| | Spirituality Vs Religion: Different Beliefs? | | 2008-07-25 21:51:33 | | By Catherine ZeebIn Vail Daily We hear and read the term “spirituality” or “spiritual” everywhere these days. What does this truly mean? Are those who call themselves “spiritual,” religious, and vice versa?Wikipedia defines spirituality as “concerns with matters of the spirit, a concept tied to religious belief and faith, a transcendent reality. Spiritual matters are thus those matters regarding humankind’s ultimate nature and purpose, not only as material biological organisms, but as beings with unique relationship to that which is perceived to be beyond both time and the material world.”Religion is defined as “a set of beliefs and practices, often centered upon specific supernatural and moral claims about reality, the cosmos, and human nature, and often codified as prayer, ritual, or religious law. Religion also encompasses ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and religious experience. The term ‘religion... | | By: Spiritual Village | | |
| | Sadhana: The Means of Spirituality and Ahimsa | | 2008-07-18 20:19:28 | | By Dr. Ravindra KumarIn Media For FreedomIt is well evident from many references in Vedas, and especially the Rig-Veda that man has always desired to escape suffering, sorrow and any kind of injury which are the consequence of himsa [violence] through prayers. In spite of difficulty of assessing the condition to that prevailed in Vedic era, when Vedas were composed, it can also be well presumed from these references that right from ancient times for comfort and support people looked to Supreme Power, God; for, they were inclined to spirituality.Spirituality and Ahimsa [non-violence] are in fact one and the same in the sense that both can be attained through Sadhana. That is why; savants of Vedic era concentrated more on prayer which is the simplest form of Sadhana for commonmen and composed the panes of glory to propitiate gods and ancestors calling upon them to bless and protect mankind from all those things that implied violence than preaching non-violence which can only be attained ... | | By: Spiritual Village | | |

| Fantasy Spirituality | talk by Mir Hadian | | 2008-07-14 12:17:36 | | "Many of us have a fantasy perception of spirituality rather than a real awareness of it. Sometimes this happens because a person wants to escape from the demands of the worldly life, or they may be totally unsatisfied with the life that they have. There are many reasons for our misunderstanding spirituality. Nevertheless the search for true spirituality is hidden within everyone.... When you are conceived in the womb you are separated from your origin - the Beloved - and when you try to ‘find yourself’ you’re really seeking that original relationship or Union with the Beloved. The child’s attachment to the mother is part of that seeking and comes from the desire for the existence and attachment that we had before birth.""Self-realisation cannot be given to you - you have to work for it. Why? Because that is your own private experience with the Beloved.""A lot of spiritual fantasy stems from learning from many religions and preaching to others how they should live, how they sho... | | By: Inspirations and Creative Thoughts | | |

Selection of 'Eustress' over 'Dystress' is known as stress management. We should take care of ourselves. We should be energetic. | | Spirituality Vs Religion | | 2008-06-26 07:43:49 | | By Robert W. ChellIn The Lutheran There is a Difference! A flurry of e-mails and much posturing and positioning occurred as the faculty of the university I serve debated the merits of including spirituality in its Wellness 100 course. Some advocated inclusion of spirituality as integral to a healthy lifestyle. Others believed its inclusion crossed the line of separation between church and state—and was only the latest veiled attempt to sneak religion into the curriculum, a wolf in sheep’s clothing. They needn’t have worried. Spirituality isn’t a wolf in sheep’s clothing—but a sheep in wolves’ clothing.Spirituality is private. Religion is public. Spirituality focuses on feelings. Religious faith demands action. The largest difference: We define our own spirituality; religion defines us. Both words come from Latin roots. Spirituality comes from a root word meaning to breathe, a subjective sense defining what empowers oneself. Religion derives from the root word meaning to bi... | | By: Spiritual Village

