The Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Our Society
    2008-06-28 00:00:00
Drinking during pregnancy raises the risk of low-birthweight babies and intrauterine growth retardation, increasing the danger of infection, feeding difficulties, and long-term developmental problems. Heavy drinking during the early months of pregnancy can result in the birth of babies with fetal alcohol syndrome. Drinking alcohol while skiing, for example, increases the risk of hypothermia. Alcohol is [...]

The Metabolism Society needs your help, please sign.
    2008-06-23 20:28:12
I received this in my email today for my website and promptly posted it on my low carb forum but just now realised I should probably chuck it up here too for my readers whom don't frequent the forum:I just received this in my inbox from Richard Feinman, founder of the Nutrition and Metabolism Society and editor for the journal, Nutrition and Metabolism.Basically, it is a petition for the goal on bringing more research and acknowledgment into the effectiveness of treatments of Diabetes 2 through low carb diets rather then just intensive drug therapy which seems to be the focus. With two latest studies doing just that, resulting in one of them having to finish their study early due to too many people dropping dead! I posted about a Management of Diabetes Case Vignette once where doctors from around the world were given some information on a 55 year old woman with diabetes 2 and asked to vote and comment on their treatment from 3 options. None of these include a low carbohydrate diet, jus

Education And Its Importance In Society
    2008-06-18 00:00:00
Education is the key, but not the panacea; Foucault was an educated man, if not indeed over-educated; and like most of the over-educated (no exceptions implied) capable of sometimes being a fool as a result. So there are no guarantees that education, and the literacy that lies at its core, will people the earth with [...]

    A Conservative Society?
    2008-06-13 23:37:00
There’s no shortage of pundits, commentators and scribblers who’ve convinced themselves that the United States is a conservative society. The Tarrance-George Washington University Battleground Poll (Questionnaire and Percentages, section D3) puts conservative respondents at a whopping 62%. (22% very conservative and 40% moderately so.) The May (29-31) Cook Political Report/RT Strategies Polls (page 6) puts the number of conservatives at 37%. No doubt one can find similar results in other polls in...(read more)

    Petrol Price vs. Society
    2008-06-04 22:40:26
Today the Govt. has finally increased fuel prices steeply as was inevitable with international crude price spiraling. I do not know why this government waited so long in taking this decision? Is this hike going to affect poor and rich equally? A uniform price hike in fuels would inevitably mean that a person who has [...]

The sad state of our society
    2008-05-02 20:37:00
These days a newspaper is a sad commentary on the state of our society; and its articles reveal in many ways the depravity of the human heart. Stories of murder and rape, suing or exhortion, supposed discrimination defeating religious freedom, young children committing terrible acts, senseless accidents, and attacks against Christianity fill it's pages. Yet a recent article I read revealed the terrible condition of our society in a slightly more obscure way. The report was about a tragic accident. A group of young people had stolen a vehicle, and in running from police struck a taxi and killed the driver. Later, police interviewed a 16 year old passenger and were shocked at her cold and callous view of what happened. Her comments were so heartless and shocking that the newspaper included a quote. In so doing they carefully edited a foul word yet saw no reason to edit the profaning of the name of God. When I saw this I was deeply saddened. The story itself was grievious enough, to

    A Drain on Society
    2008-04-13 14:12:07
The UK press is today rife with vitriol aimed at the mother of Shannon Matthews, in custody and under suspicion of complicity in the kidnapping of her daughter. Allegations abound, including questions about family attempts to obtain access to community funds given to help in Shannon's recovery. It is even reported that the trustees of the Find Madeleine (McCann) fund were approached for cash. However this case, absorbing though it is from a criminal law point of view, is raising at least as many questions concerning the lifestyle supposedly led by Karen Matthews and her partner.Of course facts are difficult to come by, and as a NoBollocksPolitician I am loath to speculate where facts are lacking. But there are important questions to be answered and facts to be sought - not particularly about this family but in more general terms about how public money is used in the support of low income households.Looking across the news stories today at the comments left on the newspapers' sites by r

Solar powered shingles are forgotten treasure of our society
    2008-03-27 08:16:00
Many years ago scientists invented and developed the first solar power cell for use in program of space exploration. Solar cells have allowed to harvest unlimited resources of solar power in our solar system in the form of direct production of electricity. They put many solar cells together on one wider surface and got solar panels. Larger is the surface of the solar panel, higher is the amount of electricity produced. There are very many power consuming devices in every modern satellite, which need uninterrupted power supply for their work. Solar panels and batteries for storing electric energy, produced in solar panels, formed a very successful combination for addressing problems of energy production in space. The modern age of solar power has arrived by an accidental event in Bell Laboratories in 1954. More than 50 years after this 'Solar Power Breakthrough' we are still not using endless resources of free solar power, as we should have to. Solar is free and everywhere.Direct investme

While walking my Jack Russell, I stumbled across a new place opening on 16th Street, where Steak Frites used to be. The glass doors read Cafe Society Cafe Society and CSNY. While the space has enough tables and seats for a full-fledged restaurant, the decor looks more like a modern bar/lounge. I didn't see any menus and there are still guys working on the space but they told me the bar will be open tonight. Let me know if anyone checks it out.

