Jimenez, a Lawrence soldier who was kidnapped by Al Qaeda-linked terrorists more than a year ago, has been found in Iraq in a tragic ending to a family's desperate hope for his return.Jimenez's father, Ramon "Andy" Jimenez, was notified by the Army yesterday that his son's body was found two days ago by Iraqi authorities, who contacted their American counterparts. He was identified by dental records. The body of a comrade who went missing at the same time was also found. The elder Jimenez, often rubbing his moist eyes, had held out hope that he would one day see his son's return. But last night he seemed to come to terms with the news."It comforts you when you accept something, and Alex did what he wanted to do," said Andy Jimenez, who was joined yesterday by friends, family, and a community of supporters who had rallied around him since Alex Jimenez first went missing on May 12, 2007.Sergeant Alex Jimenez, an Army specialist who was promoted in January, w | | By: A Pakistan News

They said this would allow their son's captors to smuggle him out and harm efforts to free him.As part of their petition, the Schalits published a handwritten letter, penned by their son, which was delivered to the family two weeks ago by representatives of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.Gilad Schalit was abducted near the Gaza border two years ago. He has not been seen since, but a recording of his voice and two previous letters he wrote have been released. In the latest letter, dated "June 2008," Schalit wrote his parents that he is suffering from medical and psychological difficulties, as well as depression."I still think and dream about th | | By: THE NEW BABYLON TIMES

| That's an order, soldier! | | 2008-06-20 08:42:00 | | We just had to order new ink for our home printer; as a part-time free-lance writer with kids in high school, we do a lot of printing. So I went to the website of the place where we bought our printer, and was going to order some ink, when I looked at the prices. I would have been better off printing with gasoline mixed with wine than buying the ink from that place. I didn't want to just get in the car and go driving off to some computer or electronics store and hope they had the ink I wanted, either; who wants that kind of trouble? Al Gore invented the internet just so that we would never have to leave our houses for anything and that way we'd spare the environment, and I support that goal.I turned to InkjetDeals for help. InkjetDeals is a website that offers coupons and information about online stores selling ink and toner; here's the kicker, though: the stores they promote and the coupons they use can get you up to 80% off retail pricing. 80% off. That's phenomenal. They've g | | By: Under The Eyes Of God | | |

If I were slightly younger and not employed here, I think it would be a fantastic experience to be on the front lines of helping this young democracy succeed. It must be exciting for you...in some ways, romantic...you know, confronting danger."Romantic was not the picture painted just a few miles away in Silver Spring, Maryland, during the second day of testimony by U.S. veterans during "Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan," organized by Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW). "For those of you who don't know, those are brains," said Jon Turner, a former Marine, while showing a slide of the inside of a man's head who had been killed by one his friends in his platoon.Turner and other soldiers on the "Rules of Engagement" panel depicted their tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan as horrifying events in which soldiers indi | | By: The Peace Tree

And we all know what happened to Kerry. For those who wish to see the video of the aging idiot in action of opening the hole under his nose, HERE is the link. Oh, but remember, he said he didn't want to sound like a commercial or a public service ad, so that's supposed to excuse him, or make things all better. | | Sacrifice of a Soldier | | 2008-05-07 00:00:00 | | While walking down the street one day,
I saw a man who stopped to pray.
He knelt before our country’s flag,
While others treat it like a rag.
I asked the man his business there,
He looked at me as he fixed his hair.
He said “Young man, I have a story to tell,
One that you probably don’t know very well.
When I was a youth, not much older than you,
I joined the Marines, thought I’d try something new.
You see, I was mad at my parents and all of their rules,
I thought they knew nothing, just a couple of fools.
So I went through the training, all fit for war.
I was one of the best, the top of the Corps.
Then, not too long, we all shipped out.
I’d finally see what battles all about.
We landed at noon, or at least at high tide.
Being scared would be useless, there was nowhere to hide.
Many men tried their hardest to flee.
But, the Brave Ones charged on, so you could live free.
We thought of our families and our God-given right
To defend freedom, and to be in this fight.

