    2008-06-25 23:00:00
This Donald Duck cartoon from 1943 ("The Spirit of '43") has a message: work hard for the war effort, and use your money for income taxes and not for personal consumption. Takeaway line: "[E]very American should pay his or her income tax, gladly and proudly. This year, thanks to Hitler and Hirohito, taxes are higher than ever before." Check out the history of federal income tax rates here, including 1943 when rates ranged from 19 percent to 88 percent (they would increase to 23 to 94 percent in 1944). More on income taxes here.

Stover: RB ad spending ‘probably more’ than rest of MLS
    2008-06-24 14:58:00
The New York Red Bulls this year spent "probably more than any team in Major League Soccer on advertising," the team's new managing director Eric Stover told local media in a recent roundtable discussion. "We invested a significant amount of money in advertising, it just wasn’t TV based," said Stover in response to a question about why the team has not purchased television ads. "It was very expensive to put up those Juan Pablo and Jozy billboards up in New York City at the tunnels. That’s the kind of media buy that has never been done in Major League Soccer before." The discussion's transcript was posted on the team's official blog earlier today.Whether these investments have paid dividends is a matter of debate. The teams has averaged 13,525 fans in seven games this season, which is only slightly better than the 12,979 it averaged in 2007 matches not involving David Beckham. (If the Beckham match and its 65,000 plus attendance figure is factored in, the team's average gate was 16,

Rothman votes againt further Iraq War spending

U.S. Rep. Steve Rothman, D-Fairlawn, a vocal member of the Out of Iraq Caucus, opposed further funding for the war in Iraq if it is not linked to the safe redeployment of U.S. troops out of Iraq. The congressman issued the following statement about his vote:“Tonight, I voted against a $165.4 billion funding bill for the war in Iraq. At a time when Americans are facing rising food costs, higher prices at the pump, home foreclosures and failing roads, sewers and bridges, it is irresponsible to continue to misuse our military forces, and misspend our finite U.S. tax dollars to continue to police the Iraq civil war. With no clear end in sight, estimates show that the war in Iraq could ultimately cost the United States up to $3 trillion. The Department of Defense is spending an estimated $10.3 billion a month on operating costs in Iraq — while here at home our economic resources are exhausted.“I will only support funding for the Iraq war if it is linked to beginning the immediate r

BMW spending another billion in the U.S. to expand
    2008-06-14 13:25:00
Heavy fluctuations in the value of the U.S. dollar versus the Euro has made building vehicles in the U.S. a very attractive proposition for European automakers. BMW is looking to expand its U.S. operations by spending over $1B to increase capacity at its South Carolina plant, add more parts distribution centers, and expand its U.S. headquarters in New Jersey. The majority of the money, about $750M, will be spent on increasing production at its plant South Carolina plant from 160,000 units to 240,000 by 2012. The move makes abundant sense given the fact that the German automaker is taking a massive hit by shipping vehicles from higher cost Europe to the lower cost U.S.BMW is spending $100M on expanding its headquarters and another $170M to increase parts distribution centers, which should be welcome news for BMW owners who can face high wait times for parts. BMW has been tearing up the sales charts in the U.S. for quite a while, and with an added $1B getting spent on facilities Statesi

Get Organized: Auto Organization Decreases Gas Spending
    2008-05-19 07:53:00
Organizing your vehicle, its maintenance, and its use can save you BIG on gas money. Here's how:(1) Do your research.Look at websites like GasNearU and GasBuddy to determine the stations that have the lowest gas prices in your local area. (I found the cheapest option on GasBuddy.)(2) Plan ahead. Before stepping out of the house, make a list of all the errands that you need to run. Then map out your tasks by determining what's nearby or on your way and plan the most gas efficient route. Feeling overwhelmed? Or maybe just lazy? The program Remember the Milk will do this entire step for you...(3) Stay on schedule, be on time.Knowing when your car needs to go into the shop for tune ups, oil changes, and tire rotations is only half the battle. Making and keeping the maintenance appointments are the second half. By accomplishing each half, your car will remain the well-oiled machine that it was made to be...all while helping stretch the gas as far as it can go!(4) Purge to remove excess weigh

