Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament RoundUp 2008
    2008-07-28 07:17:00
The Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament ended yesterday.Hakuho had wrapped up the Emperors Cup on day 13 so the only real interest was whether he could end with a 15 win 0 loss record.Which he did by beating Kotooshu in the last bout of the final day.Kotooshu who won the last basho and had earlier hopes of promotion to the rank of yokozuna ended up with a 9-6 record.Baruto finished 10-5 and ozeki Kaio with a 9-6 win loss record. An eel and rice bento available in many shops at this time of year.Eel is seen as giving people stamina and energy in the hot, humid days of summer.Today with the temperature again in the mid 30s Nagoya had thunder and lightning throughout the day.Intermittent showers meant that carrying an umbrella was necessary.

Friday Flash..More from the Nagoya Sumo Tournament
    2008-07-17 19:35:00
A couple of shots from the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament I attended earlier in the week.Below is a photo of yokozuna Asashoryu performing the traditional dohyo-iri or "entering the ring" ceremony.Accompanied by two lower ranked wrestlers and a judge, the yokozuna goes through an elaborate ceremony. After clapping his hands to get the attention of the gods he extends his hands to his sides and turns his palms upward to show he isnt hiding any weapons. He next rises one leg in the air then the other. Finally he stomps each leg down onto the the surface of the ring or dohyo symbolically driving evil away. After he has finished and his attendants have left the other yokozuna Hakuho repeated the ceremony. The second shot shows some of the merchandise and souvenirs available from the stalls outside the gym.Various towels, cloths and handkerchiefs were available.A multitude of Hello Kitty goods was also on sale.Pens, cookies and cloths bearing Hello Kitty figures in sumo garb were displayed in each st

Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament July 2008
    2008-07-14 06:32:00
I dragged myself up early and along to the second day of the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament. There was a line of people already waiting when I arrived at the ticket office. After standing in an orderly fashion for 10 minutes in the rapidly rising heat I purchased my ticket. And escaped into the air conditioned chasm of the Nagoya Prefectural Gym.In time to see the first bout of the day at 8:35pm.There were two shock results from the opening day.First Kotooshu, the ozeki from Bulgaria, who won the last tournament and is looking for another Emperors Cup to gain promotion to yokozuna, lost. Not surprisng really considering that his opponent was Aminishiki. His record against him now stands at 0-6 including one loss by default. The other surprise was Asashoryu's loss to Toyonoshima.Asa's record against him was 5-0 until yesterdays bout when Toyonoshima narrowly avoided touching the dirt before Asashoryu. The photo above shows a bowl of chanko nabe. Its a key dish in the diet of a sumo wrestler. It conta

    Sumo Practice
    2008-07-07 06:52:00
The Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament is due to start this Sunday July 13th.Last week sumo wrestlers descended upon Nagoya and have been practicing in various beya or stables dotted round Nagoya in preparation for the 15 day competition.I tagged along with a friend early this morning to see the wrestlers at ozeki Chiyotakai's stable go through their paces.Members of the public can watch the workout provided they remain quiet and they dont use their flash when taking photos. There was one amusing incident when a man arrived with a small pit bull terrier. The animals asthmatic wheezing reverberated around the courtyard much to the other onlookers amusement.Of course it was only a matter of time before the owner and dog were told politely to depart. The photo above shows umbrella bearing onlookers gathered outside the building that houses the practice sumo ring where the wrestlers practice. The stable occupies quite a large area of land and there are a number of buildings and structures on the bl

    Review: Nike Sumo Squared 5900
    2008-03-11 09:49:35
Square was all the rage in 2007, with the original Sumo Squared, Callaway FT-i and various other models reaching the market. The initial buzz factor was huge as everyone seemed to love to talk about super high MOI and the ultra-forgiving nature of the square driver head. Sure there were some complaints of a loss of distance and deafening sound, quieting the square head buzz a little…However, it has been over a year now, and as far as I can tell, club designers do not sleep these days. The Nike

    Interesting Advertising/Sumo
    2007-09-10 02:16:00
This photo shows part of an advertising poster that appeared last week covering the front wall of a sports club I regularly frequent.I did a double take when I saw the phrase on the front of the womans T shirt."Real women ride 20 inchers".I just wonder if the "humour " translates and is understood by the majority of those who pass by it every day.Autumn Grand Sumo TournamentThe Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament began yesterday sans yokozuna Asashoryu.New yokozuna,Hakuho, hoping to consolidate his position as sole active yokozuna since Asa's suspension lost on the first day to Ama.Kaio, the oldest active ozeki at 35 was also defeated. However newly promoted ozeki Kotomitsuki, who at 31 is the oldest wrestler to be promoted to that rank since the 6 tournament system began in 1958 began with a win.

