image by -wh- Living in Singapore is a great education on world religions. The wonderful thing about Singapore is the way Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, and Jews all live side-by-side and tolerate each other's beliefs. The oldest Hindu Temple (Sri Mariamman Temple, dating back to 1843) in Singapore is in the heart of Chinatown, and the two minute drive between River Valley Road and Oxley Rise will take you past two Hindu Temples (Sri Donaayuthapani and Sri Thendayuthapani Temples), a Catholic Church (Church of the Sacred Heart), and a Synagogue (Chesed El Synagogue). This is a busy time of the year for the different communities in Singapore (and worldwide). The Holy month of Ramadan is about to start (1 September until 30 September) and the holiday of Hari Raya Puasa (1st October) will mark the end of this important time. Hari Raya Puasa signifies 'openness' of both mind and heart, and in multi-racial Singapore, this is often expressed in the practice of inviting non-Muslim f

    Primary Schools in Singapore
    2008-08-26 07:38:23
image by Purple_manIf anyone is interested in a very interesting and comprehensive report on how to choose the right Primary School in Singapore (local system) please take the time to visit Dominique Goh's blog, From Dominique's Desk, and download her free e-book. Until I read the report I hadn't realised how complicated the system here is for selecting a primary school. She explains the difference between affiliated and non-affiliated schools, and that some schools are taught in Chinese. There are single and dual session schools, Religious affiliated and clan affiliated schools, co-ed and single sex schools, and schools which support special needs children.Dominique runs through the costs related to schooling as well as the registration proceedure. This kind of information will make life a whole lot easier for anyone contemplating this big step in their child's life.Dominique is a mum of two young boys, childcare educator, blogger, and freelance writer. SAFRA Singapore Bay Run & Army Half Marathon 2008
    2008-08-24 23:02:51
24 August 2008It has been 2 years since I last ran the Army Half Marathon, previously also known as Sheares Bridge Run. This year, I registered for the 21km competitve run with my Brother and Jian Hao.I had not been running for months and I'm certain that this half marathon would be a tough one for me to complete. Nevertheless, at 5.30am, we reached the start point. As it was raining the previous day, the Padang field was extremely muddy. The slight drizzle at 5.45am caused some of us to worry. But the worry dissipated when at 6.30 am, Chief of Army flagged off the race. What made me enjoy the AHM 2 years ago was the experience of running on the road (specially cordoned off for the event), the cool morning breeze, and sightseeing. After a trip to the toilet at the 2km mark, I lost Jian Hao and my Brother. Starting off the race at too fast a pace, I was already panting then. Jogging upslope at the East Coast Parkway (ECP) eventually tire me off.Throughout the race, I was jogging and brisk

Why Singapore can never qualify for Canoeing in Olympics?
    2008-08-22 12:29:06
Was watching the television when canoeing teams from different parts of the World gathered in Beijing to compete in the Olympics.Following the chain of unfortunate incidents related to local water sports, there is a new regulation that requires all those engaged in water sports to wear safety life vests in competitions and practice. The canoeists in Olympics aren't wearing any life vests! There goes the Olympic Dream of all Singaporean canoeists.Unless... The Singaporean canoeist will don the life vest to mark his difference from the rest...

My Time as a Singapore Tourist is up...until the next visitor
    2008-08-18 05:22:11
Bec left early this morning which was sad but inevitable. We have had a great time visiting some of the sights in Singapore and also visiting Sibu Island, Malaysia. It was so great to spend time with an old friend with whom I share so much common history. There are a few things on my list which we didn't manage to do, but in all, we did plenty, and as it was Bec's second visit, it wasn't a big deal to skip a few things. Here's what we did manage to do:Walked in McRitchie ReservoirAte Dosai in Little IndiaLooked at animals at Night SafariLooked at birds at Jurong Bird ParkLooked at Singapore under construction from the Singapore FlyerHad a swim at the local poolTraveled to Sentosa via Monorail and then watched Sentosa 4D Magix Show and rode the Luge/Sky RailLooked at shops at Vivo City Ate pizza at Italian Restaurant, La Nonna, in Holland VillageAte dumplings at Din Tai Fung, ParagonWe didn't do anything too cultural or educational; it was just a fun traipse around some of the sights.

