| Trident diesel sports car not vaporware, still sounds too good to be true | | 2008-08-21 14:02:00 | | If the name 'Trident' has visions of Maseratis and vintage Triumphs dancing through your head, you are in for a big surprise. When we first looked at the Trident Iceni, it was powered by a 375-hp GM turbo diesel V8 mounted up front and producing 520 lb-ft of torque. After a year or two of development, it's even better according to its makers, with the latest version of the venerable Duramax diesel tweaked to offer 550 horsepower at 3,800 rpm along with an arm-wrenching 950 lb-ft at just 1,800 rpm. Trident claims the Duramax can slingshot the Iceni to 60 mph in well under four seconds and on up to a top speed easily surpassing 200 miles per hour. According to the British company, its modified GM/Isuzu engine is capable of running on any blend of biodiesel without voiding the warranty and returns 68.9 miles per gallon (or 57 mpg in U.S. gallons) at a steady 70 miles per hour. Is this the guilt-free supercar for the eco-conscious speed freak? With an elaborate chassis folded from stainless | | By: Car News | | |

The pipa is a pear-shaped, short-necked wooden lute, has four strings, traditionally of twisted silk, but now made of steel. Plastic picks are used to pluck the strings and perform dexterous rolls. Combined with percussive slaps, these techniques evoke particularly vivid emotions.

| Obama Rhetoric on Oil Sounds Nice, But Nonsense | | 2008-07-30 23:00:00 | | There isn't much honesty in this presidential campaign from two candidates who supposedly were of a new type of politics. Earlier this week, Sen. McCain distorted Obama's position on energy taxes in a recent advertisement (the one that featured Britney Spears and Paris Hilton). And today, Sen. Obama made misleading statements saying that McCain wants to cut taxes on oil companies by $4 billion. But what Obama didn't say is that McCain's corporate tax cut would apply to all corporations, whether they produce oil, wind energy, or cookies. (That's kind of like saying that Sen. Obama favors government paying for Warren Buffett's prescription drugs since he supports Medicare Part D. Of course, everybody gets it.) What's also funny is that when the vote in the Senate came up for a specific piece of legislation that did give special tax favors to oil companies and other energy producers (green as well as "dirty"), Obama voted for it and McCain voted against it. It was the Energy Pol | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |

| Summer Sounds | | 2008-07-12 13:43:00 | | As much as I despise trying to sleep in humid weather, one thing I do love on those less sticky evenings and days is waking up to ambient noise. There's something so relaxing about emerging from slumber and listening to birds outside the window, neighbors trying to get lawn mowers started, leaves making a shh-shh noise in the wind, and feeling a light breeze cooling my forehead from the overhead fan. I'll take that any day over the ca-chunk-buzz of my air conditioning unit cranking on after its internal thermometer has determined that the room has gotten too warm. | | By: In Java, Literally... | | |

| Sounds like a glitch at the Fes Rencontres | | 2008-06-11 17:36:00 | | The Fes Rencontres (Fes Meetings) were held over four mornings at the beginning of the Festival, and discussed such subjects as the sacred, customs and the law, and music and the sacred with some well-known international speakers involved. There has always been a very good simultaneous translation service. But something has gone awry this year. British radio partner Passion for the Planet's Chantal couldn't make head or tail of what she heard; Phyllis Franks, a long-time festival devotee, gave up in disgust; and one morning a group of ten Americans simply walked out.Talking to a sound engiineer, we understand that there was some kind of incompatibility between the level of sound coming from the speakers which drowned out the translation service delivered through small headphones. Got to be better next year.Overall, however, the sound for the musical performances at all venues has been superb.Tags: Moroccan Morocco Fes, Maghreb news | | By: THE VIEW FROM FEZ | | |

| Equal Vision Records New Sounds 2008 | | 2008-05-06 09:18:00 | | I recently received this little comp in the mail. Equal Vision Records New Sounds 2008 serves as an excellent collection of what EVR currently has to offer listeners, as well as featuring some classics from former EVR bands.EVR New Sounds 2008 is made up of two discs, a CD featuring tracks from most of the current EVR roster and a few cuts from former bands and a DVD featuring music videos you likely would otherwise have a hard time seeing. The highlights of the CD are strong songs from recent EVR releases including tracks by Circa Survive, Chiodos, the Color Fred, the Fall of Troy, Pierce the Veil, Dear and the Headlights, The Snake the Cross the Crown, and Alive in Wild Paint. The CD also features a cut from the upcoming Cinematic Sunrise EP, "Goodbye Friendship, Hello Heartache" and an exclusive b-side by Damiera. The real highlight of this package, however great the selection of tracks is on the CD, is the DVD. Most die hard EVR fans will come into this package already owning a lot | | By: Sunrise on the Sufferbus | | |

She asked the kids to put their hands up if they knew the correct sound. "Who knows what sound a cow makes?" she asked. Cindy put her hand up and said "Moooo!" "Very good" replied the teacher,"what sound do sheep make?" "Baaaa" answered Jimmy. She continued this for a while. Then she asked, "What sound does a pig make?" All the hands in the class went up. She was surprised at the response. She chose Little Johnny at the back of the class. He stood up, took a deep breath, and screamed, "Up against the wall you son of a bitch!!"

