| | Is There A Statistical Way to Rank College Coaches? | | 2008-06-23 20:08:46 | | I was approached recently by a fellow blogger about a coaching ranking system using recruiting, player development, game day coaching, and program control as the criteria. Each category was assigned a different weight with recruiting given the most and program control the least. I find it very hard to rate coaches who have less than 2 years experience at a head job in the conference, but I went on past experience if I had to. 1. Recruiting (weight = x2) The life blood of any program. Putting the best team on the field is the best way to give your team the chance to win. If the cupboards are always stocked with Parade All-Americans, it won’t be long before all the right breaks come your way and you’re knockin on the door. This is purely a subjective ranking, if you wanna take into account the fact that it’s harder to recruit at Vandy and Wake than it is as USC and FSU, that’s your prerogative. There is no wrong answer. 2. Player Development (weight = x1½) ... | | By: ACC SEC Blog | | |

| | Revisiting “Josh Hamilton Vs. Mark Teixeira: A Statistical Study” | | 2008-06-15 15:46:05 | | Back on March 17th, I scrupulously examined a Tim Cowlishaw-inspired question that was, without a doubt, one of the more fascinating subjects I’ve ever explored in this space:
Just how many of the runs lost as a direct result of [Mark] Teixeira’s departure can be regained through the acquisition of [Josh] Hamilton?
A “quick and dirty” [...]... | | By: Baseball Time in Arlington
| | Statistical Analysis of Decapitation as a Counter-Terror Strategy | | 2008-05-30 14:10:22 | | The most recent edition of The Journal of International Policy Solutions published a statistical analysis I wrote on the efficacy of killing or capturing the top leaders of a terrorist organizations. Entitled "Testing The Snake Head Strategy: Does Killing or Capturing its Leaders Reduce a Terrorist Group's Activity?" the article can be read in its entirety here a summary of the method and findings follows. It is conventional wisdom that removing an organization's leaders is an effective counter-terror...(read more)... | | By: An American Warning | | |

| | Where I Lay My Head (and my bones...) Is Home: Some statistical facts about dual citizenship in Luxembourg | | 2008-04-14 14:00:37 | | (see the original charts in http://www.statistiques.public.lu/)The red line at the bottom of the chart represents the number of foreigners that actually died in Luxembourg from 2001 to 2006 (arithmetic mean: 613 per year). Compare it with the blue line at the the top(arithmetic mean: 3133). Luxembourgers/foreigners death percentages: 83,6 / 16,4 %. Luxembourgers/foreigners total population percentages: 61,2 / 38,8 % (arithmetic means per year, again). Now think that some (most? half?) of this foreigners didn't choose to die in Luxembourg (road or work accident, sudden death, whatever...).Surprised? I'm not.And I'm also not too keen on the traditional idea of patriotism. In fact, I think most of it is a bunch of nonsense, and "national" traditions just a model for those who are too lazy or too stupid to think for themselves. But I do believe in citizenship, in responsibility, in rights and duties. The kind of citizenship built in Europe after the French Revolution (but not in France, it... | | By: :u:b:i:k:u:o: | | |
| | Statistical Values for Foreign Trade Processes in SAP MM | | 2008-04-07 14:49:54 | | Use Every item a country imports or exports must have a statistical value associated with it when it passes through customs. The statistical value is the net domestic value (fair market value) of a product when it crosses a border. (The fair market value is the price the product is normally sold at in the manufacturer's domestic market.) This value is needed for each exported or imported item for INTRASTAT and EXTRASTAT declarations in the European Community (EC). It is used as a basis for keeping track of foreign trade statistics. The statistical value is printed on the appropriate customs documents such as the Single Administrative Document (SAD) in the EC, the Shipper's Export Declaration (SED) in the US, and the export report in Japan. The statistical value is a measure of the actual value of the goods imported or exported and does not include the value added tax (VAT) or all of the transportation and insurance costs. You are exporting goods to a customer in another EU ... | | By: Free SAP FICO,MM,SD,BW Material And Faq's | | |

| | Statistical Awareness | | 2008-03-28 10:57:16 | | A recent Hockey News article laments the rise of statistics in hockey. I don't know how Draft Dodger or Joe feel about this subject, but I for one enjoy actual, informative statistical analysis. To be fair, the ludicrous examples given in the article aren't the kind I'm talking about. Tweaks to how +/- is considered, the number of blocked shots in penalty killing situations, face-off percentages in different zones and different situations, penalty +/-, etc. are all informative, valid stats, in my opinion. If nothing else, they serve to stimulate conversation and argument on the intrawebs, which is the real reason most of us are here anyway. Some of my favorite stats sites this season (besides the gregarious DD's work on this lovely corner of cyber-space) have been: The Fo... | | By: Mile High Hockey | | |
| | Josh Hamilton Vs. Mark Teixeira: A Statistical Study | | 2008-03-18 01:18:33 | | Tim Cowlishaw’s latest piece, found in the Monday edition of the Dallas Morning News, discusses the impact of Mark Teixeira’s now-glaring absence from the Rangers lineup, and how the club hopes to fill the gaping void left by Teixeira following his departure from the organization last July.
Of particular note is this paragraph pertaining to center [...]... | | By: Baseball Time in Arlington

Six Sigma is about numbers. Six Sigma produces a flood of data about your process that are critical to your success. If you don’t measure it and understand what you are measuring, you can’t manage it. Six Sigma’s clear strength is a data-driven analysis and decision-making process not someone’s opinion or gut [...]... | | By: learn about lean & six-sigma

| | Applied Data Mining: Statistical Methods for Business and Industry | | 2007-10-07 13:40:00 | | Author: Paolo GiudiciPaperback: 376 pagesPublisher: Wiley (October 2003) Language: EnglishISBN: 0470846798(R)Data mining can be defined as the process of selection, exploration and modelling of large databases, in order to discover models and patterns. The increasing availability of data in the current information society has led to the need for valid tools for its modelling and analysis. Data mining and applied statistical methods are the appropriate tools to extract such knowledge from data. Applications occur in many different fields, including statistics, computer science, machine learning, economics, marketing and finance. This book is the first to describe applied data mining methods in a consistent statistical framework, and then show how they can be applied in practice. All the methods described are either computational, or of a statistical modelling nature. Complex probabilistic models and mathematical tools are not used, so the book is accessibl... | | By: GanEden For Books | | |

The central theme is that, given the Hamiltonian for a system, it is possible to calculate the thermodynamics correlation function, either numerically or through the use of infinite series. The book is self-contained, with all required mathematics included either in the text or in Appendixes. The text includes many exercises designed for self-study. Zip Password: T0sT@rN@