    Singapore's 43rd Birthday - A National Day worth Celebrating
    2008-08-10 11:14:07
Whenever Singapore celebrates its birthday, Singaporeans are reminded of how the state gained its independence in 1965. Then, it was considered a "political joke". Nobody thought such a small state, naked of resources, could survive and prosper in the international realm. The People's Action Party (PAP) would always remind Singaporeans that it brought Singapore to where it now stands. Being the only government that we have seen, it has to be the case. However, the Opposition parties would argue that many other factors contributed to the nation's success as well, and the PAP had its blunders too.As Malaysian politics gets increasingly dramatised, its neighbour island state is not getting spared too. Almost every day, there are articles and commentaries debating the authoritarian style of the PAP. Even in the morning of National Day, the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) was distributing flyers and selling books for its Tak Boleh Tahan campaign in Toa Payoh.Singaporeans have every reason t

Singapore banks sound warning after mixed results
    2008-08-07 11:22:00
SINGAPORE - Singapore banks warned Thursday of tougher times ahead after reporting mixed results for the second quarter as economic growth slowed and financial markets struggled.Net profits in the June quarter rose at Southeast Asia's largest lender DBS Group and at United Overseas Bank (UOB), but fell at Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp (OCBC).DBS said it had made a profit of S$652 million in the three months to June, up 16 per cent year-on-year, but chief executive Richard Stanley said it would remain vigilant."We will continue to be watchful and vigilant in the months ahead as the operating environment becomes increasingly challenging," he said.Analyst David Lum from Daiwa said the only blip on DBS second-quarter results was the fall in net interest margins, a key measure of bank profitability."DBS was the only one of the three Singapore banks to report a decline in net interest margins," said Lum, referring to the trio that put out figures this week. "That was probably the only disappo

Confirm Singapore 2009 will has recession
    2008-08-07 11:16:00
Courtesy of CNA forummer: Johnlaw2012It is now clear that all G7 economies are headed towards a recession; the US is in a recession; the UK is headed towards one with the bust of their housing; Japan - as recognized today by its government is entering a recession; Italy's economy is comatose and borderline in recession; Canada had negative growth in Q1 and its economy is tied to the US; while Germany and France (as well as Ireland and Spain and Portugal especially but also the rest of the Eurozone are headed towards a recession. So all of the G7 economies are now in a recession or headed in the short run towards a recessionary hard landing. Add to these G7 the recession in the rest of the Eurozone (starting with Spain Ireland and Portugal but by now all of the Eurozone as industrial production, sales and business confidence are plunging in all of the Eurozone). Add also the recession in Estonia, Latvia, the risk of hard landing in South East Europe (Bulgaria Romania Hungary and Turkey)

Being a Tourist in Singapore is Exhausting!
    2008-08-07 10:37:51
We have been busy tourists trying to fit everything in while Bec is here from Australia, and I must say that being tour guide is exhausting! Everything is pretty spread out and we are reliant on taxis to get us almost everywhere. One day I will drum up enough courage to hire a car for a few days and see the island that way.Since my last post we have been for the swim (tick), visited the Night Safari (tick), taken a ride on the Singapore Flyer (tick), been to the Jurong Bird Park (not on the list), and had a masala dosai in Little India (tick). Today is rest day before we head to our favourite child-friendly resort, Sea Gypsy, in Malaysia for four nights. All the outings have been lots of fun. The Night Safari is a highlight of anyone's visit to Singapore. There is something special about seeing the animals at night, even though I found the commentary on the tram annoying and the noise of the people around us intrusive. We didn't manage to catch the show, but that didn't bother us t

