High School Students Need a Bridge to College
    2008-08-14 02:09:00
Annually, over 10 million high school students begin the process of applying to college. Their expectation is that college will be the same as high school. They remember getting 15 minutes of homework and studying on the bus on their way to the first class of the day. Everything seemed so easy and studying sufficiently was not a big deal. Unfortunately many students arrive to college unaware that they may not have adequate preparation for the rigors of college. Something needs to be done to bridge the gap in college preparation. It seems that school superintendents and college presidents rarely talk about college preparation best practices. Therefore the high school curriculum seems far apart from the college curriculum. The local high school is mostly concerned about meeting state standards that are established concerning each course. They are also entrapped by No Child Left Behind policies that threaten schools with Adequate Yearly Progress requirements. Teachers are spending mor

    2008-08-05 09:21:00

    Learning Tips for Students
    2008-08-05 01:34:00
Long ago, there was a time, when parents told children to read slowly and loudly to understand everything they read. A lot of things have changed. Today's children have bigger syllabi to learn. Icelandic Medical Students Volunteer in Palestine
    2008-07-04 13:39:00
A few Icelandic nursing and medical students, and one student from the junior college Kvennaskólinn in Reykjavík, are currently acting as volunteers in Palestine. Some of them teach English for Project Hope, others assist the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS).Nursing student Gunnar Pétursson, who belongs to the group of volunteers, told Fréttabladid their help is much needed.“Just us being in an ambulance, even though we don’t do anything else, means it will be allowed to pass through a road block. Palestinians’ freedom to travel is severely impaired. Patients are dying because ambulances are stopped,” Pétursson said.Pétursson explained that the group had originally planned to volunteer in Kenya, but one of the volunteers, Anna Tómasdóttir, suggested they go to Palestine instead where she had volunteered before. Most of the medical work the volunteers with a background in medicine have to perform is similar to the work in Iceland, Pétursson said.

11 Prairie View nursing students caught cheating on test
    2008-05-30 10:21:40
Eleven Prairie View A&M University nursing students were caught cheating on a comprehensive examination last month and were not allowed to graduate with their class, the university said. The students, who were using cell phones to text-message other students who had finished the exam, will be allowed to re-enroll this fall and will be required to take a course in ethics. They also must take the examination again. If they pass, they will be allowed to graduate in December."We never want to have any type of break in our university policies," said Betty Adams, dean of the nursing school. "We always take it as a matter of criticality when there is one. We have a protocol in the university and believe in due process. We handled this as we would any other matter on any other day."Other students noticed the cheating and reported it to faculty members who were present. An ensuing university investigation brought students before a student court."They did go through student hearings," said school

Students who are deemed 'behavior' problems can expect to be strip searched
    2008-05-20 07:36:46
"I was wondering if you are aware of what goes on in the Clark County school system in regards to the treatment of students, ... policies and actions that border on something straight out of a prison. "Students who are deemed 'behavior' problems are expelled from regular school and sent to something called 'behavior school'. Once there they can expect to be strip searched -- strip searched. I still find this hard to comprehend. The system apparently treats children as some sort of enemy, to be controlled, to ensure docile compliance. read more

Oshawa students lecture speeders on dangers of their behavior
    2008-05-19 12:41:00
Speeders caught in in a radar trap in Oshawa, Ontario this week were offered a choice of punishment. They could opt for a traditional ticket and fine, or they could listen to a lecture about the dangers of their misdeeds -- not from John Law, mind you, but from local teens participating in a program that's basically about using public shaming as a way to combat speeding.Drivers who opted for the lecture over the fine (and seriously, who wouldn't) would then be read a one-page essay by a local teenage boy or girl. These essays feature accident stats, reminders of the potential consequences of speeding, and in some cases, anecdotes about how speeders had negatively impacted the students' lives. According to the Toronto Star, the assembled teens "jeered" speeders as they were pulled over -- as if getting pulled over isn't annoying enough to begin with.Local police reps quoted in the article seem to love the program, claiming it's a better deterrent because people given regular tickets jus

Many Students & Teachers Accept Christ
    2008-05-17 09:58:00
We have been busy so far in May, speaking in 3 schools in the first 2 weeks of the month. Our special project in the schools is called Quality Of Life, and we speak about how to have a good future and a higher quality of life with joy & peace & hope. We speak about the Body, the Soul, and the Spirit, and in the final part we share the Good News of Jesus plainly & directly. Afterwards we have a prayer time for students & teachers to invite Christ into their hearts & lives to be their Lord & Savior. After this we hand out a great discipleship tool called Livro Da Vida (Book Of Life), which a ministry here in Brazil offers to all churches to use in the schools. After this we have a time for questions about the US and about the English language, which is alot of fun for us and for the students & teachers. Brazilian students and teachers have a great interest and curiosity about the US and the culture and the language, and this opens many doors for us to share Ch

Morial encourages students to embrace diversity at St. Peter's Prep's Arrupe Lecture
    2008-05-07 20:54:00
Mark Morial has seen it all. As a youngster, he grew up going to mostly white schools in New Orleans as one of the few African-Americans in the schools. He always got a strong education, since he was taught by the Jesuits. As he grew older, and got into politics, and wound up serving as mayor of New Orleans from 1994 to 2002.Last night, be brought his experiences as leader of one of the nation's most black cities to St. Peter's Prep as the keynote speaker of the 11th-annual Arrupe Lecture Series at St. Peter's Prep. And though he didn't speak with the passion you might expect from a civil rights leader, he still brought a great message of hope — of hope that future generations of Americans will embrace the diversity that will envelop the nation by 2050."Race in America is such a tough topic," he said. "It causes people to be so uncomfortable, and people are often uncomfortable talking about race, whether at the office, at school, wherever. Despite that, have we come a long way in thi

Students Credit Card for Good Credit History
    2008-05-02 16:17:33
People who use credit cards find it very convenient because they do not have to carry a lot of cash with them to make pricey purchases. Credit cards can also convenient for students. Student can pay for books, tutorial fees, boarding fees, & etc with their student credit cards. Having a credit card as a student also has its risks of falling into a bad credit trap. Come to think of it, being a student with a credit card could carry a higher risk of being in financial debt because a student is in general, without a regular income. On the other hand, using a student credit card responsibly will make you have a good credit history!Anyway, the final decision though, is entirely up to you as a student. There are a lot of great companies & banks offering student credit cards & it’s up to you to find the best credit card for your needs as a student. Students urge Jerusalem's absentee homeowners to rent
    2008-04-29 02:25:00
While many Diaspora Jews consider their Israeli homes an important investment in the Jewish state, many locals say absentee homeowners have driven up market prices, drained the market of available rentals and made many Jerusalem neighborhoods unaffordable for Israelis. That's why a coalition of student activists has launched a campaign to persuade the absentee homeowners to open up their homes to Israeli renters."We think it's great that foreign Jews are buying here and investing in Jerusalem," said David Uziel, 29, a graduate student in urban planning at Hebrew University. "But if they keep their apartments empty, they are weakening Jerusalem."