What are the consequences of one's perspective on life changing? Please, don't be to quick in interpreting what you think is meant by this question. Society, if one could generalize, shares particular perspectives, and it is the adherence to these perspectives that holds society together. Take the idea of patriotism. Working with the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul
    2008-03-02 10:18:00
After many weeks trying to find out on how we can create our own foundation to help others, we have decided that it’s better to make one non profitable organization stronger that to have many small organizations. We had a meeting last Sunday with the Val Laue, the president of the SSVP of Park Rynie. This is great news for us because the SSVP has been helping South Africans for many years now. The SSVP has branches all over South Africa ( and all over the world ) meaning that by working together we can have a greater impact on the whole of South Africa. Each member of the SSVP is a volunteer meaning that they do not have spend up to 50% on administration fees like a lot of other organizations, this is fantastic because we didn’t want to work with an organization where you wonder where the money is going? At the present moment Val Laue told us “there are to many people to help and that they do not have the financial power". I’m am sure by using our business to give

Life Stew - How Society Influences Female Identity
    2008-02-21 11:45:40
Have you ever stopped to differentiate between the beliefs you want to have about your life’s direction versus the beliefs you inherit from old habits and from society? Are the expectations of your family, religion, and culture congruent with who you strive to be?What Exactly Do You Believe? The beliefs we have about ourselves, about what we should have accomplished, about how we should behave, about what a mother, family, or wife is determine whether we are satisfied with ourselves and ultimately whether we love and accept ourselves. Many women feel frustration and even self-hatred or at least disappointment surrounding their roles as wives, lovers, career women, and mothers. They hold themselves to standards that are based on rules. These rules are based on beliefs about what a woman is.Women do have a quest at this time in our culture. It is the quest to fully embrace their feminine nature, learning how to value themselves as women and heal the deep wound of the feminine.[i]What is

Congenital Cataract, Wrong Society's Presumption and Parents Role
    2008-01-26 12:58:00
Wrong Society's PresumptionOur society usually has the wrong presumption on congenital cataract disease. Some are:Cataract surgery caused blindnessWait till the children grow up before giving any treatment or surgeryNo special treatment to treat this ailmentPresumption that cataract surgery causes blindness is absolutely wrong. Cataract surgery can restore patient eyesight to the better level and it needs to be done as early as after diagnosis is made.If the surgery were made after the patient show signs of amblyopia, the visual capacity of the patient is not at the maximum level.Patient may undergo further treatment to overcome amblyopia problem. The attitude of waiting until the child grow up first should be avoided before the patient advance to the amblyopic level and the limited capacity to see will stay along the growing up to adult. The situation will become more critical if the patient do not undergo any treatment for amblyopia problem.Parents Role Parents and guardian played a

In 2003 (the most recent year for which detailed figures are available), Australia’s population was slightly less than 19.9 million, with an annual growth rate of 1.2 percent. Most of Australia’s residents live in two widely separated coastal regions on the east and southwest coasts. Population density is low, at 2.6 persons per square kilometer. Nevertheless, Australia is one of the most urbanized countries in the world; less than 15 percent of the population lives in rural areas. The most populous state in 2003 was New South Wales, with some 6.6 million residents; the least populous was Tasmania, with approximately 477,000 residents. Manipulation of media in the marketing society
    2008-01-08 03:38:51
We are living in a marketing society where everything and everyone is being sold. Media plays key role in this culture. One must knowledgeable of the mechanism of marketing and its influence in media in order to survive and not being a slave of this vicious cycle. It is important to understand that advertising is not an isolate entity but part of well organized psychological plane.Preference for stars and not for intellectualsIf one closely analyses popular talk shows and interviews in the media, we can clearly see that they always prefer to ‘chat’ with film stars, singers, beauticians and cooks (a new trend), etc,, rather than intellectuals, professionals or literary persons. Firstly, these programs are sponsored by commercial companies and they are having own their marketing motives. The intellectuals usually do not like questions targeting these sundry things and of course their answers are not going to be favorable to the interest of marketing forces. However the stars certainly entertain this type of questions and their answers are mostly in line with the aspirations of the marketing forces.Cultural influence of soap opera The prime time for TV channels are from 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm and most of the private owned media use good part of this so called ‘gold’ time period to telecast soap operas. It all started with showing Indian tele-dramas. However, with the introduction of excessive duty on imports on these tele-dramas, they have found local substitute with pretty much the same quality and themes. One may call it ‘simple enjoyment’ with family stories. However, we should think if this kind of families really exists in our society and if so it should be extremely rare in Sinhala Buddhist culture. The families shown in these tele –dramas are the ones that most of the merchants fancy in the society. The whole mark of all these tele dramas is that they are extensively emotional and highly flavored with hatred, jealousy and passion and most of the charact

