestor of all great apes had 24 pairs of chromosomes and that the fusion of two of the ancestor's chromosomes created chromosome 2 in humans. The evidence for this hypothesis is very strong. The EvidenceEvidence for fusing of two ancestral chromosomes to create human chromosome 2 and where there has been no fusion in other Great Apes is:1) The analogous chromosomes (2p and 2q) in the non-human great apes can be shown, when laid end to end, to create an identical banding structure to the human chromosome 2. 2) The remains of the sequence that the chromosome has on its ends (the telomere) is found in the middle of human chromosome 2 where the ancestral chromosomes fused. 3) the detail of this region (pre-telomeric sequence, telomeric sequence, reversed telomeric sequence, pre-telomeric sequence) is exactly what we would expect from a fusion. 4) this telomeric region is exactly where o...

[Video] The Significance of AUM, OHM or OM
    2008-05-23 20:59:53
AUM is a natural sound. In Sanskrit A stand for Brahma, U for Vishnu and M for Shiva. The combination of three powers makes up AUM and this combination embodies God with creative, sustaining and destructive powers. AUM, the sound, is in our blood. The first sound that a baby makes is A, then Uuh and then the word Ma. This natural sound connects us to God. In Hindu culture, the baby is considered very pure with no ideology and therefore close to God.AUM in English is equivalent to GOD; G for generative power, O for operative power and D for destructive power. The sound of AUM can activate and open all the seven charkas especially the sahasrar, which is located at the top of the head. According to Hindu culture that is where God resides. AUM was discovered by the rishis. Rishis are the people who can see the truth. How can you see these hidden powers in yourself? It is known that new cells are always forming in our bodies, other cells are always dying and something always remains the same...

al-hamd li' Llah | meaning and significance
    2008-01-03 21:02:50
The word for praise is al-hamd (praise to the Divine), and the attitude inherent in it constitute an essential aspect of being truly human. The Quran asserts in several verses that all things praise God, but the praise by men and women is of special significance because human beings have been given the possibility of not praising God and not being thankful to Him.In Sufism hamd (praise of God) and the inner attitude associated with it are central. Followers of the Path are expected to be always grateful to God and to praise Him no matter what their circumstances.A Sufi Story | One day a master and his disciples were sitting together. The master asked one of the disciples, "What are the conditions under which we should say al hamd li' Llah." The disciple replied, "Whenever one receives bounty or gift from God one should say al-hamd li' Llah."The master responded, "What then is the difference between you and the dog sitting in front of us? If I throw him a piece of meat, he wags his tail in gratitude and praise. And when I do not do so, he simply sits there awaiting something from me."The master added, "A darwish (an initiate in the sufi path of inner illumination) is a person who, if receives a gift or bounty from God, says 'al-hamd li' LLah' and if he receives nothing and is in greatest state of difficulty and need, he still says al-hamd li' LLah".~The attitude of praising God and being always grateful to Him, with the awareness that in ourselves we are poor and God is Rich from Whom all blessings flow - from the life we have to the air we breathe to the food we eat to the earth upon which we walk - is necessary for being truly human. It is a significant component of our humanity and is a basic way for us to realize who we are and to reach the state of perfect servanthood.- from Seyyed Hossein Nasr's The Garden of Truth: The Vision and Promise of Sufism, Islam's Mystical TraditionNote: Al-hamd li' Llah, also written as al-hamdu-lillah is an arabic expressi...

    The Significance of the NIE
    2007-12-09 17:14:56
I left this out of the first post on this topic, so I'll include it now.The significance of this report is not that we can stop pressuring Iran, but 2 different points:1. Going to war with Iran would be pointless and dumb.2. Iran is guided by 'cost-benefit analysis'. They're vulnerable to international economic and political pressure. On My NIE AnalysisDo You Think the Iranians Have a Nuclear Weapons Program? Why The NIE Should Be TrustedThe Significance of the NIEHow Will the Bush Administration Use the NIE Report? ...

    Gemstones, the Significance of Colour
    2007-11-17 02:59:57
Our response to colour is actually much more complex than most peoplerealise. It's a mixture of instinct, cultural conditioning and theresult of personal experiences and associations. We can seeinstinctive responses in nature, warning colours like red, orange andacid green are associated with being poisonous and animals haveevolved to avoid those colours (as other animals have evolved to mimicthose warning colours as self-protection. Associations of coloursnaturally come from our environment too, the blue of the sky, the goldof the sun, the green of grass, the red of blood and orange of fire, all produce memories and emotions. However, the memories and emotionsabout fire colours for example would be very different for someone whoassociates them with a log fire on an winter evening and someone whohas had the isfortune to be caught in a house or car fire. Oftennegative memories mean a "gut response" to a colour; the person mightnot even be aware on a conscious level why they just "don't like" acolour. These individual responses are one of the reasons why youshould wear colours and jewellery that you are drawn to, rather thanwearing things that you are "told" are right for you. You can't feelconfident and relaxed in clothes that you don't feel comfortable in.One of the biggest cultural differences in the symbolism of colour iswith black and white. In the West white is the colour of purity, innocence and marriage, in the Eastern traditions white is the colourof mourning and grief, while black is the colour of funerals and deathin the West. The power of colour to enhance or detract from our appearance is verymarked, if you have ever experienced having a personal colour analysissession you can't have failed to be amazed how with some coloursdraped round your neck you look old, wan and even lopsided! Yet withothers, you look younger, prettier and more vibrant. Basically, whatcolour analysis does is to examine your natural skin...

    Significance of 1984...in Present World
    2007-06-19 05:35:00
Having just read Orwell's 1984 I was fascinated by period, characters and idea characterized by him. Though the plot was realized in novel in1984...n since nothing of that dimension occurred people derided the novel stating it to be baseless and its idea unrealistic. But I think that maybe time is not correct we cannot escape the dangers mentioned in the Orwellian World. Author was not guessing the time of such catastrophe but was focusing on the dangers of such world. If we look around we can clearly see Orwellian Characteristics emerging in the society. Now think of the main idea of party-WAR IS PEACEFREEDOM IS SLAVERYIGNORANCE IS KNOWLEDGE The Book forwards the idea of another book by the same author-"Animal Farm",. World mentioned is divided into three almost equal powers in which there is complete dictatorship of a party. All movements and workings of citizens are continuously monitored and press and media are wholly controlled by the government which bends the news and facts in its favour. Prevalent language is "Newspeak" in which all worlds conveying the ideas opposed to party are eliminated. Any person with different opinion than party is "evaporated" or eliminated in party terms. All this is seen through the eyes of our main character "Winston Smith" who battles against all this. But essence of the story is how world of ours can develop into such a authoritative society which defeats the basic ideas of democracy, freedom etc. How true these ideas appear today. America declares war on Iraq- Afghanistan that stretches for 5 years...kills millions..and still is claimed by the coalition forces to be the war fought for freedom, peace blah blah... Governments hide information from people stating it is in there interests, people work under the directives of government, or similar organizations and still happy to be free...world becoming a board game where all policies are decided by few in control and the rest follows. Doesn't these suggest the coming of Orwel...
