| Opponents Say Yanks Will Never Be the Same Without Yankee Stadium | | 2008-07-16 20:09:00 | | From Sean Quinn:They say Babe Ruth built Yankee Stadium. Years from now, they might say Alex Rodriguez used a chunk of his $275 million and hired someone to build the new Yankee Stadium.Last night’s All-Star game was not just a farewell to Yankee Stadium, it was a farewell to any good left in the Evil Empire.A year from now, teams visiting the Bronx will no longer be playing the storied tradition of the Yankees, they’ll just be playing a team called the Yankees. | NASA Gigapan's Yankee Stadium | | 2008-07-16 14:27:00 | | If you were at the Yankee/Red Sox game on July 4th, go to this SI website and you will probably be able to find yourself in your seat in disturbing detail. If you just want to people watch from the comfort of your computer chair, go here as well.More on the Gigapan camera:The Gigapan camera is a simple robotic platform for capturing very high-resolution (gigapixel and up) panoramic images from a standard digital camera. Sponsored by Google, CMU and the NASA Ames Intelligent Robotics Group, the Global Connection Project has also developed software which places you inside the panorama and lets you explore (which I think is what they did with this Yankee Stadium Gigapan). An earlier version of this imaging technology was developed for the Mars Exploration Rovers; the panoramas created from Mars enabled a simulated experience of being on another planet. The Gigapan project aims to create a similar experience, but for exploration of Earth.Hat tip to River Ave Blue's.

| Yanks Spilt Two Stadium Doubleheader against Mets | | 2008-06-27 13:17:00 | | (GAME 1)In what was an embarrassing game for the Yankees and their fans, the Mets blew away the Yanks 15-6 in the opener. This was the third victory in a row for the Mets against the Yanks this season. The Mets pounded out 15 runs and 14 hits in the game.ON THE MOUND: After pitching well against the Reds, Dan Giese did not have as good of a day yesterday. He lasted just four innings, allowing 6 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks. He did not have any command, and seemed to always be pitching from behind in the count (like most Yankees pitchers on the day). He deserves another start, but may be better suited as a long-reliever.Edwar Ramirez allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in his 1.2 IP. Ross Ohlendorf gave up 6 runs on 5 hits in just 1.1 innings of work. The big blast was a long grand slam off the bat of Carlos Degado into the right field bleachers which made a 7-4 game, an 11-4 game. He was optioned to AAA Scranton after the game. | Make Your Home a Real Euro 2008 Stadium | | 2008-06-24 22:40:45 | | I am so sad to tell you guys that I failed to make bookings for my unplanned trip to Switzerland last week to watch the previous football match between my favorite team Germany and Portugal. But, anyway they got victory and I felt very happy about that.
Although I could not make the trip, I could still make my home a live and real Euro 2008 stadium with a 42 inches flat TV LCD that I have just bought. I have spent a lot of time exploring which type of TV is the best option with affordable price in a rush time. My friend who has used it for two years now advised me to buy a flat TV LCD as it could save space for my room. Further, he also shared with me several tips that help me make a right decision by reading trusted gadget reviews about the products I was interested in.
When I visited the websites that he suggested, I saw a list of top 10 gadgets and surprised that most of them are flat TV LCD products. I read carefully all reviews about the one I was interested in. Many customers | | By: Blogging for Blogs

Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for 17 years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans.Look at these grand men. Which of you wouldn't consider it the highlight of his career to associate with them for even one day?Sure, I'm lucky. Who wouldn't consider it an honor to have known Jacob Ruppert - also the builder of baseball's greatest empire, Ed Barrow - to have spent the next nine years with that wonderful little fellow Miller Huggins - then to have spent the next nine years with that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology - the best manager in baseball t | | By: San Diego Sporting

| Subsidized Soccer Stadium Proposal Deserves a Red Card | | 2008-06-10 23:00:00 | | D.C. officials and soccer team D.C. United are in negotiations regarding a $150 million to $225 million subsidy for a new soccer stadium at Poplar Point. Area economists, organized by the D.C. Fiscal Policy Institute, released a joint statement arguing that the subsidy is a waste of public funds and is unlikely to stimulate much economic activity. While a new stadium may shift some spending from Maryland and Virginia into D.C., the cost of the proposed subsidy is too great to justify the meager increase in spending. A government subsidy is only justifiable when it benefits society as a whole, not one specific industry. Supporters of the stadium subsidy claim that it will create new jobs, but the relationship between job creation and economic growth is not as intuitive as it may seem. Economists Andrew Zimbalist, Roger Noll, and 15 others did a case study on the economic effect of building sports facilities on hosting regions. They found that in every case, the sports faci | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |

| Yankees Bury Bernie Under Stadium For Good Luck | | 2008-04-17 12:17:00 | | From The Onion, hat tip to Peter Abraham:Citing a need for physical and spiritual cleansing after a Boston Red Sox fan entombed a David Ortiz jersey in the floor of the new facility, the New York Yankees buried former centerfielder Bernie Williams under 4,650 pounds of concrete Wednesday in the foundation of the new Yankee Stadium for good luck. According to team sources, the instant the 39-year-old Williams was completely submerged in the rapidly setting structural material, stopping his voice as his lungs and mouth filled with concrete, the sun broke through the clouds and shone on the yet-incomplete field. Yankees part-owner Hank Steinbrenner called the occurrence a sign indicating that the "Curse Of A Red Sox Fan's David Ortiz Jersey" had been reversed, and that God was once again on the Yankees' side.

