    2008-03-03 10:29:00
BRABUS is offering a two-time deal for buyers of its two special cars, the SLR McLaren roadster conversion and smart. Interested parties can buy these two as a performance couple, one of the city, and one for touring. Cost is an eye-watering €699,000 for both, and can be enjoyed by owners of SLR and/or Maybach. And both cars come in a special snow-white exterior paint colour.SLR has upped its game by 24 bhp/ 18kW to 650 bhp/ 478kW, from the old 5.4-litre V8 supercharged horse of the early 2000s. It has been assisted by a fuel-cooling system and special camshafts. Acceleration is assisted by a limited-slip differential so that 0 – 100km/h goes quickly by in 3.6 seconds. For the benefit of those who can, its ultimate speed is 337km/h.Aerodynamically there are clear changes as well, where the front bumper hosts a spoiler that helps to minimize lift and keep the 20-inc wheels on the ground at all times.Press ReleaseAn idea from yacht design finds its way into the automotive world: The

    Mercedes-Benz Launches SLR McLaren Roadster
    2008-01-15 11:57:10
206-MPH Super Sports GT Goes Topless DETROIT, MI – A roadster version of the formidable SLR McLaren super sports coupe is in the spotlight at the 2008 North American International Auto Show. Powered by a supercharged 5.5-liter, 617-hp AMG V8 engine, the SLR McLaren Roadster boasts 0-60 mph acceleration of only 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 206 mph. 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster Showcasing Formula 1 technology for the street, the SLR McLaren Roadster’s carbon fiber monocoque provides high torsional rigidity for outstanding handling as well as unparalleled protection in collisions. U.S. deliveries of the new roadster model began in Fall 2007. A Convertible Top Designed for High-Speed Driving Thanks to its fully retractable top, the SLR Roadster offers open-air driving pleasure that’s practical for everyday use. Available in three different color combinations, the retractable top of the new SLR Roadster blends into its aerodynamic silhouette, and newly developed roof material makes the cabin relatively quiet with the top up. Even with the top down, conversation is still possible at well over 120 mph, thanks to its superior aeroacoustics. The semi-automatic roof opens by simply unlatching it from the windshield frame and raising the top slightly, after which an electric motor folds it away in less than ten seconds. In the wind tunnel, the SLR Roadster has been optimized for remarkable levels of aerodynamic efficiency, handling, and aeroacoustics at high speeds. The new SLR Roadster even inherits two aerodynamic features from the SLR coupe – an active airbrake integrated in the trunk lid and a diffuser in the rear bumper that provides increased downforce to the rear of the car. A Mercedes-Benz and McLaren Collaboration The SLR McLaren Roadster showcases the collective experience of Mercedes-Benz and its Formula 1 partner McLaren in the development and production of high-performance sports cars. This unique combination of expertise is evident not only

