| Awards ceremonies: the top prize is hearing excellent public speakers | | 2008-08-09 11:09:00 | | Arqiva Commercial Radio Awards 2008
Anyone who has read this blog from the start may remember that the very first entry was about last year's Arqiva Commercial Radio Awards, which I was invited to attend as a guest at the Radio Magazine's table.
On 7 July, the event was held once again at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London and compered, as usual, by Virgin Radio's Christian O'Connell.
At these awards, they always have two guest music acts: a newcomer to open and a big name to close the proceedings. This year's closer was James Morrison, who had performed there as the unknown act just a few years earlier. His interview with Christian was positive, enthusiastic and funny and he gave a relaxed performance that was very well-received.
The singer who had the daunting task of going on before the awards started was Jessie. She looks great and has a very powerful voice which sounds at least as good to me as Amy Winehouse or Duffy. She writes her own songs an | | By: Nick R Thomas - A Public Speaker's Blog

| Cell phone speakers complement music handsets | | 2008-06-17 00:41:20 | | One of the best things about reviewing gadgets is the chance to play with something you've never played with before. This time we're not talking about a particularly groundbreaking technology, but even so it's still pretty cool.Though we've reviewed quite a few cell phone speakers, all of the models that we've examined have used a wired connection to the phone. So, we now turn our attention to the Nokia Bluetooth Speakers MD-7W. Simple in form and function, the MD-7W speakers are portable, easy to use, and offer decent audio quality to boost. At $179 they won't come cheap, but we couldn't help but like them.As cell phone speakers go, the MD-7W speakers are on the larger side. Each speaker measures 4.13 inches by 2.6 inches by 2.04 inches and weighs 5.6 ounces. That means they won't slip into your pocket, but you shouldn't have any problem carrying them in a bag or purse. Thanks to magnets in each speaker, you can clasp them together in a single cube for even easier portability. Also, Nokia | | By: Blog Inspiration | | |

| Car Speakers: Value Enhancer of Cars By Garry Kelkar | | 2008-03-01 19:10:18 | | One of the things that go a long way in making the cars likable is speakers. Those wonderful devices that add unlimited attraction to cars. So much so that had they not been inserted in the cars there wouldn't have been much takers for this glorious machine. It is precisely for this reason that cars roll out from the factories after speakers have been fitted in them. Car speakers ensure that people are connected with the world even when they are riding from one town to other. One can catch up with news, or one's favorite programmes or that special bulletin on budget, or the score of Chelsea, Manchester United in the football championship. Thanks to these speakers. With them on, one is ensured that longest of the journeys are rarely felt as time just flies by without giving one the opportunity to get bored or fatigued. Then it is not that one can only listen to radio programmes but one can also listen to one's favourite records as well. | They'll let you know: lessons from public speakers' auditions (part 1) | | 2008-02-29 23:13:04 | | Women's Institute Speaker Selection DaysIt's around this time of year that forms start arriving through the post inviting me to submit my details to the Yearbooks containing details of speakers circulated to their members by Women's Institute County Federations. These lists are useful because not only are they sent out to every WI in a county (and my home county of Dorset has around 145 individual branches, while neighbouring Hampshire has 203 - all of them booking up to 11 speakers per year) but some County Federations also ask if you would like to go on a further list (where fees are left negotiable) to be sold to other organisations. In theory, a WI can book any speaker they can like but the Yearbook usually plays a big part in drawing up the programme for the year ahead.Furthermore, all individual WIs belong to Groups which have two further meetings per year with representatives going along from up to 10 individual Institutes. | Portugese Speakers - trakAxMobile Review | | 2007-11-27 09:30:01 | | Sandro Correia over at mobilidades.net/ pocketPT.net. has given trakAxMobile a very extensive review, including multiple screenshots and a really cool video.
My Portuguese isn’t too hot, but he says
“O TrakaxMobile é um software indispensável para aqueles que gostam de levar as capacidades multimédia dos seus equipamentos a outro nível. Nunca experimentei um software da mesma área tão intuitivo, viciante e capaz de proporcionar longos períodos de divertimento.
Nota final: 4.5 (1-5).”
According to Google Translate that’s pretty good - a very rough translation is:
“trakaxMobile is a software indispensable for those who would like to take the multimedia capabilities of their equipment to another level. Never experienced a software in the same area as intuitive, addictive and able to provide long periods of fun.
Final note: 4.5 (1-5). ”
Sandro has a few minor points, which are completely fair. In regards to the play-bar in the video editing window, we didn’t want to have to decompress the video in this window and we wanted users to be able to go straight to their video in order to edit it. For this reason, you cannot scrub through the video, which would be a great feature but wasn’t possible at this time without decompressing it - but definitely something we will look into. Also if you are having problems saving at ‘Best Quality’, it is more than likely due to a lack of RAM. If you close applications such as Messaging, Contacts, Calendar etc, you should be able to save at ‘Best Quality’ without any difficulties.
Many thanks to Sandro for such a detailed and thorough review and evaluation.
It’s always brilliant to see someone up and running with it and we always appreciate the feedback.