| Ladies & Gentlemen, Your 2008 Shea Stadium Promotional Games | | 2008-02-27 06:42:00 | | Rickey was elated to see that his 2008 Mets Ticket Pack arrived in the mail while he was in Florida this past weekend. We use the term “his” rather loosely, because the tickets were in fact a Christmas gift for Papa Henderson (but Rickey is giving serious consideration to being a schmuck about it and just keeping ‘em for himself). And Rickey was pleased to notice that several of the games Rickey’s pop will be attending are promotional nights at Shea Stadium! So let’s take a look at some of the exciting promotional games the Mets are running this season, shall we? And here is Ross's first public comments about this: "Having grown up in South Florida, Dolphins football has been a lifetime passion for me. | Miami Marlins Have Their Stadium | | 2008-02-22 07:17:00 | | There are no more votes left to be taken. No more negotiations. No more delays. The Marlins finally have their ballpark ready to break ground at the OB Site in anticipation of the 2011 season.I guess it's win for baseball fans in South Florida, and baseball in general. I'm still not overjoyed at the location, and I have a hatred for the ownership that runs pretty deep. But at least the drama is done and everyone can just move on. Personally, I won't be going to any games at the new site unless some drastic changes are made in the way they run their team. Hopefully, with the "increased revenues" they'll keep their promises to field competitive ballclubs. One thing I wish would stop is when anyone involved with this deal pretends that it is about anything other than money. | Stadium Saga is Over | | 2008-02-16 15:23:00 | | Scratch that, it's about over. The deal is finally set, but still needs a vote.Finally. Not that I'm in support of a Marlins stadium after the constant fire sales, but if they wanted to stay in Miami, this was the only way it was getting done. A downtown site would have been preferable to a Little Havana location, but I suppose baseball fans will take what they can get.I for one refuse to go to a Marlins game at the Orange Bowl site. Too many bad feelings about what to me is desecrating historic lands. You couldn't pay me to go even if they one day return to the World Series. | Celebrating Valentine's Day... Around the city there were several guys walking fast with flower bouquets in their hands, mainly red roses. Clinton Cards, Thorntons, and Ann Summers were swamped with people who were buying last minute's cards, chocolates, and lingeries. But since 3.00 PM they were outnumbered by guys with red scarves. No, the red-scarves men were not celebrating Valentine's Day. They were wearing the Aberdeen FC scarves, and were warming themselves up prior to the kickoff, which would have started in 3 hours. | Combined Soccer/Ice Hockey Stadium Planned In Switzerland | | 2007-12-08 09:01:00 | | Swiss investment bank Credit Suisse has laid out plans for a combined soccer/ice hockey stadium in Zurich that would host the city's three biggest professional sports teams (that would be Grasshoppers, F.C. Zurich and ZSC Lions, for those of you not in the know). I don't think I've ever heard of anything like this before. There are renderings of what the place would look like here. They aren't envisioning a "hybrid" structure but actually two different stadia (along with a shopping center) under the same roof. Neither would be particularly large, but then Switzerland is not a particularly large country; 20,000 capacity for the soccer grounds and half that for the hockey rink. The idea is born out of necessity. Where Switzerland's largest city once had two separate soccer grounds and an ice hockey stadium, they now basically have no structures dedicated to either sport. Grasshoppers longtime stadium, the Hardturm, was torn down earlier this year and F.C. Zurich's has been converted | | By: The Soccer Source | | |

| Qualcomm Stadium: Good for great college bowl games | | 2007-12-05 12:40:00 | | Qualcomm Stadium isn’t good enough for the Chargers. What is it good for?How about two of the best non-BCS football games this college postseason? The Pacific Life Holiday Bowl has a great match-up Dec. 27 with No. 12 Arizona State (10-2) vs. No. 17 Texas (9-3).ASU would have been in a BCS game had Hawaii not made a late comeback to beat Washington last Saturday.Texas was the national champion two years ago and is still considered among the top names in college football. As for the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, the Navy (8-4) vs. Utah (8-4) contest Dec. 20 is as good as it gets before Christmas.Navy is always a great draw in a military town like San Diego, and it has a very formidable team.Utah, three years removed from a BCS game, scored a 44-6 victory this season over a UCLA team which was in the Rose Bowl hunt until last weekend. No matter what you say about Qualcomm Stadium, it’s still adequate enough for two of the top bowl games in America. | | By: San Diego Sporting | | |

| Birmingham Mayor: Let's Raise Taxes to Build a Domed Stadium | | 2007-11-20 00:00:00 | | There are many stories of bad fiscal policy proposals that we often read about and comment here. But there are some stories that just write themselves. From the Associated Press:Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford is getting lots of questions from the Birmingham City Council about his proposed tax hikes and revitalization plans. His proposals include doubling the business license fees and a one percent increase in the sales tax. Langford said the money would help fund a domed stadium, transit system, scholarship programs and police department among other things. Yesterday, the new mayor met with council members to answer questions about his plan. The city council today is expected to set up a series of public hearings before it takes a vote.A taxpayer-funded domed stadium for Birmingham, Alabama? Is Birmingham going to try to lure professional sports teams besides arena football and minor league baseball to an area that has fewer people than Richmond, Virginia? And even if it were successful | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |
