Design Study: Nissan 240/Fairlady Z successor
    2008-08-21 13:51:00
Nissan's plans for an affordable, rear-wheel-drive coupe to slot in below the current Z have been rumored for years and we've been informed that internal politics have killed off at least one revival of an iconic Datsun. If work ever gets underway on another budget coupe, Nissan should seriously pursue Polish designer Iacoski and his interpretation of a 240Z/Fairlady revival.Aft of the a-pillar, Iacoski's inspiration is clearly apparent, blending the old 240's slopping roofline and short rear overhangs with the muscular haunches and angled fender flares of the current 350Z. Up front, the Photoshop wizard retained the old Fairlady's elongated hood and power bulge, and matched them with a front air dam, bumper and headlamp arrangement influenced by the second GTR Proto concept. We're totally smitten and think you'll be equally entertained when you check out the gallery of images below.[Source: Digimods via NihonCar]Tag: Coupes, Nissan, Rendered Speculation ...

Detroit automakers take hit in U of M satisfaction study
    2008-08-20 16:06:00
After years of incremental improvement in customer satisfaction, a study from the University of Michigan shows that overall, Detroit automakers have declined versus their Japanese and German rivals. The study, which polls customers with six-month-old to three-year-old vehicles, shows that U.S. automakers have stalled in their quest to improve satisfaction. The problem? Rising gas prices have made truck and SUV customers very unhappy with their vehicles, which reflects negatively in the overall score. The Chevrolet brand was hit hardest, with scores dropping 3.7% versus last year's score. The bow tie brand was ahead of only Dodge and Jeep. The news isn't all bad for General Motors, though, as truck and SUV-less Saturn posted the industry's largest gain of 4.9 points to get within one point of Toyota and Honda's score of 86. Buick and Cadillac also performed very well in the survey, with each GM brand scoring an 85. Ford was flat year over year, but the Blue Oval's score of 80 was two poi...

Study: Less talk, more pills from psychiatrists
    2008-08-08 04:35:51
CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Cartoons about the psychiatrist's couch were recently the subject of a museum exhibition. Now, the couch itself may be headed for a museum.Psychiatrists who used talk therapy with all their patients prescribed fewer pills, a study found.A new study finds a significant decline in psychotherapy practiced by U.S. psychiatrists. The expanded use of pills and insurance policies that favor short office visits are among the reasons, said lead author Dr. Ramin Mojtabai of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland."The 'couch,' or, more generally, long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy, was for so long a hallmark of the practice of psychiatry. It no longer is," Mojtabai said.Today's psychiatrists get reimbursed by insurance companies at a lower rate for a 45-minute psychotherapy visit than for three 15-minute medication visits, he explained. His study found that the percentage of patients' visits to psychiatrists for psychotherapy, or talk th...

Middle-Aged Misery Spans Globe, Study Says
    2008-08-04 02:09:00
If you think turning 40 is bad, just wait until you turn 44. Researchers say that’s the age when people feel most depressed.Using data on two million people from 80 countries, researchers found an extraordinarily consistent pattern in depression and happiness levels that leaves us most miserable in middle age.Using a sample of one million people from the U.K., researchers discovered that for both men and women the probability of depression peaks around 44 years of age.The only country which recorded a significant gender difference was in the U.S., where unhappiness reached a peak at around 40 for women and 50 for men."Some people suffer more than others but in our data the average effect is large," said Professor Andrew Oswald, a University of Warwick Economist in a news release. "It happens to men and women, to single and married people, to rich and poor, and to those with and without children."Oswald added that while nobody quite knows why we see this consistency, he said he has so...

LOLBy : Irdiani Mohd Salleh KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian women believe in "retail therapy", with most of them spending an average of RM180 each on shopping in a month. Almost three-quarters of women surveyed recently said shopping was therapeutic and a stress-reliever.These were the findings of a survey conducted by global market research company Synovate on more than 1,000 Malaysian women recently. The respondents, aged between 15 and 64, were from all income levels. They were asked on their retail preferences and spending habits for clothing, accessories, skin care products and cosmetics as well as electronic gadgets.Synovate Malaysia managing director Steve Murphy said 74 per cent admitted that shopping was therapeutic and helped to relieve stress. However, most are not extravagant as they only spent 17 per cent of their monthly income...

    Using Google Apps: Case Study
    2008-07-30 19:31:26
Jason Slator writes about using Google Apps in his technology blog. Here are few excerpts from posting:"To gain a level of integration we have to rely on the gadgets/widgets on the start page and, whilst usable, this is where this sort of technology shows its infancy as some widgets are better integrated than others and business widgets are mixed in and available together with the leisure and social widgets.""We still have to explore Google Web Pages, Sites and Chat but at the moment I can’t see much value in migrating to Google Mail as Exchange Server and Outlook are working well and OWA is our current preferred solution for offsite email access""The applications have the benefit of feeling familiar, if a little cluttered at times, but a little more integration and intuitiveness in use would make the system more appealing - for example a plug-in for Office for loading and saving documents. In an ideal world a combination of Google Apps and Office Live Workspace would be an ideal ans...

VW swabs deck with Touareg "North Sails" design study
    2008-07-22 06:29:00
Volkswagen has treaded carefully down the path first blazed by the largely ignored Mercury Villager Nautica with a sailing-themed Touareg concept that has debuted at the famous Travemünder Woche, which we're told is the second largest annual race week for sailing in Germany. Teaming up with a company called North Sails, which actually sells boat sails unlike Mercury's branding partner, Nautica, which sells polo shirts, VW has added a new ground effects kit, a yellow rub strip, watery-blue reflectors, and 19-inch wheels. Stepping aboard, occupants will find a cabin decked out with teak flooring, LED lighting accents, white leather seats with aquamarine stitching, and an alcantara headliner. We think we've seen that window tint color on our beloved Matchbox SuperFast cars from the early 1980s, too. North Sails branding shows up in the form of logos on the B-pillar and stainless steel sill plates. The instrument panel gets a compass, and there's also a pair of binoculars in the center co...

How Food Affects The Brain - Study
    2008-07-17 09:03:00
Our brain needs food nutrition to stay healthy. When you feel tired or depressed or just kind of out of sorts, it's because your brain feels these things. Scientist have found different ways food affects the brain. The major areas in this study include:Benefit of Omega-3 Fatty Acid OilsEffects of diet on mental health can be transmitted across generationsJunk food and fast food negatively affect the brain's synapsesFolic acid can help reduce the age-related decline in cognitive functionConsuming excess calories cause free radical damage to the brain"Food is like a pharmaceutical compound that affects the brain," said Fernando Gómez-Pinilla, a UCLA professor of neurosurgery and physiological science who has spent years studying the effects of food, exercise and sleep on the brain. "Diet, exercise and sleep have the potential to alter our brain health and mental function. This raises the exciting possibility that changes in diet are a viable strategy for enhancing cognitive abilities,...

Genetic study finds malarial traits in Northeast
    2008-07-03 04:18:00
Shillong, July 3 (PTI) A study by the Anthropological Survey of India (ASI) on the genetic characteristics of the inhabitants of India's Northeast considered as a 'malaria zone' - may open up a fresh lead among researchers to develop a new drug for the mosquito-related disease. The ongoing study has found that deficiency of enzyme G-6-PD (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase), which helps red blood cells (RBCs) function normally is a common sex-linked trait in the region, M Arabind Singh of the ASI's Northeast Regional Centre told PTI on the sidelines of an exhibition here.G-6-PD is one of many enzymes that help the body process carbohydrates and turn them into energy. It also protects red blood cells from potentially harmful byproducts that can accumulate when a person takes certain medications or when the body is fighting an infection. The ASI study detected cases of disorder like jaundice among those G-6-PD-deficient persons who had intake of chloroquine. "Though researchers have found e...

Broccoli Fights Cancer - Study Shows How
    2008-07-02 08:34:00
Research continues to show how eating real food prevents all kinds of disease, namely cancers. Now the first Human trial shows men who eat broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables have a reduced risk of prostate cancer - with broccoli having the greatest protection. Read the story on Reuters:LONDON (Reuters) - Just a few more portions of broccoli each week may protect men from prostate cancer, British researchers reported on Wednesday. The researchers believe a chemical in the food sparks hundreds of genetic changes, activating some genes that fight cancer and switching off others that fuel tumors, said Richard Mithen, a biologist at Britain's Institute of Food Research. There is plenty of evidence linking a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables to reduced cancer risk. But the study published in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS One is the first human trial investigating the potential biological mechanism at work, Mithen added in a telephone interview."Everybody says eat y...

