| Fighting Foreclosure on Staten Island | | 2008-06-22 02:45:00 | | Staten Island is more dependent on private cars and private homes than its urban neighbors. It has a smaller share of the very rich and very poor than the rest of the city. While its homeownership rate is double that of the city as a whole — some 70 percent, versus 35 percent, according to 2006 census figures, the most recent data available — it is roughly the same as that of the nation as a whole.A high level of homeownership used to signal a high level of stability. But Staten Island’s similarity to the broader United States holds true when it comes to the housing crisis as well, and foreclosures are on the rise in the borough.

| | Staten Island Boat Graveyard | | 2008-02-14 20:28:30 | | It seems like many of us are attracted to boats at the sad ends of their lives. Wrecks, abandoned hulls, whatever. Urban exploration has grown more popular, or at least with the Internet its easier to share these intrepid adventurers' travels. This photo collection is a great set of pictures of a bunch of early 20th century boats that are way past their glory days.
Traversing
through the rusted hulks of these ships was a pretty incredible
experience! The weather was great and the water was calm (although a
little stinky, there is a lot of polluted muck in the harbor). I have
seen this place from the shore once before, and it is nothing compared
to being right in there... the ships themselves are in terrible shape
structurally, but I would've liked to climb around a lot more if I had
more time over there!
This was another nice break from the hospitals, and completely
different... I like how these photos came out and enjoyed taking them.

| Staten Island Botanical Garden Canna Lilies | | 2007-09-02 15:27:00 | | Staten Island Botanical Garden Canna LiliesYesterday I decided to visit the Staten Island Botanical Garden. For those that don’t know Staten Island is one of the five boroughs that make up New York City. Here is more info on Staten Island:Click hereI didn’t get to see too much of the Island but what I did see makes me want to go back and explore it some more. It is quite an arduous journey to get there from Connecticut. The first thing I did was hop in the car and drive to Katonah, New York to get the train to Manhattan. After the train brings you to Grand Central Terminal you have to get the Times Square Shuttle, on the Subway, to go downtown. I knew the #1 line is what I wanted to take to the Staten Island Ferry. Once I got on the #1 line I figured I was all set to ride down to the South Ferry station. Oh no, all trains were stopping several stations from South Ferry due to construction with shuttle buses to go the rest of the way. I decided to walk and of course it was a lot lon | | By: Digital Flower Pictures.com | | |
| | The Staten Island Fairy | | 2007-04-08 09:43:00 | | We didn’t believe in the Easter Bunny growing up. Never even considered it. Santa Claus was an impossible myth for my parents to perpetuate with all of our older, wiser friends. But the tooth fairy? She was practically a member of the family. My mother had created an entire background story and personality for our dear fairy. Her name was Maxine and she lived on Staten Island. Since we lived in Connecticut, Maxine took the Staten Island Ferry and then the commuter train to reach our house, explaining why she always arrived so late at night. No wings for our fairy. Those of us lucky enough to loose a tooth would sometimes hear her in the hall outside our bedroom, pleading with my mother to not have to come in. Maxine was shy and didn’t want to bother us poor children. We’d hear her obnoxious New York accent and my mom’s polished English going back and forth until finally my mother would relent and sneak into our rooms to retrieve the tooth for her.I adored Maxine's emotional vi | | By: Hollywood Flakes: Get 'em While They're Hot | | |