Sapana Babul Ka Vidaai- A Good Message To The Society
    2007-12-24 10:27:00
“Sapna Babul Ka Vidaai” the prime time serial of Star Plus, is slowly gaining the viewer’s attention. Like Saat Phere this serial also shows us the reaction of the society towards a dark complexioned girl. But there is some difference from Saat Phere, as in Saat Phere the lead character Saloni has to suffer a lot due to her complexion till she meets her prince charming- Nahar. But in “….Vidaai”, Ragini has to face the sympathetic attitude. And her problem increases more as her cousin, Sadhana is very beautiful. Though the two sisters are very fond of each other, but Ragini’s mother doesn’t like her daughter’s association with Sadhana. Ragini’s mother thinks that in Sadhana’s company no one will notice her daughter and also they can’t be able to find a suitable match for her. So she always tries to separate the two ones. Our society needs such kind of serials. Though in the present day atmosphere the things have changed, but still we are obsessive about looks. Due to this attitude of ours the beauticians and the cosmetic companies are making money. We need to learn that beauty is just the illusion of our eyes. So we should not give so much attention to the looks. The lead roles of Ragini and Sadhana are played by Parul Chauhan and Sara Khan respectively, who are doing their job perfectly. Vibha Chibber(the assistant coach in movie Chak de India) is playing Ragini’s mother and Alok Nath is playing Ragini’s father.

Importance of learning Abhidghamma for contemporary society
    2007-12-03 03:29:24
Most of people in Sri Lanka call themselves Buddhists but they are mostly Buddhist by birth certificate who only cares of popular Buddhist rituals and few stories and stanzas from Dammapada. Then they go for contradicting faiths like Jothishya (astrology), pray for gods and Sai Baba to fill up their inner religious vacuum. If you are not intelligent, there are so many parties that are eying to exploit you. You may already have been under the custody of a political party or view. There are business and allied marketing organizations trying to sell their products which may not be an absolute necessity for you. Similarly, there are national and international religious missionaries and NGO agents to fish you for their motives. However if you have a solid intellectual base on the mechanism of mind and its reactions to external environment you are well equipped to cope with all the external pressures from the society and you are in the right path of liberation from suffering and inherent unsatisfaction of life. Importance of AbhidhammaAbhidhamma is the Buddhist teaching of psychology (in traditional meaning) without a psyche. It deals with realities and practical way of noble living, based on experience of those who have understood and realized. The seven books of the Abhidhamma Pitaka, the third division of the Tipitaka, offer an extraordinarily detailed analysis of the basic natural principles that govern mental and physical processes. Whereas the Sutta and Vinaya Pitakas lay out the practical aspects of the Buddhist path to Awakening, the Abhidhamma Pitaka provides a theoretical framework to explain the causal underpinnings of that very path. In Abidhamma both mind and matter, which constitute the complex machinery of man, are microscopically analyzed. Chief events connected with the process of birth, life and death are explained in detail. Intricate points of the Dhamma are clarified. The path of Emancipation is set forth in clear terms. Origin

    A New Food Society.
    2007-11-04 13:32:00
November 5. I wish to announce the formation of a new society, and invite you to join. It is “The Society of Abligurands”. Membership is free, meetings are held ad-hoc (but as frequently as possible, preferably at expensive restaurants), rules will be few (and are to be advised), and the only membership requirement is that one must be a regular practitioner of the art of abligurition, or have aspirations to be such a practitioner. Abligurition is, according to the OED, ‘prodigal expense on meat and drink.’ It is derived, as I understand it, from various words which reference squandering on dainty articles of food, and licking (lips certainly, fingers possibly, but perhaps also plates?). The OED does not appear to include the word ‘abligurand’, but it most certainly should, and perhaps with sheer force of our numbers (I know there are more of you out there), perhaps it will at its next revision. You can be part of linguistic history as well as culinary, if you join no