Alex Pagulayan Wins Guinness 9-Ball Tour, Singapore Leg!
    2008-07-29 12:34:37
2004 World Pool champion Alex Pagulayan, aka The Lion, defeated compatriot Dennis Orcollo with an 11-6 score to bag the Singapore leg of the Guinness 9-Ball Tour! Alex Pagulayan's victory earned him the top prize of US$15,000 top prize while the world’s number one pool player, Dennis Orcollo, who entered the tournament as a wild card bet, got $6,000. Incidentally, the win also ended the Chinese Taipei stranglehold on this year's Guinness 9-Ball Tour. The Chinese Taipei players previously dominated the Tour as they swept all six legs last year and this year's first three legs, which were all won by Chang Jung-Lin, who swept all six legs in 2007 and this year’s first three ones, was booted out of the competition by Filipino pool player Dennis Orcollo in the group stage. Other interesting notes: The last time a Filipino pool player won a title on the Tour organized by ESPN STAR Sports was in 2006. It was when Efren Bata Reyes, aka The Magician, beat Ricky Yang in Jakarta, Indo

Subprime fallout could last two years: Singapore bank head
    2008-07-08 11:34:00
SINGAPORE, July 8, 2008 (AFP) - The global fallout from the US subprime mortgage crisis could last another two years, the chairman of Singapore-based United Overseas Bank said in a newspaper report Tuesday."I hope I am wrong, but my view is that this crisis will take one to two years to stabilise," Wee Cho Yaw, a banker for almost 50 years, told a university commencement ceremony, The Straits Times reported.A bank spokeswoman confirmed the quotes when contacted by AFP.The default crisis in the US subprime -- or higher risk -- mortgage sector ballooned into a world credit squeeze as banks tightened lending criteria. The crisis has also battered financial markets."What worries me is that no one seems to know the full amount of off-balance sheet securities circulating in the financial markets," Wee was quoted as saying. The subprime homeloans were repackaged into securities and sold to investors around the world. The wave of defaults led to billions of dollars in losses on those securities

eDLink Singapore - Unethical Way of Driving Web Traffic to Site
    2008-07-04 22:45:34
I received this email in my inbox and felt weird about it.I didn't register for such a service in the first place. My first thought was "Did anyone sign this up for me?"Immediately, I attempted to log in at the website. However, fortunately or unfortunately, the given username and password didn't work.A try at resetting the password shows that the username is not found.Uh Huh! Another spamming email to drive traffic to its site! The email by eDLink Singapore mimicked a registration confirmation email so that it gets readers of such emails to log on to its website to check it out. According to the spam law in Singapore, all advertising emails/SMS would need to include a in its message title. So eDLink Singapore literally found such a loophole to gain traffic for itself.I thought such unethical approach by eDLink Singapore would definitely be detrimental to its image.

Fourth Singapore university should cap intake at 2,500, says study
    2008-06-24 23:20:30
The next Singapore university should be a publicly-funded institution offering disciplines such as Design and Architecture, Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Business and Information Technology, with an integrated approach centred on these disciplines. This was the recommendation made by the Committee on the Expansion of the University Sector in a preliminary report released on Tuesday. The committee also proposed that the fourth local university should set an annual intake of about 2,000–2,500 students and provide the bulk of the additional university places required to achieve the target 30 per cent cohort participation rate outlined by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the 2007 National Day Rally. While recognising the progress made by Singapore's existing universities, the committee - which began studying the education landscape last September - asked that consideration be given to the introduction of a liberal arts education in Singapore. Religious Touting in Singapore
    2008-06-23 13:09:22
23 June 2008Baohui's school vacation had ended. Met her after her examinations and helped her with her studies. On the way back home, I took a cab. The ride was smooth and comfortable until I reached my place. After paying for ride, the taxi driver handed me a pamphlet.Darn! Without looking at the pamphlet, I already knew it could only be a religious one. And indeed it was. It was an article distributed by The Glory Presbyterian Church for the Singapore Every Home Crusade Co. Ltd.Singapore is a secular state. It is multiracial and multireligious. Everyone has his or her own freedom and space to practise religion. Nevertheless, I have had encountered more than a handful of religious touting incidents. I shall attempt to recall some interesting ones:On one occasion, a taxi driver started a religious preaching once I boarded his taxi. He started to criticise other religions and pointed that his religion was the only true religion. My family and I were utterly annoyed but kept silent as he