| Jason Taylor might be a Jaguar? Sounds Familar... | | 2008-03-25 22:03:58 | | Huh, look at what Pro Football Talk found. That sounds really, really familiar. Almost like I've read that before. Oh Wait... We did hear about this before. Right here on Big Cat Country, no less. The Miami Herald Blog reports:I have been told by one NFL scout and one NFL assistant coach that Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio (pictured) likes the idea of trading for Taylor. I am not sure exactly how far Del Rio has gone with this -- be it considering it and discarding the idea or actually pursuing the issue. But I do know the scenario of adding Taylor has been on the coach's mind. I will continue snooping around with some league sources and ask Del Rio about it directly at the NFL's annual meeting in Palm Beach next week. We'll soon find out if there is fire associated with this smoke. So there you go, my informed speculation gets a little more interesting. -Chris | | By: Big Cat Country - An Unoffical Jacksonville Jaguar | | |

| The Sights, The Sounds, The Smells | | 2008-02-29 00:30:00 | | Spring Training Game One - Cubs 12 Giants 6
WP - Ryan Dempster (1-0) LP - Noah Lowry (0-1)
Lou Piniella's crew started the 2008 Cactus League schedule with an impressive effort against the Giants. While a win is a win, exhibition game or not, the performances on the field outweighed the final score. Thursday afternoon in Scottsdale featured the debut of Kosuke Fukudome and the deceiving debut of Jose Ceda in a Cubs' uniform. Fukudome reached base in each of his three trips to the plate and recorded an RBI single in the 3rd inning.
Mike Fontenot supplied the big blast, a 3-run home run pinch-hitting for Ryan Dempster in the 3rd. Felix Pie had a very impressive day at the plate, 2-for-2 with 3 runs scored, a walk, a double and a solo home run in the 4th. Ryan Theriot added a 3-for-3 day of his own with 3 runs scored and the Cubs scored 10 of their 12 runs in the first 4 innings.

| This Sounds Familiar | | 2008-01-04 13:04:00 | | Guess who wants back in Green Bay? Mr. Javon Walker. Yes, this is the same Javon Walker who wanted out of Green Bay because the Packers refused to renegotiate his contract following the 2005 season in which he missed most of the year due to injury. The Packers gave him his wish and subsequently traded him to the Denver Broncos during the 2006.After two lackluster and injury plagued seasons for the Broncos, Walker now wants out of Denver as well. During a postseason interview Walker said that the Broncos were not the right fit for him anymore.“Green Bay made me who I was for a team like (the Broncos) to want to bring me here,” Walker is quoted as saying in an interview. “So, maybe it takes a team like that to go back.”Sorry, Javon but the Packers really don’t need an injury plagued receiver with an enormous salary. Green Bay also has one of the top wide receiving groups in the entire league with Pro Bowler Donald Driver, touchdown machine Greg Jennings, and sure handed rookie James Jones. Maybe, Javon Walker needs to put more thought into demanding trades. | | By: West Coast Bias | | |

| The View From Blighty: Smoods Sounds Off On Capello Hire | | 2007-12-20 11:05:00 | | My workmate Smoods (an actual Brit!) had such a good time with his first article, he wrote me another. Actually, two more! But the second will have to wait until tomorrow. Here is the first:So for the first time in about, oh, 18 months, the English national team has a tactically astute foreign coach with a string of club successes on his C.V. This should be interesting. The most amazing thing about first Sven’s and now Fabio Capello’s hirings is the fact that otherwise jingoistic and xenophobic English soccer fans don’t seem to have a problem with it. These are the same fans who sing “I’d rather be a Paki than a Turk” when facing Turkey and who’s rioting led to the cancellation of a game against the Republic of Ireland. And yet there’s barely any protest at a move that screams surrender to Johnny Foreigner. And if the principle is hard to take, the reality should make even more refined fans wince. It used to be that foreign coaches were for the sport’s third-world countries. Hiring a foreigner was like calling in the IMF—it was done by struggling nations wanting to get better. Now, can you imagine Gordon Brown calling in the IMF to help with a tanking British economy? Fuck no! And yet the idea that England has willingly dragged itself down to the level of Chad and Saudi Arabia passes with barely a protest. If you can get past such thoughts, it’s hard to argue with Capello’s qualifications. The man wins trophies and is rightly considered one of the top coaches on the planet. Short of luring Arsene Wenger or Jose Mourinho, the FA has probably found the best man for the job. He’s won the Serie A title with three different clubs over a 15-year period (if you ignore match fixing scandals) and La Liga twice in the only two years he’s coached in Spain. He also won the Champions League with the most jaw-dropping final performance in the competition’s history. But here’s the problem: if England screw up with him in charge, who gets blamed? | Imitation of Sounds a form of Social Communication for Animals | | 2007-12-15 00:06:19 | | Communication in animals is reflexive, meaning it is limited to signals like warning of danger and defining territorial boundaries for instance. Most animals use body language as a means of communication, but sounds and imitations are often used in a subtle manner.Imitation of sounds is a form of social communication for animals. Animals use sounds to communicate through cries, gestures, and mating calls. They are usually understood by the same species. Now you know, so you can start trying to communicate with animals like in the Dr. Dolittle movies. Remember, try to communicate first, shoot later. Lol :) | | By: movie special | | |

