    Dominykisms on Steroids
    2008-05-18 21:34:23
We just returned from the soccer game. Surprisingly, six kids decided to go with me and we met Bart and two others at the game. That means that 8 of the 9 kids were all together with us in the same place and one of them included Salinda! She was actually appropriate and almost nice most of the day. I’m still in shock.Dominyk and I took two walks tonight, one before supper and one after supper. During the walk and at other times tonight he was so himself. He had found a pocket knife that he had lost and so he was obsessed with using it on everything. He carved sticks, and bars of soap, and crayons, and dandelions, and a tennis ball ... and when he started to slice open the pop can I had to put an end to it. Here are some snippets of conversation from tonight involving the knife and other things. As we started the walk, he grabbed a dandelion and cut it off at the base with the knife. I had recently heard some story about dandelions and was frantically searching for the details...

    Steroids in modern sport
    2008-03-03 13:08:00
With the release of former Senator George Mitchell’s report on the issue of performance enhancing drugs in baseball it is time for a new perspective on the topic. Major League Baseball (MLB) went from virtually no steroid policy in 2003 when Steve Belcher was found dead during spring training (Pound, 2006), to todays finger pointing and firm denials. Players like Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens are publicly reprimanded for using substances such as Tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) or Human Growth Hormone (HGH), (Fainaru-Wada, 2006) But why are these substances illegal in baseball and those who use them treated as harshly as convicted felons? Shoemaker lists three standard arguments why sports should be cleansed of all steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. First, that these drugs are unnatural ways to achieve performances that should be unobtainable. Secondly, performance-enhancing drugs give those who use them an unfair advantage over those who are clean. Al...

A Clemens Post With No Mention of Steroids
    2008-02-21 11:41:00
My friend Adam sent me an email the other day about the alleged "the greatest pitcher of the modern era" Roger Clemens, and his postseason numbers with the Red Sox. As most of you Red Sox fans know, he had a very mediocre record for the Sox in his postseason appearances of 1986, 1988, 1990 and 1995. His record was 1-2, with an ERA of 3.88. He had only one shining moment in the postseason for the Red Sox: winning Game 7 of the 1986 ALCS to get the Red Sox into the World Series. But he also got hit hard in that World Series in Game 2, but the Sox hit Dwight Gooden harder and won. He pitched decently in Game 6, but he famously asked out after 7 innings (or did he?), as the Mets tied the game in the eighth, and...you know the rest. His most infamous postseason Sox moment was Game 4 of the 1990 ALCS against Oakland, as he wouldn't shut up on the mound over a call in the second inning and got his ass tossed by home plate ump Terry Cooney (pictured), and the Red Sox wound up getting swept. Hi...

"Steroids will follow this guy to his grave"
    2008-02-15 21:35:00
Last December, just before Christmas, I was contacted by a reporter named Lance Pugmire from the Los Angeles Times about a story he was writing about Roger Clemens and former Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette. He contacted me through the fine Red Sox site I write for, Bornintoit.com.I spoke to Lance for about 15 minutes. He asked me about being a Red Sox fan in New York, and for his article, what Red Sox fans thought about Roger Clemens since the Mitchell Report came out. He also asked me about how Duquette was viewed by us now that Clemens' legacy was severely tarnished.I didn't see the article on the Los Angeles Times web site for a long time, and I figured maybe he decided to either postpone or not write the article at all. But I was doing a search tonight, and I discovered that Lance had indeed written the article, and 17 days ago, on January 29. I had no idea it ran, but it is a good article, entitled, "Clemens' Twilight Revisited."Here it is: http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-...

Rocker says he, A-Rod, and others were told how to effectively use steroids
    2008-02-12 01:12:00
Former MLB pitcher and life-long douchebag John Rocker was on an Atlanta radio station Monday talking about steroids in baseball. During the interview admitted to using and testing positive for steroids during the 2000 season, and that commissioner Bud Selig knew about it and “didn’t do anything about it.” Rocker also described a 2002 "spring training talk with the Texas Rangers about steroids and other topics," where he, along with Alex Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro, and Ivan Rodriguez, wer...

    Isn't B-12 Code for Steroids?
    2008-01-05 14:44:00
Is Roger trying to pull a quick one over on us? In 'Juiced' Jose Canseco explains how B-12 is locker-room talk for steroids. Here are some excerpts from the book that I found over at the Baseball Steroid Era blog. Page 211It was so open, the trainers would jokingly call the steroid injections “B12 shots,” and soon the players had picked up on that little code name, too. You’d hear them saying it out loud in front of each other: “I need to go in and get a B12 shot,” a player would say, and everyone would laugh. (Of course, that was the kind of joke you really only made around other steroid users, because obviously they were in the same boat as you. What were they going to do, tell on you? Not hardly.)Page 211-212It was the pitchers that kept the “B12” joke going. For example, I’ve never seen Roger Clemens do steroids, and he never told me that he did. But we’ve talked about what steroids could do for you, in which combinations, and I’ve heard him use the phrase ...

