eBay insect fossil is new species
    2008-08-20 20:05:00
A scientist who bought a fossilised insect on the web auction site eBay for £20 has discovered that it belongs to a previously unknown species of aphid.Dr Richard Harrington, vice-president of the UK's Royal Entomological Society, bought the fossil from an individual in Lithuania. He then sent it off to an aphid expert in Denmark, who confirmed the insect was a new species, now extinct. The bug has been named Mindarus harringtoni after the scientist."I was interested to see what it was because I've worked with a team of people involved in monitoring and forecasting aphids, those of greenfly and their relatives in this country," Dr Harrington told BBC News."I looked at it with my team and we thought we could identify it down to the level of genus, but we had no idea what the species was."Dr Harrington sent the specimen to Professor Ole Heie, a fossil aphid expert in Denmark."He discovered that it was something that hadn't been described before," Dr Harrington explained. The insect itself

Bush Administration Crushes Radical Environmentalists and Trial Lawyers by Weakening the Endangered Species Act
    2008-08-12 19:35:27
For the past 35 years, radical environmentalists and trial lawyers have used the Endangered Species Act as a club to thwart capitalism wherever they find it. While environmentalists argued that they really cared about the snail darter or the spotted owl, the results of endless litigation and confrontation made development throughout the United States more expensive. Consequently, the people harmed most by these policies were America’s poor and middleclass. As the liberal elitists sat passively and supported policies that protected certain obscure species, they also ignored facts about history and nature. It is a fact that 95% of America is undeveloped; this means that if every American doubled his or her land development, 90% of America would still be undeveloped. It is also important to recognize that 99% of all the plant and animal species ever on this Earth are now extinct. Extinction is a natural planetary phenomenon that we will never be able to prevent. So considering these

The ethics of food-8: Interests of species versus interests of individuals
    2008-08-11 09:48:23
By Mano Singham I wrote before that the theory of evolution, by giving all animals equal standing in the evolutionary tree of life, provides a strong argument against the exploitation of one sentient species by another. There seems to be no defensible criteria by which we can prefer the interests of an individual human over that of an individual nonhuman animal, because they each have an interest in avoiding pain and suffering. read more

Endangered Species: Europe's sportscar makers worried about the future
    2008-08-06 04:55:00
With the European Union tightening restrictions on carbon emissions, danger has been spelled out in big bright letters for the sportscar-makers we know and love. The bulk of the world's best supercar manufacturers – including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Aston Martin and Porsche – reside in Europe, but while industry executives continue to campaign for exception and protection, things don't look good. There are, however, a few solutions that could keep the exotic automakers in business and unmolested.Firstly, both automakers and lawmakers agree on the need to reduce weight, which helps neither emissions nor performance. However, weight reduction itself won't bring the supercars below the 120g/km target touted by the EU. One possible solution would be to give niche automakers an exemption, noting that the few cars they produce are rarely driven anyway. According to Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann, exotic automakers like his "are representing Europe to the world" and "are a specie

    Traditional Occupation - Endangered Species
    2008-07-18 23:57:00
A couple “traditional occupation” that consider close to extinction. Some were deemed outdated, while others were regarded simply as ‘having no future’. One thing for sure, most of these jobs were gone because they could not compete with the advancement of new technologies which have caused a shift in the pattern of human’s behaviour. Here their stories…Becak driverBecak (tricycle) DriverBecak is a form of environmental-friendly transport. Once upon a time, becak was more favored type of public transport. Many people preferred to use becak as form of transportation to enjoy the city atmosphere. Even more, many schoolchildren were driven to and picked up by parent’s regular becak driver. Not only the number of becak decreasing, rarely the driver were still at young age. The younger generation prefer to be ojek (motorcycle-taxi) driver then a becak driver. Not only because driving a becak needs more man-power energy, but also the image of a becak driver itself were far from

no, douches are not an endangered species, you're just an idiot
    2008-06-16 17:22:00
I think Picnik just made Photoshop obsolete.... for serious. I love messing around with my pictures to make them more arty, it's so fun and useless. Anyway, my two finals for today went pretty well, I am completely fucked for my next two...or four.... oh well. At least I have new shoes...I went into my dads closet yesterday because I didn't feel like groveling to my mom and I found this jacket and two others I'm adopting as my own. They make my life ~complete~.When I found the leather jacket I went through my usual "HOLY SHIT" motions and called Abigail and dry heaved/moaned into the phone. If you didn't realize "ohhhh myy godddd" and "its so big and black" meant in my conversation there would be so many misunderstandings.Anyway, this is what I've gotten in the past few days. I'm going to force I mean ask my mom to tailor in the jackets, yeah like that'll ever happen.Abigail is getting a new camera which is both good and bad for the blog: I'll be in college/jail for most of the summer

Will Polar Bears Survive or Change into New Bear Species if Polar Bear Mate with Brown or Grizzly Bear a Hybrid Bears, Nanulak, Grolar, Pizzly Bear
    2008-06-16 10:16:12
There is so much concern about the future of the polar bears because of climate changes in the environment with ice melting along with global warming effects. I do think the polar bears are in trouble of becoming instinct entirely in the wild unless the bears find a way to adapt in this new environment around them. I am hoping the polar bear will somehow adapt to the new world filled with many challenges ahead for them. I think is a good chance we could loose the polar bear entirely as we know t

Polar Bears Endangered Species List is Being Considered Maybe, Polar Bear Danger of Extinction Global Warming and Oil Drilling, Now Been Added
    2008-06-02 11:05:09
Is talk going around about the Polar Bears being put Endangered Species list. For the reason of global warming it would the first animal on the list for that reason. It is a good idea to do because out of all the animals I think they are in trouble the most. I think the polar bear is very much in danger of extinction. My opinion it could happen sooner than predicted them to gone from the wild forever. I think they should be put on the list. I would assume that would be an easy decision but no. T