MasterCard Profit Doubles on International Spending
    2008-04-29 13:46:08
April 29 - MasterCard Inc., the world's second-biggest credit-card network, said profit more than doubled, earning more than rival Visa Inc. as international revenue rose. The shares surged as much as 14 percent. First-quarter net income increased to $446.9 million, or $3.38 a share, from $214.9 million, or $1.57, a year earlier, the Purchase, New York-based company said today in a statement. Excluding gains from special items, profit was $2.59 a share, exceeding the $2 average estimate of 20 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. MasterCard has beaten analysts' profit estimates every quarter since Chief Executive Officer Robert Selander took the company public in May 2006. The network, which generates half its revenue from overseas, is less reliant on the U.S. than Visa, which gets about two-thirds from domestic transactions. MasterCard increased prices on cross-border fees in the quarter, driving a 29 percent gain in overall revenue. ``MasterCard has

    Consumer Spending vs. Consumer Buying
    2008-04-17 19:15:36
I was listening to a report on consumer spending this week that left me unsure about the statistic. After reporting that consumer spending was up a little bit last month, the reporter went right into the fact that prices are also up. There wasn't much detail given, and I was left wondering if consumer spending was up because things cost more or if it was because people were buying more things. With some of the sharp increases in prices we have been seeing, it may be possible that we could buy less and actually spend more. Is consumer spending based on the dollar amount spent or the quantity of product bought? This seems like another economic statistic that could be misleading. I'm no economic expert, but I think there is a big difference between how much we are spending and how much we are buying. If we are spending more and buying less, this would be a bad sign for our economy. Like most economic statistics, I think we need a little more information on this one.

IRS Spending As Much on Publicizing and Processing Stimulus Rebate Checks as Was Spent on Super Bowl Ads: $200 Million
    2008-03-28 00:00:00
"Dear Taxpayer," it starts off. "We are pleased to inform you that the United States Congress passed and President George W. Bush signed into law the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, which provides for economic stimulus payments to be made to over 130 million American households. Under this new law, you may be entitled to a payment of up to $600 ($1,200 if filing a joint return), plus additional amounts for each qualifying child." You might have received this junk-mail-esque notice in the mail the other day. You probably did, in fact, because the IRS spent $42 million mailing them: essentially taxpayer-funded campaign ads for incumbent politicians. And that $42 million is just to mail notices that the checks will be mailed in a few months, not the rebate checks themselves. The notice doesn't even tell you how much you'll be getting or when it will be mailed, making it less informative than these Tax Foundation blog posts. It turns out the IRS was just getting wa

The SAVE Act and Pork Spending: A New Bi-partisan Era?
    2008-03-13 05:20:00
As hard as it is to believe, could we be witnessing the beginning of a new era in BI-Partisan politics? While I hold no overly exuberant hope for that, we may at least be seeing politicians putting aside party lines to start getting the jobs done for which they were elected.Nah, not likely. But, we now have TWO, count'em TWO examples of this this week in both the SAVE Act and the Pork Spending.McCain is only one of six members of the Senate who doesn't go for earmarks. I guess that's one plus I can give him. And he has brought the issue up many times, usually to be defeated not only by Democrats, but recently by some of those in his own party. Obama and Clinton are joining McCain in this call for a one year hiatus in earmarks. Rep.'s and Dem.'s in agreement? Astonishing.Even Pelosi has jumped on this bandwagon, but with a considerable number of aides seeing this bill failing, it's really not much of a risk for her. Even if it passes, it's only for one year. But that's at least $15 billi

Japan Capital Spending Falls 7.3%; GDP May Be Lowered
    2008-03-04 21:47:00
Japanese business investment fell at the fastest pace in five years last quarter, signaling the government will trim its economic growth estimate next week.Capital spending excluding software slid 7.3 percent in the three months ended Dec. 31 from a year earlier, the Ministry of Finance said today in Tokyo. The government will use today's report to revise its estimate of gross domestic product March 12. Preliminary fourth-quarter GDP grew an annualized 3.7 percent.Profits, eroded by a stronger yen and higher costs of oil and raw materials, fell the most since the economy was emerging from a recession more than five years ago, today's report showed. Slower growth may prompt the Bank of Japan to cut interest rates, already the lowest among major economies, this year.