‘Roid Rage: The Effect of Steroids on MMA
    2007-12-16 02:24:53
It's extremely necessary to talk about the growing issue of steroids. I collected lots of responses on steroids from interviews that we've had with many fighters, and I used them to take a look at the effect that it has on the sport of MMA.Steroids have become a major part of almost every sport in America. There is the Barry Bonds controversy in baseball, the Chris Benoit tragedy in wrestling, the Marion Jones admittance in track & field, and the Shawne Merriman mystery in football. The last thing that a sport needs right now is a top star getting caught with steroids.Enter Sean Sherk. At UFC 73 in his first title defense, the UFC Lightweight Champion Sean “The Muscle” Sherk defeated Hermes Franca to retain the Lightweight title. However, in a post-fight drug test Franca tested positive for Drostanolone and Sherk tested positive for Nandrolone, which are both illegal substances. There is still some controversy surrounding Sherk testing positive, because he passed a lie detecto...

Brilliant at Breakfast points to a new trend in outsourcing..."outsourcing FROM India."It's absolutely unbelievable to me, that, jobs which were taken from U.S. workers and outsourced to India, are now being outsourced to other parts of the world (all in the name of cheaper/faster/better).And, pray-tell, what "developing country" is of interest to those Indian companies wishing to outsource? Saving Money Tip #1: Ebay on Steroids
    2007-08-25 20:08:00
I am no tightwad, however I am a firm believer in smart spending for your mental health. Here's the scenario:You are in a massive hurry to the airport as you set your alarm for PM instead of AM. You are jetting off to the Seychelles for a much-needed weeklong decompression session. You wake up in a fright. Your hair is a wild mix of Roseanne Roseannadanna and Billy Idol and still deciding whether or not your vivid dream of eating everything in the fridge was a nightmare or a reality (also a nightmare). Just to refresh your memory:Option one: Schlep your large bags like a hunchback hippo into the murky, sweaty subway for a hair-raising journey of scarcely populated cars and sidelong glances at your fabulous newly refurbished hair-do, perhaps? Yes, cheap...but worth your sanity? Also, you may or may not make your flight. Here's the potential cast of characters sitting cheek-to-cheek with you on the underground:Option two: Hail a cab and spend $40. Give a generous tip because you are going to ask him to drive on two wheels to get there. So, after arriving with time to spare, you have saved yourself a hernia, and have not been held at gunpoint in the dank unbelly of the city. Obviously, next time you should screw your head on right and set your alarm BEFORE you dab on the greasy eye makeup remover and are temporarily blinded, but what's done is done and your sanity is worth more than a few extra dollars. So, in the vein of quicker, easier ways to live your life, I have yet another discovery that came my way. I am an obsessed fan of Ebay and have purchased designer duds for nil, and beauty products galore. And books for school and presents for friends. It's a wonderful place to get a deal and always fun to meet the UPS man with all of your brown boxes! To take it up a notch, there's a fabulous site, aptly named Fat Fingers (http://www.fatfingers.com/). I love it!! Think of it. How many misspellings have you seen on ebay?? A gadzillion? I work as a clinical editor, so I am constantly cringing. Whether you spot them or not, just know there are in the words of Fat Fingers: "Thousands of items on eBay listed with descriptions containing spelling mistakes. These items often expire with no bids on them as no-one can find them.Type in a keyword below and click the Find button. Then click the link and uncover those hidden gems..." So, do as they have told, and click away. You will link directly to Ebay and the search now will include all the potential bad spellings too for a far better deal for you!! Have a blast!PROS: larger array of deals shown, you find the deals others don't find, less bidding on these items, so lower buy price, save money!!, may find hard-to-find items, options to install search box on blog/website, Firefox and Internet Explorer browsersCONS: small amount of time to install search bar on browserWEBSITE: www.fatfingers.comBlast from the past: ...

More Money, More Problems: Steroids in MMA
    2007-08-07 22:56:25
With the latest steroid scandal giving MMA another black eye the time has come for self regulation. It is simply too easy to cheat the system. Now that Dana White has carried the sport to new levels its time to take action. There is no perfect solution but simply leaving the responsibility in the hand of the athletic comission is not enough. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that steroid use lurks in the shadows of virtually every competitive sport. With more scandals and positive tests than I care to keep track of these days I am almost ready to accept that as long as big money is on the line, athletes will do anything to gain that extra advantage. Recently Mixed Martial Arts has come under fire for an alarming host of positive tests and it’s not just how many, but also who has been caught. In the latest UFC title fight between Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca, both champion and challenger tested positive. This is just the latest incident in a string of positive tests that include...