    Friday Flash..Sumo GuideBook Cover
    2007-07-27 15:48:00
Every year I go to the Nagoya Sumo Tournament Im given a booklet from the Japan Sumo Association along with my ticket and a small gift such as a phone strap. The booklets cover is shown above. The booklet is written in English and not only does it explain the rules and traditions of sumo, the booklet itself makes a good souvenir of the sporting occasion. As predicted on Monday the Japan Sumo Association promoted Kotomitsuki to the rank of ozeki. He's the first Japanese wrestler to be promoted to ozeki since 2001 and also the oldest wrestler to reach the second highest rank since the start of the six big tournament system in 1958 at the age of 31.It will be interesting to see how he goes as an ozeki and whether he can aspire to the highest rank of yokozuna in the next few tournaments.

    Samu-i Sumo
    2007-07-23 01:19:00
The Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament ended yesterday.Asahoryu claimed another Emperor's Cup victory finishing ahead of Hakuho, who was trying to get his first Emperors Cup as a yokozuna. As noted already I made it to the third to last day on Friday.I thought I was running late when I arrived at 10am as most days the bouts begin around 8:30.I was in luck as the first bout began at 10:20.I purchased one of the cheaper nose-bleed seats at 4,700 yen and found my plastic seat near the back of the gym.Now its meant to be the Summer Tournament and outside it was a humid 26 degrees centigrade. But in Row K it was -26 degrees celsius.Someone had set the air-conditioning on the Arctic setting. The vents above Row K spewed forth a virtual solid curtain of ice.Cold currents. The whole day. From 10:20 to 6pm when I left.Ridiculous.If you check the photo you will see an old lady is wearing a coat to fend off the cold.Others donned scarves and towels. The two skimpily dressed girls beside me wrapped themselves

    Friday Flash..Nagoya Summer Sumo Tournament
    2007-07-20 16:15:00
I went along to the thirteenth day of the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament held in the Nagoya Prefectural Gym adjacent to Nagoya Castle.I had the above bento mid-morning as I'd woken up late and skipped breakfast. The bento came in a bag which contained the two polystrene boxes above. The left hand box contains various vegetables and pickled food as well as a huge prawn lurking on the bottom of the box.The right hand box contains rice on which is shredded egg,a small piece of eel which I almost choked on,pink ginger and orange salmon roe.All of which add flavour to the somewhat overcooked and otherwise bland rice. Not really a bargain at 1500 yen, more a part of the ritual of going to the sumo. As for the sumo itself, well that can wait till Monday.

    Sumo...New Yokozuna
    2007-06-04 00:39:00
Following two good displays in the March Spring Tournament and winning the recent Summer Tournament with a 15-0 performance Hakuho was promoted to the rank of yokozuna late last week.He becomes the 69th yokozuna, the top sumo rank and the first promotion since 2003.The last wrestler promoted was fellow Mongolian wrestler Asashoryu whom he beat on his way to winning the Emperors Cup and securing his promotion bid. Barely 22 years old,he becomes the third youngest yokozuna after making his debut in March 2001.His promotion augurs well for the upcoming tournament in Nagoya.I havent seen two yokozuna since the days of Takanohana,Akebono and Masashimaru back in 2002-2003.Asashoryu will be fighting to show his 10 win 5 loss record in the last basho was a glitch while Hakuho will be trying to show he is worthy of the top rank.I'll also be hoping to see Baruto on the comeback trail after injury and Kaio the veteran ozeki who downed Asashoryu on the way to keeping a winning record last time

3D Sumo Game - Sumotori Dreams
    2007-04-19 22:53:43
I was browsing the web earlier today and a strange game really caught my eyes. Sumotori Dreams is a 3D sumo wrestling game of sorts published for the Breakpoint 2007, 96k gamedev compo. Sumotori mainly offers a chance for you to chuckle at the weird antics of these 3D sumos made of blocks. If you really want to have fun with this one, bring some friends around the computer and laugh away at the funky animations, and “interesting” AI. Even though you might not be able to keep your sumo on his feet, that is actually part of what makes the game fun. You can check out a hilarious video of it in action here. (No sound.) Hahaha… Sumo fall down go boom. You can download this free, wacky, less than 100kb, 3D, sumo wrestling game at the main Sumotori Dreams website here. (To access the secret mode in the game: On the title screen, throw a block into the 2nd slot between the bars to the right of the menu.)