| To be a good visiting speaker you need to visit good speakers! | | 2007-11-14 07:13:55 | | Boscombe and Southbourne ProbusMy third booking last week was a talk for Boscombe and Southbourne Probus on Thursday. I have a great fondness for this club because my first talk there ten years ago led to a couple of amusing incidents which have been extremely popular in talks ever since, as well as being published in 'Nick R's in a Twist!' In fact, it was also at that engagement that someone first suggested that I should publish a collection of my stories. This was my fourth visit and I was pleased to see that a successful recruiting campaign was paying off for them so there were 45 present for my talk about Groucho Marx. It went very well and there was a good question and answer session afterwards - always a bonus!Among the members was Mr Tom Hall, Honorary Secretary of the Southbourne Literary Society where I will be delivering another brand new talk, 'I Must Write That Down: A Commonplace Book', on 21 November. It's always a double bill there, a literary speaker usually followed by a slide show, and I was pleased to learn that my talk will be followed by a presentation from Eric Watson, not only because his subject 'The History of the Bournemouth Fire Brigade' will be of great interest to me, but also because he has an excellent reputation but I have never actually heard him speak (like me, most of his engagements are for meetings of clubs and societies which are not open to non-members).I mentioned in an earlier post about the benefits of repeated listening to recordings by well-known speakers. It is also, of course, hugely informative to actually attend talks and lectures; we can all watch interviewees on TV chat shows or hear extracts from speeches on the news but nothing beats being there in person for an entire live, unedited presentation. As a child, I can't claim that the guests at school speech days paricularly inspired me but when I was eleven, my family took me to a conservation rally at a Purbeck beauty spot where the broadcaster Kenneth Allsop | | By: Nick R Thomas - A Public Speaker's Blog | | |

| A Buddhist view on ban on use of speakers in the night | | 2007-11-13 10:33:24 | | With the supreme courts order banning the use of speakers in night (between 10.00 p.m. to 6.00 a.m.), there is buzz in the society especially in the religious sphere. Noise is today recognized as a serious personal and environmental pollutant troubling everyone to some extent. It causes deafness, stress, and irritation, breeds resentment, saps energy, and inevitably lowers efficiency.Origin of dispute:Interestingly, the sound pollution issue was originated between fractions of Muslims affiliated to two separate mosques located near by in Waligama, Matara. The quarrel reached the supreme courts and the injunction is an interim result of that.Signs of matured society:The court order was taken in good faith by most of the segments of the society. This is good sign that Sri Lankan society has now matured enough to look at pollution and health related issues in broad spectrum without enframed in to narrow religious views. There was very little resistance from Catholic bishops and devotees. It is a religion evolved and practiced mainly in the West where individual freedom having high regard, and the local Catholics seem to have adapted the same approach in practicing their religion. The traditional practice of Hinduism in Sri Lanka is also closer to the nature and non invasive to the society. The Hindus hardly use excessive artificial noise in practice and therefore, they seem to be happy with the new rule.Traditional Buddhist attitude towards noise pollution:Pollution to this extent was unheard of during the time of the Buddha. But there is sufficient evidence in the Pali canon to give us insight into the Buddhist attitude towards the pollution problem. Several Vinaya rules prohibit monks from polluting green grass and water with saliva, urine, and feces. These were the common agents of pollution known during the Buddha's day and rules were promulgated against causing such pollution. The Buddha's attitude to noise is very clear from the Pali canon. | Things to look for when buying car stereo speakers. | | 2007-07-09 19:34:00 | | By Roger Charles 1. How is the speaker's power measured?Pay close attention to the amount of power the speaker can handle. This is particularly important when dealing with woofers, since they require more power to play loudly. Look out for models where the manufacturers exaggerate power. Ensure that power is measures in RMS. Be very wary of terms like "music power" and "peak power". These terms mean nothing when it comes to measuring power.2. | I-MU Vibrating Speakers | | 2007-07-02 11:39:37 | | New at the Random Good Stuff - Gift Shop:
I actually have seen them at the CES 2007 and thought there were pretty cool. Wondering if the design was really meant to be that way or am I the only one who thinks it looks a little perverted? You can see them in action in this video.
Guaranteed to cause consternation amongst office hi-fi bores, this pioneering gizmo is set to become the speaker of choice for fans of forehead-slappingly clever whatsits the world over. It’ll get walls jumping, desks pumping and windows thumping. Cumbersome cabinets? Who needs ’em!
But how does the I-MU Vibro actually work, we hear you ask? Well, boffins over at the Firebox Sonic Research Institute spent seconds examining this super-energy crystal speaker but were too busy catching falling jaws to work it out. And that’s because this sound innovation pumps out amazingly impressive sonics that need to be heard to be disbelieved.
Here comes the science bit…The main component is a tiny p | | By: Random Good Stuff

A few days back, we were talking about some heftily priced luxury speakers and now, we have another one that makes a smashing entry to the list. Proclaim Audio’s DMT-100 speakers have been designed for those true audiophiles who want the best from their speakers.
The patent pending speakers are balanced on high-grade aluminum and stainless steel stand. The integrated technology called driver manipulation allows the users to move the arms and adjust the height of the speakers accordingly to listen to the crisp quality sound. The audiophile stereo speakers feature external crossover instead of internal ones as to deliver the just right acoustic environment in the room. The alien-styled DMT-100 speakers are available in an array of color options, including white with black hardware and the tempting royal purple with satin aluminum hardware. They aren’t cheap as the price tag reads $26,000.
