Limiting Free Speech (3): Hate Speech
    2008-07-23 08:21:29
(source) Hate speech (or antilocution, or fighting words) is speech that incites other people to hate a certain group in society defined by common characteristics (race, gender, religion etc.). It usually also incites to commit violence and discrimination based on hatred. The most famous case is that of the Danish Muhammad cartoons. These cartoons led to worldwide [...]

Limiting Free Speech (2): Holocaust Denial
    2008-07-22 08:30:09
(source) In the introductory post of this series, I summarized the dangers of limiting free speech while at the same time granting that such limits are necessary in some cases. One case is Holocaust denial, or Holocaust revisionism as it is referred to by its supporters. What is Holocaust denial? Holocaust deniers only rarely claim that the Holocaust [...]

    Limiting Free Speech (1): Introduction
    2008-07-22 04:21:07
(source) I’m a strong defender of human rights in general and of free speech in particular. But I’m also convinced that the system of human rights is not a harmonious whole and that some rights can conflict; some rights may harm other rights, in which case one right has to be limited for the sake of [...]

She drove a hundred miles so my speech gave them smiles!

Sturminster Newton Women's Institute My first talk this month was on the Power of Humour in Everyday Life and my audience was the WI in the ancient north Dorset town of Sturminster Newton. Trying to get there and back in the evening from Bournemouth by public transport would have been pretty much impossible so I travelled by train to Poole and was met by their Speaker Secretary Heather Johnson. Heather comes from Cheshire and when I mentioned my speaking hero Blaster Bates, she told me that when she was the Deputy Head of a large school there, Blaster had given talks to the pupils - and had managed to censor his usual, earthy style to accommodate his impressionable audience! Stuminster Newton WI meet in the Exchange, an attractive new £2.6 million multi-purpose venue built on the site of what was once one of the largest livestock markets in Britain. The meeting was in the Chivrick room which faces out into the street and it's always interesting when

Obama Gives National Security and Iraq Speech
    2008-07-16 11:16:00
On Tuesday, Barack Obama gave an important speech on national security and the war in Iraq. Tuesday’s speech called for two more troop brigades to be sent to Afghanistan. John McCain was forced to follow suit Tuesday afternoon as Obama led the way on national security. Obama said on Tuesday, “imagine, for a moment, what we could have done in those days, and months, and years after 9/11. “We could have deployed the full force of American power to hunt down and destroy Osama bin Laden, al-Qaeda, the Taliban, and all of the terrorists responsible for 9/11, while supporting real security in Afghanistan,” Obama added. Obama went on to say, “we could have secured loose nuclear materials around the world, and updated a 20th century non-proliferation framework to meet the challenges of the 21st. Instead, we have lost thousands of American lives, spent nearly a trillion dollars, alienated allies and neglected emerging threats - all in the cause of fighting a war for w

The human rights of America's 9/11 victims are not a priority for UNHRC's Richard Falk, the special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, who engages in 9/11 conspiracy propaganda, while working for an organization headquartered in New York City funded by U.S. tax dollars. Hillary delivers amazing speech, changes Web site already
    2008-06-07 12:49:00
The Hillary Clinton who delivered a speech just moments ago was incredible. In fact, as they're already saying on TV, had she been as graceful and classy as she was today in ending her campaign, and in endorsing Barack Obama, at other times during her campaign, perhaps things may have turned out differently for her. At any rate, more on that later. For now, check out this photo of her Web site, where she's already encouraging a transition to help Obama's campaign.

