| Life in these United States... | | 2008-07-07 11:47:00 | | A typical summer day at my house involves......using 9 cups per meal, 9 plates per meal, 9 forks per meal, and 9 napkins per meal. That is 27 dishes to wash after each meal for a total of 81 dishes per day. That is also 27 paper napkins per day....washing 4 loads of laundry. This by no means gets it all done but it keeps the piles manageable....putting sunscreen on 7 little bodies. We use, on average, 2 bottles of sunscreen a month....saying "no you cannot" over 100 times. Also saying "yes you can" over 100 times....using one entire loaf of bread for lunch. Also at least 2 pounds of grapes....putting at least one child in time out....lining up 30 pairs of shoes so the entryway isn't cluttered....spending 2 hours a day doing our jobs. Each child has one and does it to help keep the house under control....singing at least 5 songs on our PS2 Singstar or American Idol game....playing 3 games of kickball in the yard....feeding 5 cats and 1 dog. I think they are pickier eaters than the kids. | | By: Organized Chaos | | |

| Which States Tax Celebrations of Independence from Taxation? | | 2008-07-02 23:00:00 | | One of the Tax Foundation's principles of sound tax policy is neutrality, which states that since taxes pay for general public services enjoyed by everyone, they should be levied broadly rather than on a group of people who happen to purchase a particular product or service. The fundamental purpose of taxes is to raise necessary revenue for programs, not to micromanage a complex market economy with subsidies and penalties. High taxes on certain goods only distort economic activity. Put another way, the principle of neutrality says that high tax rates on specific goods or services are simply unfair. The Fourth of July is in part a celebration of independence from unfair taxation, so how ironic would it be for governments to apply unfairly high taxes to items used in Independence Day celebrations? Well, that's exactly what some states do.Cleburne County, Alabama, levies an 8 percent tax on fireworks: The net proceeds of the first two cents ($.02) per one dollar ($1) gross sale | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |

| California joins other states with hands-free cellphone law | | 2008-07-02 16:37:00 | | California joined thirty-two other states today when a new law banning unlimited cellphone use in automobiles went into effect at midnight. The new rules prohibit drivers from holding cellphones to their ears while talking, yet they are still allowed to dial the phone to place the call... and freely text message. While the law won't likely have a huge effect on many adult drivers who have become accustomed to using speaker-phones and hands-free devices such as Bluetooth-enabled earpieces , it is the young drivers who face tough new rules. The law in the Golden State now bans drivers under the age of 18 from using any kind of mobile device while driving. All drivers face the same slap-on-the-wrist if caught. The first offense is only $20, with the fee bumped to $50 for additional convictions. Of course, that number will rapidly increase if other infractions or penalties are applied.[Source: Los Angeles Times, Photo by David McNew/Getty]Tag: Government/Legal, Safety, Car News | | By: Car News | | |

| Which States Would Be Affected Most by Obama's Proposal to Lift the Social Security Tax Cap? | | 2008-06-02 23:00:00 | | New Jersey, Maryland and Connecticut lead the list of states that would bear the brunt of the Social Security tax hike that Sen. Obama has suggested. In a new Tax Foundation Fiscal Fact, economist Gerald Prante ranks the 50 states from least to hardest hit, assuming Sen. Obama's proposal to lift the wage tax ceiling becomes law."More than 10 percent of taxpayers in New Jersey would pay higher payroll taxes if the wage tax ceiling were abolished," says Prante. "It would have a much smaller impact in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota where fewer than three percent of individuals earn more than the current wage tax ceiling."The wage tax ceiling was $94,700 for a single person in 2006, the most recent year for which tax data is available. In 2008, the ceiling is $102,000, so the maximum Social Security tax for a single person is 12.4 percent of the first $102,000 in wages, or $12,648.In response to Obama's editorial in the Quad City Times last September suggesting t | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |

| Municipal Bond Exclusions Help Shield High-Tax States From Tax Competition | | 2008-05-26 23:00:00 | | A reader wrote in after reading this post on the Kentucky v. Davis outcome, asking for more information about why states' practice of excluding municipal bond interest income is problematic. There are many reasons, of course, one of which is that the exclusion helps shield high-tax states from interstate competition that could bring down tax burdens. Our brief points to previous Tax Foundation research on the topic:To understand why high-tax states benefit from the exclusion, first assume that the exclusion did not exist. If a $1,000 state or local government bond had to pay a 10 percent return annually, or $100, to attract enough bond buyers, every investor would benefit equally. See generally Patrick Fleenor, "Tax-Exempt State and Local Bonds: A $20 Billion Gift to the Nation's Wealthiest Investors," in Fixing the Alternative Minimum Tax: AMT Reform Requires Changes to Regular Tax Code, Tax Foundation Special Report No. 155 (May 2007), at 9.However, because of the exclu | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |

| Special Interests, Housing, and the Current Tax Debate in the United States Senate | | 2008-04-04 23:00:00 | | Steve Pearlstein of the Washington Post had a rather amusing yet at the same time somewhat scary look at the current debacle that is taking place in the U.S. Senate with regards to housing and the tax code. | United States Free Trade | | 2008-04-01 16:49:00 | | Not well understood by most of the populace, unregulated free trade hurts more people than it helps and not only in the United States but throughout the world. But, at least, the American people understand it better than the elitists.Sixty-five percent of Washington journalists believed that NAFTA's impact has been positive for the United States and only 8 percent thought it has had a negative impact. Yet only 32 percent of the public believed NAFTA's impact has been positive, while 42 percent thought its impact has been negative. In the late 1990s, the Washington media supported Fast Track, 71-10 percent. The public opposed it, 35-56 percent. How out of touch are the elitists with the American public? The answer is very much out of touch. In any event, they believe the ideological conditioning they have submitted the American public to is powerful enough to keep the public marching towards destinations in their not your or the nation's best interests. | More on States Exporting Tax Burden to Out-of-State Businesses | | 2008-03-24 23:00:00 | | An excellent article appeared yesterday in the Asbury Park Press on the dangers of "economic nexus" - the practice of states imposing taxes on businesses that have no employees or property within the state. An excerpt from "Revenuers get aggressive" by Jason Method: In 2001, using the same nexus theory, Los Angeles County, Calif., unsuccessfully attempted to force the company that owns DirecTV to pay property taxes on its satellites in orbit. But some out-of-state business owners say New Jersey has become so aggressive that the tax bills have crossed over to the absurd.Closer to home, New Jersey in 2003 sent a $15,000 corporate tax bill to a software developer in South Carolina, six years after the developer sold a $695 computer program to an Atlantic City casino.Carey J. "Bo" Horne, 60, of Seneca, S.C., said he was stunned when he got the tax bill from New Jersey. | New Tax Foundation Study Shows Half of U.S. States Tax Businesses More Heavily than Any Other Nation Does | | 2008-03-18 00:00:00 | | A new Tax Foundation Fiscal Fact shows that half of U.S. states tax job providers at a higher rate than any other country in the developed world. Counting the federal rate alone, the U.S. has the world's highest corporate tax rate, but including average sub-national rates (federal plus state in the U.S.), Japan edges out the U.S. for the highest-tax location. This study breaks the tax down by state, adding each state's corporate tax rate to the federal corporate tax rate. The results show that 25 states impose, when combined with the federal rate, a higher business tax rate than in any other nation. In fact:25 states have a combined corporate tax rate higher than top-ranked Japan.35 states have a combined corporate tax rate higher than third-ranked Germany.46 states have a combined corporate tax rate higher than fourth-ranked Canada. All 50 states have a combined corporate tax rate higher than fifth-ranked France.According to Tax Foundation president Scott Hodge, the study's author:This | | By: Tax Policy Blog | | |

| Winning the Big States | | 2008-03-16 19:23:56 | |
Since it looks like Hillary will be unable to win the most pledged delegates, the ones the voters actually select, she is looking for other ways to secure the nomination. The only way possible will be by convincing the superdelegates to override the will of the people. One of Hillary's arguments is that she is winning the big states. I find this argument weak in that what happens in the Primary doesn't necessarily mean it will happen in the General Election. Trying to win your party's nomination and trying to get elected President are two completely different things. Besides, even if Hillary wins the big states like New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California, it doesn't mean diddlysquat. Both Al Gore and John Kerry won those states, but neither was elected President. Al Gore even won the popular vote, another case Hillary is hoping to make. Winning the big states are nice, but winning enough states to get the required number of delegates is more important. | | By: Miscellaneous Reflexions | | |

| UNITED STATES: As energy costs continue to soar, industry feeling heat in Congress | | 2008-03-16 05:54:19 | | It sounds like an oil executive's vision of Nirvana: $4-a-gallon gasoline this summer and $100-a-barrel oil for the foreseeable future.
But mix in a groundswell of consumer outrage and vote-hungry presidential and congressional candidates in tight races in November, and that good dream turns bad...

| US states consider lowering legal drinking age: Life, liberty and a legal buzz before you're 21 | | 2008-03-03 21:01:31 | | When I was 17I had some very good beerI had some very good beerThat I purchasedWith a fake IDMy name was Brian McGeeI stayed up listening to QueenWhen I was 17 “When I Was 17”, Homer J. Simpson A powerful youth movement is afoot in the USA. Young Americans are fed up with the status quo and are demanding change. Countless youngsters are shaking off apathy, signing petitions, launching online campaigns and joining forces to exercise their collective power to ensure that their voices are heard in the halls of power. Obamamania? What would a couple of beery Canadians who only watch CNN when hangovers preclude a remote control hunt know about that? (Editor’s Note: When are the people who invented The Clapper going to come up with a TV remote equivalent [one clap to turn it on, successive claps for channel flipping]? Would-be inventers have our blessings to run with this). No, what we’re referring to is the snowballing movement south of the border to lower the drinking age | | By: The Shark Guys | | |

| Report states that Americans drive older cars | | 2008-02-25 16:51:41 | | It seems normal to state that the newer a model is, the greener it is. Newer cars get better mileage (well, not always), improved safety features, and they have new emissions technology with makes them cleaner. According to a recent report by R. L. Polk & Co, the median age for passenger cars is 9.2 years in the US for second year in a row. It was 8.3 years in 1998. These figures have increased steadily since then. So Americans are driving older cars. If we look at what happens at the end of a car's life, 5.5 percent of cars were scrapped in 2007, compared to 9.5 percent in 1970 - so Americans are scrapping less as well. The could be several reasons for this. Americans might not want to change their cars more often for economic reasons, because their vehicles are more reliable and have increased longevity or simply because cars don't change all that much in each model year. In addition, the question of whether if it's financially worth it to upgrade to a greener car -- regardless of | | By: Auto News: Car Reviews, Car News, Car Shows | | |

| Hugo Chavez Threatens to Cutoff Oil to the United States | | 2008-02-12 00:21:27 | | I find it hilarious how socialists who institutionalize misery around the world love to create scapegoats. Hugo Chavez is one of these leaders. He has directly created an economic situation where his Country is already running out of milk and eggs; it was so predictable as soon as he announced his plans to impose a command economy early last year.
Now, Exxon Corporation has decided that it is...