    Spending Like It's 1992
    2008-02-16 10:33:00
The Alberta election campaign is in full swing and the ruling Progressive Conservatives are off like a herd of turtles. Stumbling out of the gate with missteps and mistakes, Premier Ed Stelmach set the tone early with his ever-changing number of ‘new doctors’ promises. First poor Eddie loses his ‘personality’ to a smarmy blogger, and then he loses several hundred doctors on the way from Edmonton to Calgary. The local media, while loving the idea of the incumbent tripping, let these problems go by chalking them up to naivety. But now that we are in the heart of the competition, Stelmach’s habit of problematic promises has taken center stage. The Steady Eddie Money Machine has made campaign promises that are right out of a previous era – one that nearly crippled our economy. It makes you wonder if Don Getty and Dick Johnson are working behind the scenes for the Elect Ed team. When a novice politician is running for office, the mistake often made is to run up the bill on goodies.

    Spending money on personal luxuries
    2008-02-01 05:07:35
I've read a few articles about the philosopher Peter Singer, who, if I understand his ideas correctly, believes that all life has equal value, and that consequently we should all be vegetarians, and to take things to an extreme, that it's amoral for anyone to have luxuries while others are suffering. It's an interesting idea-- if you assume that each person who works as hard as they can, to the best of their ability, is equally deserving of rewards, how do we justify the different levels of luxury enjoyed by CEOs vs. teachers vs. people who work in factories in China? And are any of those people, all of whom have an income that can probably meet their basic needs, morally obligated to donate the rest of their money to better the lives of people for whom self-sufficiency isn't an option, and that only once all those people have been taken care of can anyone justify spending money on personal luxuries?

Grouping Operating Costs to Clearly See Spending
    2008-01-03 15:45:46
If you have all your operating costs in one large bucket, like administrative costs, break it up into meaningful sections.  Among the departments you may consider are:•    Product or service development or research and development- depending on your business or stage, these could be very large and very critical costs.  It shows you how much you are spending for the future versus operating the present.•    Sales and marketing- keep track of the more fixed costs here, which do not vary automatically with sales.•    Variable selling costs- commissions, credit card fees, incentive plans, royalties, advertising.  These can be split separately when significant.  You see how these change with sales.  Meanwhile, you keep a better focus on more fixed marketing and sales costs.•    Information technology- this has gotten bigger share of spending, first with personal computers (PC’s) and then the Internet.•    Outside services- if you spend a lot of money on attorneys, consultants, accountants and others, split this out.•    Customer service- this might be significant enough to split out.  It could be a sign of how well you are or are not taking care of your customers.•    Personnel costs- you may still want to see your total personnel costs separately.  You could still show the allocation out to different departments.  For example, you could show total fringe costs so you see what you are paying for benefits, then allocate these costs to marketing, IT, etc.•    General administrative- everything else goes in here.  However, if the total is still a big number, consider splitting it out or seeing what should be allocated to other departments. If you already have operating costs split, good for you.  Take a look however and make sure:•    See if any one area, like administrative

NORWAY: European Solar Power Keeps Spending
    2007-12-24 07:47:25
Dutch utility Delta clearly believes that solar energy is far from a flash in the pan: its subsidiary Solland announced on Tuesday a $736.2 million deal with silicon supplier Renewable Energy, which is set to last until 2015.Solland Solar, 90% of which was bought by Delta at the start of this year, is extending an already-existing supply agreement with Oslo-based Renewable Energy. Omnibus Spending Bill, by US Rep. Ron Paul
    2007-12-23 00:00:00
This week Congress finished work on its final spending package for the year. This "Omnibus" bill contains many of the spending bills that did not get passed throughout the year. Last minute changes made by the Senate mean President Bush is likely to sign the legislation into law. What this bill means is lots more of Washington spending your money. And, with a year of talking and fighting about earmarks, we did not see a significant change in that area either. Especially disconcerting is the overseas spending. Let me point to just one example. In that portion of the bill for military construction, there were nearly one billion dollars in earmarks for spending overseas. Again, this is just in the portion for military construction projects. read more

Borrell Associates Predicts a Surge in Local Online Ad Spending
    2007-12-10 11:07:00
After a decade of testing the Web, local advertisers are making signicant adjustments to their marketing dials, turning up the volume on online advertising.Borrell Associates expects a 48 percent increase in local online ad spending in 2008, bringing it to $12.6 billion. Driving most of the growth is the popularity of local search and online video advertising. Local search advertising will more than double next year, to $5 billion, while locally placed online video will triple, to almost $1.3 billion. A major component of local video advertising will be long-form pieces for home, automotive and health-related categories.Next year will be a perplexing one for local media companies trying to tackle the Web. Most yellow pages publishers, cable companies, newspapers, radio stations and TV stations are still pinning their hopes on their traditional sales reps being able sell online ad packages.