On the night of March 25 corporal Yaniv was injured by mistake by a fellow soldier while he was in the military base. He was taken to the hospital in Haifa where doctors told his family he was brain-dead. ''It only took us a minute to decide to donate his organs because we were certain that he, who had always been so generous, would have been proud of our choice,'' the father, Yafim, said. The screening for patients awaiting transplantation started while the doctors were still in the operating room. This is how the death of corporal Yaniv became crossed, due to complicated genetic reasons, with the life of Salim. | | GOOD SOLDIER | | 2007-09-16 13:52:00 | | (A Poetic Justice Photomontage)The Ambitious Delusions of George Bush and David PetraeusWe now learn that General David Petraeus fancies himself a Dwight Eisenhower for the 21st century.According to a report in London's Independent newspaper by the reliable Middle East observer Patrick Cockburn, the U.S. military viceroy in Iraq would like very much to return from his mission and -- like the Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and of North Atlantic Treaty Organization in its aftermath -- mount a bid for the White House.Petraeus has apparently been so open in expressing his "long-term interest in running for the US presidency" that Sabah Khadim, a former senior adviser at Iraq's Interior Ministry who worked closely with the general in Baghdad, recalls, "I asked him if he was planning to run in 2008 and he said, 'No, that would be too soon'."The mouth of the good soldier,The stern jaw of the general,The small particles of human dustThat move between them;Better things than warTo the rotten film of floating flesh. The bastard truth, in its last throes,Had no teeth to gnaw at deathTo release its harrowed grip,And deceit had honed its razorsSlicing truth to its mortal nub,Veracity fell out the bloody centerUncorking the gushing liquidnow thickly oozing out of man. This that moves us and machineIs what drives the engine of betrayal. It is not man.It is not beast. It is not breath. At birth we suckle its oily nippleUntil we desire it more than food-This; our liquid birth of machinery. It is with that in mind and nothing elseThat the stern jawed general let loose his guns. With precision, from years of training,He nailed his target, truth, between the eyesAnd it fell back calling out a futile "help,"But rescue would not be forthcoming,It too had been felled.Death stands now before them bothAnd places his fluttering lips close,“Come. Join me now. You shall seethe horror within the mortal’s eyeswhen, in the dark, you greet them.”© 2007 mrp/the | | By: Poetic Justice (Dont burn the flag. Wash it!)
| | | Soldier in the Rain. Ralph Nelson. | | 2007-09-11 17:56:33 | |
Soldier in the Rain is a peculiar film. It's one of Steve McQueen's odder performances--his character is a doofus, both the protagonist and the subject of the audience's (intended) laughter. Jackie Gleason gives an excellent performance, though his scenes with McQueen compare poorly to the ones with Tuesday Weld. Their scenes really bring something special of out of Soldier, so it's a big disservice when their importance is ignored, the film instead concentrating on gags. The problem with the film--besides the script, which I imagine is partially William Goldman's novel's fault, the wandering emphases, but also the terrible Blake Edwards and Maurice Richlin script--not so much the dialogue, but the plotting. It's separated into a handful of scenes, almost intended more for the stage. And Ralph Nelson really tries to be an interesting director--we whether it's the omnipresent (sometimes louder than dialogue) Henry Mancini score, or the silent scenes with nothing but breathing--Nelson | | By: The Stop Button

| | Brave little soldier. | | 2007-07-02 12:28:00 | | When I was a kid I lived in Roseberry Street in the heart of Gorton, life was simple, you ate, you slept, and you played. Winters were spent round a roaring fire in the hearth planing for Christmas, and the summer was a time to play with your friends. Dodging Migs* from the mill at the top of our street, drenching each other with the hosepipe they used to swill out the mill yard, exploring strange new places or just playing like the clappers in the hot sun as kids do. Making throwing darts from lollypop sticks; nails and black pitch from the roadside was a popular pastime for boys. Girls of course did sissy things like reciting silly rhymes whilst jumping in and out of skipping ropes or playing hopscotch. I would occasionally sit on the kerbside pretending to be interested in what the girls were doing but it was just an excuse really to catch a glimpse of knickers so that I could tell the other boys what colour they were.