    Degradation of Society
    2007-11-02 10:13:34
If you are still not convinced that we are, as the title of my book says "Going To Hell In A Handbasket" then you probably have not seen or even heard of the Folsum Street Fair held in San Francisco. Sexual deviates of every stripe publicly display their decadence for all to see. One site with photos displays a warning before you can enter it at http://www.zombietime.com/folsom_sf_2007_part_1/. You can read other stories without having to subject yourself to the images on the site to get an idea of the activities engaged by these God haters. I suggest http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folsom_Street_Fair which has other news references to the event. They even had a poster mimicking the Lord's Supper by Michelangelo with leather clad, semi-nude characters for the Apostles and Jesus with sex toys for the food and cups. Some parents even brought their children to witness this event so that they could see the "diversity." God may give us free will to worship Him or not. The country may grant us the right of free speech. However, God will call on everyone to give an account in the end. If you don't know what He will judge us by (Bible) then how can you have confidence that He is pleased with our behavior.

    A Society in Madness
    2007-10-23 23:31:00
A Society in MadnessIt's not often that I leave a theatre with just one word on my lips: Wow. But Steppenwolf's current production of The Crucible, Arthur Miller's rendering of the Salem Witch Trials, is, in a word, "Wow."The production is intense from the very beginning--the house lights darken and the theatre fills with foreboding music and panicked shrieking, and within the first few minutes of the play we're witness to confessions made under extreme duress. Much has been made of the play's exploration of the McCarthy era, and Chicago newspapers have thrown in their two cents about the production's timely relevance to a society that passes legislation like the Military Commissions Act, but for me, the most interesting aspect of the production had to do with its exploration of a society gone mad.The Salem of the play (which is slightly different from the Salem of history), has a mixture of peoples: Rev. Parris is loath to jump to the conclusion that witchcraft is afoot (primarily due to concerns over maintaining his position as the town's pastor). Rev. Hale, a visiting minister, is an educated, fairly rational man with a conscience: before agreeing to examine a girl who has fallen ill, he tells the townspeople that he will only provide his services if they will agree to abide by his verdict, which may be that no witchcraft is at work. However, a wealthy couple are quick to pronounce the situation unnatural in the midst of jealousy and concerns over their own daughter.News of the illness spreads quickly through the village, and it doesn't take long for (believed, though entirely unsubstantiated) rumors to make their way: the girl flew! She levitated from her bed! A pot of soup is taken as a sorcerer's brew since a frog jumps in on accident. Even though Abigail repeatedly tries to convince her uncle that she and the other girls were just dancing in the wood, he is unsatisfied until she proclaims that she has been under the influence of a witch: her uncle'

Lon and I had Sunday brunch at Society Cafe Society Cafe. The slightly artsy cafe has average food, terribly slow service (I eventually got up to get my own menu.), at regular Manhattan prices. No discount for being in Harlem which I expected. I had the Stuffed French Toast which was too soggy but otherwise pretty good. Lon's Turkey Club came with cheese (not listed on the menu) which he did not want and the salad greens were not dressed. The ingredients were fresh and the portion sizes were nice but we wouldn't go again.