Looking Up To David At The National Musuem of Singapore
    2008-06-21 04:17:33
The other day after the movies I took Ben across to the National Museum of Singapore for a quick look. We didn't have time to look at the Mozart Exhibition, but I thought it we could find something of interest in the free galleries. And of course the first thing you see even before you even walk through the front door is the huge David Sculpture in the main atrium. Done by Indonesian artist Titarubi, it totally dominates the space and is quite a focal point for little children.I love the way the artist has covered this iconic image of ideal masculine beauty with a very feminine brocade fabric. The delicate swirls and flowers soften his muscles and confuse his gender identity. He becomes a camp figure posing in front of the mirror! It also brings him into comtemporary culture, and for me this is brilliant. Singapore steals a march on Hong Kong
    2008-06-10 06:55:00
By Sundeep Tucker in Hong Kong Hong Kong has been overtaken by Singapore in a new ranking of global commerce, the latest sign that its arch-rival is stealing a march in the battle to be Asia ’s leading international financial centre. The report on the top 75 worldwide centres of commerce, commissioned by MasterCard, shows Hong Kong slipping from 5th last year to 6th, while Singapore jumped two places to 4th. The city-state narrowly failed to take 3rd position from Tokyo, which owes its lofty position to its enormous domestic financial market. London and New York took first and second place. The index combines seven measures of commercial power. While Hong Kong retained its ranking as the world’s No.1 business centre, it trailed Singapore as a financial hub and in other areas including economic stability, legal and political framework and liveability. The figures show that Singapore pulled away from Hong Kong last year when it came to the ease of doing business, a measure which encompa

Luckily when scratching the last coupon I got $10!!! Am I lucky or what! For the rest of my lunch kakis well everyone won something although some not able to cover back what they had spend. The Fund Mgt Activities in Singapore", by Valerie Wu
    2008-05-24 05:52:00
EXECUTIVE SUMMARYSingapore's booming asset management industry saw its sixth consecutive year of double-digit growth in 2006, boosted by continuing worldwide interest in Asia's rapid economic. According to the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s (MAS) latest survey of the asset management industry, the amount of assets managed by Singapore-based fund managers swelled by 24 per cent last year, reaching $891 billion at end-2006, compared to $720 billion a year earlier. Since the mid-nineties, the Singapore Government has identified the investment management industry as one of the key financial sectors to develop. With this in mind, the MAS has introduced a variety of incentives and reforms to encourage the growth of the investment management industry. The MAS and the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC) have committed to place out a total of S$35 billion of funds to external fund managers over the next few years. This will serve as seed money to grow the Singapore fund

    Pedra Branca belongs to Singapore!
    2008-05-24 04:01:01
23 May 2008As a Singaporean, today marks an important day. The 28-year dispute over the Pedra Branca is resolved. Pedra Branca belongs to Singapore!Watching the International Court of Justice ruling live on Channel NewsAsia, I was paying close attention with ears wide to what the Judge was trying to read out from his script. It took about 2 hours before he finally announced that Pedra Branca belongs to Singapore; Middle Rocks go to Malaysia and South Ledge ownership would depend on the International Sea Boundaries. 12 judges agreed that Pedra Branca belongs to Singapore while 4 disagreed. In my opinion, the judge ruling on the matter displayed signs of diplomatic gestures. Singapore takes Pedra Branca while Malaysia takes Middle Rocks. The ICJ leaves both parties to work out on South Ledge. It seems like the most optimum "win-win" situation that could possibly work out. Professor Tommy Koh, ambassador-at-large, had previously mentioned that the ICJ should not worry about diplomatic conc