Solar Energy and the Feasibility Study. What Does It Mean?
    2008-06-28 07:01:53
The United States has lagged behind western European nations in getting solar energy projects off the ground for the last two decades, but now, with the price of oil sky high and global warming being taken seriously, venture capital is pouring in. Florida, California, and the desert Southwest lead the way in both operational and planned solar power plants to provide cheap renewable energy to hundreds of thousands of residential and commercial customers. Michigan’s sagging economy is being boosted by green entrepreneurs who are turning out solar panels and roof tiles using the skills of unemployed Detroit auto workers. The future of solar looks bright. But wait. Here comes the government. Late last month, The Feds put a moratorium on new applications for solar power plants planned on government land pending a massive environmental impact study. The Bureau of Land Management which administers more than 100 million acres in the western states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada,...

Women Who Eat Whole Foods Live Longer-Study
    2008-06-25 10:04:00
I put a lot of thought into what I eat and feed my family. I'm not a health nut - at least not yet. I'm just a wife and mom who wants to be around for my family for a really long time. Now I have some proof that what I eat does make a difference in health and dying too soon.A newly released study has linked what women eat to their risk of dying from certain diseases.Harvard's School of Public Health studied over 72,000 women for 18 years to see whether eating habits played a part in dying from heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and stroke. What they found is not surprising, but it does add credibility to all those health nuts who say we need to eat better in order to live better. Here's what they found...Women who ate a "prudent diet" including lots of veggies, fruits, legumes, and whole grains had 28% lower risk of dying from heart disease and 17% lower risk of dying from cancer, diabetes, and stroke.Women who ate a "Western diet" including more meat, processed, refined, and sugary food...

Fourth Singapore university should cap intake at 2,500, says study
    2008-06-24 23:20:30
The next Singapore university should be a publicly-funded institution offering disciplines such as Design and Architecture, Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Business and Information Technology, with an integrated approach centred on these disciplines. This was the recommendation made by the Committee on the Expansion of the University Sector in a preliminary report released on Tuesday. The committee also proposed that the fourth local university should set an annual intake of about 2,000–2,500 students and provide the bulk of the additional university places required to achieve the target 30 per cent cohort participation rate outlined by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the 2007 National Day Rally. While recognising the progress made by Singapore's existing universities, the committee - which began studying the education landscape last September - asked that consideration be given to the introduction of a liberal arts education in Singapore. Since the the National Universi...

Patients Who Have Been Pulled Back From the Brink of Death Help Nurse to Study a Controversial Phenomenon
    2008-06-21 03:47:07

The setting, experts say, provided well-documented information on near-death experiences (NDEs) which does not fit easily within the parameters of the normal systems of explanation. One patient reported encountering a dead relative who gave a message to pass on to another member of the family who was still alive, information which stunned the receiver because it had been a secret and was impossible the patient had prior knowledge of it.In another, a patient wh...

Study: Bumper stickers = Aggressive drivers
    2008-06-19 08:33:00
Colorado State University researchers have recently concluded a study on driver behavior revealing something that may or may not be surprising to you: drivers who personalize their cars with bumper stickers, custom plates and other such markings are likely to be more aggressive and confrontational out on the road. It's all about marking your territory, say the CSU eggheads. When people use their rear bumper to, say, advertise who they voted for in the last three presidential elections (along with every associated platform issue), brag about how smart their precious kids are, or remind us about the highly unfortunate event that took place on October 27, 2004, it's really the adhesive-based equivalent of what that next-door-neighbor's dog does when he lifts his leg on your gardenias. Those stickers make cars an extension of their drivers' home turf, which they will defend if they feel you're threatening it in any way. Conversely, people whose autos retain their stock appearance are more ...

Revisiting “Josh Hamilton Vs. Mark Teixeira: A Statistical Study”
    2008-06-15 15:46:05
Back on March 17th, I scrupulously examined a Tim Cowlishaw-inspired question that was, without a doubt, one of the more fascinating subjects I’ve ever explored in this space: Just how many of the runs lost as a direct result of [Mark] Teixeira’s departure can be regained through the acquisition of [Josh] Hamilton? A “quick and dirty” [...]...

Ever since Bruce Lee hit the screen with his Kung Fu flying kicks, people of the West has been mesmerized and in awe of the martial art method. Jet Li popularized the martial art called Wushu, which is a far more graceful, and yet lethal and quick. Jackie Chan also hit the screen as a Kung Fu...