The Law: Roman-Dutch mismatch in Sinhala Buddhist society
    2007-10-01 10:59:35
Law is one of the corner stone of the society and we have been keeping the foreign Roman-Dutch law, even after sixty years since independence. It is a shame for a country, having more than 75% of its population consist of Theravadha Buddhist, still relying on Roman-Dutch law which is based on Christianity.Mechanism based on right to lieUnlike the traditional eastern stream of law that is based on truthfulness and justice, Roman-Dutch law is completely based on mere debating based on right to defend and truthfulness play very little value there. This western law system has introduced a third party named lawyer who can lie in all means to defend his client and he has no liability for that. Therefore, this system is based on sheer logic and it has very little concern for human values. In a nut shell, it is just a tussle between two licensed liars while the actual parties involved in the dispute are playing very passive role.Buddhist culture based on moral valuesThe minimum moral basis of a Buddhist is the Five Precepts (Pañcasila). The standards set by the precepts are simple — no intentional killing, stealing, having illicit sex, lying, or taking intoxicants. It's entirely possible to live in line with these standards. Not always easy or convenient, but always possible.Clear-cutThe precepts are formulated with no ifs, ands, or buts. This means that they give very clear guidance, with no room for waffling or less-than-honest rationalizations. An action either fits in with the precepts or it doesn't.Right speech, a key element in middle path"And what is right speech? Abstaining from lying, from divisive speech, from abusive speech, & from idle chatter: This is called right speech."— Buddha (Magga-vibhanga Sutta)Lawyer (Professional Liar)There are only few professions that directly conflict with the Five Precepts (Pañcasila) .A butcher who kill animals, a robber who steal others property, a prostitute who involved in commercial sex, and lastly it is a practicing lawyer who has to lie (there is about 50% of chance that a practicing lawyer has to lie in the court each day!) in the (Roman-Dutch) courts. It is strange that while all the other stated professions are considered as shameful; still profession of law has still being regarded high in our society. The lawyers are governed by code of conducts and ethics and one of the codes is that ‘they have to accept client regardless of him being the accuser or accused”, and of course, only one party will be innocent and lawyer whom is hired by other party has to defend his client by lying in all manner. Usually high earned lawyers are those representing for accused in murdering and other criminal acts.In current Roman-Dutch law system every lawyer has no option but to obligate in this mechanism willingly or not !The danger in lyingThe person who lies, who transgress in this one thing, transcending concern for the world beyond:there's no evil, he might not do.- The Buddha, Itivuttaka (Kuddaka Nikaya)It's not good, the doing of the deedthat, once it's done, you regret, whose result you reap crying, your face in tears.- The Buddha, Dammapada (Balavagga)I might argue that lawyer is profession and he is not lying for his behalf.“chethanaham bikkawe kamman vadami” – The BuddhaThe lawyer’s intention for lying is earn money and he is lying for money and he is clearly committing demerit act.If doing sin as part of profession is allowed, the Buddha may have exempt butchers (who kill wage) and prostitutes (who sexually misconduct for money) as well.Politics and LawThe bulk of the members of the parliament are lawyers, or in plain word, professional liars. It is no wonder lying is a principal in politics! It is the court that has taken away the fear of lying of these MPs. Because of the political power for lawyers, unlike butchers and prostitutes, this profession of liars has kept high status in the society. However, one thing that all the lawyers must remember is regardless of their social status, they have to face the natural law of the nature, the karma, in next lives. What can we do?It is lawyers themselves that lie, so the greatest responsibility is within the lawyers (if they really do not want to go to hell) to push to change this Catholic law system. All the Buddhists should unite and demand for law system which is based on core Buddhist values or at least for more reforms for the existing system so that it is based on truthfulness rather than power of lying.

Who to Join in Helping the Poor: St. Vincent de Paul Society, Catholic Worker Movement, ... Priests for Life?
    2007-10-01 01:15:02
Ministering to the poor is something that comes natural to Catholic Christians as we strive for greater union with Christ and love for our neighbor. One thing to keep in mind if we have entered the marriage vocation, is that we cannot sacrifice our family in order to work for the poor. However, as a family gets more established more free time becomes available to spend helping one's neighbor. If possible, do some volunteering as a family. This helps unify the family and parents set a great example for their children. There are many types of poverty to address - lack of morality/spirituality, loneliness, lack of education, and lack of material need, just to name a few. Pray and decide which kind of poverty you are feeling called to minister to. The most common type of poverty when people think of the word "poverty" is the lack of material need. There are many Catholic and non-Catholic organizations one can get involved with to minister to the materially poor. But Catholics need to do some research before getting involved with these organizations because they can have very different philosophies on how to help the poor. The main question these philosophies boil down to is: "What is their view of life?" Is it a burden or is it a gift from God? Secular organizations that help the materially poor often see life as a burden, since many of them deem anti-life measures such as abortion and sterilization to be good weapons in the war against poverty. Sadly, some Catholic organizations implicitly agree with this view on life by their deliberate silence on topics such as these. To me it seems like a Catholic organization cannot exclude the right to life in its work to help the poor. Who is poorer than the person without the right to live? To my knowledge, the only Catholic group to successfully synthesize aiding the materially poor and the right to life is the Missionaries of Charity order of nuns started by Mother Teresa. If anyone reading this knows of any other group, I would like to know. The other Catholic groups that help the poor have been so silent in defending these poor that groups that focus solely on the abortion issue have had to be established. Sadly, they are often branded as "narrow minded" and "single issue" groups that ignore the needs of the materially poor outside of the womb. So find out about the organization you choose to volunteer with, and if you find yourself in a situation hostile to the Gospel of the fullness Life, be not afraid to evangelize! Pax et Bonum, Daniel

    Reflections Of Society.

