| | Superstitions | | 2008-01-15 22:22:00 | | As the days came closer for me to leave the shores of Madras, I was having sleepless nights as I would have to return to Malaysia to get my Senior Cambridge Examination results. The most wonderful time I had with my mother was like a burning of a candle. It ended as fast as it began. I returned to my auntie’s village to pack my things to board a ship back. It was a tearful parting as I hold my mum’s arm before getting into a bullock cart which would be taking me on a short route through some scenic villages to my aunt’s house.I knew I might not be seeing my mother from a long time to come. If I did, I wanted to earn a lot of money and return with a lot of goodies for her. I had not asked anything about her life with my step father. I wanted to ask her why she had to abandon me, but I didn’t want to hurt her by posing any questions. I wanted the bygone to be as it was.The bullock cart ride was not as I had before. My mind was disturbed by the thought of parting my mum. Will I ever see her again? When one’s mind is elsewhere his eyes become blind. It was exactly what was going through me as I sat wiping my tears.As soon as I reached my aunt’s house, it was bad luck. Yes, my aunt like other villagers took superstitions seriously. I was about to enter the house when she yelled, “Don’t enter!” Then she came with a bowl of turmeric water and some funny things inside it. She went round my head thrice before I set my foot in. It was to get rid of any evil spirits that would have entered into me while passing the many villages. India is not only a land of festivals and funerals but a land of superstitions too. Like a lot of spice added in to their food their lives are spiced with strange superstitions.