We may all be space aliens: study
    2008-06-14 02:01:00
PARIS - GENETIC material from outer space found in a meteorite in Australia may well have played a key role in the origin of life on Earth, according to a study to be published on Sunday.European and US scientists have proved for the first time that two bits of genetic coding, called nucleobases, contained in the meteor fragment, are truly extraterrestrial.Previous studies had suggested that the space rocks, which hit Earth some 40 years ago, might have been contaminated upon impact. Both of the molecules identified, uracil and xanthine, 'are present in our DNA and RNA', said lead author Zita Martins, a researcher at Imperial College London.RNA, or ribonucleic acid, is another key part of the genetic coding that makes up our bodies. These molecules would also have been essential to the still-mysterious alchemy that somehow gave rise, some four billion years ago, to life itself.'We know that meteorites very similar to the Murchison meteorite, which is the one we analysed, were delivering ...

Vitamin Doesn't Work As Claimed Because It Doesn't Dissolve - Study
    2008-06-12 10:31:00
This new study shows a popular vitamin supplement aimed at diabetics is not as effective as most advertisements for it claim because it does not dissolve. The study published in the journal BioMed Central found that benfotiamine -- a synthetic derivative of the vitamin B1 -- does not actually dissolve and penetrate cell membranes as well as often claimed.Vitamin B1, or thiamine, plays a key role in keeping cells healthy, and previous research has shown that diabetics have less of it in their blood.Simple lab tests showed that benfotiamine as sold to consumers was not lipid-soluble -- which means it did not dissolve in organic solvents and oils to boost health by working quickly."It did not dissolve so it can't work its way through the membranes," Bettendorff said in a telephone interview. ReutersDid you see this article about pills not dissolving in your body and ending up in the septic tanks? This is one thing that is wrong with any synthetic pills. Here's another view on pills stuck in...

Text Messaging Actually Good for Concentration, Study Finds
    2008-06-11 09:34:00
The Find: If you think text messaging is a distraction for your team, think again. A new study finds workers who use text messaging at the office actually report fewer interruptions. The Source: A recent study by researchers at Ohio State University and University of California, Irvine published in the Journal of Computer Mediated Communication. The Takeaway: The researchers spoke to nearly 1,000 randomly selected people from 12 different US metropolitan areas who worked at least 30 hours per week in an office and used a computer for at least five hours in a workday. What they found explodes the myth that Yahoo or G-chat is holding back your employees’ productivity. The research showed: Instant messaging was often used as a substitute for other, more disruptive forms of communication such as the telephone, e-mail, and face-to-face conversations. Using instant messaging led to more conversations on the computer, but the conversations were briefer, said R. Kelly Garrett, co-author of th...

Antibacterial wipes can spread superbugs: study
    2008-06-05 09:30:55
By Michael KahnTue Jun 3, 1:11 PM ET Disinfectant wipes routinely used in hospitals may actually spread drug-resistant bacteria rather than kill the dangerous infections, British researchers said on Tuesday. While the wipes killed some bacteria, a study of two hospitals showed they did not get them all and could transfer the so-called superbugs to other surfaces, Gareth Williams, a microbiologist at Cardiff University, said. The findings presented at the American Society of Microbiology's General Meeting in Boston focused on bacteria that included methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. "What we have found is there is a high risk," Williams, who led the study, said by telephone. "We need to give guidance to the staff on how to use the wipes because we found there is a possibility of cross transfer." MRSA infections can range from boils to more severe infections of the bloodstream, lungs and surgical sites....

For the exterior all chrome trim has been removed and replaced with matching dark blue trim. Wörthersee 2008: VW Golf GTI Performance study on display
    2008-05-24 07:41:00
VW hasn't released any info on the car you see here, which is called the Golf GTI Performance design study, so we'll call it like we see it. A black-and-copper checkered flag motif adorns the hatch, which is enhanced with a widebody kit, lowered suspension, and the expected wheel/tire upgrade. Out back, the GTI's rear bumper cover is covered with more grillework than you'll find on the rump of a Lamborghini Gallardo. A pair of giant exhaust outlet cutouts are also built into the corners. And speaking of Lamborghinis, VW has fitted the Golf GTI Performance with the dreaded "Lambo doors," which look predictably ridiculous here. The exterior color scheme carries through to the passenger cabin, which gets a 2+1 sport seating arrangement and what appears to be a substantial audio system install. Not our cup 'o tea, but it'll probably go over very well with the VW tuners who take part in the WörtherSEMA... er.. Wörthersee Tour.[Source: Volkswagen]...