The wonderful, and often challenging, aspect of myself is how disillusioned I naturally become with myself, with my own self-image. This whole play of spirituality has grown tiresome and old. There is really no difference between what one would call spirituality and any other self-made pursuit occupying ones time. Spirituality is no closer to truth than any other man-made invention. Astrology: The mental tail of Sri Lankan society
    2007-09-14 18:15:57
The Indian sub continent and Arabic region evolved great tradition of astronomy and they were way ahead in observing and exploring the planets and stars of the universe. There was a great history for mathematics in eastern world to support astronomical calculations. The number system was developed by the people of east and introduction of the concept of zero (0) was the revolutionary in mathematics and science. However, this great tradition was later influenced by the Hindu religious myths and deviated from evolving as a science. This great mathematical based astronomical science was unfortunately deviated into mere mythical prediction methodology currently known astrology (Jothisya). In the mean time, Libnitz, one of the great mathematicians in the West, was able to develop the concept of zero into more powerful mathematical concept named as calculus. Thereafter, while scientist of western world utilized these concepts to develop new powerful western culture which is strongly based on rationale thinking, the people in Indian sub continent were miserably gone astray and still struggling to catch up. False ConceptWe should realise that a false concept will never become right just because the majority of people believe it or because it is believed from ancient times, or because there are eminent scientists among the believers.Astrology originated when man’s knowledge of astronomy and the universe was wrong. Hence, astrological calculations were and are made on wrong data. Of the nine planets (navagraha) of astrologers only five are real planets. Of the remaining four, one is a star and another a satellite. The remaining two (Rahu and Kethu) do not exist at all! How can conclusions derived from wrong data be true?Astrological charts are prepared according to the relative visual positions of the so-called planets in the twelve zodiacal constellations at the time of the birth of a person. As the solar planets and the zodiacal stars are millions of miles away from the earth their visual positions at any moment are only virtual and not real. In preparing the chart for a person astrologers make use of the wrong virtual positions of the planets. If they have the knowledge and ability to calculate and find the real positions of the planets through astronomical calculations, perhaps astrologers themselves will lose faith in their cult!Since light from planets and stars takes several minutes to millions of years to reach the earth, it is clear that astrologers’ charts are wrong by several minutes to millions of years!! Astrology and BuddhismThe greatest fruit of modern eastern thinking is Buddhism and one of the corner stones of Buddhism is philosophy of Anatta (Not-self; ownerless). Those who regardnon-essence as essenceand see essence as non-,don't get to the essence, ranging about in wrong resolves. But those who knowessence as essence, and non-essence as non-,get to the essence, ranging about in right resolves.- Dhammapada (Yamakavagga)Seeing danger where there is none,& no danger where there is,beings adopting wrong viewsgo to a bad destination.- Dhammapada (Nirayavagga)The concept of 'Kamma' (Karma) is one of the key concepts in Theravada Buddhism. The Buddha's teaching of Kamma is not deterministic; nor is it indeterministic, for it operates according to a causal pattern. These cunning astrologers try to connect astrology with the concept of Kamma giving various false reasons. However they never prove that how these planets (weight) are connected to the Kamma, which is never preached by the Buddha either. If there is such connection, it would be non other than Buddha himself that would disclose that relationship with the great compassion for the man kind. Multiple personality syndrome in the societyThe whole concept of Astrology is against the Buddhist concept of Anatta. Because of this Anatta (no self, control) nature that Dukkha (suffering) arise and Buddha's teaching is on identifying the true cause of suffering and thereby eradicate this cause to free from Dukkha. On the other hand when one try to predict once future using mere calculations based on his birth time it is no longer comply with the concept of Anatta, it is rather the counter concept of Athma (self). Therefore, all those Buddhists who go to temple and contemplate on Anaithya (impermenenc), Dukkha (Suffering/unsatisfactoryness), Anathma (no-self) come back home and check their zodiac sign, un-auspicious time periods (Rahu kalaya), etc are living double faced life. Their thinking is constantly based on two conflicting concepts, and alas the result is a nation suffering from multiple personality syndrome. When the planet Pluto was disregarded from our solar system considering its distance and size, there were so much of buzz and fan fare among astrologers locally and in India. But in the calibrations, they have simply forgotten the fact that their mythical astrology is based on two other imaginary planets called Rahu and Kethu which have never proved to be in existence. While they were celebrating the omission of Pluto for scientific reasons (size and distance from the Sun), they are still calculating the effect of mere imaginary planets named Rahu and Kethu when predicting the fate of individuals. Two of the most influential planets in astrology, Rahu and Kethu planets have never been caught in the lenses of powerful modern telescopes like Habbal. Is this because of supremacy of astrology or is it simply proving the bankruptcy of astrology? Astrology, Society and PoliticsDespite, all these mythical and irrational nature, astrology is still playing high profile role in Sri Lankan society. While bulk of the ignorant people in the society is blindly following this, there are segments in the society to exploit these poor people. Firstly, it is the astrologers who make good money on this business. The only qualification top be a successful astrologer is to overcome the fear of lying, and be eloquent to convince all his lies. There are number of businessmen who publish astrological magazines and weekly news papers to earn money by selling these myths. Finally, but importantly, it is bankrupt politicians that try to exploit astrology to gain petty political advantages. These crooks know that it is very easy to deceive those people who believe in astrology. So they spread rumors that they have Raja yoga (destined to become king) and try to fool the ignorant voters. Astrology has been in Sri Lankan society for some time, and it will continue to be there until foolishness and ignorance with the people, and there are enough clever crooks to exploit them in the society. It is time to shade this mental tail of astrology and march forward to create new eastern culture based on humanity and rational thinking.