| | Spirituality: Front Seat or Balcony | | 2008-06-10 09:28:42 | | By Sally SaulitisIn Hesperia Star Life has been likened to a theater, and the older I get the more I find myself in agreement with that analogy. I also agree that life is NOT a dress rehearsal and not everyone is healthy enough to have a front row seat in our lives. There are some people in our life that need to be loved from a distance. I believe the following story illustrates a good lesson in more ways than one. There was a blind girl who hated herself because she was blind. She hated everyone except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her. She told her boyfriend, "If I could only see the world, I would marry you."One day, this girl became the recipient of a pair of donated eyes. After surgery, when the bandages came off, she was able to see everything, including her boyfriend. He asked her, "Now that you can see the world, will you marry me?"The girl looked at her boyfriend and saw that he was blind. The sight of his closed eyelids shocked her. She hadn't expected that. | | Spirituality: Beyond Body, Mind & Emotion | | 2008-06-10 09:19:30 | | By SadhguruIn Times Of India You can think about God, liberation , spirituality, but the thought itself can never be spiritual; it is a psychological process. Mind, body and emotion are different dimensions of life. There is nothing right or wrong about them. It all depends on how you use them — but they cannot be spiritual.Spirituality does not belong to the physical realm. It is a dimension beyond the integrated mechanism of body, mind, emotion and physical energy. A human being is just the play of the five elements: water, earth, air, fire and space. But this play is so beautifully constructed that it is complete by itself. Though this and the rest of existence are of the same material, because of its integrity, it looks absolutely individual right now.Creation is so perfect within itself, you could forget the Creator, and still it would go on. Creation does not need to draw from anything. The problem is, once you realise the perfection of what this is, you will forget God and wi... | | By: Spiritual Village | | |
| | [Video] Go beyond Positive & Negative, Duality Illusion Spirituality | | 2008-05-23 21:37:38 | | Positive and Negative are a part of the dual world. However, truth, soul, God, and spiritual masters are beyond the realms of duality. This is the highest state of consciousness. Self-Realization and Enlightenment go beyond positive and negative. What happens when one goes beyond positive and negative?Going beyond positive and negative is not an easy thing to do. This can only happen when a soul (a person) is in constant meditative state, where nothing affects him. In everything he does he is in meditation. This soul has crossed the positive and the negative that are the two sides of the same coin.Krishna had two wives. The two wives wanted to visit an enlightened master. There was a river in their path so they asked Krishna if he could do something so they could cross the river. He told them to take food to the master and when they neared the bank of the river to ask, "If this master never ate in his life give us a path." So they went and did as they were told. The river parted and the... | | By: Spiritual Village | | |

Spirituality In The Organization, Community and ChurchBY Michael J. Murschel For The Courier News In the aftermath of Sept. 11, the cry went out across the nation for an increased sense of spirituality on a host of levels, including the workplace. This call to return to a more meaningful relationship with one's vocation has continued since then, fueled in part by the views of a Web article at www.workplacespirituality.info:"Today's employees are undergoing some unparalleled changes, such as outsourcing and restructuring. These work and cultural pressures have sparked a demand for a more meaningful work existence. This revelation may cause managers to take notice as workers start leaving in hoping of something more."For the most part, we live in a post-literate and post-religious society. | | Assessing Spirituality Behind Bars | | 2008-05-10 21:09:19 | | A documentary about a meditation program among convicted murderers sparks discussion about the benefits religion and spirituality offer inmates and officials.By Lewis BealeThe warden was skeptical, the prison chaplain downright hostile and at least one inmate volunteer said the experience was tougher than spending eight years on death row. Yet according to The Dhamma Brothers, a documentary currently being released around the country, the intense, 10-day Vipassana meditation program undertaken by nearly two dozen prisoners at Alabama's Donaldson Correctional Facility — a maximum-security prison — was a rousing success."Meditation is a form of treatment that works well in prisons," said Jenny Phillips, the film's co-director and producer. "It's not a relaxation technique; it's not a religion; it's a way to develop skills in managing emotions, and this is what prisoners crave. In a prison like Donaldson, people are so miserable and unhappy — they are looking for redemption and mean... | | By: Spiritual Village
| | DVD - Women & Spirituality: The Goddess Trilogy | | 2008-05-09 05:06:29 | | I didn't watch this movie nor did I see this DVD on sale over at this part of Asia yet. Since one of my pure intentions is to spread love and spiritual awareness, I am simply recommending this movie to our Spiritual Villagers who may have the opportunity to watch it or to entrepreneurs who wish to distribute this movie in Asia or other parts of the world.Described by the Los Angeles Times as "...a massive and beautiful film...," Donna Read's classic trilogy WOMEN AND SPIRITUALITY explores the power of the sacred feminine in mythological, historical and cultural contexts. This stirring series examines goddess-based pre-historic societies, the witch-hunts of the Middle Ages and the continuing popularity of contemporary women's spirituality movements. | | Spirituality & Sex | | 2008-05-05 12:21:03 | | Spiritual Sex: 10 Erotic CommandmentsDiscover the sacred unity of body and soul when it comes to sex. by Thomas Moore People blame philosopher René Descartes for the modern idea that spirit and body are two separate and antagonistic entities. I don’t. I think making this division is an age-old trap. It takes work to see clearly that you need your physical senses to be a spiritual person, and that you need a spiritual acceptance of life’s goodness to be profoundly sensual and sexual. When you finally get body and spirit together—Renaissance writers said you need to be a person of soul to do this—you will discover greater joy in lovemaking. It makes sense: If you are a whole person made up of body, soul, and spirit, when you make love with only your body, you’re getting only one third of the sex. Spirit and soul like sex, too, and they add immensely to the pleasure. It disturbs me to meet so many people for whom sex and spirituality are completely unrelated—or exist as opposite... | | By: Spiritual Village | | |