Steroids Update: White Speaks About Sherk, Franca
    2007-08-01 16:33:00
In a recent interview conducted by ESPN The Magazine, Dana white is speaks about the recent steroid frenzy and his thoughts on the situation.ESPN The Magazine conducted a pretty in-depth interview on White's thoughts on the steroid situation going on in the UFC.White expresses his beliefs about UFC Lightweight champion Sean "The Muscle Shark" Sherk and Hermes Franca, both whom tested positive after their showdown at UFC 73.Dana White's opinions about Sherk are the following:ESPN The Magazine: How did you feel personally when Sherk [allegedly] flunked his test?White: I've known Sean Sherk for a long time. He's a really good man. He trains hard and has worked hard to get where he's at. You and me probably have six nanograms [of the steroid Nandrolone] in our system; he had 12. Other guys who've been busted for the same steroid have had over 50 nanograms in their system. What my experts tell me is, there's no way that he would only have 12 in his system. I'm not his father. If he ...

    SHERK TESTS POSITIVE FOR STEROIDS
    2007-07-20 00:00:00
UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk has tested positive for Nandrolone Metabolite following his title defense July 7 in Sacramento, Calif, the state's athletic commission revealed Thursday. Sherk scored a dominating five-round decision win over Brazilian Hermes Franca, whom the CSAC also said tested positive for the banned substance Drostanolone. As a punishment, the current Lightweight Champion will not be able to compete for a full year. After testing both "A" and "B" samples of the urine specimen provided by Sherk the day before the fight, the UFC champion's Nandrolone level was certified by the Director of Science and Technology at the lab conducting the tests at 12 ng/ml, two times higher than the threshold allowed by the CSAC, said the state regulatory body. The Minnesotan lightweight has been fined $2,500 and suspended 365 days from the date of the fight, including an additional 10 days that would need be served if Sherk reapplied for a license to fight in the Golden State.Call...

Benoit Was On Steroids, Sedated Son Before Murder
    2007-07-17 22:12:00
The toxicology results for Chris Benoit and his family are in. It appears that Benoit had a number of anxiety medications as well as injected steroids in his body at the time of the murders. Daniel Benoit was reported to have had Xanax and his body, which investigators believe Benoit used to sedate his son before he killed him with a wrestling chokehold. From ProWrestling.com:"It is confirmed that doctors found Hydrocodone and Xanax in the system of Nancy Benoit. The levels were of therapeutic proportions. Nancy had a 0.184 blood alcohol level; however, they are unable to tell if she had drunk alcohol because the blood alcohol level could have been due to the decomposition process of her body.Chris Benoit’s system was positive for Xanax and Hydrocodone. Both were at therapeutic levels. The only steroid found in Benoit’s system was testosterone. It was found in elevated levels which indicate that he was taking it prior to his death. No evidence of GHB was found in any of the three b...

    Liver Protection while on Steroids
    2007-07-08 05:28:45
All Anabolic Steroids put stress on the liver. So does alcohol, prescription drugs, and asprin. This is the reasoning behind bodybuilding veterans not recommending “oral only cycles”. Oral steroids are methylated in order to bypass breakdown by the liver. As a result they are highly toxic to the liver. The reason why injectable [...]...

    Kenny Peterson Suspended For Steroids
    2007-07-07 00:10:46
Kenny Peterson, whose preospects of making the team heading into Training Camp were long at best, saw those odds increase further with the news that he'll miss the first four games of the 2007 season after testing positive for steroids. The Broncos released an NFL statement saying Peterson will be suspended without pay for the first four games of 2007 starting Aug. 31. The statement said Peterson had violated the policy on anabolic steroids and related substances but didn't specify what he had done. As a result of the suspension, Peterson will forfeit $140,000 of his scheduled base salary of $595,000 for 2007. Peterson will be able to join the Broncos for training camp but won't be able to return to the active roster until Oct. 1 after the Broncos play the Indianapolis Colts. Peterson was cut by Green Bay last September and signed with the Broncos to replace Courtney Brown, who had to undergo a left knee operation five weeks into the season. Green Bay picked Peterson in the ...

Johnnie Morton Tests Positive for Steroids
    2007-06-14 18:30:00
With the recent string of fighters testing positive for a large variety of drugs, it came as no surprise to me when I heard news of Johnnie Morton testing positive for anabolic steroids, according to the California State Athletic Commission. Johnnie Morton made his MMA debut on June 2 at K-1’s Dynamite!! USA event and was brutally knocked out by opponent, Bernard Ackah, in just 38 seconds of the first round. Morton underwent a pre-fight urinalysis and results came back positive with a "very elevated T/E ratio,” in layman terms, very high testosterone. His T/E ratio was 83.9, opposed to 6, the normal industry standard for an athlete. The former NFL wide receiver refused to take a post-fight drug test and placed on indefinite suspension and as a result has had his purse withheld. CSAC Executive Director Armando Garcia has given Morton ten days to explain his reasons for refusing to take the post-fight test. Morton faces a possible revocation of his fighting license and a maximum fi...