Do you know why global warming is the greatest threat to tropical species?
    2008-05-12 09:12:23
Prof. Know Why answers for your general knowledge and awareness on why global warming is the greatest threat to tropical species: Global warming is the ultimate concern in today’s world, if you care! Nearly every other day, news headlines are flooded with the topic of global warming, although most of us are probably ignorant about the consequences that global warming can actually cause to living beings. The latest research on global warming says that while global warming is expected to be strongest at the poles, it may be an even greater threat to species living in the tropics. Tropical species are accustomed to living in a small temperature range and thus may be unable to cope with changes of even a few degrees, according to an analysis in the last week’s edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The research was led by Tewksbury, an assistant professor of biology at the University of Washington and Curtis A. Deutsch, an assistant professor of at

Cloning For the Revival Of Endangered Species
    2008-01-18 05:26:00
Reproductive cloning is regarded as having a potential for conserving endangered wildlife species. A recent breakthrough in biotechnology has been the successful cloning of endangered wild Asian ox (Bos gaurus). The scientists have successfully cloned the endangered species by electro fusing fibroblasts cells from the animal’s skin with enucleated bovine oocytes. The genome of the animal was gaurus in origin whereas the mitochondrial DNA was bovine. In the future, the same technique may be used to clone an extinct bucardo mountain goat from preserved cells by using the present day goats as host mothers. Cloning is definitely going to enhance the biodiversity by ensuring the existence of rare breeds and endangered species. The National Institute of Science and Media keeps a close eye on the latest developments in the world of life science. Joel Ball is a well known authority on biotechnology and has many titles published under the NISM name.

    Animal Prints-Not an Endangered Species
    2007-09-18 15:40:00
Animal Prints do not seem to be dying out anytime soon.  Keep animal prints in check though and limit to accessories.  An animal print scarf looks chic and slightly Bridget Bardot retro when tied as a headband.  Animal prints are even showing up on jewelry, a low cost, low commitment way to give a nod to the trend.  Grrr… Adventurous souls can give an animal print blouse a shot.  Seen on the runways, the animal print blouse will definitely be making appearances on the streets.  A subtle print works best in integrating with other travel neutrals.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported that a man in the central province of Anhui saw and shot footage of a "big white animal" in the Yangtze river on Aug. 19. The Chinese Academy of Sciences has confirmed that the animal in the footage was a white flag dolphin, it said.

    Endangered Species by Tank Theory
    2007-08-16 14:54:00
I hadn't visited Tank Theory for while now until I received their newsletter, and so today I checked out their new designs in the Artist Society section (which is my favorite anyway). And what do I see in the Artist Society section? Endangered Species, the newest design of Steve Wilson! And if the name doesn't ring a bell, let me just tell you that Steve Wilson is the creator of the Toxic Spill t-shirt, one of the most popular t-shirts from Tank Theory ever. Love it, love it, love it! Actually... love him, love him, love him! This psychedelic style of his designs is just amazing; images of animals, humans, beauty and mind just come out and disappear into extinction just like thoughts, memories, and old scents in our head... OK, I know I sound melodramatic but hey, I'm just a desperate t-shirt hunter who just found the perfect prey but he's missing his spear! lol...

    Species - Sitre Torah
    2007-08-06 01:09:00
כ"א באב תשס"זToday's Hebrew letter tarot reading was performed during the planetary hour of the moon with the third quarter waning moon 49% full. The 3 letters in order:zayin-nun-pei זנףThese 3 letters form no shoresh in this order. Consequently, to designate meaning, I broke the configuration into 1 word and 1 letter. זן פThe new configuration - זן פ - means "species" or "variety of" (זן) the letter pei (פ), where pei signifies hidden esoteric knowledge. In other words, the esoteric energy of Sitre Torah is being brought down to nurture (זן) the world and remove negative influences through my humble jewitcheries. As the influence of the moon is waning, the power of malchut is waxing, to bring the esoteric energy into actualization and manifestation.

5 Female Species The Sex Kitten, The Cute Cute, The Good Buddy, The Brain & The Little Princess This is not to teach you the tricks of picking up chicks, but to allow you to understand what goes on behind whatever they are thinking. Listed are also some insights that men such as us should have. I am no expert at picking up girls, in fact, all these things I am about to tell you are from my personal experiences and observations with friends. If you are reading this, then you must have nothing better to do or have not been on a date since you started watching Spin, which by the way should be cancelled along with Under One Roof. To maximise reading pleasure, you should be male, in your 20s and can relate to Chandler from Friends - before he started bonking Monica. Anyway, let’s get started with the chick info: The Sex Kitten Who is a Sex Kitten? Good question. A Sex Kitten is someone who is really hot in the office, or someone you just saw sipping Vodka Ribena at a club. Usually

Species TulipTulipa humilis var. pulchella Albocaerula Oculata Group(TOO-li-puh) (HEW-mil-is)LiliaceaeThis flower just increased my love for Specie Tulips. Everything about it was pretty much perfect, even if its name is a mouthful. Here is a good web page for information about Botanical Tulips. Whenever someone asks for a tulip planting I always try and include a few separate groups of the Specie Tulips. They are reliably perennial and they seem slightly less palatable to the deer then the showier hybrids. I am not saying deer don’t eat these flowers but I have seen them leave them alone. I took this photograph in the Rock Garden at the NYBG. It is a really amazing place and if you are after some pictures you can usually find something of interest there. The garden is closed November-March. I am not sure what the beginner photography class thought of the guy laying on this stomach taking a picture of a 3 inch high Tulip but it was worth it.