5% of Breast Tumors Double In Size In One Month, Study Shows.
    2008-05-08 10:16:00
A new study of almost 400,000 women finds that 5 percent of breast tumors are capable of doubling in size within a one-month period. The research, published in the journal Breast Cancer Research, makes a case for the importance of early detection in breast cancer. The study found that breast tumors are more aggressive in young women and that the rate of growth in tumors decreases as the age of diagnosis increases.Harald Weedon-Fekjaer of the Department of Etiological Research at the Cancer Registry of Norway and colleagues studied 395,188 women between the ages of 50- and 69-years-old. They found that tumor growth varies considerably between subjects.About one in 20 tumors double in size in just over a month from 10 to 20 millimeters, while similar tumors took more than six years to grow to this size. Researchers estimated the mean time for a tumor to double in size from 10 to 20 millimeters in diameter is 1.7 years.Researchers hope the research provides a new approach to estimating the ...

Disturbing New Study About Obesity And Weight Loss
    2008-05-06 22:40:11
Study Shows Some Americans Would Choose Divorce, Depression and Alcoholism Over ObesityMay 23, 2006 -- What would you be willing to sacrifice if it ensured you would never be fat?Would you give up a year of your life? Or 10 years?Would you rather be divorced, unable to have children, depressed, alcoholic?A disturbing new study out of Yale University's Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity found that nearly half -- 46 percent -- of 4,283 participants would rather give up a year of their life than be obese. Fifteen percent were willing to give up 10 years. In fact, a surprisingly large number of participants were willing to make extreme sacrifices if they could be sure they would never be obese. These are hypothetical questions, of course, and the answers are not set in stone. Obesity is a killer, so some participants probably figured that they were going to die earlier anyway if they were obese, but what surprised the researchers was the number of people who were willing to make extreme...

Quick Study: Money and Happiness Under the Microscope
    2008-05-01 00:06:00
by Laura RowleyUniversity of Southern California professor Richard Easterlin, the father of research on well-being, began studying happiness in the late 1960s, when happiness wasn't cool. I've interviewed him a number of times over the years.Early in his career, Easterlin examined data on economic growth and reported happiness in a range of countries, and discovered that big jumps in growth in nations such as the United States and Japan were accompanied by declines, or only marginal increases, in reported happiness. This became known as the "Easterlin Paradox."A Paradox RevisitedRecently, Betsey Stevenson and Justin Wolfers, two economists at the University of Pennsylvania, reexamined the data, and suggest that economic growth does indeed correlate with happiness, according to a New York Times report. They found that people in countries with higher incomes report higher life satisfaction.National economic growth and happiness is one thing, personal wealth and happiness is something els...

Study Links Suicide Rates With Earth's Magnetic Field
    2008-04-28 20:07:00
Russia: A study conducted by Oleg Schumilov has linked suicide rates to changes in Earth's magnetic field. Schumilov studied suicide rates in Kirovsk over 50 years and found a correlation between peaks in the magnetic field and suicide rates.Schumilov stated that his study did not prove causality but noted that there were already studies that connected health and magnetics. An Australian study concluded that female suicide rates climbed significantly during geomagnetic storm activity.According to Kelly Posner, a psychiatrist at Columbia University, the most likely explanation is that magnetic storm activity desynchronises the circadian rhythm and disrupts the production of the sleep-promoting brain chemical melatonin. Humans Came Close to Extinction, Study Says
    2008-04-27 18:30:00
An extensive genetic study by researchers at Stanford University suggests that human beings nearly became extinct about 70,000 years ago, apparently because of a drought. The population may have dropped to as low as 2,000 individuals.Researcher Spencer Wells calls the finding "truly an epic drama, written in our DNA." Human beings emerged in Africa about 200,000 years ago with "mitochondrial Eve," the mother of all humanity, and spread to other places 60,000 years ago.Little has been known about the intervening 140,000 years, but the new study suggests that severe environmental conditions between 135,000 and 90,000 years ago forced people into tiny, isolated groups. The worldwide human population today is 6.6 billion. Source: news.yahoo.com...