Change - Barrack Obama’s Victory Speech
    2008-06-04 12:11:22
It took a long while coming, but it finally happened. Barrack Obama is the Democratic Party’s nominee for president. Whatever happens in the coming U.S. elections, Obama’s inspiring nomination victory speech from St. Paul, Minnesota, will not be soon forgotten by this generation. A snip from his speech: The journey will be difficult. The road will be long. I face this challenge with profound humility, and knowledge of my own limitations. But I also face it with limitless faith in the capacity of the American people. Because if we are willing to work for it, and fight for it, and believe in it, then I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the

Bloggers Unite: Human Rights includes Free Speech
    2008-05-18 08:41:33
BLOGGERS UNITE is an initiative designed to harness the power of the blogosphere to make the world a better place. By challenging bloggers to blog about a particular social cause on a single day, a single voice can be joined with thousands of others to help make a real positive difference. Today e-mail allows groups to grow from a dozen friends to a hundred hobbyists to a huge, national organization. Meanwhile, blogging is transforming journalism, and websites like Wikipedia and the Internet Archive are part of a new Library of Alexandria being built online. In countless ways, the Internet is radically enhancing our access to information and empowering us to share ideas with the entire world. Free speech thrives online, freed of limitations inherent in other media and created by traditional gatekeepers.Preserving the Internet's open architecture is critical to sustaining free speech. But this technological capacity means little without sufficient legal protections. If laws can censor yo

    Charlie Chaplin's Greatest Speech
    2008-05-04 03:12:25
' Most people remember Charlie Chaplin for his silent comedic films, but Chaplin was much more than just a genius with his non-verbal communication. He was a master at vocal communication as well, and this can be seen from his speech in the movie "The Great Dictator".This speech was choosen as the best movie speech according to List Universe.Charlie Chaplin’s Speech in "The Great Dictator" When I saw this speech, I was awestruck…. Charlie Chaplin, famous for his comedic monologs, actually pulled off one of the most powerful speeches of all time.Whats more, he achieved it without the use of gestures with his arms. What he did employ, however, was the use of the powerful facial expression. His voice is firm and dramatic, with the proper emphasis when it is needed. Chaplin changes speed smoothly and easily, and this helps to highlight the points that he is trying to make. For example, he suddenly slows down and extends the word “Greed…” (1.42) for emphasis. His voice, rich with co

Free Speech For Chaplains: Executive Order Needed
    2008-04-29 11:52:00
So, for about the last four years or so, Military Chaplains have been taking heat over invoking the name Jesus in their prayers. Slowly at first. But now becoming commonplace. About a year and a half ago, it was supposed that this issue was being dealt with. Apparently, it didn't happen after all.I delved into this issue a bit earlier on, back in October 2007. You can skim through that article HERE whilst also addressing a similar but separate topic; http://hoopyfrooddude.blogspot.com/2007/10/freedom-of-speech-not-for-military.htmlNow, spearheading a campaign to preserve the First Amendment, in the form of free speech for military chaplains, the ACLJ along with Congressman Walter Jones of North Carolina are calling for an Executive Order from the President. A petition is being circulated to allow and protect a military chaplains right to pray as their faith dictates.HERE is the ACLJ page regarding this issue; http://www.aclj.org/TrialNotebook/Read.aspx?id=612Whatever an individual thin

Murtha Denies Obama Credit for Iraq Speech, Praises Reagan Administration
    2008-04-04 00:51:26
The man who was made famous by his post invasion opposition to the war in Iraq is brushing off Obama’s pre-invasion anti-war stance. John Murtha (D-Pennsylvania) became popular after he spoke out against the war after he was given the gift of hindsight. "Obama had a nice view from the outside. It is easy when you are outside to make a statement like that. When you are inside, you have a responsibility to try and work this thing out. I don't know that [his speech] had an impact. I didn't even know about the speech. A lot of people said a lot of things," Murtha said. Murtha has endorsed Senator Clinton which came as a surprise to many. There were many pundits and experts that thought Obama’s stance on the war before the invasion would be a big factor in deciding who to endorse. Based on Murtha’s statement about Obama’s speech he is trying to shoulder off his responsibility for his vote by saying inside the beltway politicians had more reasons to go into Iraq.

    Obama's Speech: The Political Impact
    2008-03-20 11:43:00
The big political story this week concerns the much-anticipated speech on race that Barack Obama gave in Pennsylvania. This speech was mainly in response to the controversy surrounding the firestorm brought about by remarks from his pastor Jeremiah Wright, but one can't help but wonder if it was also in response to the lingering racial tone the presidential race has taken over the past few months starting with Oprah Winfrey's endorsement of his campaign and Bill Clinton's race-baiting in South Carolina. Many pundits have already written about this speech and came to various conclusions. Liberal Democrats who liked Obama generally liked his speech and felt energized by his uplifting rhetoric. Many claimed that it was the best speech since "I Have a Dream." Conservative Republicans who didn't like him much to begin with were generally unimpressed. Some of them said it was more political than courageous. But liberals and conservatives are not the people Obama needed to address. The au

2008 New York Auto Show: Chrysler CEO Nardelli Bracing Speech
    2008-03-20 11:09:00
Bob Nardelli, chairman and CEO of Chrysler LLC, made a valiant effort to sound like one in his kickoff speech on Wednesday at the 2008 New York Auto Show.Chrysler Chief Executive Bob Nardelli said Wednesday that the automaker was braced for a worsening U.S. economy, and had not planned on U.S. auto sales rebounding in the second half of the year.In the opening speech of the New York Auto Show, Nardelli said the automaker had an "aggressively conservative" business plan, and vowed that "in the not too distant future Chrysler will return to profit.""We did not build in a second-half recovery" into its forecasts, Nardelli said. "If we were wrong and the economy worsens enough, we'll be quick to adjust."Chrysler's internal numbers indicate that it lost $2.9 billion last year on operations and restructuring costs, the Free Press has reported.Under the 80% ownership of Cerberus Capital Management, Nardelli has ordered job cuts of up to 12,000 workers, required white-collar workers to take va

I hope to be able to delve into it in depth a little later in the week however it is in my mind the single greatest speech given by an American political leader since Ronald Reagan's speech at Point Du Hoc.

    Obama's Speech. . .
    2008-03-18 16:45:37
Over at MSNBC and CNN etc,. I'm sure they are fawning over this speech. They just don't get it. He fell right for the Clintons' trap (they wanted to do this to him in SC). He did not repudiate J-Wright. He is now the "black candidate." I'd look for those polls in Penn to keep widening . . .especially when looking at the race gap. This is what Hillary wanted the whole time. This is the year... Click the Headline Link to Visit Copious Dissent and Read the Full Story.

Florida Governor Addresses Property Taxes in State of the State Speech
    2008-03-06 00:00:00
When Florida Governor Charlie Crist delivered his State of the State address earlier this week, many listeners were eager to hear his take on property taxes. As we have written before (here, here, and here), property taxes have long been a contentious issue in Florida. From the Miami Herald: . . . Gov. Charlie Crist turned his 30-minute address into a laundry list of his initiatives, making scant mention of the state's economic turmoil or solutions for getting the state out of its jam.Instead, the governor flatly declared that Florida faces ''extraordinary economic times'' and moved on.His recipe for improving the economy: a call to legislators to stay the course ``by keeping taxes low, by creating jobs and fueling an economy that ranks ahead of most nations of the world.''. . .The statement stood in stark contrast to the speech given hours before in the same chamber, the Florida House of Representatives, by House Speaker Marco Rubio of West Miami. In his impassioned address to legisla

No Free Speech For Students On The Web

UPDATE:Apparently the student in question attempted to publicly apologize to the principal for the comments, but the principal wasn't adult enough to accept. While I await Blogger's response to the template problems I figured I might as well still keep the site somewhat updated. The following story should never have gotten so far as to be discussed, because it is nothing short of ludicrous. This story conjures up memories of the school that banned their students from going to Myspace ... while at home. Yep, you heard me. A school banned their students from any Myspace activity at school, or at home. The truly sad part is how some parents supported the school being able to tell their kids what they could, and could not, do in their own homes. That was clearly an abuse of authority on the school's part, and severely crossed the line.As hard as it might be to believe, I think this latest story goes even further in illustrating just how far schools will go to seize control of your child

    Free Speech, or Agree Speech?
    2008-02-22 08:28:57
One of the problems I wrote about in my book deals with the freedom of academics to espouse their belief in creationism. A teacher was denied tenure just because he said that creationism should be explored just like any scientific theory. This story is featured at http://www.evolutionnews.org/2008/02/protect_the_rights_of_teachers.html. They not only deny tenure to those who believe in intelligent creation, but now they will deny tenure to someone who believes that creationism should be studied scientifically. Why is science afraid of that? You would think that they would welcome a serious study so that they could use the information to destroy it. Are they afraid that it might be plausible? I think so. The truth about their lies needs to be exposed to the masses so that they can see just what they are staking their eternity on before it's too late! There is a petition supporting academic freedom at http://www.academicfreedompetition.com/ . Let them know that freedom, like the truth is

Karen Armstrong on free speech and contraditions in western values | Europe's anxieties about Islam
    2008-02-14 21:07:24
In Guardian, prominent author and religious scholar Karen Armstrong wrote on the issue free speech in the context of Danish Cartoon back in July 2007. She is also the author of two biographies of the Prophet, Muhammad: A Biography of the Prophet and Muhammad: A Prophet of Our Time.Quoted below is from her article: An inability to tolerate Islam contradicts western values:"In the 17th century, when some Iranian mullahs were trying to limit freedom of expression, Mulla Sadra, the great mystical philosopher of Isfahan, insisted that all Muslims were perfectly capable of thinking for themselves and that any religiosity based on intellectual repression and inquisitorial coercion was "polluted". Mulla Sadra exerted a profound influence on generations of Iranians, but it is ironic that his most famous disciple was probably Ayatollah Khomeini, author of the fatwa against Salman Rushdie. This type of contradiction is becoming increasingly frequent in our polarised world (...)(...) the cartoonis

Archbishop faces fresh pressure over Queen’s ‘worry’ at Sharia speech
    2008-02-13 03:34:00
The Times has learnt that the Prince of Wales has already distanced himself from the Archbishop’s speech last week, fearing that his comments have damaged multi-faith relations.According to The Daily Telegraph today, the Queen is also distressed over the controversy which she fears threatens to undermine the authority of the Archbishop and damage the Church of England, which already faces schism over homosexual clergy. The Queen has become increasingly interested in multi-faith issues. She used her last Christmas speech to call for all religions to work together to bridge the divide between young and old. The broadcast also featured unprecedented scenes from a mosque, a Hindu temple and a Jewish reception. The Prince of Wales, who will take the title Defender of the Faith when he becomes king, has said previously that he wished to be seen rather as a defender of faiths. However, his wish for a multi-faith coronation was dismissed by the Church of England which asserted the importance o

    Who Liked the Speech?
    2008-01-28 19:32:07
President Bush's last State of the Union speech is complete; now it's time for the critics. Chances are if you are a Republican you thought the speech was great, likewise, if you're a Democrat you thought the speech was lousy. Being unaffiliated with either party, I found the speech uneventful. Ironically, I just read last year's speech for yesterday's entry, so I was disappointed to hear some of the same lines being repeated. Being his last State of the Union speech I expected something more. Of course there are very few accomplishments that he can point to which could have added that something more. The speech was definitely far from inspiring. It would take too long to fully critique the speech, but there were a few things that bothered me. He talked about cutting a list of programs that would save 18 billion dollars, even if this was accomplished in one year it would hardly impact the federal deficit which is reported to be 250 to 350 billion dollars. And without knowing

Barack Obama’s Victory Speech in South Carolina
    2008-01-27 01:52:40
South Carolina Democrats stood up and told America that they want change on Saturday. Barack Obama won a resoundingly large victory in South Carolina over Hillary Clinton and the message of hope is stronger than ever. “Yes we can!” echoed loudly across South Carolina as Barack Obama’s campaign gained some much needed momentum along with a mandate for an end to the Clinton machine tactics. The results from Saturday’s election show that there is certainly hope in this election. Obama’s message in this campaign, hope, got a loud victory in South Carolina that will carry him farther into Super Tuesday. The 9:00 P.M. victory speech from Columbia, South Carolina left me with two words, goose bumps. Many people have described his speeches as giving them goose bumps during this election and it happened again on Saturday night. The message of unity and the vivid words from his speech that describe what brings us together made his message even more palpable. Inspirational is an

Speech of pope Urban II at Clermont 1095 (Account of Fulcher of Chartres)
    2008-01-23 05:30:00
Krey, "The First Crusade: The Accounts of Eyewitnesses and Participants" "Let hatred therefore depart from among you, let your quarrels end, let wars cease, and let all dissensions and controversies slumber. Enter upon the road to the Holy Sepulcher-, wrest that land from the wicked race, and subject it to yourselves. That land which, as the Scripture says, `floweth with milk and honey' was given by God into the power of the children of Israel. Jerusalem is the center of the earth ; the land is fruitful above all others, like another paradise of delights. This spot the Redeemer of mankind has made illustrious by his advent, has beautified by his sojourn, has consecrated by his passion, has redeemed by his death, has glorified by his burial. "This royal city, however, situated at the center of the earth, is now held captive by the enemies of Christ and is subjected, by those who do not know God, to the worship the heathen. She seeks, therefore, and desires to be liberated and cease

Speech of pope Urban II at Clermont 1095 (Account of Robert the Monk)
    2008-01-23 05:28:00
Krey, "The First Crusade: The Accounts of Eyewitnesses and Participants"In the year of our Lord's Incarnation one thousand and ninety-five, a great council was celebrated within the bounds of Gaul, in Auvergne, in the city which is called Clermont. Over this Pope Urban II presided, with the Roman bishops and cardinals. This council was a famous one on account of the concourse of both French and German bishops, and of princes as well. Having arranged the matters relating to the Church, the lord pope went forth into a certain spacious plain, for no building was large enough to hold all the people. The pope-then, with sweet and persuasive eloquence, addressed those present in words something like the following, saying: "Oh, race of Franks, race from across the mountains, race beloved and chosen by God, - as is clear from many of your works,- set apart from all other nations by the situation of your country as well as by your Catholic faith and the honor which you render to the holy Ch

    Clinton Speech Gets Icy Response
    2008-01-15 00:11:12
Senator Clinton spoke before a mostly silent crowd on Monday. Clinton was speaking before a crowd of union workers in New York where she received a lukewarm reception from the audience. The crowd did not meet her arrival with the fierce applause she might be used to hearing, instead she got steady clapping mixed with occasional boos. The New York Times reported that less than half of the crowd gave her a standing ovation when she left. The cold reception was due to recent comments made by Senator Clinton and former President Bill Clinton. Senator Clinton made the comment that it took President Johnson’s signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for Martin Luther King’s work to become reality. Here is what she said: “I would point to the fact that that Dr. King’s dream began to be realized when President Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, when he was able to get through Congress something that President Kennedy was hopeful to do, the president before had not even tried, but it took a president to get it done. That dream became a reality, the power of that dream became real in people’s lives because we had a president who said we are going to do it, and actually got it accomplished.” Clinton came under sharp, and deserved, criticism for her comments because they minimized Dr. King’s work and his ability to bring about change for African Americans. Clinton’s strategy in the campaign lately has been to cast herself as a “doer” and Barack Obama as a “talker”. There are plenty of other examples from history she could have tried to use but to use MLK shows total lack of judgment or it was done deliberately to ignite the race issue. After Obama’s campaign responded to her comments she immediately tried to cast Obama, personally, as trying to push the race issue. People are tired of this kind of cheap campaigning and the people in this crowd were smart enough to show her enough is enough.