See the first-part here which I posted last week.Spirituality of the individual and ways to work with itApril 27, 2008 By y Michael J. Murschel For The Courier News Spirituality is not dependent on what one's outlook on God or higher consciousness is. Everyone and every organization has a spiritual component. It could be God, working with a sustainable environment, the pursuit of knowledge, or the law and the profits.Doesn't matter. In one of its online modules, The Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota describes spirituality as "embracing, celebrating, and voicing all the connections with the ultimate/mystery/divine, within me and beyond me, in experiences that give me meaning, purpose, direction, and values for my daily journey. Spirituality exists in our connection to other humans, our environment and the unfolding universe beyond, and the transcendent."That's significant because of the close... | | By: Spiritual Village

For those who chose to take this path or for those who are curious as to why their friends are taking this path, read on. This is Part I in a three-part series and I will post it as it comes out.Shedding some light on spirituality in practiceApril 20, 2008By Michael J. Murschel For The Courier NewsEditor's note: This is the first of a three-part series on spirituality. We start by describing what spirituality is and, more importantly, what it is not. Next will be what spirituality means in the lives of individuals. Third, we explore the role of organizations in fulfilling spirituality for their members.Today, it's a buzz word. But it has been a practice for millennia. It spans cultures and continents, peoples and politics, the sacred and profane. While it pervades everything and everyone talks about it, no one person, group, religion, cult or sector understands it the same way.It is spirituality -- a primary building block of theolog... | | By: Spiritual Village
| | | | | | | Buddhism, Spirituality and Globalisation | | 2008-04-08 03:00:07 | | Buddha LeadsBy SANITSUDA EKACHAI at BangkokPost.com [7th April 2008]Can the ancient teachings of the Buddha, which date back more than 2,500 years, cure the modern angst of globalisation? Ask Seksan Prasertkul, and the answer from the former Marxist revolutionary is a firm "yes"."The problems arising from globalisation are essentially spiritual," said Seksan, a former leader of the 1973 students' uprising and a one-time guerrilla who once chose violence as a path towards change.Buddha dharma, or Buddhist teachings, as the spiritual medicine for human suffering is therefore needed more than ever in the age of globalisation, he said.In his view, globalisation is not all bad. Its fierce forces of greed and competition may have spurred more intensive individual pursuits of material gains that destroy human connections. The great disparity it creates may have triggered deep resentment among the oppressed who often turn to tribal violence to stave off globalisation threats."But globalisation... | | By: Spiritual Village | | |
| | ISU Researchers Finds Benefits Of Spirituality | | 2008-04-07 09:49:08 | | Researchers at Indiana State University (ISU) present findings on benefits/effects of spiritualityby Aliya Khan at IndianStatesman.com [7th April 2008] David Howard, assistant professor of recreation and sport management, shared the healing methods of yoga and dance for cancer patients during Friday's collaborative session hosted by the Center for the Study of Health, Religion and Spirituality."My own research is both needed and, in my opinion, innovative," Howard said. "The two studies I presented have to do with coping with cancer. For men with prostate cancer, the study involves the use of a tantric yoga intervention in light of erectile dysfunction. For women treated for breast cancer, the study takes place in Philadelphia and incorporates the use of dance and movement workshops. "We knew going in that there was such a relation in adults, so we took multiple measures of spirituality and happiness in children."Past studies have shown that in adults, spiritual feelings and higher levels of religious behavior typically account for about 5% of a person's overall happiness, said a UBC statement. The results of the UBC study came as a surprise: 6.5 to 16.5% of children's happiness ca... | | By: Spiritual Village | | |
| | Everyone Has Spirituality | | 2007-11-15 19:12:04 | | Several times I have realized that concerts of any type are the largest groups of people joined together in a spiritual experience. Most people don’t recognize spiritual feelings. The fruits of the spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, meekness, faithfulness. The fruits are from the Bible in several passages: Romans 5:3-5, I Timothy 6:11, 2 Timothy 3:10, and 2 Peter 1:5-7. We each have a soul that needs to be directed toward goodness and away from negativity and sin in order to find peace and joy during our earthly life. We don’t have to die to find Heaven on earth. U2 with Bono have lyrics that reflect Bono’s deep spiritual concerns and active humanitarian concerns. A group of young people in Great Britian have organized a church around those lyrics. | | | How St. Therese' Family Helped Shape Her Unique Spirituality of "The Little Way" | | 2007-10-07 21:54:11 | | In 1997, Pope John Paul II declared St. Therese of the Child Jesus a doctor of the Church. She is one of only thirty-three people who bear this title. What was it about her that caused him to declare her a doctor of the Church? St. Therese' spirituality of using simple, daily tasks to show her love for God and others is an important message for everybody in every age. These days especially, we are always tempted to "make something of ourselves" and "be somebody", but Therese shows us that these things are not necessary for a holy life that is pleasing to God. All of the common and tedious things we do, whether it's shopping for our family's material needs or scrubbing toilets, we must do it with love.
To me it's always interesting to read about a saint's parents and family life. Often the parents gave saintly examples themselves, and can help us make decisions to make a Catholic environment for our family as well. This is the case for Therese' parents. Her father, Louis Martin, and her mother, Zélie-Marie Guérin, both tried to enter religious life but were not able to, so her mother vowed that if she married, she would give all her children to the Church. Louis and Zelie had nine children, but only five survived to adulthood. The family had its share of sorrows. In addition to the death of the four children, Zelie died when Therese was only four years old. But the family environment did not focus on the sorrow. On the contrary, it was marked by an identity, a sense of direction, and a way of life. Through their attendance of daily mass, their support for each other in their work, and the way they shared their faith with their children, Louis and Zelie's faith commitment had a profound effect on their daughters.
Therese' parents' work commitments outside the family did not distract them from their main goal of raising their children in ways that showed respect for God and a love for each other. Love of God was taught through prayer, self-discipline, and generous love. Love for each other was taught by the parents' commitment to each other and family life. Family life gave way to a good deal of entertainment, story-telling, games and feast day celebrations.
Three good points to take away from Louis' and Zelie's example are:
1) Family life needs to have a concrete way of expressing faith in Christ and His Church
2) The example of parents needs to be consistent and genuine
3) Loving family relationships require affirmation, challenge, correction and a generous spirit.
St. Therese and Venerable Louis and Zelie, pray for us, that we may have holy families.
God bless,
Daniel

