| Barack Obama Supports Ethanol Subsidies, Promises to Starve Entire Third World | | 2008-08-06 09:33:04 | | It has not even been six months since America's subsidization of ethanol turned into an abject disaster. Not only did it waste taxpayers' money on a product that cannot survive in the free market, it had the result of increasing the price of food everywhere and literally starving thousands of poor people throughout the world. Subsequently, one would expect removing all ethanol subsidies would be a nonissue; then again we have to remember that we are in an election cycle where all intelligent decisions get thrown out the window.Barack Obama just announced this week that he supports a new $300 billion pork barrel farm bill, which includes subsides for ethanol. He might as well be promising to starve the entire Third World while making it more difficult for the American family to afford their groceries. But, we all know that the Midwestern farming states tend to support these bloated subsides, and Barack Obama implicitly believes it is ethical buying votes with other people's money.Th... | | By: Copious Dissent - Your Daily Dose of Liberty | | |
| | Subsidies slowing Morocco's inflation to 3.1% | | 2008-07-10 18:10:00 | | According to the High Planning Commission (HCP), Moroccan consumer prices are likely to rise 3.1% this year, compared with 3.8% in 2007, as subsidies on fuel and basic foods offset soaring world commodity prices. Finance Minister Salaheddine Mezouar (pictured above) last month forecast annual inflation of 2.7% to 2.9%, up from an initial estimate of 2.0%.The HCP said inflation would be below the rate in many developing countries because of the state subsidies, which would cost more than MAD 40 billion this year, way ahead of the MAD 15 billion foreseen in the 2008 finance law.Morocco imports all of its petroleum needs and around half its grain. The subsidies shield the country from high imported fuel and commodity prices and allow the 14% of Moroccans who live in poverty to feed themselves. The IMF said last month the cost of the subsidies could double as a share of GDP this year to reach about 5%, more than the government spends on investment."Thi... | | By: THE VIEW FROM FEZ | | |