I personally prefer the new Lena Chamaylan version: (play music)

| Aeon Flux Sounds like a Laundry Detergent | | 2007-11-23 12:35:01 | | Goodchild regime is against the Monacans who are fighting to see justice in the world, or rather the only surviving city on earth in the Aeon Flux movie. The name sounds like a kind of laundry detergent to me. Aeon Flux…leaves dirt & stains wishing there were not dirty. Heheh :) Do you agree with me?Anyway, the Aeon Flux movie takes advantage of new technology concepts like transfer data through a pill that biologically bring one to dream land while maintaining normal activity for good special effects & story line. Fashion & hair style looks like a modern version of 16th century wear, extravagant & decorative. | | By: internet executive log | | |

| | By: Aldor (Le blog) | | |

| Kitchen Tip #2: Be the Shiznit of the Hiznit (I have no idea what this means, but it sounds cool) | | 2007-09-03 22:39:00 | | To take a breather from the advice giving aka bossing everyone around, I will foray into the world of household recommendations. As today is Labor Day, many will be out grilling a variety of delicacies on their outdoor BBQ. For some, it will be Porky the Pig on a spit; other more health-conscious friends will be julienning some zucchini, eggplant and other veggies, slopping on some marinade and roasting to absolute culinary perfection. A most abhorrent task is scraping the grill post-BBQ. For those who forgo the task, or run from the room with a sudden urgent to-do when others are buzz sawing the grease from the rungs (you know who you are), this may lure you back to the task. So, here goes... drum roll please..... The beautific creation is Reynolds Non-Stick Grill Foil. I am not recommending this product lightly. After grilling baked potato halves and salmon (marinaded in a ginger sesame concoction) atop these sheets, I can attest to their fabulousness. These nonstick sheets are sturdy, have holes to allow for uniform heat and blackening. And cleanup is nil. Into the bin they go. Product: Reynolds Release Non-Stick Grill Foil PROS: extra heavy duty preventing the much-feared tasty bit drop into the flames of hell, perforated for even cooking/blackening and fat drainage thus healthier cooking, non-stick so easy food removal and no need for chemically-overridden greasy non-stick cooking sprays, no grill clean-upCONS: Won't have excuse for post-grill-cleaning spousal/partner/friend guilt session, which has its enjoyments (i.e., prolonged guilting leading to unending expectation of gifts)WHERE: any grocery storeInspiration: A tune to grill by.

| The Psychedelic Sounds Of... | Sounds of Samba - Repenique | | 2007-06-22 16:41:53 | |
The repenique is a common Brazilian drum that is part of the 'batucada' as well as the larger samba school ensembles. It is a high-pitched tom drum (as opposed to the 'caixa' or snare drum) and adds a crucial element to the oceanic samba sound.
Typically, the repenique is played with a stick in one hand (usually the right one) and no stick in the left. The left hand plays the drum as well, but with fingers instead. The stick can produce a powerful rim shot and the bare hand provides both the ability to muffle the sound and also produces a mellower striking tone.

| NIght Watch: The sights and sounds of the Mazda 787B | | 2007-05-20 10:05:48 | | Filed under: Motorsports, Time Warp, Videos, Mazda
Click Image for photo gallery. Follow the jump for video.
The Mazda 787B’s victory at the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans represents the only win for a Japanese manufacturer at the fabled endurance race, and thanks to the car’s 2.6-liter R26B 4-rotor powerplant, it’s also the only time a car has done so with a non-piston engine. In addition to being an important car because of what it accomplished for Mazda, it also happens to be one of the most fantastic-sounding racing cars ever.
In the video we’ve embedded after the jump, you’ll see Kenichi Tanabe, editor of Japan’s Car Graphic magazine, put the Le mans-winning #55 car through its paces at Mazda’s Miyoshi Proving Ground in Hiroshima. The footage is great, but it’s the audio that’ll give you goosebumps. Thankfully, the only soundtrack is the wail of the R26B. No commenters yapping. No stupid music. Just the car. It’s bliss.

| 070707… Sounds like a James Bond spoof! | | 2007-04-27 20:26:53 | | Tell me 070707 isn’t the coolest date ever!? (Guys, you can’t possibly forget that date!)
According to a recent New York Times article, there are so many people tying the knot on 07/07/07, there is a shortage of both venues and vendors - including photographers : )
Given such heated competition for July 7, some couples are having a hard time finding a band, photographers or other wedding professionals. “It is a bit challenging to find vendors who are still available for that date,” said Karle Coppenrath, a wedding consultant and owner of Weddings by Design in Port Townsend, Wash. “Many photographers, for instance, tell me they have been booked since the summer of 2005.
Karle’s absolutely right. We’ve been booked for over a year now, and are lucky enough to have both of our newly aquired photographers, Sian & Fabrice available. We also have two highly talented photographers coming on board in the next month.