Kandy Perahera and Sri Lankan society
    2007-08-23 15:36:11
The Kandy annual Esala Perahera which started on 19th August will be peaked on 28th August with the final Randoli processions parading the streets. The Perahera tradition has been with Sri Lankan culture for eon.It has been evolved with time since Anuradhapura era up to now. The Dalada Perahera got its current shape in the reign of Sri Wickrama Rajasingha, the last king of Sri Lankan. It is known fact that Sri Wickrama Rajasingha was a Hindu and he influenced the traditions of Dalada Tthevava and Perahera drastically. That is how the processions of four devala integrated into the Dalada Perahera.Of course the traditions are conditioned by the prevailing politico-social context of the country and further evolve which is clearly reflected in of our Dalada history. However, it is worth analyzing the current state of Kandy Dalada Perahera and see if the Perahera correctly reflect the aspirations of the common people of Sri Lanka. Time has passed since the last king of Sri Lanka ousted from the throne. Still have we ever been able to shred aside these ridiculously mismatching Hindu tails from the Dalada Perahera? Now it is called traditions and people are scared to change the traditions. But they have forgotten the very fact that these mismatching traditions were introduced by breaking existing Buddhist traditions!!People still says that ‘Dalada Maligawa’ is a national asset and ‘Dalada Wahanse’ is the symbol of sovereignty and power of our mother land. If ‘Dalada Wahanse’ is considered as national symbol, the ‘Dalada Perahera’ must fully reflect our nation. However, still only upcountry traditional dancing is allowed in the Dalada Perahera. It is time to seriously consider about this so called tradition. Does the ‘Dalada Wahanse’ an asset of up country people or are we matured enough to consider it as a great religious asset of all the Buddhists in the world and the greatest cultural and social asset of whole Sri Lankans?Without any argument, traditional Kandian dancing is the most colorful and superior traditional dancing in Sri Lanka. As a Sri Lankan, still it’s a great pain to see only up country dancing allowed in the ‘Dalada Perahera’ which is considered to be a national event. We can even see drummers and clergy from Japan marching in the procession, but not a single dancer of low country or Sabaragamuwa traditions. These Japanese traditions have been introduced to Dalada Perahera by breaking existing traditions. But so far this has never being the case for low country traditions. Now it’s a time where the Maha Sangha is more and more uniting to promote Buddhism in the country. So it is the political and social leaders to act progressively to keep this great Sinhala tradition as a national event rather than a regional event to boost personal aspirations of few radala families. The Kandy Perahera has become the symbol of backward minded traditional thinking of upcountry families. This hints why great monks and national leaders are no longer immerging from up country areas. The up country society has lost its national interests due to their traditional ‘up country’ arrogance. If one analyze the latest election results, it is clearly evident that, the people from Sinhala dominated up country areas have always either slow to response or completely blind to the national issues. They have simply forgotten the fact that they happened to be up country man simply due to a geological fact and not for any realistic social or political fact. For how long are we going to keep ‘Dalada Perahera’ as a symbol of nation divided?

Overly Sensitive of Society's Ignorance but Feeling Justified
    2007-08-08 00:03:00
So yesterday my old boss instant messaged me out of the blue. She was always like a mother to me and I really loved working with her. However here is how the conversation started: MA says: Hey, send me your blog site again so that I can see your Hawaiian pictures. I didn't get to look at them before. Aimée says: http://newsfromthewhitehome.blogspot.com/ Aimée says: I don't put very much on there unfortunately so it hasn't been updated in awhile Aimée says: how are you? MA says: I am good. I went to the site and your pictures are great. You look way too thin. Are you losing weight? Your trip looks wonderful.one of the photos she would have been referring to me looking "way too thin" Now after I read that last line I felt like she had just punched me in the face. For me that statement would come across EXACTLY the same way as if she had said it the opposite way, “You look way too fat. Are you gaining weight?” Had anyone said that to most people in America you w