The new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster
    2007-07-17 19:14:14
The new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster combines high-tech from motor racing and the power of a top high-performance sports car with the long-distance attributes and sophisticated atmosphere of a classic Gran Tourismo car. In common with Formula 1 vehicles of today, it too is made of carbon fibre, a material that endows the vehicle with a very high degree of safety as well as extreme torsional stiffness at the same high level as the coupé. In combination with the racing-type chassis this gives rise to outstanding ride characteristics. The maximum speed of the new high-performance sports car, which is powered by an AMG V8 compressor engine delivering 460 kW/626 hp, is 332 km/h and therefore at the same high level as the Coupé. Although the Roadster offers undiluted open-top driving pleasure in the highest performance class thanks to its fully retractable top, the occupants in no way lose out in terms of comfort or the vehicle's suitability for everyday use. Consequently, the new Roadster opens up a new dimension in refinement for open-top super sports cars.Like the coupé version, the new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster once again unites the legend of the successful SLR racing models from the 1950s with the innovative technology of modern Formula 1 vehicles from the Vodafone-McLaren-Mercedes team. Typical stylistic elements, such as the arrow-shaped tip of the Formula 1 Silver Arrow, establish a visual link with the racing cars. The SLR legend of the 50s lives on stylistically in the distinctive lateral louvers, side pipes behind the front wheels and the wide-opening gullwing doors. The new Roadster benefits technically from the many years of experience of Mercedes-Benz and its Formula 1 partner McLaren. Apart from two aluminium engine frames, its body is made entirely of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) materials, making the vehicle an exception among high-performance sports cars. Especially for the Roadster, complex carbon-fibre technology has been intelligently further developed for the monocoque chassis. The result is low weight, exemplary energy absorption and, therefore, extremely high occupant safety as well as a degree of torsional stiffness hitherto unattained in open-top vehicles. This leads to outstanding ride characteristics of the kind otherwise found only in closed-top super sports cars.Puristic soft top is designed for high speedsThe exceptional qualities of the Roadster are attributable also to the fully retractable top, which blends harmoniously into the flowing lines of the SLR McLaren. Its newly developed roof material, which has an interesting new look, not only guarantees complete suitability for everyday use in all weathers, but also endows the high-performance sports car with characteristics that are highly unusual in a roadster. For example, the top speed of 332 km/h with the roof up matches the extraordinary figure set by the Coupé.The roof opens and closes semi-automatically in less than ten seconds, thereby combining the desire for convenience with the purist character of the roadster. To open, the roof merely needs to be disengaged from the windscreen frame and briefly raised, after which it folds away electro-hydraulically. The aluminium bow integrated into the front section of the roof forms a stylish cover for the soft top when it is folded down. A high level of safety is assured by steel-reinforced A-pillars and two fixed rollover bars.Sophisticated aerodynamics and racing-type chassisIn the wind tunnel, the Roadster has been optimised for high speeds with regard to handling, aero-acoustics and aerodynamics. It likewise employs the aerodynamic concept already known from the coupé version, featuring an airbrake integrated into the access lid and a diffuser in the rear bumper to provide increased downforce on the rear axle. In order to provide the best possible weight distribution, and therefore perfect handling dynamics and a high level of braking stability, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster was designed as a sports car with a front-mid engine behind the front axle. Thanks to its low installed position, its AMG V8 compressor engine with air-to-water intercooling, three-valve technology, dry sump lubrication and four metal catalytic converters ensures a favourably low centre of gravity. With 460 kW/626 hp and a maximum torque of 780 Nm, the AMG V8 compressor engine, which is coupled to an AMG Speedshift R five-speed automatic transmission, catapults the Roadster from zero to 100 km/h in a mere 3.8 seconds. The open-top two-seater is equipped with a suspension that was bred on the race track, an electrohydraulic brake system, as well as high-endurance carbon-fibre/ceramic brake discs which offer optimum braking performance, thermal resistance and durability.Unrivalled safety and exclusive appointmentsA high standard of safety is ensured by unique carbon-fibre crash structures, steel-reinforced A-pillars and two fixed rollover bars. Other safety features include adaptive airbags, knee and sidebags, Seat belt pre-tensioners and a tyre pressure monitoring system. The exclusive standard equipment includes semi-aniline-leather-upholstered carbon-fibre bucket seats which can be individually adapted to the driver and front passenger by means of differently sized Seat pads; dual-zone automatic air-conditioning; a high-quality BOSE premium sound system; a multifunction sport steering wheel with gear-change paddles, and a navigation system with integral radio and CD-changer.The new Mercedes-Benz SLR Roadster, like the Coupé, is produced at McLaren's Formula 1 factory in , in accordance with stringent Mercedes-Benz quality criteria, and will be available from September 2007.

New Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster: The highest form of sheer driving pleasure
    2007-07-08 14:26:00
In the mid-1950s, the Mercedes-Benz SLR acquired a hallowed status in the world of motor racing. Quite apart from its long list of legendary race victories, its avant-garde technology and thrilling design instantly transformed it into a blueprint for all high-calibre Gran Turismo touring cars. The new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster, which will be receiving its world premiere in autumn 2007, is likewise rife with charisma and technology that is ahead of its time. Just like today's Formula 1 racing cars, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster boasts a carbon-fibre construction that gives it very high levels of safety and exceptional torsional stiffness on a par with the Coupé version. This combines with a chassis with motorsport origins to produce outstanding handling characteristics. The 460-kW/626-hp AMG supercharged V8 engine under the bonnet of the new high-performance sports car propels it to a top speed of 332 km/h, matching the outstanding mark set by the Coupé. Mercedes SLR McLaren Roadster Safety
    2007-07-03 18:04:00
F1-style carbon-fibre monocoqueCarbon fibre is a life-saving material. This was demonstrated most recently in dramatic fashion at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal on June 10 of this year, when one of the drivers suffered a horrific accident. Despite hurtling into a solid concrete wall at over 250 km/h, the driver survived the crash in his race car made from carbon-fibre composites virtually unscathed. Mercedes-Benz harnesses the safety benefits offered by carbon-fibre materials for the body of the new SLR McLaren Roadster, and builds its open-top super-sports car almost entirely from this exotic material as standard. Consequently, the new high-performance roadster not only serves up an exclusive open-air feast for the senses, it also offers a standard of safety that is unparalleled in this segment.Formula One regulations have demanded that the racing cars be constructed from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastics (CFRP) for some years now.
