"It feels coming back to home"; she was feeling her homecoming as she has also been attracted to be in the presence of the teacher. It was such a blessing to see him again, to be near him.. meeting pure hearts .When i first saw the people from Shadhiliyya group at Del Mar, San Diego i was amazed and touched by the sheer purity of the hearts. Almost all of them are born americans and their sincere quest for truth led them to the path which is truly amazing to observe. The reason i particularly make note of born american is because its not easy to transcend the barriers, stereotypes, social and set religious-cultural barriers. This alone speak a lot about their level of sincerity as a seeker which touch me always. Shadhiliyya is not a easy going, new age kind of path. It is very much rooted to islamic tradition and sharia (islamic sacred laws) which makes coming and being in the path more special and challenging for people who are from different faith and cultural background. Their sincere diligence when it comes to learning arabic, saying prayer on appointed times, doing zikr and salawat are something which would even make our beloved Prophet so joyous. | | Personal Spiritual Growth - for Adults | | 2007-09-28 18:51:29 | | Our lives are busy and complicated. And they never seem to slow down. Which makes it difficult for anyone to work on their spiritual growth. So I thought I would offer some tips that I've read or learned about over the years and perhaps they can help. These are focused on building your relationship with God and your personal holiness.
Ask. Perhaps the easiest step is also a very effective one. Jesus wants us to grow in holiness and come closer to Him. And Jesus can give us the grace and desire to achieve this. So start by going to Him in prayer and asking for His help. By the way, if you aren't praying daily, you aren't likely to grow closer to Him!
Make time for God. The first tip seems obvious, but it's difficult in practice: on a consistent, daily basis make time for God. This means schedule spiritual reading (either the Bible or another religious book) every day at a set time. By making it a part of your schedule, you can develop this as a habit. And just by reading you can help grow your understanding, love, and relationship with Jesus Christ.
Depend on the Sacraments. The Sacraments are our built-in path to holiness. They are the path God gives us to Himself. So by frequenting the Sacraments - particularly confession and the Eucharist - we can move our minds and conform our wills more fully to God's. This is the easiest way to Jesus!
Ask Mary for Help. The Blessed Virgin Mary is human like us, but she's also perfectly pure and holy. I recommend praying a Hail Mary every morning and asking for her intercession in your day. She is especially helpful in confronting consistent sins that we tend to accumulate over the years and commit on a regular basis.
Add Reminders to your Home and Office. If possible, put Catholic statues, pictures, or icons in your home and office. Add an inexpensive Rosary around the rearview mirror in your car. Get a Catholic CD to listen to as you drive. These little reminders during the day help strengthen your will and bring your mind back around to God repeatedly. Keeping God in the front of your mind will go along way to developing a closer relationship with Him.
Spend time in Eucharistic Adoration. It's difficult to understand the impact of spending time in front of the Blessed Sacrament until you do it. But I think this is a great way to jump start spiritual growth in your life. At times I've done this during lunch or before work or even on weekends. Any time works - Jesus sits waiting quietly for us to come and ask for His help.
Just a few thoughts on how to grow spiritually. I also recommend taking a few moments every night to think about your sins that day and ask God to forgive you and help you not to commit those in the future. Hope this helps you further your relationship with Jesus!

I believe that treatment centers as well as twelve step groups can help addicts. My problem with treatment centers is the cost and the medical model they use which means someone has to be "sick". I believe in the self-discovery model which is the reason I wrote the Changemaker Test. Anyone with compassion can take the Changemaker Test and get a group together and begin learning about themselves. Of course, I also believe that the AA method of tearing someone down in order to rebuild them loses too many new addicts. It works for the military because the recruits have to stay or go to jail for desertion. Having been sober since 1976 and having been a substance abuse counselor who worked in profit and non-profit centers gives me a unique viewpoint. Someone with an experience is never at the mercy of someone with an argument. How do you know that someone--regardless of age--is spiritual? Certainly not because they say they are. The best evaluation is to see the fruits of the Spirit manifested by them. The fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, kindness, self-control, patience, faithfulness, goodness, longsuffering and gentleness as listed in Galatians 5:22-23. When You Find the Buddha in the Middle of the Road--Kill Him is the wise title of a good book by Sidney Kopp. No one knows what is better for anyone but that person. We each have our own answers. Even those trained in counseling techniques can only see what is revealed. Tendencies may be seen and certainly personality indicators will be there. But the work of change is a person's individual choice. The opposite of love isn't hate. The opposite is indifference. When you no longer have feelings for someone, you have no reaction to them. When you feel hate, there is still emotion for that person there. This is the reason abusers can hold on to the abused. Anger may be covering hurt or feelings of entitlement. Generally, unless the abuser has a spiritual experience, the abused must move either emotionally and/or physically away from the abuser. No real reform comes except from a contrite heart.
