Ranking the Stadiums of the SEC and ACC
    2008-07-24 21:54:23
google.com To help us get ready for the season, I will be doing some rankings from each conference and a best of. Today we start off with the best stadiums in each conference. The SEC has by far and away the best stadiums on anyone in the country and much better than most of the ACC. In ranking the stadiums, I took into account capacity, winning percentage, location, and pregame experience. Here it is...SEC1. LSU Saturday nights at Tiger Stadium are one of the true gems of college football. LSU fans tailgate with the best of them before heading into to watch their team in "Death Valley". The atmosphere is so electric inside Tiger Stadium that a small earthquake was registered on the school's Richter scales after a tying TD pass against Auburn back in 1988. Earthquake Game2. FloridaThe stadium is built for optimum noise containment and Urban Meyer has made it a priority to win at home with just 1 loss in 3 seasons in "The Swamp". Even

Hey Chargers, old stadiums produce champions
    2008-07-02 15:37:00
Did you see the senseless quote from Mark Fabiani of the Chargers in the San Diego Union-Tribune?“There's a world for a team with an old stadium – a world where you're consistently behind. It's a world you see in baseball all the time,” the Chargers’ current (and Bill Clinton’s former) spin doctor said.Well, let’s look at the last six World Series winners, see where they played and figure out who’s really behind:2002: Anaheim Angels (35-year-old stadium)2003: Florida Marlins (16-year-old stadium)2004: Boston Red Sox (92-year-old stadium)2005: Chicago White Sox (14-year-old rebuilt stadium)2006: St. Louis Cardinals (new ballpark)2007: Boston Red Sox (95-year-old stadium)If you look at it, the teams with older stadiums are winning the World Series more times than not.And oh, by the way, the last two Super Bowl winners were the Indianapolis Colts and New York Giants. The Colts played in a 23-year-old stadium; the Giants a 31-year-old stadium. So much for spin doctor Fabiani’

The Time’s architect critic reviews Beijing’s new stadiums
    2008-06-19 04:29:19
The Time’s architect critic Tom Dyckhoff visited Beijing to review the new stadiums. He seemed to say good things about the Birds Nest stadium and the new swimming center but had a lot of criticism for the other stadiums and the Olympic forest. Because the “bird’s nest” might be the ultimate in architectural eye candy, [...]

Jonathan Glancey reviews Beijing new stadiums
    2008-02-11 20:50:48
The Guardian’s architectural critic Jonathan Glancey reviews Beijings new stadiums for the 2008 Olympics. “In dramatic contrast, the main stadium for this year’s Beijing Olympics is, quite simply, stunning. Here is an adventure in steel and concrete, a building - despite its age-old purpose - like no other.” And on the new aquatic center he writes: “In [...]

    Thai Boxing stadiums (Koh Samui)
    2007-12-25 18:52:00
Thai Boxing stadiumsThe Lamai Stadium is located in South Lamai, between Ring Road and Lamai Beach Road. Another ring is found in a bar area in the middle of the Beach Road. One of the first foreign operated MUAYTHAI Gyms in Thailand, The Lamai Gym in Koh Samui has come a long way from when it first opened its doors to young and eager Muaythai enthusiasts back in 1989. Before the inter-net or fax machines being commonplace office items, the only way you could have heard of it was by word-of-mouth.People may still remember the outdoor weights area and the old slip ’n slide boxing ring where there were often up to a dozen guys training at once, turning the whole training area into a swimming pool of sweat and aggression, and those who weren’t lucky enough to fit into the ring were placed out the back of the gym in the dirt, or how early every morning when most every one on the island was sleeping, a bunch of Thais and foreigners would be working up a sweat with morning training and by the afternoon the Gym was simply exploding with action. Now as everyone involved in Muaythai knows as they knew then, this is what every other Thai gym was like, so what made it so special... Well, the major difference can be found in the details: The location of course is definitely unique – Koh Samui, way out on the ocean isle, there exists a very different energy in the air, the people, and most importantly for those into Muay, the energy of the camp - People stayed in Bungalows near the Gym and the old Flamingo Lamai Stadium, where once a week, open air fights were held and, in those days, especially for the foreign visitors to the camp and the occasional tourist, it was like being at the circus, as people from all over the island would show up for the show, having come to see the ring sport rally. Fifteen years down the road and how things have changed. Even though the gym has moved from its original location it hasn’t lost any of its allure and only increased in it’s char

Sen. Obama Wrong About Economics of Sports Stadiums
    2007-08-08 07:00:00
Last night in the Democratic debate sponsored by the AFL-CIO and held at Soldier Field in Chicago, candidate Barack Obama was asked about his support of taxpayer money being used to build the stadium that houses the NFL's Chicago Bears. Here is Obama's response:Absolutely, it was the right call because it put a whole bunch of Illinois folks to work, strong labor jobs were created in this stadium, and at the same time, we created an enormous opportunity for economic growth throughout the city of Chicago. And that's good for the state of Illinois.Sen. Obama is suffering from the famous broken window fallacy. Sports stadiums are rarely, if ever, the economic engines the politicians claim. While some people did work to build the stadium as Obama said, he fails to mention that had the taxpayer money been spent on another use, other jobs would have been created from that money, likely leading to even bigger economic growth in the state. This is the classic case of what French economist Fr
