Union City school district has accountant on payroll who lives in South Carolina!
    2008-05-02 12:47:00
Just when you've thought you've seen it all, yet again, something new from Hudson County creeps up and knocks your socks off.Today's Star-Ledger has an intense editorial blasting the plagued Union City school district for having on its payroll and accountant who currently lives in South Carolina! That's right. The State of South Carolina. No, there's no municipality in Jersey named South Carolina. It's that state in the union just below, you know, North Carolina.Of course, it ought not come as much of a surprise that the accountant in question has connections to Union City Mayor Brian Stack, who appoints the school board there. This is the latest in a series of strange developments to come out of the Union City school district. Last month, it was revealed school bus drivers are given six hours of overtime each week -- to charge up cell phones.Oh Hudson County....

Air Products demonstrates mobile hydrogen fueling station in South Carolina
    2008-03-25 15:13:39
A 2005 press image from Air Products."Mobile hydrogen fueling technology." Sound like something you want? Air Products thinks so, and kicked off the company's latest demonstration of its mobile refueling system, this time in Aiken County, South Carolina. Air Products' announcement explains that there is one mobile fueler supplying 5,000 psi (350 bar) hydrogen for one hydrogen ICE truck. Everyone who is opposed to the wastefulness of hydrogen vehicles probably won't be too keen on that. Aiken County officials, like Fred Humes, director of the Aiken County Economic Development Partnership, are gushing about the technology, though. Humes said in a statement that, "By working with Air Products, we have access to the latest in vehicle fueling equipment and a reliable supply of hydrogen. The project team will provide tangible and visible proof that the use of hydrogen as a replacement for gasoline is feasible, safe and reliable." Air Products recently announced a plan to bring ten hydrogen b...

    Tennessee South Carolina Preview
    2008-03-07 10:18:16
South Carolina @ Tennessee SunThe Volunteers have played some of their worst basketballt this season since beating Memphis a few weeks back,k but have lost just once due to their excellent coaching and ability to adjust. It will be senior day for Chris Lofton who has arguably been the face of Tennessee basketball - other than Bruce Pearl - during this resurgence. It will also be Dave Odom's last SEC regular season game as he is "retiring". Maybe Bruce Pearl will have some sympathy for Odom in his game. Probably not. Tennessee should win this one with relative ease.Prediction: TennesseeTennessee South Carolina line spreadThere won't be a line on this one, but if there was I would have to think Tennessee would have to be at least -1500. The point spread should be in the upper teens.Season: 66-20 (77%)SEC: 32-8 (80%)...

    Georgia Travels to South Carolina
    2008-01-29 21:31:33
Georgia @ South CarolinaGeorgia is just 1-4 on the road, but South Carolina is a pathetic 6-5 at home. The Gamecocks are not performing as of late going just 2-6 ATS in their last 8. When South Carolina is winning it is with their backcourt of Devan Downey and Zam Frederick. Dave Odom's club is shooting above 40% from 3 point land. Georgia is having a tough time scoring on the road averaging 10 points less per game. They are led by their backcourt as well of Sundiata Gaines and Billy Humphrey. Whomever can get more out of their frontcourt will win this close game.Prediction: South CarolinaVanderbilt @ Ole MissOle Miss' fairy tale season has taken a detour in recent weeks. The Rebels return to the friendly confines of Tad Smith Coliseum where they are undefeated this year. Andy Kennedy's team is shooting a red hot 51% at home and close to 90 points per game in Oxford. Chris Warren on the outside and Dwayne Curtis on the inside will give Vandy tough matchups. The Commodores are...

    Dissecting South Carolina (D)
    2008-01-26 20:47:00
The results are still coming in, but it looks like Barack Obama will win the South Carolina Democratic primary with more than half of the vote and with more votes than Hillary Clinton and John Edwards combined. Given the margin of his victory and his sufficiently strong performance among White voters (exit poll results here), it appears that the emerging storyline will be that the voters rejected the Clintonian brand of race-baiting politics and really want to move on. The other likely storyline will concern where John Edwards goes from here. Here are some of my thoughts, listed in no particular order:1. The only way John Edwards can win the nomination now is if Clinton or Obama self-destructs somewhere down the road and he becomes the alternative candidate. But barring a total meltdown or fatal gaffe on behalf of his rivals, the only path for John Edwards now leads to amassing delegates, not winning the nomination. He was already in trouble for not winning his must-win state of ...

What South Carolina Means: Barack Obama
    2008-01-25 19:35:00
Note: This is the third and final installment of my three-part series assessing the three remaining Democratic presidential candidates as they pertain to the South Carolina Democratic primary tomorrow. This piece was originally written on January 22 and is currently posted at Pajamas Media. Due to contractual stipulations, this piece cannot be posted on The 7-10 in its entirety at present. However, it will be posted here on Sunday. In short, this piece assesses the three probable media storylines that will emerge from the primary results tomorrow. All of these storylines are predicated on an Obama victory. The differences in storylines all depend on how large his margin of victory is, how balanced his support is, and how the Clinton campaign and the media interpret his performance:Headline 1: Barack Obama wins South Carolina! Black vote critical to Obama’s success! This is the Barack Obama '08 becomes Jesse Jackson '88 scenario.Headline 2: Barack Obama wins South Carolina! Ma...

What South Carolina Means: Hillary Clinton
    2008-01-25 06:09:00
(Note: This is the second in a three-part series assessing South Carolina as it pertains to the three leading Democratic candidates. Yesterday's post addressed John Edwards. Tomorrow's post will address Barack Obama. Today's post looks at Hillary Clinton.)---Hillary Clinton enters the South Carolina Democratic primary in an unfamiliar position: that of the underdog. After leading most polls last year and enjoying the aura of inevitability for the better part of the year, Barack Obama’s victory in the Iowa caucuses and her come from behind victory in New Hampshire have significantly weakened her stranglehold on the party’s presidential nomination. But after notching her second straight primary victory in Nevada, Clinton seems to have regained her footing and is one win away from possibly irreparably deflating the candidacy of her main rival. However, a South Carolina victory appears more elusive than any other victory thus far. After leading South Carolina for much of the pas...

What South Carolina Means: John Edwards
    2008-01-24 05:56:00
(This is the first of a three-part series assessing the South Carolina Democratic primary. Today's installment is about John Edwards. I will write about Hillary Clinton on Friday and Barack Obama on Saturday.)-----Absent Hillary Clinton, John Edwards was supposed to be the frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination this year. A young and affable Southerner who was the Democratic Party’s vice presidential nominee just four years ago, John Edwards should have had the inside track to the nomination. He was a familiar face and emerged from the 2004 campaign less wounded than John Kerry. He had the unique ability to argue that he could win an election in a red state, owned the poverty issue, and had a sharp populist message that resonated with angry and anxious voters who were upset about the lack of affordable health care, the lack of consumer protections, and the perceived exploitation by “big oil companies, big drug companies, and big insurance companies.” And on ...

    South Carolina Debate Analysis (D)
    2008-01-22 11:40:00
Last night the top three Democrats squared off in what was the most cantankerous, liveliest, and probably nastiest debate that has taken place so far this campaign season. The rhetoric often became heated and the accusations were flying fast and furiously. Praising the legacy of Martin Luther King was often followed by accusations of distoring one's records, working with "slumlords," hypocrisy, and not taking stands on previous tough votes. In other words, it was good television for political junkies and pundits who had been waiting for the gloves to come off for ages. Here's how I think the candidates fared:Hillary ClintonClinton was highly aggressive at the debate, as she hit Obama hard over Iraq, healthcare, his voting record in the Illinois legislature, and even his dealings with the shady Tony Rezko. Some of these attacks did not go over well, as she actually received a few boos from the audience. Her main point was that one's record and what one says do matter, and she wanted...

Post-South Carolina State of Affairs (R)
    2008-01-19 23:25:00
South Carolina and Nevada have spoken, and the results have finally produced several distinct tiers of Republican candidates: John McCain and Mitt Romney in the top tier, Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani in the second tier, and Fred Thompson and Ron Paul in the third tier. Because of the sheer chaos that characterizes the Republican race, Republican voters and party operatives are anxiously waiting for signs that someone is breaking out of the pack, as they are not sure who they should rally around. Things might still be muddled right now, but the race is no longer as turbid as it once was.John McCain's South Carolina victory is particularly sweet for him, especially after the way he was vilified in the 2000 primary. Of course, nasty kneecap politics reemerged this time around too, but that McCain was able to survive should serve as a testament to his overall strength and appeal. This victory caps McCain's improbable political comeback and has established him as the Republican fron...

Ad Wars: Spotlight On Michigan, South Carolina
    2008-01-14 15:47:16
Hillary ClintonThe latest ad from the Clinton campaign, "Listen," includes footage from her New Hampshire victory speech. Clinton suggests that she listened to the voters and "found my own voice." The ad also seeks to remind voters of the seriousness of the race--hinting again that Barack Obama isn't ready to be president. The ad is running in South Carolina and Nevada.John Edwards"Mill," the newest Edwards ad airing in South Carolina, returns to his familiar 2004 "son of a mill worker" theme.Rudy GiulianiThe new Giuliani ad, "First Day," suggests he will push for the "largest tax cut in American history" if elected.Mike HuckabeeAn anti-Huckabee group, Victim's Voice, is airing this ad, which previously ran in Iowa, in South Carolina this week. In the ad, Lois Davidson tells the story of her daughter, killed by an Arkansas parolee. The ad concludes by suggesting that if not for Mike Huckabee, Davidson's daughter would be alive today. I never saw the ad during its Iowa run and I'm curious how large the ad buy really is in South Carolina.John McCainThe latest McCain ad, "Michigan Endorsed," trumpets two Michigan newspaper endorsements. The campaign also has a new radio ad, in which McCain tells the story of fellow POW, Mike Christian.Barack ObamaThe Obama campaign has released a new ad, "Moment," in Nevada. In the ad, Obama speaks out against politics as usual and asks voters to move beyond the partisan battles of the past two decades.Mitt RomneyRomney's latest ad, "Pride Of America," is on the air in Michigan. In the ad, Romney talks of his family history in the state and focuses on the economic problems there.Fred ThompsonThompson has a new ad, "Always," airing in South Carolina. The ad suggests Thompson is the most consistent conservative in the field....

    Obamania Hits South Carolina
    2008-01-07 23:20:51
Ok, I may have been wrong about Obama needing NH to guarantee a win in SC.from Rasmussen:The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in South Carolina shows that Barack Obama has opened a double digit-lead over Hillary Clinton in the January 26th Primary Election. It’s Obama 42% Clinton 30%. John Edwards attracts 14% of the vote and nobody else tops 3%....In South Carolina, Obama now attracts 58% of the African-American vote, up from 50% in December. Earlier in the year, Obama and Clinton split this important constituency fairly evenly. Now while Obama enjoys a 2-to-1 advantage over Clinton among African-American voters, white voters are split fairly evenly between three candidates--it’s Clinton 32%, Edwards 29%, and Obama 27%. For Obama, that reflects a 13-point improvement from the previous survey. I do think a Clinton win in NH could make SC a tight race between the two. However what's it say about Edwards that he polls better in Iowa and New Hampshire than he does in his home state? ...

Palmetto State Battle: Clemson South Carolina
    2007-11-24 10:26:00
South Carolina vs Clemson 7:00 ESPN2Line: Clem -3, 53.5Clemson leads 63-37-4So Clemson wet the bed last week and they are out of the ACC title race. They can still stick it to their in state rival South Carolina who has lost 4 games in a row after being ranked as high as #6. Clemson has won 14 of the last 19 games and 8 of the last 10. They have also won 8 of the last 9 meetings in Columbia.QB Cullen Harper is tops in the ACC in passing efficiency and ranks 6th in the nation. The junior has 26 TD passes, a Clemson season record. Those kind of stats were needed this year because the Tigers have not been able to run the ball nearly as well as last year with James Davis and CJ Spiller. If they can get those guys going, it could be a long night for a swiss cheese South Carolina run D.South Carolina scored the final 17 points last year to win at Death Valley 31-28. Clemson missed a very close field goal at the end that would have sent the game to overtime. It looked like the Gamecocks would...

An Open Letter to Waring Howe, South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman

This is the guy who said he'd allow a Colbert campaign over 'my dead body'. Please copy this and email it to him at waringsh@bellsouth.net or call him at 843-722-8269! (change your name obviously)Dear Mr. Howe,I'd like you to reconsider your rejection of the Colbert Campaign. You are missing a huge opportunity that is unlikely to come again unless we vote in another president as unpopular as the current president.By denying Colbert even the chance to run, you are effectively throwing away the youth vote. By allowing Colbert to be on ballot, the percentage of young voters would increase beyond what it has been for years. This has been proven through the '1 Million Strong for Stephen T. Colbert' Facebook group, which, at the time of this writing, has over 1.3 million members. Yes, 1.3 million members.Second, you are denying South Carolina the chance to be a powerful primary state. A Colbert campaign in the state would bring unprecedented media coverage. Not only the media, but a ...

South Carolina Gas Prices are Lowest across U.S.
    2007-07-17 17:45:00
Report: S.C. gas prices are lowest across U.S. State average cost: $2.83, says AAA South Carolinians may complain about paying an arm and a leg to fill up their gas tanks, but they can find comfort in a AAA survey released Monday that shows the state has the cheapest gas in the country. A gallon of regular gas in South Carolina averaged $2.83 on Monday, according to AAA's gas-tracking Web site www.fuelgaugereport.com. That's down .004 cents from Sunday and below the average U.S. price of $3.05 a gallon, which also dropped .004 cents from Sunday. North Carolina has the twelfth-lowest gas price, at an average $2.95 per gallon. The most expensive regular gas can be found in Nebraska at $3.33 a gallon. Prices spiked in the last couple weeks because of outages at several U.S. oil refineries, but "it's starting to dribble down again," AAA Carolinas spokesman Tom Crosby said Monday. Drivers on the Grand Strand are still paying the highest cost for gas in the cheapest state. The M...

Raiders DE McNeal Arrested on Fraud Charges in South Carolina
    2007-07-06 00:09:38
Raiders defensive end Bryant McNeal was arrested on Thursday in South Carolina following a traffic stop for having an outstanding warrant.  The 27-year-old’s warrant was for selling a Land Rover to a pawn broker for $15,000 in Florida when he didn’t own it.  McNeal was with Tampa Bay back in 2005, and reports say that during that summer he didn’t return to claim the car, and Carbucks Corp. tried to collect the title.  The company then found out that McNeal had not paid off a bank loan as well.  The arrest was issued in December of 05 for defrauding a pawn broker. “We take matters of this nature very seriously,” Oakland spokesman Mike Taylor said Thursday. “But until we have all of the facts, it would be inappropriate to comment or otherwise react.”  McNeal on top of the first charge also was served a warrant for writing a bad check for $1,500.  He was signed to the Raiders practice squad last season.  McNeal signed with Tampa Bay in Dece...