This is the reason why eventhough most Thais are Theravada Buddhists, they see nothing wrong with adopting other beliefs and superstitions coming from other sources, such as Hinduism, animism, Confucianism and other forms of Buddhism (such as Mahayana).
Usually unnoticed by non-locals, these signs of devotion and worship are EVERYWHERE: inside houses, at shops' entrances, inside vehicles, on the streets, attached to buildings, worn close to the skin, even dangling UNDER vehicles.
Presently, "JATUKAM fever" is gripping Sukhumvit! Jatukam (full title: "Jatukam Ramathep") amulets, believed to offer protection and guarantee wealth, have been reaching record-breaking prices!

| | Religion without Spirituality | Spirituality without Religion | | 2007-05-20 02:30:00 | | It has become quite fashionable these days to call oneself 'spiritual'. Also there is a growing trend to discard anything religious. But this is nothing but spiritual extremism. Pretending or assuming oneself overly-spiritual has its flipside. Just like any form of extremism, it is dangerous.Religion without spirituality become only dry rituals, completely dogmatic, life-less 'follow this, follow that' and selfish actions. In our current world there is no short of example of what religiosity can become when spirituality is taken out of religion. One can become cold blooded murderer even in the name of religion, in the name of God and justifying unthinkable crime even holding a holy book of religion. What is interesting is that Spirituality without religiousness again becomes selfish, an escape route for something called 'personal enlightenment (!)' which can be extremely ego-centric and disguised selfish pursual. | | Using Spirituality for Change | | 2007-03-19 11:52:31 | | As we shift our feelings and thoughts to positive from negative, we become aware of the power that we feel inside. We are becoming aware of our soul. The soul is bigger that just our mind. It includes our dreams, our feelings as well as our thoughts. I don't think that we can try to attain the awakening of our soul in any other way than by choosing to put ourselves in the presence of the God of our understanding. Many centuries ago, a wonderful monk lived and wrote Practice in the Presence of God. He taught me, centuries later, that all I had to do was practice presenting myself to my God. I didn't have to do anything else but put myself in a place where the God of my understanding could communicate with me. Prayer is when I communicate with my God and meditation is the practice of listening to God. Although I have tried many times to maintain the principles of meditation to my life, I have never been able to do meditation in the recommended ways Instead I set aside time s... | | By: Changemaker: Healing Mind, Body and Soul | | |
