Stroke of Insight: A Window Inside the Brain
    2008-06-30 09:16:01
Scientist Jill Bolte Taylor Given an 'Incredible Education' When She Suffered a Stroke By KATIE ESCHERICH June 24, 2008— Jill Bolte Taylor has always been fascinated by the brain. "I've always been thinking about who am I as a brain, as a mind," Taylor told "Nightline" co-anchor Terry Moran. "To me, it's absolutely phenomenal that this collection of cells is capable of creating for us a perception of the world that seems real and that feels safe. To me that is just a mind-blowing concept."Taylor's own perception of the world was shattered in an instant on Dec. 10, 1996, when the then 37-year-old suffered a left hemisphere stroke. As a scientist, the stroke offered a Taylor a rare opportunity to experience what she studied. She has since shared that experience with the world in a best-selling book, "My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey," and a presentation she gave at the Technology, Entertainment, Design conference in February that has caught on li

    Atherosclerosis and Ischaemic Stroke
    2008-06-01 23:18:00
Atherosclerosis is a disease affecting arterial blood vessels. It is a chronic inflammatory response in the walls of arteries, in large part due to the accumulation of macrophage white blood cells and promoted by low density (especially small particle) lipoproteins (plasma proteins that carry cholesterol and triglycerides) without adequate removal of fats and cholesterol from the macrophages by functional high density lipoproteins(HDL), (see apoA-1 Milano). It is commonly referred to as a "hardening" or "furring" of the arteries. It is caused by the formation of multiple plaques within the arteries. The atheromatous plaque is divided into three distinct components: 1. The atheroma ("lump of porridge", from Athera, porridge in Greek,), which is the nodular accumulation of a soft, flaky, yellowish material at the center of large plaques, composed of macrophages nearest the lumen of the artery 2. Underlying areas of cholesterol crystals 3. Calcification at the outer base of older/more

James Garner recovering from mild stroke
    2008-05-15 21:23:00
James Garner was hospitalized last week after suffering a mild stroke at his home. Garner's publicist told the AP that the 80-year-old actor is doing well and should be home soon. While Garner's acting career has produced a lengthy and diverse body of work, for a lot of us here at Autoblog, it's hard to think of Jim Garner and not think of Jim Rockford and his gold Firebird Esprit. We're sure there's also no shortage of readers who instantly associate him with his starring role in John Frankenheimer's Grand Prix, hailed by many as the greatest racing movie of all time. Garner was also very active in motorsports in real life, owning American International Racing from 1967-69. He has raced on and off-road, and was inducted to the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame because of his role in elevating the stature of that particular branch of motorsport in the late sixties and early seventies. He's also driven the Indy 500 pace car three times. So, regardless of whether you know him best as Mav

Greater wealth tied to lower stroke risk
    2008-04-25 20:57:00
NEW YORK - FOR people aged 50 and 64 years, being wealthy seems to protect them against having a stroke, according to new research. After age 65, however, wealth appears to make little difference in stroke risk. 'We confirmed that lower wealth, education and income are associated with increased stroke up to age 65, and wealth is the strongest predictor of stroke among the factors we looked at,' Dr Mauricio Avendano, who was involved in the research, noted in a written statement. 'After age 65, the association of education, income and wealth with stroke are very weak, and wealth did not clearly predict stroke,' said Dr Avendano, of Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Each year about 780,000 Americans suffer strokes; about 27 per cent of strokes occur before age 65, according to the American Heart Association. Dr Avendano and co-investigator M. Maria Glymour assessed the effect of income (i.e., annual earnings), wealth (total of all assets minus liabilities) and educa

Suplemen Asam Folat Turunkan Risiko Stroke
    2008-04-19 00:10:00

    Stroke: Rusaknya Sel-sel Otak
    2008-04-19 00:08:00

Apakah Anak-anak Juga Bisa Terkena Stroke?
    2008-04-19 00:05:00

    Stroke Sepintas Juga Bahayakan Jiwa
    2008-04-18 23:59:00

Daytime dozing- novel stroke and heart attack risk factor
    2008-03-01 21:57:06
Do you have habit of sleeping during the day i.e., daytime dozing? If yes, be careful! One recent research has shown that risk of stroke was two to four-times greater in those with moderate dozing habits. Researchers have zeroed in what they call a "novel risk factor" for stroke, especially among the elderly: dozing during the day. The study was done by the researchers at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons.image by markhillaryAccording to the study's lead author Bernadette Boden-Albala, this suggests that daytime dozing" may be an important and noval stroke risk factor". Findings of the study were reported at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference 2008.Among the study's 2,153 participants, the risk of stroke was seen to be 2.6 times greater for those classified as doing "some dozing" compared to those with "no dozing". Those classified in the " significant dozing" group had a 4.5 times higher risk." Those are significant numbers", said B

    Advanced Therapy Aids Stroke Patients
    2008-01-24 08:04:08
(HealthDay News) -- Therapies that attack blood clots directly in the brain may benefit ischemic stroke patients who don't respond to the standard treatment using clot-busting drugs. So says a U.S. study that was to have been presented Tuesday at the 20th annual International Symposium on Endovascular Therapy, in Hollywood, Fla.Ischemic strokes -- which account for about 83 percent of strokes -- occur when a small clot blocks an artery in the brain and halts blood flow, according to the American Stroke Association. If the clot isn't cleared and blood flow restored, the patient will suffer permanent brain damage or death."Often patients who fail to improve with standard intravenous (IV) stroke therapy aren't given the chance to succeed with more advanced intra-arterial (IA) therapy, because it's thought that it won't work if IV therapy didn't, and that it will increase the risk of bleeding in the brain," study author Dr. Christopher Zylak, director of neurointerventional radiology at Sac

    Sayur dan Buah Cegah Stroke
    2007-12-05 02:04:00
Sumber: Journal of the Ameri