    Open Society and Its Enemies
    2007-08-02 10:39:00
Author: Karl Raimund PopperPaperback: Publisher: Princeton University Press; 5 Revised edition (February 1, 1971) Language: EnglishISBN: 0691019681Popper was born in 1902 to a Viennese family of Jewish origin. He taught in Austria until 1937, when he emigrated to New Zealand in anticipation of the Nazi annexation of Austria the following year, and he settled in England in 1949. Before the annexation, Popper had written mainly about the philosophy of science, but from 1938 until the end of the Second World War he focused his energies on political philosophy, seeking to diagnose the intellectual origins of German and Soviet totalitarianism. The Open Society and Its Enemies was the result. In the book, Popper condemned Plato, Marx, and Hegel as "holists" and "historicists"--a holist, according to Popper, believes that individuals are formed entirely by their social groups; historicists believe that social groups evolve according to internal principles that it is the intellectual's

Position of women in Bishnupriya Manipuri Society
    2007-08-01 04:25:03
In Bishnupriya Manipuri society, the women were never neglected. Indian customs like widow-burning, dowry culture or devdasi system were never in practice in Bishnupriya Manipuri community. Goddess cults and myths in Manipur are very ancient and most of them prove the position of women in the society. After the propagation of Vaishnavism of Sri Chaitanya, [...]

Lindsay Lohan Is A Menace To Society
    2007-07-25 03:56:51
Lindsay Lohan was arrested again this morning, for - are you sitting down? - DUI and cocaine possession. Lindsay Lohan was arrested for drunk driving in Santa Monica early this morning — her second bust in less than three months. According to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept., 21-year-old Lohan was nailed around 2:15 AM near Pico Boulevard and Main Street early Tuesday morning. Just last week, Lohan was quietly booked by Beverly Hills PD for an alleged Memorial Day weekend DUI crash. She was due back in court on August 24 to face charges of driving with a blood alcohol level greater than .08 and misdemeanor hit and run. Lindsay just turned 21 — legal drinking age — earlier this month. She’s been voluntarily wearing a SCRAM alcohol monitoring bracelet for the past couple of weeks, even flaunting the device during a recent beach outing in Malibu. Also, Lindsay Lohan was popped for possession of cocaine, driving under the influence, transporting a narcotic into a custodial facility and driving on a suspended license. Sources say her blood alcohol level was between .12 and .13, well over the .08 legal limit. Cops tell TMZ cocaine was found in her pants pocket. And… Law enforcement now says Lohan was stopped after cops got a call of a vehicle being chased by another vehicle. The chasing vehicle was being driven by Lohan. Lohan was driving a white Denali. She was chasing a Cadillac Escalade. Furthermore… She refused to submit to a PASD — Preliminary Alcohol Screening Device. That’s a chemical test administered in the field to determine blood alcohol levels. We’re told cops did administer a walk-the-line test, and Lindsay flunked. So! In summation, Lindsay Lohan is a drunken cokehead, and she was the one doing the high-speed chasing. The director of the Promises rehab facility must be simply beaming with pride right now. Source

    Society Geared For MMA
    2007-07-22 22:47:00
A new angle on why MMA has surpassed boxing as America's dominant combat sport by Doug MacEwanAs an avid fan of both boxing and MMA, I have taken notice of all the different theories as to why MMA has replaced boxing as the most popular combat sport in the world. On the surface you hear the talk of the rampant corruption in boxing turning long time fans away, but wasn’t it Don King who promoted “The Rumble in the Jungle” during boxing’s golden age? And furthermore isn’t it the Ultimate Fighting Championship, undoubtedly MMA’s most popular organization, that is run by two casino owners with alleged connections to the New Orleans mob?I have also listened to many an argument about the apparent brutality of MMA drawing today’s blood thirsty masses away from the more sterilized boxing environment, but anyone who has watched Gatti vs. Ward or Corrales vs. Castillo 1 can tell you that there is plenty if not more violence over the course of a twelve round boxing match as compar

The Philippines Society's Negative Perception Of Call Center Work
    2007-07-13 11:46:00
Look at the picture. What do you see? It looks like a bunch of Filipina callcenter agents either bored or stressed out! Sadly, this is the picture majority of our society perceive our work to be. Dead-end and not a career. This is the reason why callcenter have a hard time finding qualified people themselves. The reason behind the negative perception is ignorance. Most people don't know what type of work we do and our personal sacrifice to provide for our needs and for our families. But we can't really blame them. Our industry has not done enough to enlighten more students and professionals in this matter. Even amongst ourselves, we haven't done enough to convey that what we do is an honest living and a worthwhile job.The only thing that most of us convey we are proud of is how much money we get. And that's a fact. How many times have you told non callcenter people the good things you do in a callcenter? Maybe once or maybe none. But how many times have you encouraged people to join

Welland tribuneWhile local gardeners enjoy the spotlight this time of year because of various public events, those who work on the city's floral beds should not go by without acknowledgment.
